Dr. Boyd W. Haynes III, MD: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes is an absolute joy of a doctor. He makes sure you are listened to and cared for, he takes time to explain everything in terms you'll understand, always has a sunny disposition and ensures you are looked after and comfortable. My mom had her shoulder surgery with him yesterday and everything went perfectly, her pain is minimal and as always every interaction with him is a joy that leaves you laughing. He is what all doctors should aspire to be: kind and compassionate.
Fantastic experience: I recently had Carpal Tunnel Release surgery performed by Dr Haynes. I've had numerous other surgical procedures but this surgery has given me the best results. My right hand started to give me problems about 6 months ago. It began with my hand feeling like it was "going to sleep" or when you get the severe numb feeling. It was not continuous so I ignored getting treatment. Over time the symptoms increased. I would get painful feelings like my hand was in a ice chest. Then I started experiencing severe pain when I went to bed at night. The pain was so intense that it would wake me up from my sleep. It hurt so bad that it kept me awake. I read that a hand brace would help with the nighttime pain. I ordered one and wore it when I went to bed. It helped some but I still had the pain. It finally got to the point that I HAD to do something, it was bothering me so much. I saw Dr Haynes at Orthopaedic & Spine Center. He was sure it was carpal tunnel. I was given an injection in my wrist to see if I could get some relief. It lasted a few days but then all the symptoms started again. I called and got my follow-up appointment moved up because I could not wait until my next scheduled appointment. Dr Haynes gave me several options for treatment and I decided to have the carpal tunnel release surgery. I'm so glad that I did. After the procedure I had little to no post-surgical pain. Dr Haynes asked me to keep my wrist and hand above my heart for 2 complete days. I followed his instructions and on the third day I was able to use my wrist and hand normally. It's almost 3 weeks since my surgery and I'm feeling great. No more numbness and no more pain when I go to bed. I'm so happy with my results. Thank you Dr Haynes.
Fantastic experience: Dr Haynes replaced my knee in January 2019. After my two weeks appointment. I was not bending my knee as I was suppose to. I got myself together after he told me I was going to have another surgery. It has been 5 years and I am thankful to Dr. Haynes.
Negative experience: I do NOT recommend Dr Haynes. He violated his Hippocratic oath by mistreating my childs broken hand. My child broke his pinky knuckle. Dr. Haynes Xrayed it and confirmed it as such. We had xrays from a walk in clinic so we knew it was broken. Instead of numbing it, setting it and applying a cast, he gave us a roll of paper tape and told us to come back in a week. Paper tape to tape fingers together when its the knuckle that was broken!! He took off the fiberglass splint that the clinic applied, and sent my son into the world with tape. Why? So we can keep paying each time we come back? To suggest expensive and painful surgery when it was healing wrong? Then the icing on the cake is he is charging me $240.43 for "Treatment"!!!! I thought it was an error but his office would not take off the charge! Seems to me that Dr. Hayes was too concerned with running up the bill with visits than he was honoring the Hippocratic Oath and treating my son correctly during his visit. Both the MD Express that saw my son before and CHKD that saw my son after Dr. Haynes were in shock and disbelief over how my son was treated. CHKD properly treated my son by numbing the area, setting the bone and applying a hard case for a few more dollars than Dr. Haynes charged so that further leads me to believe I am being mis charged and the bill run up. Shame on Dr. Haynes and the Orthopaedic and Spine Center for trying to take advantage of us at the expense of my sons pain and suffering. If this is how Dr. Haynes treats his patients then I do not suggest anyone go to him.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes is the best!! Great communication, great service, always professional and supportive.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Boyd W. Haynes III, MD was awesome. I had been to many doctors but he fixed my pain. I was in pain for 2 years. My knee hurt so bad that it took me a minute to start walking or to just get up and put weight on it. Dr. Haynes III took me back through all the X-rays and MRI. He came to the conclusion it was my hip. I did not believe it but I went along because the pain was horrific. I had the left total hip replacement on June 15th. The knee pain was gone after surgery. I was back walking without a walker or a cane in a month. I’m doing great and getting ready to plan my other hip replacement. Thanks a lot Dr Haynes III MD and your great staff.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes installed my new hip Dec 2021 and a year later I'm doing fantastic! Dr. Haynes and his therapy team did an incredible job getting me back on my feet and pain free. Huzzah!!!
