Mayo Clinic: Reviews
Negative experience: No testing, no empathy, no real knowledge displayed at all. Derek Stitt should not be a neurologist ANYWHERE, let alone at the dubiously titled, "Best Hospital in the World".
Negative experience: Don’t even try to come here they just deny you as a patient when you really need help!
Negative experience: I went there for my first check up on my brain, stem glioma in the tectum part of my brain hoping to get answers on the symptoms and side effects I’ve been having and we do not really get any help. We got told that at some point in the future, I will need to bring some, but they are not doing it for another 10+ years because it is too small and there’s risks even though there’s risk to any surgery they didn’t let me chime in on what I wanted done with my body. They basically made the decision Themselves I saw an endocrinologist also when we were down there and he was rude basically called me. Fat said I need to lose weight. that everything that I’ve been dealing with is basically in my head and I need to go back to counseling. I am home again, but still dealing with the same side effects. They told my family that if there’s certain side effects that we could contact them or whatever and figure out if we need to come back up or down, but they didn’t tell us what we needed to look out for I would not recommend a neurology department at Mayo Clinic because they are very rude and when a problem is small. They won’t do anything to treat it. They will just leave it as it is until it grows more.
Negative experience: Drove my wife 2 days to get here with a referral, local doctors thought she had a neurological disease, form of MS or something similar but they couldn’t figure it out. We were told this place was the best in the nation. Right off the bat the Doctors were rude, Neurologist Dr. Keegan, wouldn’t let us explain problems, kept talking over us. His assistant looked at her previous medical records briefly, maybe 10 minutes, and just repeated what they said. No analysis of his own, no solutions, ideas or suggestions offered and told us to basically “try somewhere else”, “I don’t think it’s MS”and “maybe it’s rheumatology related or your spine”. They rushed us out of the room and sent us back to the desk. Didn’t try to help us get in with any other departments. We checked her chart the next day and one test was positive for Tuberculosis, we tried to call back and ask what we should do, no help. Ended up taking her to their emergency room to try to get some additional testing ran. They said “we can’t diagnose anything here”. When she can barely walk and is in excruciating pain, they don’t really care to try to figure out what’s going on. Offered pain meds, we said we didn’t come from 1200 miles to get pain meds, we want to find out what is wrong with her! We came from Kentucky because people told us this is the best place in the nation to go to be diagnosed, and “they won’t let you leave till they figure out the problem”. It was the exact opposite. They really don’t care.
Negative experience: You would think that Mayo would have experience with insurance companies like BCBS. They should know that patients traveling from out of state may need to fill out a waiver for coverage out of state but they never told me. I only found out after I got hit with a $5000 bill (for horrible service) that in order for my PPO to cover any of the office appointments, I needed to fill out an out of state waiver. Would have been very easy for Mayo to suggest looking into this while we were on our 18 month wait list. We had appointments over 4 days for evaluations and most of them were a total joke. Absolutely nothing special about this facility and I would never go back.
Fantastic experience: I have been to the Mayo clinic twice. On a five star rating I would give them a ten. I don't have a lot of experience with medical centers but I have been to both Barnes and St Louis University hospitals both are good hospitals and I would use them again but Mayo is by far the best I have ever been at. I have been to Mayo twice and both times Mayo was just excellent. I have been so impressed with Mayo that I give to them on a regular basis from what little funds I have. If I ever have a critical issue and I want the best care I will be back at Mayo.
Negative experience: There are some good doctors here, but for a non-profit hospital, you sure do like people coming in to NUMEROUS appointments and racking up a bill. I am on disability and you guys say a $535/month payment is doable. FOR WHO?!?! So then now my payments are 150/month for over three years. So essentially every year I’ll be racking up more bills, just so you guys can keep collecting until the day I die. How can your executives also get paid such an obscene amount every year vs. everyone else… Not for profit my ass. Come into primary and can barely walk I’m in so much pain, and you essentially tell me to just deal with it and send me on my way. Seems like if you come in a number of times for different things, they just come off as annoyed and just want to get you out. Your system as a whole sucks.
Fantastic experience: Mayo saved my life. Their foundation for being the best healthcare system in the world is built on an incredibly kind, helpful support staff, state of the art aesthetically gorgeous facility, and most importantly, literally the best doctors in the world. I am beyond blessed for having the opportunity to be treated by this miraculous organization. We only get one life, don’t take chances with you or your loved ones health - choose Mayo.
Negative experience: I went to the Mayo Clinic back in may of 2024, and was diagnosed with a syrinx on my spinal cord. I was convinced that I needed a so-called fairly minor surgery to prevent further nerve damage in my legs. About a week after this surgery, my legs went numb and walking has become very challenging ever since. This has left me with a non-functional life, and I sit at home now because it is no longer safe for me to be out and about. I understand that things go wrong during surgery, and that's not even the part that bothers me. After the nerve issues started in my legs, the only answer they could come up with was MRI after MRI that provided zero answers and cost me about an extra $20,000. Why is it my responsibility to figure out what went wrong? It felt like they preyed on my misfortune to make some more money. The fact that I was pretty much paralyzed on their operating table was just a non-factor in this story. Here are a few other things I experienced, that I feel Mayo Clinic and future patients should hear: I use a catheter to urinate, and after surgery I was in so much pain that I could not do it myself. So, I asked for help and was told that their "cath team" had to help me with that. It took the cath team over an hour to come help, and by that time I had urinated all over myself and the bed, so I had to deal with them changing everything while I was in severe pain. There was so much turnover, that I rarely even knew who my nurse was. This led to my pain medication routine being changed over and over again, which meant falling behind on the pain management and having to deal with a lot more pain than I should have. Two different times I ordered food that never came. After all of this, they made it very clear that all they cared about was the bill and I was made to feel like nothing but a $$$. When, if you ask me, they should have been calling me up advocating for me and how they were going to make this right, rather than hounding me for the bill and threatening to sue me. Mayo Clinic may have once been the number one Healthcare facility in the world, but I would certainly have to say they have went downhill in a big way.
