Salem Health Salem Hospital: Reviews

2.8/5 (216 Reviews)

Negative experience: The doctor put in orders for an xray and gave me Ibuprofen and flexographic for a previously torn hip labrum. That requires an MRI, not something that would show up on an X-Ray. I ljust walked out after waiting for 4 hours and sure enough, the X-ray showed nothing. Such a waste of time and resources.

Negative experience: Been here AAALLL damn day waiting for a simple MRI. We were forgotten about. Now they are doing paperwork, but we have no idea when this will be done. I'm disgusted.. nobody has asked us if we're ok...just ignored in the ER AAALLLLL DAMN DAY!!! IM SO ANNOYED! I'll never come back here for ANYTHING. ☆☆☆UPDATE: WE ended up having to stay the night as there was so ambulance service available to take us home. The ER department didn't accommodate us in anyway, nobody asked if we were hungry, thirsty.... I asked for something a little bit more comfortable to sit on as it was clear we would be here a while & I was told "No". I'm in pain, the patient i came with was not given any of her normal medications and we had to ask MULTIPLE times to just get a simple Tylenol. It's pretty clear we were forgotten about when we arrived. She didn't get back to the MRI until after 8pm (we got here at 4pm- this was supposed to be an "Emergency MRI") We are both sore & in pain, tired of being ignored but nobody cares. This has been an awful experience. None of her nurses gave her the time of day. Absolutely awful!!! I'd find ANY other hospital regardless of the distance to avoid this place

Negative experience: This place is very disorganized, especially in a DRU unit. You are set to get a shower one week you’re not gonna get it.

Michelle Aldrich 7 months ago

Positive experience: The bottom line - their care is good for the patient. However, the ED is overcrowded and takes hours to be seen unless you came in via ambulance, and the "shift change" protocols make it difficult to visit your loved one or talk to anyone about their condition. The larger Salem Health gets, the worse the care we all receive in our community.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been to the Salem ER a handful of times now in the last couple of years and not once have I had a single complaint. Most recently, I was admitted for a few days and received the most amazing care from the inpatient doctors, urology, and all of the nurses and techs I encountered. I want to give a special recognition to both of the general surgery unit nurses who took amazing care of me, Katherine and Tshering, and to Louise, my pre-op nurse who made me feel comfortable and less anxious before my procedure.

Fantastic experience: My wife was in the ICU for about a week. Her care was 10 stars! I would like to give my thanks to the following Nurses: Rachel was a 41/2 star. Joel was a 5 star. Natalie was 15 star. She made a really bad situation tolerable, professional be, compassionate, funny,we wanted to adopt her. Thank you again for the care. Fred Roes

Negative experience: Left in the waiting room for 3 hours dripping blood from slicing my finger open and 23 people with coughs have gone before me, I ended up with 8 stitches it wasn't a tiny scrape.

Negative experience: Honestly I loved Salem health but now they dont take our insurance and it's a very popular insurance and refuse to see patients wirh regence now ans it's just so inconvenient to find a lab and in case of emergencies I now need to drive an hour to get seen. Its very upsetting and frustrating

Negative experience: Their "assistance" is a joke. If you're self employed or run a business, don't count on them to offer any sort of assistance or help, even if you're in the negative and made absolutely no money for the year. After spending MONTHS going back and forth with their financial assistance office, who not only DOUBLE counted income lol, they denied us completely because add business expenses back into your income. RIDICULOUS. You can literally make NEGATIVE for the year running your business and not qualify under their "rules". What a joke and a HUGE scam. I don't understand how this is even legal. Anyone who owns or runs a business has to spend money to be able to run that business. Rent, bills, employees, consumables, etc. Salem Health financial assistance will not count that as expenses and will add what you spend on your business back as income. So for example, if you make say $200k but you pay $180k of that in bills, employee costs, materials to run your business that you CANT run that business without.... they will still say you made $200k even though you made $20k. Just another way to stick it to those who work so hard running a business. Seems like we would get further ahead just being on welfare and not working at all :/ SAD that it's come to this. We worked with Legacy when our son broke his arm, it wasn't an issue, we didn't even have to speak with them. We sent in the necessary paperwork (which was EXACTLY the same as Salem health's paperwork btw) and they approved us for what we should have been approved for without question. Seems like they actually understand how businesses and taxes work. Salem WAYYYY overcharged us (nearly $10k for a 3 hour emergency room visit to which they didn't even set his arm properly). They then applied a 50% "uninsured discount" which made it a little more reasonable but still crazy high compared to the national average of what it should cost. Then told us we could apply for financial assistance to help with the remainder. We did, jumping through HOURS of hoops, paperwork and phone calls only to find out it was useless and a huge scam only so Salem can write off a huge amount of their own "expenses" in "charity". Charity to who? Those who literally don't work for a living. DO NOT go to Salem Health expecting any assistance. If we have anything we need for our family we'll be driving to Portland to Legacy where they actually seem to understand how taxes and businesses work and the effect expensive medical bills can have on a lower income family that owns their own business. I also cannot recommend them for birth. A mistake made by a nurse there put my son in the NICU.