Fantastic experience: Had two surgeries with Boyd Haynes. Course we are besties and he treated me well. Surguries went perfectly! All I can say is listen to the Doc and follow through. Torn meniscus and carpel tunnel, had no physical therapy.
Fantastic experience: I highly recommend Dr. Haynes. I consulted with him in September 2022 regarding reoccurring knee pain. As a 60 year old runner and Crossfitter, the pain and stiffness were interfering with my athletic and day to day activities. As I had meniscus surgery on the same knee in 2016, the meeting with him confirmed that the arthritis had advanced to the point that knee replacement surgery may be warranted. However, Dr. Haynes first wanted to see if my knee would respond positively to Euflexxa injections and physical therapy. I am so happy he suggested the injections and PT! Six months later I am still going strong. I am back to running and just completed an online Crossfit competition. Thank you, Dr. Haynes!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes recucnstructed my ACL 5 years ago. Strained my meniscus recently and got a MRI in the same knee. Will heal itself. The radiologist was beyond impressed with the condition of my knee post ACL surgery. Gave all credit to the surgeon, Dr. Haynes.
Fantastic experience: I just had my post op appointment with Dr. Haynes who did my arthroscopic meniscus surgery two weeks ago. My knee feels amazing, the pain is gone. I went on vacation to Israel with pain in my knee and made the appointment to see what was wrong when I came home. He knew what the trouble was but an MRI confirmed not only one tear but two. Having the surgery was the best thing I have ever done. If you are suffering from chronic knee pain, run not walk to see Dr. Haynes. You will not regret it. Thank you Dr. Haynes!
Fantastic experience: I had a total knee replacement in June 2021. Dr. Haynes and (PA Chris Schweizer) performed the surgery. My surgery was outpatient. Dr. Haynes ordered a RomTech Portable Connect Bike as part of my physical therapy program. (which is awesome) The day after surgery a technician came to my home and installed the bike. I used the bike as instructed and in less than a week I did not need a walker or cane. Within 10 days I was going up and down the stairs. I am a 65 year old patient and it has been 4 months since my surgery. Thanks to the care and expertise I was given by Dr. Haynes and Chris, I have met or exceed the goals I expected after a total knee replacement. Thank you Dr. Haynes for staying on the cutting edge of technology and bringing me back to better mobility.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes is one of the best in his field! I knew that I had carpal tunnel for sometime but kept ignoring the discomfort and increasing pain until I could no longer do so. Dr. Haynes performed my surgery last Thursday and by Monday, I was back to work. If you listen and do want Dr. Haynes request of you after your surgery, keep your hand elevated and iced etc, you will have the same results and little down time. I had a small incision that healed very well in a short period of time My hand is feeling great, no more sleepless nights and my hand/fingers being numb in the morning when I wake up. If you have carpal tunnel issues, go see Dr. Haynes because this new surgery method is the way to go! Cathy W
Fantastic experience: I sought out Dr. Haynes for my chronic knee pain because he had successfully operated on my daughter for a congenital bone problem. The surgery was (from a mother's perspective) risky. Dr. Haynes was most successful in the surgery and very patient with me as I asked numerous questions post op. Unfortunately, when I met with Dr. Haynes for chronic knee pain, it was news that I did not want to hear; that eventually I would need a knee replacement. He did, though, provide me with some concrete actions that I could take which might well keep knee replacement surgery from occurring in the near future. I have followed his instructions and the chronic pain has been reduced. If not for him and his recommendations, I know that I would be in chronic pain each time I took a walk or attempted a run. Many thanks to you, Dr. Haynes, and your team.
Fantastic experience: Great Doctor
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes and Chris are a great team!! I had my left TKR done 1 year ago and it is perfect. I have no pain and walking is normal. It is very important to listen to instructions from Dr. Haynes, Chris and physical therapy. Very important to do exercise even tho it really hurts. Also I found walking a half hour every day was very beneficial and important. I highly recommend Dr. Haynes and Chris. The whole office at OSC is great.