Fantastic experience: This is about Mr Azar Hussain Cardiologist a dangerous man who operated on me in 2013 @ Bristol Heart Institute after CABG follow on appointments he Mr Hussain could not recognise me or tried very hard to ignore me to my shock I have suffered more after the bypass than post my operation this man is dangerous and incompetent all my my grafts have enclosed and collapsed I'm now suing the Hospital and found this joker is at Mayo Clinic please take my advice never allow this incompetent and shameless man near you he has failed my bypass and many others in UK that is why he is in USA now you have been warned ⚠️
Negative experience: Hello, I'd like to leave a zero star review but unfortunately I could not, I did not vist mayo however I've heard and seen some things that I'd like the world to know and maybe some one could read this and handel this correctly. The person I am commenting on is Kevin.R.Wald he seems to not know how to do his job very well. From undermining women and trying to force them out of the work place, to covering an employee who stole an obsird amount of product from a card store and committed several other crimes! I can't believe the practice of security has fallen so low and so far... Please if someone could look into this correctly and not half heartedly!
Fantastic experience: Dermatology amazing appointment i had today great place
Negative experience: Denied me care and refused to even see me and sent a generic no thanks letter
Fantastic experience: They are such an awesome team, very friendly and professional
Fantastic experience: The staff are so helpful and willing to do whatever is needed.
Negative experience: I have an atypical heart condition and so made an appointment with the Chief of Preventive Cardiology at the Mayo Clinic. They are supposed to be number 1 in cardiology in the US. I flew over 1,000 miles from my home in NJ to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. I spent a whole day getting tests and the next day was to be my appointment with the specialist. Two hours before the appointment they pulled a bait and switch and suddenly my appointment was with a much lower level, younger, inexperienced doctor. She was not able to answer my questions satisfactory. What a colossal waste of time and money, not to mention the stress Overall i spent $1200. I would not recommend the Mayo Clinic as they treated me in a very unprofessional manner. I got absolutely no new information from my visit. Addendum: Due to this bad review, I've been harassed by Mayo and now I'm getting threatening voice mails saying, "dude I'm gonna get you." I'm an elderly gentleman and this is very frightening.
Fantastic experience: I was coming here for a second opinion (from Canada) for a complicated patella cartilage and bone procedure, and the staff was very helpful at every point—very friendly and pleasantly well equipped. The service is very good. The only thing is that it can be a little pricey if you don't have insurance, but I found the pricing it to be relatively reasonable for the service offered.
Fantastic experience: Surgeon Dr.Van Gompel has changed and saved my life through brain surgery. I had epilepsy my whole life that progressively worsened and occurred more often. It was beginning to cause other health issues. He was willing to take my case when I had run out of options. Been on lots of medications and have a VNS implant. Nothing helped. He explained my options. One experience I have not had prior to seeing him was having someone in the medical field listen to me with sincerity. He is a great surgeon and clearly a great person. Thank you for saving my life.
Fantastic experience: EVERYONE we encountered at the Mayo Clinic was very friendly. This place is huge with lots of employees at all levels and they are all very professional yet comforting and make you feel comfortable at the same time. They leave plenty of time in between appointments so you can get to the next department. Everything is well organized. It's very clean inside and out. Bathrooms near by every location.
Negative experience: I think the Mayo Clinic in Rochester would be a little nicer to low income patients and the hard working middle class patients that can’t make ends meet it’s to expensive to live and my wife had to go to Duluth to get the rest of her rib taken out and it wrecked her muscle. Not happy with you and will never recommend you at all to other people
Negative experience: I took my son to see Dr. Manini the mayo had the largest children’s G.I. group anywhere in the world. Dr. Manini only prescribed more or less X lax. I didn’t need to drive 2 to 3 hours and stay overnight in Rochester to be told that my son needs to take Ex-Lax if he can’t Poop: now he has a colostomy bag and an ostomy bag and he can’t get out of bed. We went to the mayo for over a decade. The commercials are just bullshit. They’re just doctors like anybody else. There’s nothing special about the mayo. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Fantastic experience: I moved to be closer to Mayo Clinic. I'd be a poster child for Mayo. They're just simply amazing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! You WILL get the answers you're looking for. I have a respect for those wonderful doctors that I can't even express in words. They're much appreciated and I'm grateful for the help I've received.
Negative experience: Horrendous phone system that is automated. Ask for sleep and they send you to neurology. Go to neurology and you are back with automation. Please people are spending 10k plus for procedures and you can't afford call center secretaries!!!!!! Like every NYC hospital!!!!? Would never send anyone here. Especially with sleep issues.
Negative experience: “Worst hospital in the nation” Mayo clinic made my mother wait for a year to accept as a patient and at the end ”a lady” called with a very cold voice she is not eligible to be seen as a patient. Neurology department refused to see her as a patient.”Not even a treatment just a visit itself denied!!!” My mother has Multiple System Atrophy and I made her travel all the way from Turkey to the States with a wheelchair. She just got tube placement into her stomach all we asked for was to be able to seen by a doctor If in case she would be eligible for any trial for Multiple System Atrophy or anything else that can make her life quality better She got diagnosed MSA 3 years ago and Neurology department didn’t even check her MRI or the doctor notes we sent. When I ask the person on the phone why? She didn’t give any response and said not everyone can be seen as a patient at Mayo Clinic! I hope they will experience the same quality of care for their loved ones one day and they would understand to be desperate and somebody tells them they’re not worthy of to be seen as a patient let alone treatment!
Negative experience: I thoughtcthat Mayo was different. I thought that Mayo was where you turn when none of your doctors are finding the answer to your medical issues. I was wrong. Very disappointing. No better than an average clinic...and an average clinic falls short...very short.