Negative experience: We were on vacation in Lincoln City Oregon when I had to go to the hospital because of a hernia issue. They originally said I'd need surgery there in Salem. But no one really did very much for me other than shoving an NG tube down my throat and pump out my stomach to help relax the intestinal blockage. They acted like they didn't want me to leave and have my surgery at home yet nobody wanted to help either. I can't say everyone sucked but most of them did. The nurses and staff there were less than thrilled to be there. They talked to each other all the time. They were constantly yelling and complaining about a developmental disabled person down the hall. They do not need to be in nursing if they are going to be that way. On my fourth day of being there I finally told them that my surgery at home was already scheduled and whether they released me or not I was leaving. The surgeon never bothered to come back and release me at all. I found out I was being released from the nurse who came in and said oh, I see you're leaving, I'm like well thanks for telling me. I haven't heard anything yet and she acted so surprised that the Dr hadn't been in to see me. Nobody ever really checked on me again while I was waiting to leave. That is the beginning and the end of my Salem hospital visit and I would never go back there. If anyone reads this, please don't bother going to Salem hospital, to somewhere else more professional and where people give a damn to take care of patients.

Fantastic experience: Labor and delivery and mom and baby units are so absolutely amazing! Molly, Elsie, and Jen, I seriously can’t thank you enough for your bedside manner and care. (these are the ones I remember the most and their names)

Fantastic experience: The staff at Salem Hospital who treated me - Skye, Mariah, Eden, and Taylor (and a few others)- were so kind and so attentive to my needs, it is hard to express how grateful I am. Also, a young lady named Holly deserves special mention. On a different occasion, a CT scan put me in an unusual, painful position. It took 5 full minutes of near torture, but she stayed with me, held my hand, and spoke soothingly to me. She was so compassionate you would have thought she was speaking to her father. God bless Holly. She won't be forgotten. You folks are wonderful. Thank you very kindly. P.S. The food was great, too!!

Jason Miller 9 months ago

Positive experience: This in no way reflects on the treatment received at the facility. Just an observation. I walked to the hospital with my mother for an appointment. I had my pocket knife. Security seemed visibly shaken when I tried to hand it to him for safe keeping. This has never happened before? Nobody has ever asked if you have a lockbox or other during a hospital visit? So, here I am standing in the parking garage.

Alaska Heidi 9 months ago

Fantastic experience: Elderly mother had hip replaced and we did not encounter one staff member who was not helpful and kind! Mom likes to chat and they were very good and acknowledging her yet moving things along. She really enjoyed the food as well. Even the room service kid was sweet and helpful. Well done Salem Hospital!

FM Kasey 9 months ago

Positive experience: Five stars for compassion, three stars for competency. My mother had a debilitating stroke with significant brain damage on January 19, 2025, and died six days later on January 25. She was initially in Salem Hospital's ICU, and later transferred to the main hospital when it was clear she wouldn't survive. First, I want to thank the ICU and hospital nurses for taking such good care of my mother while being so gracious with my grief. My mother's ICU specialists quickly realized I understood advanced medical terminology, so they didn't need to dumb everything down for me to understand my mother's terminal condition. However, I fail to understand how my mother's Salem Health medical records, which were readily accessible to Salem Hospital, were ignored during her tests and treatment. Her med records clearly and repeatedly stated she was deathly allergic to contrast media, yet Salem Hospital gave her contrast media during her CT scan. The reaction might have killed her had she not been in an ICU. The hospital was also unaware she took Xanax for years, and mistook her trembling and shaking as anxiety instead of withdrawal. It's fair to ask what's the point of having medical records when a hospital, responding to an emergency, doesn't use or consult them before rendering treatment. Overall, my review is probably worth 3 1/2 stars, but I'll round up to 4 because of the nurses' compassion.

Negative experience: Went there to hospital twice 1st time was by P3 health and they said my heart rate was going fast and the 2nd time may 6th 2025 with heart and stomach and problems breathing and coughing could not sleep and me being homeless and have this condition I think the hospital wants me died while being homeless instead keeping for few days until I got better they had to release me So next time I go to a hospital I am going to Ask for a advocate that can help me talk to them and the doctors understand my condition and my living situation with the heart and breathing problems so advocate will happen next time I go to a hospital

Fantastic experience: I went in for an Ablation and spent the night for observation. I had the BEST Dr, OR staff, Nurses, CNA's and food staff ever! All were so concerned with my comfort and care, making sure there was nothing I wanted or needed. I had all the heated blankets I could wish for!!! If you have to be in the hospital this is the place I would recommend!!!

Megan Basl-Huff 10 months ago

Fantastic experience: This is a wonderful hospital with amazing doctors. No matter the negative reviews. Sometimes, it rakes a long time, but there are major emergencies that happen. To rate a place like this super bad is awful. Great security nowadays, also. When the doctor sends you over and it's stat, they really work you in. Cancer patients they don't make you wait with the sick, and I'm so grateful for that. I can't say enough about this hospital. Love the additions!!!