Fantastic experience: My Journey to Knee Replacement begin with my right knee. My husband and I were traveling, when we stopped to rest, I stepped out of the car and could hardly walk. After seeing a local Orthopedic Doctor, x-rays determine the cartridge was deteriorating. Although, anti-inflammatory and draining fluid from my knee helped for a while, I was determined to find an alternative treatment. I decided to pursue Stem Cell, which is what led me to the Orthopedic and Spine Center of Newport News. Dr. McFarland ordered an MRI, which determined that there was not enough tissue to attach the stem cell to. I spent the next three years getting steroid injections. However, my right knee starting buckling and continued to hurt when I walked. Since, Dr. McFarland specializes in Stem Cell and the Spine, it was suggested that I see one of the other doctors for my knee. Dr. Haynes was recommended from the many reviews I read. After my first meeting with Dr. Haynes, he made me feel comfortable and told me it was my decision to schedule Knee Replacement. The MRI and X-Rays showed that both knees would need a Knee Replacement eventually. I decided on surgery. Surgery went well on my right knee, and so did my post-op recovery. The following year, I had the left knee done. However, the post-op recovery was much harder on me than my right knee. I was discouraged, but with the help of Chris at the Orthopedic and Spine Center, I was told that Knee Replacement is a hard surgery and that I was lucky that my right knee went so well. He eased the pressure I was placing on myself. I found what works for me is I needed to recovery in the way I felt comfortable. A stationary bike was sent home. I did use it for three weeks out of the recommended six weeks. I called and had them pick it up. I felt it only hindered my recovery. I did go to physical therapy, but only two visits. Once, I knew what exercises to do, I did them myself. I probably am not your typical patient that follows every direction to the tee. I found what was most important, is that I honor myself and stay motivated to heal and recover the way that works for me. I had the surgery on Veteran’s Day, and was cutting grass by foot in April. I now, cut two acres with the push mower. I’m grateful for the doctors and staff at Orthopedic and Spine Center! Advice, I can offer: 1. If you are on the fence about having Knee Replacement, just do it. Because, the longer you wait the harder it will be on you. 2. Please love yourself enough to not put pressure on your recovery. Try your best, and stay mobile. Find what works for you. Your mind set has a lot to do with your recovery. Don’t compare your knee replacement with others. Everyone is different. 3. If you have surgery on both knees, don’t compare the recovery. Remember, you will have swelling. Don’t get discouraged. Elevate and ICE are your friend. 4. Do your research. Decide on the doctor that you feel comfortable with. It will make a difference in your recovery. 5. Choose Orthopedic and Spine Center! I travel two hours to see the doctors at OSC. Sometimes, you have to travel to find the best!
Fantastic experience: I've had one doctor visit to doctor Haynes To talk about hip replacement it meant he verified that I needed a hip replacement he explained everything at my level of understanding And 2 months later I got my hit replacement from doctor hames it actually it actually relieved my my back pain that I've been having for 8 years I've got 5 herniated disk plus a plate in my neck so my back is pretty bad off but doctor Haynes After fixing fixing and replacing my hip my back pain 95% of it was gone little did I know I know that my hip was was causing my back pain my back still hurts at times but it is nowhere near the hurtness hurt this that I've had before my Hip replacement My confidence level and doctor Haynes is 100% I felt so relaxed text and my wife asked me are you worried about your hip replacement and I said no because I'm in good hands with doctor Haynes
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes was great and would highly recommend when needing bicep surgery. Don’t hesitate - go see him asap- he will take great care of you. He was thorough, patient and very skilled. Great communication and ensured we had all questions answered. Never rushed and made sure we were the priority. Thank you and your team!!
Fantastic experience: I have been a patient of the spine center for many years. Dr. Boyd Haynes is amazing. He was very thorough and his staff are always very professional. I would recommend him to all of my friends and family. Thank you Dr. Boyd for my new knee can't wait to give it a test drive.