Fantastic experience: Incredibile professionalism So grateful for surgeon and staff God bless you all
Negative experience: They cater to the wealthy, even if you're dying and are looking to be put on a transplant list you don't matter to them if you aren't bringing in the big bucks for your income and that's even with insurance. It's so sad that we have to pay to stay alive in this country.
Fantastic experience: Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota is rated the number one in healthcare and rightly so! My husband and I have had several surgeries done there ….some recently and some in the past. Our results were outstanding to say the least! Their doctors are so intelligent and kind! They take time to listen to you and respond in laymen’s terms. If it wasn’t for Mayos we would not be alive today!
Fantastic experience: The Mayo Clinic is the number one reason to live in Red Wing. It is highly unusual for a small town this size, 16,000 people, to have this quality of Health Care. My wife and I have both received spectacular life-saving medical care from the Mayo here and we are incredibly grateful.
Fantastic experience: We recently had to travel from Moorhead, Mn. to travel to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn. My lady has been diagnosed with cancer. She saw Dr. Lang Stratt & Dr. Paula Gill. They had a different strategy than our local medical facility. They answered all our questions, they showed the scans & explained their reasoning. It wasn’t only these two, it was escorts, information, shuffle drivers, it was a “ Well Oiled Machine “ that I’ve never seen before. I was a medic in the Army & this seemed like an Army of its own. We aren’t finished with Mayo but my lady feels much better after being there. Thank You to all of you including the people of Rochester, Mn. You have a in your neighborhood. Bob & my lady, Denise. ❤️
Fantastic experience: I have Crohns disease and the mayo saved my life...other Dr's and hospitals gave up on me.
Negative experience: So much for when you need answers, you know where to go as their slogan states. It’s utter nonsense because I have been dealing with full body hives after being diagnosed with rebounding pneumonia. I have been hospitalized numerous times now for this. I am not able to get any care in the twin cities because no one knows how to help. I saw another review on here stating that he got told they can’t help him. I got told the same thing. I was given a letter saying they can’t help me. I will be contacting an attorney!!! Thank you for not giving me a chance. I will be tackling this head on with a lawyer. They should change their motto. I wouldn’t wish what I’m going through on my worst enemy.
Fantastic experience: Excellent staff and doctors. Best medical treatment I have ever received all the way from the information desk to the surgeon.
Negative experience: Mayo clinic should be put out of business!! they care nothing about people or there illnesses
Negative experience: Very unprofessional receptionist it sounds like they are running a circus. No department is on the same page. After one month. They still have no answers. I already know the problem and have told Mayo Clinic with documents and images results from multiple tests to back them up. They act like I am the first case with this problem in the world And cannot figure it out Personally, I believe they went to college for nothing because they know just as much as a McDonald’s employee down the road Flippin burgers still, which is nothing!!!!!
Fantastic experience: Rated as the #1 clinic and hospital in the world. From my experience the staff are professional, respectful, and polite. The level of care is the ultimate in efficiency and technical capabilities. The most important factor for me is it is faith based and non- profit.
Negative experience: Worst experience I just had inexperienced staff no clue what there doing . My appointment was canceled I’m called a lier . I hope you don’t do that to someone on there deathbed. . Dam I’ve been waiting for this 4 months. Good help is hard to find thanks a lot
Negative experience: My mom recently had a surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The day of the surgery was Oct 30, 2024 and we were not sent home with enough supplies to take care of her. After asking the nurse who discharged us if she could get us a new box, because the one she was sending us with had been being used by the nurses for several days and I could tell that there was NOT the two weeks worth of supplies they promised us. Today is Nov 20, 2024 and we have still not received enough supplies to care for my mom. I’m beyond grateful for the care we received while we were physically on the Mayo Clinic property, but I am appalled at how we’re being redirected and told that it’s not their fault now that we’re home and struggling. If you want to be known as one of the best hospitals in the country, then you really need to follow through on aftercare and other promises you made to your patient.
Fantastic experience: Saved my quality of life even in the hard. Love and appreciate all the doctors and staff that have been with me on this journey. I appreciate the art that gives my mind a vacation from what I’m facing.
Fantastic experience: Truly a world-class facility. My team of 39 doctors has helped me to live a better life. They discovered I had Lyme Disease for over three decades. I have been suffering the most unimaginable pain.
Fantastic experience: When u have a serious chronic illness and every choice is a choice for your life. Mayo is where you want to be. I fly across the country twice a year to see the best doctor in the field of my illness. Worth every penny to get the most life I can
Negative experience: This place is great , went there to redo a surgery I had twice before and it wasn't done correct so paid alot for nothing Went to these guys to fix it had to wait over a year to get in had 3 surgery's scheduled had 2 of the 3 and was forced to cancel last one . 90 days after the 1st initial appointment which was over 1500 dollars they sent it to collections tried setting up a pay arrangement but would only take 10 % of total owed as payment so in my care 780 per month maybe it's just me but I could not commit to such high payment , its dang shame that hospitals are so harsh on payment they should be here to help not financially kick you while your down Dr.Christian Baum is the best of the best was really looking forward to getting this behind me and being back to a normal routine .. Very disappointed how this played out !
Negative experience: If this review was about the medical treatment I received, it would be Five Stars. Unfortunately, it is not. I first checked in on October 4th. I was diagnosed with ALS. Today is Monday, the 28th of October. I can count the number of showers I've had on one hand. I am all but paralyzed with limited use in one arm. I'm entirely reliant on them for a shower. When I ask for a shower I hear things like, we're short staffed today, or it may be better if you ask the day shift because they have more PCAs. I now wear a diaper and I hear the same thing when I ask for a diaper change. I hear how busy they are how they're be be right back after they take care of another room etc. understand, I am a man that once took two showers per day and who got a haircut twice a month.i just want to go to a nursing home and die in peace with what little dignity I have left.
Negative experience: Very disappointing experience with the “Best” program. I would say what i was sold ended up lacking substance and follow through.