MJ Ru 10 months ago

Fantastic experience: I have had a couple appts in the breast care department and their team was nothing short of incredible! Went in for a biopsy and the staff was so kind and made sure I knew step by step what was going to happen. Leslie and Janet and Dr. Sharp made this experience less anxious and stressful. Their attention to detail and bedside manner exceeded my expectations! Thank you all

Negative experience: I had the most horrific ER experience last month. Taken by ambulance at 2 am for what was possibly a pancreatitis attack. Extreme pain in my stomach and violent vomiting. One week after surgery for screws and rods placed in a broken ankle. I was put in the hallway for 5 hrs. Writhing in pain. I seriously wanted to die. I thought I was going to. Finaly at 7 am I was put in a room for another hour. Stuck in a bed with no crutches or anyway to go to bathroom. Finally a male nurse came in. Put in an IV. Very rude, rough. He grabbed my hand and squeezed very hard. It hurt just as bad as my stomach pain. Still another hr before some medicine. And some medicine to drink that helped a lot. I guess they assumed I was drug seeking even though I had plenty of pain meds that I could not keep down. The pain finaly subsided. Went from a 9 to a 5. Then they discharged me at noon. I had to look up on my chart to find out it was severe gastroenteritis. Sent home with a script for pain pills, pills to calm my pancreas and liver and digestion. Pills for nausea. Which I threw up. Called my Dr and she sent me the liquid form of medicine and under the tongue nausea meds. DID NOT NEED PAIN PILLS. WHAT PART OF I THROW UP THE PILL DID THEY NOT UNDERSTAND. Salem ER really sucks. I guess all the good nurses and Dr's got fired during covid. Never again.

Fantastic experience: I have been to this hospital many times and have never had a bad experience. I have primarily visited for imaging. I have had great experiences at the check-in desk and with every provider I have seen there. I highly recommend Salem Hospital.

Negative experience: Salem Healths CEO Cheryl Wolfe needs to be fired. They used wires to put my ribs back together after open heart surgery. The wires broke a month after surgery and 6 months later had to be opened again. And now 4 years later I need to be reopened up and all the wire removed and have the ""CORRECT HARDWARE""" plate screws that should had been used. Salem Health Hospital CUTS more corners then the Auto Shops of using used parts and saying they are new! Salem Health Hospital sent me home on July 23rd and said "Nothing was wrong with me!" And yet I was back in their ER room (4) Four days later having a TRIPLE BY PASS!! IF YOU VALUE YOUR FAMILY AND LOVED ONES LIFES!! DON'T GO TO SALEM HEALTH HOSPITAL OR GO TO THEIR DOCTORS! THEY WILL KILL YOU!

Kate 11 months ago

Negative experience: Wouldn't go here if I was dying and they were the last hospital on earth.

Jason Bliss 11 months ago

Negative experience: This hospital must be audited by the state as they do not follow state or federal law regarding patient care. DO NOT, I repeat, do NOT take your loved ones to this hospital. They cross all ethical and professional boundaries when it comes to patient care. They have one goal in mind: to line their pockets at the expense of the community and patients they serve. I look forward to a day in court to advocate for the disabled patients they pray upon whom they can't speak for themselves.

Negative experience: Oh well I think they helped make my husband more ill and he died there!! I have nothing but contempt and ill will for this uncaring two faced so and so's!! And thanks for the after call to see how I am doing. I will never forgive ever!!!

Negative experience: If I can give 0 to the hospital I will do that the salem hospital is a big joke I came with lower blood pressure and chest pain dr ort was my doctor he seemed not to understand what I am telling hem and he discharged me with still low blood pressure and pain this hospital I don't know by whom it runs but let me tell you they are mean afterwards I ended going to a different hospital

Negative experience: Crap hospital, staff that are rude and incompetent. Go to silverton or stayton. this hospital does not care about its patients or the family involved. They need bed side manner training and empathy training they choose to get into this line of work they need to learn all the aspects of it

Fantastic experience: 7 mos after I moved here I found out I had breast cancer. To give you some background I have other medical issues and had been under care at Stanford university. I have a blood disorder that must be monitored and the anti coagulation dept is way more fastidious then I had previously. I’ve had three surgeries. The staff have been great. Nurses surgeons. My oncologist amazing. I’m now in chemo and while no one likes that in any circumstance my experience has been the best it could be. Beautiful new facilities.

Negative experience: Salem hospital is the place to go and die. Because ny the time the dr even sees you, you have died from what you came to the hospital for

Fantastic experience: I’ve, unfortunately, had a few opportunities over the last couple of years to need the services of this facility. All I can say is that they’ve exceeded expectations at all times. From the ER to the surgeons, to the nurses and the Creekside Cafe the staff have been friendly, the experience efficient and I’m thankful to have Salem Hospital in the community.

Fantastic experience: I was with my daughter recently while she gave birth to my grandson. I had zero complaints with the nurses they were all amazing. I decided to sneak out of her room for a bit and grab some coffee in the little area with a microwave next to where the nurses all sit, unfortunately for me there wasn't any coffee (understandable since it was well past midnight) I stood there stretching my legs and just looking around, one of your housekeepers looked extremely busy but she must have noticed me checking the coffee because she stopped what she was doing and offered to make me fresh coffee. I wanted to thank her again for helping me even though I could see how busy she was. I also wanted to mention i was in pure amazement watching how quick and thorough she was cleaning. Hats off to you. I believe her name on her badge was lenee. She had Dark long hair, alot of tattoos , pale skin ,wore glasses. Please thank her for me.