Fantastic experience: I had a torn rotator cuff that was very painful. I went to PT and when completed, the shoulder was not better. After an MRI, I made appt with Dr.. Haynes who recommended surgery. I followed all his instructions after surgery and completed PT for rehab on the shoulder. My shoulder is now pain free. Dr. Haynes did an excellent job, he is a great surgeon and is very personable and I highly recommend him.
Fantastic experience: Self-Verified Patient of Dr. Boyd W. Haynes I have suffered from arthritis pain in both knees for years. I came to see Dr. Boyd W. Haynes June 11, 2021. After looking at my Xrays he told me I had a lot of arthritis on both knees and he explained to me what my options were to help the pain. Dr. Haynes listened to me and we decided to start the series of four injections once a week for four weeks. After the third injection my left knee began to have lesser pain. Dr. Haynes also told me about some exercises I could do myself at home, which has also helped. I recommend Dr. Boyd W. Haynes to anyone that may have knee problems. He has a wonderful sense of humor and is very understanding. He has helped me without having to go thru knee replacement.
Fantastic experience: Over the years, Dr. Haynes has been our family's orthopaedic surgeon. He has always provided truly remarkable skills and excellent care. His post-operative guidance in physical therapy also thoroughly supports the excellent outcomes that we have experienced. Our family is most appreciative.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes is the best! I went to see him about 2 years ago for knee pain. He took x-rays and told me I needed a total knee replacement. That was not what I wanted to hear but Dr. Haynes was very supportive and listened to me and told me when I was ready for the surgery I would let him know and he offered various treatments to try to help with the pain. It took me a year before I finally admitted to Dr. Haynes I was finally ready to have the surgery. Best decision I ever made!!! Dr Haynes and Chris did an amazing job! My surgery went great and my recovery has been phenomenal! It has only been 10 months since I had my knee replacement but I have had complete pain relief and my ROM is great. I highly recommend Dr. Haynes and the staff of OSC. They are the best!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes has been great. I saw him for a knee issue that just really had my spirits down. I was referred to him from several of my friends that said he was fantastic. Dr. Haynes said my issue did not need surgery but my knee needed to get stronger. He explained why surgery was not needed and that therapy was what would make my knee better. He told me to go to therapy and get the knee stronger. He was absolutely right!! I started therapy and I have gotten so much stronger and I can actually tolerate standing on my knee. Dr. Haynes just did not say go to therapy he believed that I could do it and get better. He was my biggest champion! I highly recommend Dr. Haynes. He is a great doctor and good man.
Fantastic experience: THANK YOU DR HAYNES and CHRIS. Thanks to a proper diagnosis and 2 cortisone injections I can walk and move without pain. In less than 24 hours after the injections i feel incredibly better.
Fantastic experience: Just want to say Dr. Haynes is amazing. I had hip pain for 6 months. I completed therapy and had an injection with no relief. Dr. Haynes performed a right hip replacement under a spinal injection. I was very happy not to have general anesthesia. The proceedure was quick and pain free. I have had no hip pain since. I will continue therapy to regain the full use and strength of my right leg. I can't wait to get back to all the activities I love without pain. My sincere appreciation to Dr. Haynes and his amazing staff.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes, is great. I was referred to him by a customer and am very pleased. Suggested non-invasive techniques to avoid major surgery.
Fantastic experience: I could barely walk without incurring intense pain in my right hip. I thought I could gut it out. I WAS WRONG! I went to see Dr Haynes who recommended a right hip replacement. I had the surgery on July 10th and the relief was immediate. Less than two weeks later I am driving and able to get all roomy errands done. Dr. Haynes is affable, knowledgeable and always available to answer questions.