Negative experience: I'd give them zero stars if I could. I called to make an appointment with a family doctor. They told me they are not taking any new patients at this time. Not anywhere in the southeast. I don't know what is going on, but my guess is doctors are quitting due to being overworked. Shame on you mayo shame on you..
Fantastic experience: This sign, and your new policy makes us unsafe. Do you think a terrorist or an active shooter obeys these stupid signs? Criminals break laws and figure out ways to kill people, in spite of your metal detectors. This policy only disarms the good guys; the same guys who would fight for the safety of victims. Please reconsider.
Negative experience: Been dealing with stomach issues for 5 years, had feeding tubes put in. Can’t keep food down and in extreme pain and lost over 60 lbs. Tried to get in to mayo because can’t get answers or cure where I live and Mayo sent me a letter stating my condition didn’t meet the criteria to be seen there. I guess you have to die before meeting the criteria. Thought they were supposed to be the best.
Positive experience: I spent time at the Mayo Clinic recently. I have to say, for a place so large, these people are organized. There's not much for food on the street. I think a Subway Sandwich shop, maybe a Caribou Coffee. There's shopping, eating, and plenty of celebration inside. The buildings are interconnected underground, it makes it feel old. I'm sorry, I know nobody wants to visit the Mayo and I don't blame you. Blessings, D
Fantastic experience: They found my cancer when no one has been able to in past 3 years. Love how organized and specialized this facility is.
Fantastic experience: I have been going there for 6 years now with no problems. I had a kidney transplant and like my doctors there and my team.
Fantastic experience: Able to get appointments quite timely even in rural areas. Mayo Clinic’s Rochester location is top notch service. They provided excellent care to my mother when she had life saving surgery. I know I can trust Mayo Clinic for complex care.
Positive experience: First let me say this was not my first time to Mayo. Always before I had insurance. This time was different . I'm cash pay and wanted 3 to 4 mo. to pay. They would have none of that. Had to pay a least 75% of my bill that was estimated before they would even look at me. $17, 250.17. I also didn't like the order in which they did the tests. Thinking I should see the Doc before I see the pre-op anesthesia doc for consult. Now thats off my chest. I seen Dr. Dale Ekbom for my trachea . It has grown shut 80% and I was having a hard time doing anything. Dr. Ekbom did a great job calming me down and his bed side manners are spot on. He's very personable, charming, calm and reassuring and very detailed in explaining the procedure! I'm grateful he could get my trachea opened and get me back to the things I love to do, walking, water aerobics, biking, country line dancing playing with grandkids!
Negative experience: My wife was seen in 2022 at Mayo, she was seen by separate specialists over the course of a few months and left with no answers. She was referred there after seeing multiple doctors who all had question marks when it came to her symptoms, every single one of those doctors recommended her to go to Mayo Clinic as they are the “best in the world” at cracking down a diagnosis. Flash forward to 2024, her symptoms are far worse than 2022. She has seen every specialist she can see outside of Mayo Clinic and yet again, all these doctors are referring her to Mayo Clinic. Except this time, Mayo Clinic has denied every single referral that has been sent their way. For Mayo to call themselves the best in the world at finding a diagnosis, they have fallen incredibly short. They are no different than the average clinic you can go to without traveling and spending an arm and a leg, if you’re going to be forking out money to a medical clinic to get no answers, you might as well save your gas money and skip going to Mayo.
Negative experience: Don't believe all the hype. I was just a number that did not receive any kind of special care. They make it seem like you are the chosen one and that they can solve riddles that nobody else can. I provided recent test results prior to my visit which were not reviewed, and I was required to take them again at Mayo. I had an additional test done that was not covered by insurance and cost $3K out of pocket. All tests were done before I even spoke to a doctor. $600 zoom meeting which I felt that I was diagnosing myself. I was communicating with them trying to get support for the tests to provide to insurance and they just turned the $6K bill over to collections. I received nothing from Mayo except a headache and a hole in my pocket. I should have stayed in Iowa for the best doctors and care. There is nothing special about Mayo in Rochester MN. Go to Iowa City.
Fantastic experience: Wait time for a scheduled appointment is minimal. Dr.s seen were friendly, made it a point to ensure we understood results of my tests.
Positive experience: No 1 in medical treatment … Medical care and administrative related subject are weak
Negative experience: The Mayo staff are wonderful. The only thing that I found concerning is the use of styrofoam cups in their dietary rooms for the patients. Styrofoam plastics are linked to cancer and should NOT be full of hot liquids given to cancer patients .. it's honestly mind boggling to me, and it really rubbed me the wrong way. I would like to see them put more effort into those little things, because they make a big difference at the end of the day. Please Mayo, get some more health efficient disposable cups for these patients! Also having so much junk food and pop threw me for a loop as well. These patients should be receiving fresh vegetables, mushrooms, avocados, kale, cabbage, pumpkin seed, coconut oil.. all things to help their bodies stay in a healthy enough state to fight the cancer off. I will not stop until these changes are made across the globe. The correlation in the rise of plastic production, fossil fuels, and cancer are not a coincidence.
Negative experience: Complete waste of time and money. Their doctors were no different than anywhere else and they charge a fortune, especially for lab work. The only good thing is when people ask if tried the Mayo Clinic i can say yes. Definitely not worth paying for.
Negative experience: Your valet/drop off area is absolutely terrible. How is anybody supposed to get to their appointments on time that are in a wheelchair, coming with a transportation company? It's been taking 40 minutes to get to the door for drop off. Unacceptable!!
Negative experience: My physician recommended surgery that had a recovery process that I couldn't accommodate locally. I reached out to Mayo in order to get the surgery nearer to family and support which could get me through the recovery process. After waiting 3 weeks for response after sending test results I was told the Mayo Dr didn't recommend that surgery, which is fine. But I was only allowed to talk to a scheduler and was told I'm not allowed to schedule with a physician to consult on results or discuss further options for treatment. It's pretty disappointing at no point was I even allowed to even discuss treatment with a physician.