Fantastic experience: I’m a stubbornly independent cuss of 85, and suffered through three weeks of being deathly ill (pneumonia on top of my emphysema) before taking a taxi to the ER. I did not think it possible there were so many caring, competent in one location. Five days later I was discharged and now, six days later I am beginning to feel what passes for‘normal’. I can’t thank them enough. J. Don LeCouteur

Negative experience: Hate this place because they do absolutely nothing for me at all just tell me I don't need pills for a infection and send me home EVERY TIME then when I go somewhere else they say otherwise horrible staff and just horrible wait time some girl who had a minor fever got in before a man who was litteraly on the verge of death (man was sent to another hospital because he was and I quote to sick)

Negative experience: I didn’t even get to the back when I received enough disrespect from the front desk staff (Lupe) to be exact. She should not be in that position and have a disrespectful attitude as she does. I called her out on it and she got all red and didn’t say anything. It was enough to take my BUSINESS to Silverton hospital. They were GOD LIKE! I felt genuinely cared for there. Their fast track beds are Hard Chairs. They have real COMFY beds. I will never step foot inside Salem’s emergency room again! Silverton got a 5 star review from me

Jacob Messmer 1 year ago

Negative experience: We had a baby there, if the dad is a smoker it is ridiculously difficult. You have to walk off campus every time and after 8 it gets even more difficult because you have to enter through a completely different building. At least keep security in the building that has people in it 24/7. Security is also different at each building so its useless.

Negative experience: It’s absolutely Disgusting the way they run the hospital and how the patients are treated and ignored.

Selamawit Shannon-Tamrat 1 year ago

Negative experience: I would have given this hospital 0 star. They don't care about their patent, take 30+ minutes to come when you call them to come to the room and check on the individual that is on the hospital bed. I still can't believe that family member is gone because of the lack of care. Trying to grief and at the same time so anger. How do you not have the right equipment and need to wait to do the surgery, reschedule surgery because someone live is more important. Please don't take anyone that you care about to this hospital. short staff and they are burn out

Michael Ashley 1 year ago

Negative experience: My wife Sheila Ashley had the misfortune of being assigned Ms. Chandler for an appointment on 12/03/2024. She acted like she was too busy to even spend ten minutes with my wife and didn't even bother asking her about her concerns. She fled the room without speaking to us any further when we told her the previous injections didn't work and she was experienceing disabling pain in her hips. We never want to see her again. Since she likes gardening so much, she should seriously consider another occupation, maybe talking to her plants, because she sure doesn't like speaking with her patients.

Heather Mcquaid 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: We were hesitant to go to the ER due to all of the horrific reviews but we found ourselves there yesterday. Dr Derek Stewart should have five star reviews across the board as he was the most empathetic doctor with an amazing bedside manner. We did not get the name of the gentleman in financial services but he was super helpful as well. Just wanted to leave a review because these two really went above and beyond and should be recognized.

Negative experience: I am a health care worker and called to check if a missing client was in their care per protocol. The lady that answered the phone immediately had a bad attitude and irritated tone of voice. They cut me off in the middle of answering a question and then hung up on me. I understand that they could have been busy and needed to answer another incoming call, but that absolutely does not excuse their nasty attitude.

Fantastic experience: I cant say enough good things about all of the wonderful people who work at Salem Hospital. From the Doctors, to the Nurses, to all of the Staff members at Salem Hospital. Everyone here seems to truly enjoy helping others. I have received excellent care and I have seen others receive excellent care. Our family loves all the folks at Salem Hospital.

Negative experience: What a complete joke of an organization l. Salem Health if you want a 35% INCREASE in funds from YOUR patients as we will have increased insurance costs and have received approx 3.5% raises ourselves than AT LEAST get your 5 star rating up to 4 stars ⭐️…. You suck and your leadership is super greedy. Go read the blue cross page who’s actually standing up to these Health Gangsters…. Sad sad times in Salem for the only hospital in town. Fantastic experience: I recently had my second major surgery at Salem Hospital in the last 5 years. Both surgeries went through without any complications. Thank you Dr. Hatchett and staff. This particular thank you goes out to all the staff prior to my surgery. Your customer service , hospitality, friendliness, compassion, whatever you want to call it was absolutely amazing, fantastic, stupendous, whatever you want to call it. I was a nervous wreck and you ALL made me feel so comfortable. Please know your dedication to your profession shows. Many folks may overlook the nice lady who checked me in, the terrible , gurney driver who pushed me to the OR. THANK YOU!!! BILL B.

Fantastic experience: I just left here after a 5 night stay with my mom. Everyone (aside a few phlebotomy ladies) from ER, Flr 4, Flr 7, Flr 2 and Flr 6, were so kind. They treated her with dignity and respect, with the patience she needed. The security guards kept my spirits up and made sure I was okay on my random nightly strolls. Vascular Team saved her and left me feeling confident with a post op plan/care moving forward. I know everyone has different experiences but this was a long, stressful stay, made much easier by the care and support we both received from the hospital staff. In a healthcare system that is short staffed and overworked, everywhere, you all handled yourselves with grace, kindness and sprinkles of humor. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.

Negative experience: Emergency Room doctor made me cry asking me why I was even at this hospital. I had given birth in albany Last week due to having established care there before moving to salem in June of this year. So I came in here for severe headache pain caused by epidural spine leakage Sunday. Came back for a blood patch and they forced other work on me I didn't want done. I just came in for a blood patch like recommended by their anesthesiologist, so I didn't want anything else done. Poor attitude from staff.