Fantastic experience: After a year of ongoing right knee pain, my doctor (at a different practice) decided I needed a partial knee replacement. In November, 2018, I had the surgery performed. For the first three weeks after surgery I was improving steadily. In the fourth week, I started to have pain in and above the knee, with a clicking or crackling feeling. My doctor told me all of this was normal and that it would take a year to heal. After a year of continuing pain, a friend and patient of Dr. Haynes recommended that I see him. I did, and after taking xrays and reviewing my previous MRI, he said I would need a total knee replacement to correct the problems. Dr. Haynes performed the surgery in mid-February, 2020. During surgery he found and removed a large bone fragment embedded in the muscle and tendon. Within one week of surgery, I was able to switch from a walker to a cane. On the twelfth day after surgery I was able to walk up stairs normally. This was weeks earlier than my previous surgery with a different doctor. I realize that not everyone will be able to do this in twelve days without pain, but I give full credit to Dr. Haynes and his surgical team for their excellent work to allow my quick recovery.
Fantastic experience: I could not be more pleased with the ongoing care I receive from Dr. Haynes! Having severe arthritis in both knees, he long ago said that the goal is to keep me out of the OR as long as possible. One of his recommendations, as simple as it sounds, is stretching, and it is working! When Dr. Haynes tells you to stretch, do it!
Fantastic experience: I could hardly walk into Dr. Boyd Haynes office. I needed a total hip replacement and was in horrible pain. He scheduled the surgery for February 26, 2020. With in 2 weeks I was driving the car and the walker was put away. Thank you Dr. Haynes for giving me back my life!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes performed both my hip replacements and I was told that they should be good for at least 20 years. It has been 20 years and I still am satisfied and grateful to him. He has also been a super professional in helping me with an arthritic shoulder. I have also had six fused vertebrae and some muscle strengthening treatments at the OSC and will definitely continue to seek treatment there if I need it.
Fantastic experience: Went to Dr. Haynes for my shoulder. Turned out to be torn rotator cuff. Set up surgery had it done. Great with the process from start to finish. Talks to you like a person instead of above your head. I would recommend him for anybody to go to. Great person and surgeon.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes was kind and appropriately professional during our meetings in reference to the future possibilities of hip replacement.
Fantastic experience: I am writing this review on behalf of my 2nd mother, N. Hobbs, who wanted to express her appreciation for the wonderful care she received from Dr. Haynes. The process of under going knee surgery is a daunting experience overall, but Dr. Haynes was very understanding of her concerns, walked her through the process prior to the surgery even including other remedies to alleviate her discomfort and pain. Though surgery was necessary, Dr. Haynes was right there from start to finish. WIth the help of physical therapy and the guidance provided by Dr. Haynes to which N. Hobbs obliged, the healing process was much quicker than anticipated. By two months she already had full range of motion. Big thanks to Dr. Haynes and his staff for their care!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Boyd Haynes is very professional, during my visit he took the time to make me feel like I was the only patient there. I want to thank the entire staff for the excellent care received during my visit
Fantastic experience: I had a total hip replacement with a custom made knee with Dr. Boyd Haynes two weeks ago. I have found him to be an extremely caring & competent surgeon with a friendly and open manner. After 2weeks I am walking with a cane & with very little pain. I think that having worked out for months prior to surgery doing Pilates helped me recover that much quicker from the surgery. I would highly recommend Dr Haynes for his competency & efficiency. Thanks!
Fantastic experience: I had a total knee replacement on April 3, 2019 due to a diagnosis of osteoarthritis and osteonecrosis. Dr. Haynes used the Journey II XR, a newer type of replacement that will give me better range of motion than a traditional replacement would. I went home the day of surgery and I was able to walk upstairs the same day. PT and nursing came the next day and immediately got me moving on my own. I used a walker for 5 days, until I realized I was forgetting to use it a lot of the time. I quickly graduated to a cane. When I went for my two week follow-up, I forgot to take the cane and Dr. Haynes said, "I guess you don't need it." I take it with me now, if I'm going someplace that requires a lot of walking, but I'm even walking the dog without it. Total knee replacement is NOT pain free, but I can already see that my leg is straightening out, my walking gait is returning to normal and I no longer have the arthritic pain that needed daily medication. I'm taking Ibuprofin and Tylenol for pain and inflammation and use ice, heat and elevation for pain relief. Out patient Physical Therapy and in-home exercises are keeping me on the road to complete recovery. I'm currently walking about 5,000 daily steps. I can't wait to get back to 10,000 steps daily. Thank you Dr. Haynes for getting the spring back in my step.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes performed my total knee replacement surgery with great results. His outstanding performance, reputation, and personality are reflected by receiving this years "2019 Top Doctors". He is amazing!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes was wonderful. I went to him with carpal tunnel problems and he was very concerned. He shared his concerns and we worked out a game plan. I ended up having surgery on both wrist. He did one at a time and they were both amazingly done. You can't even tell I have had surgery. He was friendly, knowledgable, and even joked around. He followed up with phone calls and a visit after surgery both times as well. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Haynes.