Negative experience: An acquaintance gave a glowing review of his experience with Mayo Clinic’s executive health physical. After spending 30+ years in the automotive industry, I am finding myself not in the same health I once was and in need of a physical. I tried multiple times over the past year to schedule an executive health physical with Mayo and was turned down every time. While I am pretty sure my health insurance would have covered the expense, based on my friend’s experience, I offered to pay for it out-of-pocket. In the end, I was told my job title (I am a manager for an automotive OEM) was not sufficient and I was turned down for the last time. I still can’t believe Mayo wouldn’t accept me as a patient for a common medical service. This sure seems to fit the definition of discrimination but I’m pretty sure I can never make such an assertion. Save yourself the time and frustration and take your business elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: The best of the best when it comes to Doctors, courtesy, and actually listening to the patient….not to mention the beautiful architecture of the Mayo Clinic with the art deco, and the buildings surrounding the Mayo Clinic with the ornate stone work and buildings 10+ floors high built by the hands of men and women brick by brick who have since passed on while leaving us with their beautiful craftsmanship to enjoy today and for many more years to come. The Mayo Clinic is not just some place you go for top notch medical help it’s a place you go for an experience.
Negative experience: I drove 2 hours for my appointment and the exam room had a broken light so the doctor had to use a flashlight to do the exam. When the exam began, the nurse and doctor stated laughing and this made me very uncomfortable. The doctor never washed her hands before the exam. The doctor seemed unaware of what was going on with my medical history.
Negative experience: There's a noticeable difference between pre-covid and post-covid Mayo. Their operation has become far less welcoming and more red tape bureaucracy. My mother has been an oncology patient at the Mayo for over a decade, who has annual scheduled screening visits with her Oncologist. She recently found herself in serious medical decline, trapped in a small town hospital 1500 miles away in another state. She's been hospitalized for almost 2 weeks and despite a barrage of tests they've run on her, the local medical staff cannot pinpoint what is wrong with her. She suspects in may be oncology related. Her and her husband have made several attempts to contact her Oncologist at the Mayo to discuss what she should do (travel back to Rochester) but the front line Mayo staff absolutely will not assist her, or let her get through to her doctor. So she ventures into the unknown, unable to communicate with potential life saving help, even though her Oncologist tells her each visit to call him immediately if anything in her health changes, but not so. This is the new Mayo. For one patient, what was the most prestigious medical facility in the world has become her worst nightmare.
Negative experience: A hospital is only as good as the doctor that you are seeing. But I can't make it past their screening process. I guess they don't want to waste time on difficult to diagnose diseases.
Fantastic experience: Best Healthcare System, our local hospitals could be like this. They pay by surgery at local hospitals, our local hospitals couldn't have handled my case .Mitra prolapse valve, plus a few other problems they came upon while repair. Robotic surgery 4 hrs. Feeling great at 41/2 weeks now. No special case. Just make the phone call. So impressed with this hospital. Will never go to our local hospitals for any major surgery. Dr's very kind & listen. Your test results are given to you that day. Very organized System.
Negative experience: Their app is terrible and scheduling is confusing and frustrating. They tell me they can't make me an appointment but they don't tell me why or what they'd require for me to make an appointment. The doctors are great, but their customer interaction with scheduling needs serious help. Very disappointed and angry.
Negative experience: Heard so many great things about this clinic, it's obvious this place is only for rich people. I made an appointment to schedule a visit with these people and they called me for a consultation....if you don't have insurance, they require a 5000 dollar deposit just to make any appointment for you. Why don't you just say if your not rich don't think about coming here!!!!
Fantastic experience: The parking is a bit of a nightmare if you go in the morning. Luckily I’m not a morning person anymore. Excellent doctors, clean with state of the art equipment, free wheelchair service, drop off area out front, very thorough and you’ll have a whole team taking care of your needs.
Negative experience: Had family members come here throughout the years. It’s a great healthcare/hospital system, but it’s been brainwashed by liberal progressives. Wish that would change. But it’s highly unlikely they will since Rochester took the blue pill, too. (Sorry, not Sorry for Freedom of Speech.)
Fantastic experience: We met Dr Yong- Mei-Cha for a consultation for my Dad this morning. She is the most knowledgeable, patient, absolutely brilliant doctor we have ever had the good fortune to meet. We went from Wisconsin and were hoping to upgrade my Dad’s pacemaker. We have great experiences in the UW Madison hospital but Dr Cha is no doubt the best in the world. To be in her presence, we felt that her knowledge is beyond comparison. She spent a good one hour with us and was showing no rush. We are so grateful for this meeting and feel like a huge weight has been lifted. Before this meeting, we were sure that my Dad required a third wire for his pacemaker but the in depth information that Dr Cha gave us, changed our minds. Thank you Dr Cha. You are amazing. Thank you to everyone at Mayo Clinic. You definitely deserve the number one ranking. My Dad’s name is Sukhbir Dhillon and he shares this opinion.
Negative experience: Being met by careless staff, I had inward bended skin to both sides around the waist and the inguinal ligament in the groin. All they could do was making a stooltest …. Well, I paid 15000 usd for a stooltest, while all employees were ignorant and licking windows, as president Bush dropped by at the hospital. The worst experience I have ever had as an international patient. Shame on you Mayo Clinic. You owe me my money and an excuse.
Negative experience: Unprofessional, disorganized, and not as helpful as people claim. After calling my doctor to say they'd accepted my referral? They lost it, and having no record of it at all asked to have it resent. This time? They told me they had "nothing to offer me", dont really have ANYTHING for amputees, and don't work with prosthetics at all. Last time I tried to get in, they took 3 months to tell me they couldn't help me at all back in 2021, forcing me into driving more than twice the distance to have a procedure that didn't help at all. Now I'm stuck with pain and extreme volume loss, with no way to get treated. Thanks for ruining my life, Mayo Clinic. Don't go there. Don't donate. Don't recommend them. All Mayo does? Is cherry-pick the cases they'll take to get the most funding and grants. It's disgusting, and their name now means NOTHING to me.