Negative experience: I was a patient last night at salem hospital in Oregon I smoke some marijuana and I didn’t feel right so when I came to the er I over heard the nurses joking about what type of medicine they was gone give me so I got nervous and ejected myself for the stretcher and was getting ready to leave and they acted like they were gonna force me to stay without my consent they were getting ready to surround me but the perimedics stop it and allowed me to go outside. Then the security guards there this black male with a beard was chasing me in his truck as I left the premises I ask for police assistance they wouldn’t call them for me so I felt fishy about that but I hid from the security he was trying to convince me back in the hospital but I didn’t go for it I felt like they were going to inject me with a lethal dose of medicine and justify it as a overdose I don’t trust hospitals

Fantastic experience: I give 5 stars to the nurse that helped me during a difficult time. Matt, RN CCRN - thank you for displaying empathy and truly caring for your patients. You took the time (even though it was a busy ER) to talk to me and relay caring. You helped me through a medical trauma, and I cannot thank you enough for that. As for I've bad encounter I had with the doctor, I have filed a detailed complaint. This is the first bad encounter I've had at Salem Hospital, so I am hoping that this is a hiccup and the doctor receives the re-education he needs.

Negative experience: Please don’t go here .. very rude staff that tends to laugh and think watching a patient suffer is FUNNY , I’ve have been here numerous of times and the care they seem to wanna provide is not good . Long wait times , incompetent doctors , rude nurses and dirty floors .. I have been brushed off numerous of times for things I know were serious . Not to pull the race card but it’s America and we know how African Americans are treated .. advocate for urself ‼️‼️ don’t let these ppl tell u that what You are feeling is WRONG .. 1 star is too much UGHHHH

Negative experience: I DO NOT RECOMMEND DR. ROBERT PEAK TO ANYONE. EVER! WORSTE DOCTOR EVER! ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO HAVE A BABY! Ì under if he was having a bad day, but you never take out your bad day or frustrations out on a client, or anyone really. I've been to this hospital a few times, but the most recent visit was on 8/2/24, I was a walk-in trying to get induced because I was almost 42 weeks pregnant. The doctor that I saw (DR. ROBERT PEAK) was not only rude, short with me, extremely impatient, and wouldn't let me get a word in really at all, but because I'm normally seen at a different doctor's office and hospital, they're on a different system. So my whole record doesn't show up in their system. So when the doctor asked me questions about my pregnancy, he saw on their system that I've only been seen 3 times my entire pregnancy. Which isn't true. I offered proof, but instead, he basically refused to let me answer, but pretty much was already convinced that I was lying. He pretty much kept calling me a liar to my face. He was extremely unprofessional and rude. Then when he told me what his plan was for inducing me that night, I told him that I needed a few minutes to get ahold of my husband, the baby's father, he then got even more pissy and irritated with me and told me it's my decision to make not his and he needed an answer now. He said that the only answer that matters right now is mine. He was pretty telling me not to call my husband so he could get my induction done and over with. I couldn't believe that someone, like a baby doctor, could be so disrespectful, rude, and completely heartless. I told the doctor and the nurse that I don't care, I'm calling my husband, it's his baby too and regardless of what he thinks, my husband has a voice/say in the baby's life too. The doctor got even more pissy with me. He said, "ok well, whatever, then, I guess just let us know when you figure it out. He then walked out and slammed the door. At this point, I was extremely uncomfortable, which I shouldn't be because I was trying to have our daughter that night. It's supposed to be a happy exciting time, but this doctor absolutely disgusted me. I didn't want this person anywhere near me or our daughter. So I walked out and left. I've NEVER been so disrespected in my life nor made to feel so uncomfortable or like I don't matter. I know that surgeons don't really have a good bedside manner, but that's still no excuse for his actions, attitude, or demeanor. This doctor really needs to be retrained and taught a proper lesson on people skills, etc. I STRONGLY do not nor will not recommend that doctor to ANYONE. EVER! Again, his name is DR. Robert Peak.

Negative experience: Let me start off by saying I am a middle age woman with 3 kids and 2 full time jobs. I am an upstanding person with great insurance.. that shouldn’t matter but we all know it does.. but they treat you like you are a waste of space on earth. Do not go here! You can have an Emergency all while staff is standing around. When you have an emergency and are needing help they asked me several times “ what would you like us to do” let me start by saying YOUR JOB!?!? I didn’t go to school to be a nurse or Dr ect. You did!!!!!!! I passed out onto the floor and all they kept saying was Get up. Like what.. I passsed out, now you want me to just stand up? So I can pass out again. No one in this hospital actually cares. They are busy with their personal conversations. And staring at you and doing nothing. This hospital needs re-Vamped with serious staff who actually cares.. not burnt out people who should choose another profession

Negative experience: I would say they are not living up to their Mission statement. Web Home page has no phone number. "Contact Us", you get billing webpage. Looking for a doctor, you just get a list of names. I consider "looking for a doctor" meaning I need help, not a roster.

Negative experience: Hands down wouldn't take. My new born there I almost fell in the bathroom and landed on my head because it was so wet. I walked out and told them that they needed to clean it and they asked what happened. I told them at least five nurses laughed at me. I then asked where the hell is so funny and they said you just because you fell. It doesn't mean it's that big of an issue. I had just got done having at least 15 seizures. They boarded up the window saying for my privacy again. I have seizures my urine that was taken freezing cold. I should never have to take off my own IV

Fantastic experience: Went to ER and I was very impressed. Very efficient, friendly and got me right back there everybody was so nice. What a great hospitalit visit for this Texan.