Fantastic experience: I am always impressed by the expertise and care given by Dr. Haynes. He very patiently listens to the problems, offers immediate and long term suggestions and follows through on treatments. I have complete confidence in his recommendations because of the past successes.
Fantastic experience: (By Janet Rambow) Dr. Haynes did my total hip replacement ,and a total knee replacement 16 months later, both procedures at Mary Immaculate Hospital. The hip repair was slightly more painful than the knee, but the knee was almost pain-free. In retrospect, I wish I had not delayed the knee surgery so long after the hip. But I was a victim of "rumor-induced anxiety," having heard all kinds of horror stories about knee surgery from well-meaning friends. Dr. Haynes is an artist at his joint replacement trade, and an excellent diagnostician, with a great personality.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Haynes and his Staff were excellent! Very professional and very caring.
Fantastic experience: I had my anterior total hip replacement by Dr Haynes in Feb 2019...although I was scared out my mind Dr Haynes was very informative and had empathy for me...he fixed me so that after the surgery I went home the next day...I am 9 weeks post-op and not walking with walker nor cane...if you need a Ortho doctor he is it...thank you Dr Haynes and Chris!!
Fantastic experience: Went to Dr. Haynes for a 3rd opinion and 3rd times the charm! He’s so personable and takes time to explain everything and answered every question I had. I will definitely be seeing him from now on
Fantastic experience: Had a great experience with my hip replacement by Dr. Haynes. The pre and post op office visits were prompt and on-time with little wait. Dr. Haynes provided excellent guidance on what to expect with the surgery and recovery. The surgery was performed as outpatient in the morning, and I was home by lunch with minimal pain. The recovery went smoothly and quickly with excellent guidance provided by both in-home and office physical therapy. Would highly recommend Dr. Haynes to anyone needing a new hip!
Fantastic experience: After hip replacement by another physician and having continuing problems, on the advice of a friend, I sought out Dr. Haynes and he is my NEW HERO!! A simple stretching exercise was all I needed and after doing it faithfully for just two short weeks WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Before the exercise I couldn't get down on the floor and back up and I couldn't go up and down stairs easily. Now I can get down on the floor and back up without help and actually run up the stairs!! Dr. Haynes LISTENED to me and has helped me feel like a new person! Will return to Dr. Haynes instead of previous surgeon when other joints need to be replaced! Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Excellent service overall
Fantastic experience: Courteous and professional. The team handled all the details from top to bottom and really made me feel comfortable with the process. This is my second surgery with Dr Haynes (unrelated to each other) and I know that I am in good hands. No one wants to under go surgery, especially more than once, but if that is what you end up with, then you can feel very comfortable with the quality of care that you will receive at OSC.
Fantastic experience: I went to Dr. Haynes to get a second opinion on my knee. He was so great, I ended up switching doctors. He listened, he showed that he cares and he was very detailed on how my surgery would go. I just had an ACL reconstruction surgery on Wednesday and he took really good care of me!! He is so positive too and he will try to help you to go back to your goals! I highly recommend Dr. Haynes.
Fantastic experience: Dr Haynes and his staff is very considerate caring and give you the best service they can to help you toward a speedy recovery
Fantastic experience: Took time to explain in simple language.
Fantastic experience: Awesome experience with Dr Haynes. I was very pleased with Dr Haynes taking the time to explain my diagnosis but also breaking down on level that was easy for me to understand. Very inviting and knowledgeable.
Fantastic experience: Excellent