Negative experience: I’m disappointed in the Mayo Clinic in regards to Pineal Gland Cysts. Their approach was dismissive, very similar to others I have received; however, this is “Mayo Clinic!” These are the top dogs, the innovators- discoverers... instead? My scan was reviewed, dismissed with disbelief that I have a symptomatic cyst (there are thousands of people out there suffering with them!) and thrown away. Not even questioning old thinking, or with curiosity. Just dismissal. The small amount of literature on this matter is old, outdated and does not need the “normally this isn’t the case” approach. There’s a tangible, foreign thing in the center of my brain, it should be taken seriously and with curiosity! Start questioning, start researching.
Fantastic experience: The best healthcare hospital in the world. I'm impressed and grateful every time I visit. It is moving when guests and/or patients sit down at the piano. Check out this display where they honor the pioneer women of the Mayo family.
Negative experience: UPDATE: My Genomics provider is currently under federal investigation for potentially falsifying my medical records and wrongfully denying me care. My initial appointment with my primary care provider was excellent - he was thorough and really listened to me. However, I was not impressed with the specialists, particularly genetics. The provider never reviewed my medical records beforehand, was smirking during the appointment, and conveniently left out half of my metabolic findings and all my severe symptoms. Definitely not worth all the hoops you have to jump through with both Mayo's system and insurance in order to get seen there.
Negative experience: Watch your pocketbook - especially if you are an insured patient with a contracted plan. I felt good leaving my first appointment at Mayo. The problems were when I had an adverse event with the procedure they did. My local provider refused to have an adverse outcome on their quality score. After three weeks of negotiating, I finally had my first headache subside. Then, a week later I got my first surprise bill. I called to ask about it - and the biller was arrogant, rude, and condescending informing me that I had fewer rights as an insured patient who asked if things would be covered than a patient whose plan is out-of-network OR uninsured. The billing department wouldn't work with me given my financial circumstances have drastically changed and I am working on paying for my housing and food. (yes, Mayo is pushing their patients into the determinants of health because they refuse to pause billing while a claim is appealed). The billing department refused to help me contact my provider (what the heck is a "health system" good for) if they are simply going to act as separate organizations. Also, my provider skipped town and is out of the country for who knows how long. I had a snappy response from a nurse with my first headache - how am I supposed to get anywhere with this one? The bill as submitted does not outline what was paid by my insurance, and which charges are being paid by me, instead with grand totals at the bottom. When I asked, I was told they could send an itemized bill. So, I am functionally uninsured, did not receive an estimate of potential charges, and I did the best I could as a patient to determine whether I would be liable for a lot of money (let's face it in today's economic climate, $658 NOT $2,000 goes a long way when you don't have a job). In short, this NON-PROFIT that receives billions of dollars in healthcare subsides needs to get its act together an imbed financial counselors in each appointment so patients know what they are expected to pay OR follow the No Surprises Act and provide an estimate to even insured patients because billing for plan exclusions means they are uninsured.
Negative experience: I wanted "the best" hospital for my aortic valve replacement in 2015 and unfortunately selected Mayo Clinic. Apparently I fell into the very low percentage of people who experienced multiple complications during surgery and my recovery and not ONCE did anyone from Mayo so much as make a phone call to check in with me after discharge. When I filled out my survey after discharge and a year later I expressed my extreme dissatisfaction and said I would love to speak with someone about my experience and still have not heard from anyone. When you take your dog to the vet for surgery they show more compassion, concern and follow up than I got at Mayo.
Fantastic experience: Mayos has some of the best most caring medical professionals in the country. I had a tricky case, and the team here has worked together to not only help my local medical team but to ensure I know I am cared for as a person. When local drs didn't know what to do, Mayo's stepped in and knew exactly what was needed. I feel comfortable and safe with every person on my medical team. I know that they are why I am okay. This place is an absolute blessing. God is in every corner, and the medical team goes above and beyond. You are listened to and valued, and you are helped. Miracle workers at Mayos.
Negative experience: Hospital for the rich! Do not want to see patients on Medicare. First question they ask: "Can you pay for your treatment?" Mayo Father & Brothers will turn in their graves to see their clinic turns into this billion-dollar-in-revenue "non-profit" enterprise.
Fantastic experience: This is what health care should be in 2015. The staff here are friendly, helpful, and go way beyond average customer service to help you. This place is well organized, clean, and the medical care is well coordinated. It is no wonder mayo gets so many awards.
Negative experience: Save ur self the time! This is Friday night our appt is Monday afternoon and we’ve taken off work to make a 6 hr drive. We were told 10minutes to 5 we’d have to pay 10k just to come to the appt and how they won’t bill our insurance. My husband had marfans and heart failure he is on Medicaid and ERIKA in financial was completely rude and said well if u can’t afford it. WHO CAN AFFORD THAT!? You should reimburse me the hotel room I had booked plus the days off work we had to take.
Negative experience: I am very disappointed in Mayo Clinic. I have been in agony for almost 10 months with neuropathic ear pain that nobody where I live can figure out. I put in an appointment request back in March to see a neurosurgeon. They told me I would need to send them my imaging in order to proceed forward. I don’t know why I needed to send them imaging- the hospitals here can retrieve the imaging without me having to sign over anything. I finally was able to get my images to them and they never bothered to acknowledge they’d received them. I had to call in and then they said their neurosurgeon would review and I would get a call back by early the next week. Over a week has passed so I had to call in again. This time they told me the neurosurgeon wouldn’t see me and I had to go through neurology first. They would call me within a week they said. Two weeks passed and I heard nothing so I called them back myself. They said neurology declined my request for an appointment. When I asked why they would not give me a reason. I reiterated that I am in agony with a rare cranial nerve disorder that nobody locally can agree on or treat. They said I would have to wait a year to reeopen my case. No remorse from them whatsoever and a complete lack of care and concern for my wellbeing. Mucked me around for 6 months and then turned me down completely. I think it’s probably because they aren’t skilled enough to work with a rare cranial nerve disorder that only affects 16,000 people worldwide. If they don’t think they can cure you they will drop you like a hot potato. Screw them. I will be going to UPMC where I actually have a shot at being cured. I will never waste my time with such an uncaring clinic again.