Negative experience: They are not very compassinate AT All. My girlfriend took her 89 year old mother there to get hydrated becuase of a stroke and they were awful!! Good luck to anyone who ends up here. Really its just the horrible, massively expensive heathcare system the US has now, I have many doctor friends and they will admit that the system sucks, which is why older people are moving out of America and moving abroad. Good luck gen Z....

Negative experience: Came in for a family emergency and had a horrible experience with destiny ortiz who was working a desk. It was uncalled for and unprofessional she made everyone upset. And made it so we lost valuable time with a family member

Negative experience: If you’re looking to have all your medical concerns disregarded because you’re fat and accused of seeking opiates (after they initially administered them without requesting it when you would’ve been fine without) because you tried advocating for better care - this is definitely the place to go!

Kristina Jackson 1 year ago

Negative experience: I am leaving a higher rating because the first doctor I saw in the ER actually listened to me about my concerns. Sadly, it was shift change and I saw another doctor. With everything that was going on, I thought for sure I was going to be kept entirely overnight for observation. I was sent back home very early in the morning. I do not understand why I was transferred there just to be sent home and never saw a specialist while in the ER like I was supposed to. The standard of care should be better met.

Daniel Hingston 1 year ago

Negative experience: Was hospitalized for about a week, had a nurse who set my antibiotic IV drip to finish way too quickly and caused an adverse reaction, and two nurses who dug a needle under my skin fishing for veins for minutes on end, despite my veins being healthy and prominent. Was also completely mis-diagnosed and discharged with a life threatening chronic condition that they did not catch, which was properly diagnosed and addressed at OHSU days later. None of the aforementioned issues occurred at OHSU by the way.

Positive experience: If you had a long wait in the ER, it is because they're only allowed to see one patient every 15 minutes. Four per hour, per billing protocal. If they are anything like Kaiser. Which they all have to bill per Medicare guidelines. We waited at Kaiser two separate times with my elderly mom for 12 and 11 hours. She caught covid while waiting there and was hospitalized for 5 days! Totally unrelated to what she went to the ER for. At least Salem Hospital is a NICE hospital. Nicer than any hospital in Portland!

Positive experience: We have had good care. Have come in through the ER had one 10 night stay and another single night. Lots of appointments to follow up. So feel justified stating the next... This is the fililthest hospital. Other hospital systems refer to their maintenance as "their pride". There is none of that here. Floors caked with dirt, crumbs, hair and dust bunnies. Dirty walls with soiled curtains that sport holes and rips. Stained and crumbling chairs. The public areas are fine but the ER and rooms are visibly not cared for as well or at all. This forces you to worry about how well kitchens and medical equipment are cared for and cleaned. We have seen the cleaning folks and this is not for them! Salem hospital needs to give them a raise and higher additional staff! When you pay a living wage and respect your employees you don't have "staffing shortages" or a filthy hospital.

Negative experience: The 1 star is for the ER only. I was taken in by ambulance at 1pm with my ear almost completely ripped off. I was left in the hallway for hours with my ear gushing blood. At 11pm Dr Frankenstein sewed my ear up with non disolvable stitches. My ear has huge bumps. The stitches were so tight that we had to snip my ear in 8 places to get them out. I can't wear my glasses now because of this huge fold that he made when he sewed my ear. The plastics Dr told me that it was sewn completely wrong but can't be fixed without basically cutting it back off and reconstruction. Yay. If you can... go literally anywhere else

Negative experience: Sitting in the ER waiting to be seen. The reception nephew came in with non life threatening issues. But he gets taken before us. We were here at least 2 hours before he showed up. That is really bad. Not happy.

Negative experience: 1-27-2024 Salem hospital health is a JOKE.. the wait in the ER lobby is easy 2+hours “doesn’t matter your condition” while two end desk women laugh at everyone & giggle non stop at each other and have a very rude attitude didn’t catch there names.. Anyways 6 ish hours in there get sent to general 6th floor room as soon as you land they want your blood understandable for a procedure to find out an answer! Not even hour in come in and say stay up.everyhours is blood draw.. odd.. by this time it’s give or take 10pm “rest time” and RN laughs and says rest time.. umm ok .. and walks out the room .. have to beg 5 times easily for a ice water… iv rookies can’t find a vane for the life of them so they dig at you hoping they get one .. left a Iv no change in the PIT well o 24 hours and still using it like it’s brand new… well let’s move forward to a new day you’d hope to have a answer NOPE ready for more blood… long story short so many panels later with zero answers besides the run around… well Gloria C Alexander witch is a DOCTOR for Salem health “20yrs experience my paralegal told me” we are going discharge you and get everything ready to go home about 5-10 mins later comes back in and says nope not today 1 more night you’ll be discharge..more blood of course witch my arm looks like like I got stabbed by a knife, at this point.. new day comes and start with breakfast blood draw the run around procedure for that place .. well it’s discharge day and everyone is a ghost well care coordinator comes in says going home we need some info hours later “awesome news “ 2 mins later cna comes in says I don’t think so sorry pop your bubble and laughs …then 4 mins later RN comes in says idk what’s going on… well Gloria c Alexander calls to the room phone to say another LIE about needing more panels more this not going home well she pulled my discharge come to find out… people don’t trust your your health with her or Salem hospital health .. they will leave you sit in a wheelchair for 1 hour in a room not 1 sole in sight and lie to your face like a 2 faced liar place has no consistency I mean NONE … I hope this helps you and makes you stay away from Salem hospital.. if you get stuck and hear that name or see that name tag “Alexander” witch is on her tag and goes by only last name and calls by it .. I feel bad for your health and you’ll get zero answers from here it’s very sad how health care has gone and how individuals are treated. Don’t fall for for her lies go else where Overall stay was a negative zero star ⭐️ rating worst in the business make the drive to another facility! “Btw had to AMA to a new facility” dont haste to do the same protect your Heath not degrade it! I’m sure I’m not the first

Fantastic experience: The staff in the ER are very caring and efficient. My husband and I have both been in the Salem Hospital ER and have has nothing short of a positive response and outcomes from our visits. We live in a rural community with very limited staff and resources. We have always felt the caring, compassion, and skills of the doctors and support staff. People should recognize how Salem is very fortunate to have the facility and staff which are employed here.