Fantastic experience: Had a very good experience in the hospital and clinic staff is very considerate and caring about your needs. Some still needs a little training but overall very caring. ❤️
Fantastic experience: Mayo Clinic and Hospitals are Amazing. The Staff goes above and beyond for your care! Facilities are amazingly spotless!! Well maintained!! The food is awful, really, really terrible!! Lol, in both Hospitals. I had a brief stay at Charter House after 1 of my many surgeries at Mayo, and their food was delicious on most days unless they served that nasty turkey roll they think older adults like. Lol I will travel 2500 miles any day for my medical care at Mayo Clinic.
Fantastic experience: The Mayo Clinic was an amazing experience for my sister. The team at Mayo was incredibly nice, patient and talented. Dr. Smoot was a fantastic surgeon, highly specialized, empathetic and skilled. I couldn't speak highly enough of the team here. They also have put so much thought into making the experience easy for out-of-town visitors with the underground subway etc.
Negative experience: Dr. D'Souza performed a pain injection on me that was the same injection I have received many times over the years at Mayo Clinic. However, this time he poked and prodded me over and over and wiggled the needle under the skin so much that my tissue was damaged and I was in excruciating pain for days. He was also the only injection doctor that warned me ahead of time that I would need to ice the injection site as if he knew he was going to cause more damage than any other doctor. If I did not know the exact cause of the damage, I would have been in the ER that night as the pain was so bad. He is a far worse doctor than any other doctor I've had before and will never see him again, even if he was the only option. Afterwards when I complained, he blamed me and said I was asking for it. Totally unprofessional. I contacted their "Office of Patient Experience," but all I got was a canned letter saying they trust their doctor and think everything was fine. It was not fine, I can still feel the effects of Dr. D'Souza's ineptitude at the injection site weeks later, and I can't recommend Mayo anymore after this awful experience.
Negative experience: Mayo use to be a leading hospital. No longer. Now its a place you go to be used as test subject for medical experiments. Read terms of service, any and all records they can use however they wish and you can't stop it. Additionally, their own staff admit they don't understand nor have the ability to read their notes. (It seems to be a lack of unity care) The IT support can't log nor track down when and who accesses your chart for any reason. Need a medication refill that isn't being provided by their pharmacy, you had better call at least a week ahead of time, perhaps a month just to be safe as it will take them 72 hours to respond to any message. Don't get me wrong, I am not bashing the doctors, they do seem to care this review is more of the overall support system, that is nothing less than unlawful. Don't be shocked if over the next 2-3 years you don't start to see a 5,000% increase in malpractice and wrongful death suits.
Negative experience: It is said that Mayo has some of the most brilliant minds in the field of neurology but one will never know because they refuse to give appointments. They'll toy with you sure. Have you fill out forms, tell you someone will call to arrange scheduling in 7 days. Over a month later, they'll send a form letter that says they recommend you continue care locally. Rinse & Repeat For brilliant minds, they do not seem to have a solid grasp on the English language; skipping right past the part where you tell them again and again that Arkansas ranks 49th in healthcare and has a dire representation of neurology. The University of Arkansas teaches their medical students about sniffles & boo boos but not much else. Don't be too hard on yourselves Mayo. Nuance is something even smart people struggle with at times. And don't fear. I won't huddle in a corner to die simply because you refuse to share your brilliance with patients who need it. No. I'm told Cleveland Clinic is happy to provide healthcare and some would say they are better than Mayo so who knows. Perhaps you've done me the favor of a lifetime.
Fantastic experience: A beautiful building with incredible artwork and an amazing view. Always a fun place to visit!!
Negative experience: I have waited since January for an appointment. I was called deformed by an ENT staff member for having a cleft lip/palate. I was told that I would be contacted. I called a month later, not all medical records that were needed were requested after I told them what to obtain. Somehow my referral went to the Head and Neck department. Still no call. I called again and was told they were waiting for information. I again spoke with ROI and again explained what needed to be ordered. I then received a voice mail that a scheduler was not available until the following Monday. I never received a phone call. I called again and I was told my insurance was not accurate when I have had the sane insurance since 2012. I called again and left a message with patient relations. No return phone call. I called again today and there was a typo on their end with my insurance. I was then told I didn't need ENT, but an OD and that would take two weeks for a return phone call. This has gone back and forth for two months. I am losing sight in one eye, I have a tear in the upper eyelid and a growth under the sane eye (right). My eye is swollen, bloodshot, I can barely see out of that eye. This is the world renowned Mayo? I guess you need to know someone to get help. I have spoken with patent relations twice, ROI three times and no one seems yo know what doctor I need to see when it is a 6 hour drive just for the consultation. If they have the wrong doctor then what? I drive back again and again? This is pathetic. Medical records needs training, doctors or their staff should maybe contact the patient instead of mutiple calls from the patent to make sure things are correct. Thank goodness I know what I am talking about since I used to work at a hospital. Get better, treat people with respect and above all else don't make someone cry y calling them deformed. Ana never called back when that complaint was made. Each time i was told things would be escalated. Never to get a phone call or have notes put in the system. Let alone the incorrect medicsl records. I should not have to play scheduler, ROI or explain what type of doctor is needed. I'm losing eye sight, I can't drive and by the time they call, if they do it will be April. Three months for an appointment to just get scheduled. I hope I don't go blind by then.
Negative experience: Called Mayo several times to get feedback on a referral sent by my doctor to the Division of Gastroenterology and got no where. What happened to good patient service and the reliance on one of the top medical facilities to “ do the right thing “ when it comes to the alarming health statistical exclusion rate of women of color who are diagnosed last or left out of preventative measures that could improve the quality of their life? Are you listening Mayo? Is it truly the place to go to?
Fantastic experience: Mayo Clinic and Hospitals are Amazing. The Staff goes above and beyond for your care! Facilities are amazingly spotless!! Well maintained!! The food is awful, really, really terrible!! Lol, in both Hospitals. I had a brief stay at Charter House after 1 of my many surgeries at Mayo, and their food was delicious on most days unless they served that nasty turkey roll they think older adults like. Negative experience: I was treated so rudely over the phone based on my age. My daughter, 7, has a TBI, SBS, developmental, & physical delays. My fiancé & I have exhausted every resource in our state and were praying that Mayo may have the answers or help we've been searching for. However, when I called to make an appointment for a phone interview, the lady wouldn't even schedule it because she felt I couldn't afford the $5,000 initial appointment based of my age and part time status. She didn't even bother to ask my job title or see what my income was, she just assumed I work minimum wage at a restaurant. She refused to acknowledge my fiancé's roll as step father because our wedding hasn't taken place yet, even though he has been raising our daughter since she was 2, and we have other children together as well. After being humiliated, interrupted, talked down to, and ignored, I finally explained that money was no concern for us. Which she scoffed at and disregard. She asked me a total of 6 times if I was sure I could afford it before flat out telling me that she heavily doubts my ability to pay. Again, this lady had 0 idea what I do for work or my financial status. She asked no questions, she just made assumptions. Finally I hung up on her because I couldn't take the disrespect. After looking at the Mayo website I thought that it was too good to be true, I guess I was right. Maybe we will have luck at one of the other locations. This isn't how you should treat people, especially people who are usually coming to you as a last resort and who NEED help. Being kind is free. Being a decent human is free. Please do better in the future and don't assume when you actually have no idea.
Negative experience: If you want to not be listened to by nurses and doctors when it comes to the care of your child - this is the place for you. If you enjoy multiple visits over a span of weeks for the same concern that could have been addressed and treated in express care with a simple swab and an antibiotic - this is the place for you. If you enjoy spending time in the emergency department with your sick child because you were told to go there but then told there isn't anything they can do to help and end up with an astronomical bill for sitting on a bed - this is the place for you. If you call the billing department and argue the charges should be dismissed on account of being misdiagnosed multiple times and/or ignored your concens when you bring your child in but then told they stand by doing what they thought was right and will keep the $2000+ charges on account - you should go to this clinic. If you think it'd be fun to call for a new prescription for the same infection but then told the child has to be seen again first despite your child having the same visible signs and it spirals you into serious deja vu of not being listened to again and prepare yourself for another round of thousands of dollars and multiple visits for treatment.... if this sounds like the treatment you're looking for, this is the clinic for you and your family.
Negative experience: I have had to bring my son here twice the first trimester he sat in the waiting room with a 104 fever for over 20 minutes ran him to Luther and he was in immediately. Now I’m here again with a baby who fell down the strairs and again waiting over 20 minutes. While they snack and sit on their phone. Just go to Luther this is the regency of hospitals. Trash
Fantastic experience: We were at Vanderbilt before transferring to Mayo. This has been an amazing experience! It’s like it’s a requirement is to be super nice; Vanderbilt, not so much. I would recommend anyone to come here, and I’m so glad we chose to switch. The doctors, nurses, and even the staff (cafeteria, welcome center, etc) were by far nicer than Vanderbilt. They are so knowledgeable, thorough, and patient. Very impressed!
Negative experience: Mayo Clinic is not the same anymore! I had my Mother travel from California to get a second opinion on all of her health needs and things just went wrong. First she went for her appointment and they said the doctor is not here. They had to spend their entire day at the clinic for them to find a new doctor. Then they said she needs to at least come back 2 or 3 times in a row for separate appointments. They never mentioned on the phone and I was not aware that my mother had to have different appointments. No one told us anything during appointment scheduling. We kept receiving random text messages for random appointment dates and times. I called 5 x to clarify my mothers appointment !! We were so confused as to why we were receiving so many texts. Each time I called they either said there was a glitch in the system or they don’t know why my mother keeps receiving random text messages from Mayo Clinic. I AM BEYOND DISAPPOINTED!!! THE PEOPLE THAT WORK THERE SHOULD BE MORE RESPONSIBLE AND PROFICIENT ON THE PHONE.!!! This is unacceptable and they need to be more informative and make sure patient is aware of all the steps before flying from another state. They seemed careless and unaware of things. I will stop recommending people to Mayo Clinic in Rochester. LACK OF COMMUNICATION AND UNPROFESSIONALISM is what my final statement will be!!! TOTAL WASTE OF TIME!!
Fantastic experience: Back in 2016, my mother was admitted here. Ten years prior, she had been diagnosed with auto immune hepatitis. She was being treated by the Essentia Health system in Duluth. However the treatment she had through Essentia is unclear. In her final days her condition was to a point where Essentia no longer had the capabilities to treat her, so they transported her to Mayo Clinic in Rochester for further treatment and possibly a liver transplant. The Mayo Clinic was far more detailed in her treatment and frankly a bit more honest. Unfortunately she had passed away exactly a week after being admitted to Mayo. Essentia had indicated there was no rush for transplantation during her 10 year treatment. Mayo had indicated something different. The doctors at Mayo had indicated that she was to a point where she was too sick to survive a transplant and it should’ve happened 5 years prior. I appreciate the honesty and professionalism of the staff at the Mayo Clinic.
Fantastic experience: The medical staff are so polite, compassionate and sincere. I love the atmosphere. Also the associates with the staff is very helpful and courteous.