Negative experience: Every time we have had to go it is awful. The wait times are ridiculous and maybe half of the staff is even friendly. They don't update you on what's really going on and if they do a few tests and don't figure it out they just send you on your merry way. Definitely would not recommend. If you can go anywhere else besides here it is well worth the drive time. They also completely overcharge for everything.

Positive experience: Big turn around recently. ER is very good if a patient actually has an emergency. However, like most ER, they're over run with uninsured people using it for general health care.

Negative experience: The employees at this hospital are monsters...I came here because I was having issues breathing and they had me wait forever in the lobby. I started confulsing in the chair and the 2 lovely ladies sitting at the front desk kept looking at me and laughing to eachother about it. Then when I finally got a bed they wouldn't even give me a gown, didn't check my vitals and one of the nurses literally threw a blanket at me. One of the ladies who laughed was walking by my room later with this horrible evil smirk on her face when she looked at me. I begged for water but never got it. I don't understand why they were so rude because I was very polite despite being terrified that I was having issues breathing and nobody here seemed to want to help. Next time even if I get shot in the face I will not come here...if you want real care go to stayton hospital.

Negative experience: Salem hospital is horrible! My daughter’s blood pressure was high 154/122 was the highest today. I take her to the ER and the nurse comes in to put an IV in and I tell him that we usually end up having the IV team do it because her veins will shrink and roll. Well he decided to try and he missed, so he keeps digging, my daughter says it hurts and to please stop, he says he is going to see if he can at least get enough for a blood draw and he continues to pull on the syringe to try to get the blood but it started hurting her really bad and she says stop you need to get it out that it’s hurting way too much and he kept doing it, so I ask 4 times for him to stop and he still doesn’t then my daughter started balling begging him to stop and still kept trying and then I raise my voice and say THATS ENOUGH GET IT OUT NOW! They call security and tells me to leave then my daughters husband goes into a seizure and ends up getting admitted. The worst part was that she was still going to need the Iv because she needed a CT Scan with IV contrast ‍♀️ is not the place to go! Salem Hospital LEFT MY DAUGHTERS HUSBAND ALONE DURING HIS SEIZURES AND THERE ARE WITNESSES! they said he was just holding his breath and wouldn’t go in to help and they didn’t have padding on the rails when my daughters boss and her husband where there and seen him hitting his teeth on the metal and his arm was tangled in it as well! Oh and when he came out of the seizures all he heard was the nurses bad mouthing me and his wife

Negative experience: 12/16/23 currently 10:06 pm we got checked in for a simple emergency room visit at about 7pm and have been waiting in a hall bed for 3 hours to be seen when all of a sudden the receptionist came back and checked us in again. Then we asked one of the nurses in our pod (number 1) when we could be seen to which all she had to say was I don't know man that's not me. (Thank your nurse Sarah in the ER)

Negative experience: Rude and uncaring staff the last 3 times I've had to go to this hospital. I try at all costs to get out to Santiam hospital in Stayton, where we have always been treated with kindness and respect. If you want to be treated like an inconvenience, and feel like a burden during your most vulnerable moments this is the place to be. I went in to the labor and delivery per my doctor's advice and was asked "Why are you even here?". After I had to repeat the same thing I had just told the lady at the desk who checked me in minutes before, the nurse went on to tell me that she doesnt even have a bed for me and that theyre all full of patients. Needless to say, I walked out and left because I was not about to let that same person put their hands in my body and check my dilation. She made me feel like an idiot, when I was already feeling vulnerable being without my husband or any family there to accompany me during a very scary time. I'd rather have my baby at home, or anywhere else other than salem hospital.

Fantastic experience: Through a series of medical events, I recently found myself on the 5th floor of building B at the Salem Hospital for recovery after surgery. The outstanding care and concern that I received from the nurses is hard to describe with mere words. So a huge morning salute to all the nurses on the fifth floor, especially the ones that I had direct contact with. Tara and Lily (what a team) Rachel, Jules, Matt, Mila, Megan, Misty, Sara, Sheay, Kris, Mary, Jenna, Frieda, Savannah, and Doris in prep. I would like to say GOD bless you, but I'm too late!! That happened way before I got there!! p.s pina colada anyone? Gratefully John Scha

Fantastic experience: Excellent!! Made a visit when daughter was sick...at ER. Staff handled us quickly and based off the tests we were waiting on did great trying to make us comfortable. Impressed with professionalism and overall experience. Daughter first to point this out after being in er a time or two in past with other family members at different hospitals. Hands down great experience... besides trying to park a pickup :) Keep up the great work!

Fantastic experience: I visited the ER tonight and my experience was absolutely wonderful. The wait was very short and every member of the staff was super nice! I want to thank Dr Philips and nurses Emily, Brittany, and Kelly for being so incredibly compassionate and sweet- something I needed while being in so much pain. I can't recommend this hospital enough and will soon be establishing care with a family doctor here as well.

Fantastic experience: I was taken to the ER and after several tests admitted. I was there four days and had excellent treatment, and care. I was treated well, and looked after as if I was there mother. My in house physician was absolutely wonderful. Thank you for everything. I would have written this sooner had I known that the opportunity was offerd. The only negative is he bill, but hopefully that too will be taken care of in time. Thank you all on the4th floor bldg. Fantastic experience: THANK YOU SALEM HOSPITAL FOR ALL YOU DO!!! We have no insurance, no primary doctor, cant get insurance again til we pay past due premiums (not gonna happen any time soon!) ... live in stayton, went to E.R. there only to be sent home three times, My boyfriend dale was brought by ambulance to Salem hospital three days ago, we have had the most exeptional care here. We are so grateful for all you've done...finally someone took the time to look a little deeper.... He is in surgery right now having a biopsy on his brain.. everyone here has bent over backwards to care and help us make it thru this trying time. Not enough great things can be said about this hospital and its many exeptional employees!!!!!

Every staff member was professional and thorough. We are very grateful for the fantastic staff and services. Thank you!

Fantastic experience: November 2012 I was home watching TV. I got up to go to bed and hit the floor with a thud. The pain was so excruciating, I actually got physically sick. I called 911 told them what happened. The ambulance took me to Salem Hospital. This was on a Friday. They sedated me, inserted a catheter and made an appointment for me for Monday to see a kidney specialist. The specialist told me the kidney would have to come out. WOW!!!. 72 yrs old and I had never been in a hospital in my life. ( for anything serious). January 2013 I had the operation. First time in my life I was"under the knife". I never knew what to expect, or even if I would "survive". But, due to the EXCELLENT care of the nurses and doctor Elkins, it was a piece of cake. I would never wish the pain I had on my worst enemy, but I would DEFINITELY wish the care I got on him if it was needed. My Mother and Father both died in hospitals (cancer). If I ever need another hospital I will make sure it is Salem General. I would rate this hospital a 10 star if there ever was one.

Negative experience: I give it a zero. They consistently lied to me about the whereabouts of my sister. I spent a week looking for a relative and they had the knowledge of her whereabouts the entire time. They would not allow her HER OWN CELL PHONE TO CALL ME, something about HIPPA. DO NOT TAKE YOUR RELATIVES TO THIS HOSPITAL!!! I CANNOT ACCENTUATE THIS ENOUGH. GO TO PORTLAND, GO ANYWHERE BUT HERE. THESE PEOPLE ARE LIARS, THEY ARE UNCARING AND THEY ARE BORDERLINE CRIMINAL IN THEIR HOSPITAL PROTOCOLS. IF YOU THINK I AM OVERREACTING LOOK AT THE OTHER REVIEWS!!!! IF THERE IS A GOOD ATTORNEY WHO WANTS TO SUE A HOSPITAL PLEASE CONTACT ME AS I AM GOING TO TRY TO TEACH THEM A LESSON, FOR MY FAMILY AND FOR OTHER FAMILIES.

Negative experience: Salem Emergency Services answer to a 14 that tried suicide & self harm, bad enough for stitches is to call a crisis line. That was their action plan for her to go home. No referral of a psychoanalysis to be done. I was told they never should have let her leave & to speak to a lawyer. You people disgust me! BTW they deserve negative infinity stars.

Janet Friesen 2 years ago

Negative experience: I would not recommend this hospital Emergency Room or patient care. 3 days, no shower provided even after repeated requests. My mom was called a “risk”. Patients in rooms close to the nurses station are exposed to constant chatter and employees distributing Mary Kay orders while my mom waited 40 minutes for assistance. Bedside manners could use an overhaul. It’s hard enough to have to stay in the hospital but when you are treated like you are an inconvenience instead of a valued individual, it amplifies the pain.

Fantastic experience: I was rushed to Salem hospital in an ambulance they took me right in, they worked on me did everything they could possibly do to figure out what my problem was they fixed me? I was there 6 day's the nursing staff was fantastic. The doctors and everybody was just great. I just want to thank everybuddy for making me feel safe when I was so sick They do their job far beyond the Money I want to pat each and every one of you on the back, thank you so much

Stephan Bernier 2 years ago

Negative experience: When I got ran over by a vehicle they had me waiting in a hallway for 3 hours. Then I show up to emergency with blood clots and after waiting almost 6 hours in the lobby I was leaving and the nurses said don't leave it serious. Then why the heck do you have me waiting in the lobby for 6 hours?! This place is a joke!! Newberg is way better.

Stephanie Rogers 2 years ago

Positive experience: I only say 4 because the first night was awful & so was the initial staff when I was admitted, they were rude & didn’t respect me. I said goodbye 5/30 to Downtown SH Resort (AKA - Salem Hospital) 5 days was enough…Great Private Suite, Room Service, State of the Art Bed with air mattress that moves different parts of your body every 5 minutes, sweet green dress (a little breezy in the back) Only cons - Staff that doesn’t know personal space and likes to know what you are doing every 3 hours around the clock & the staff that likes every 6 hours day or night but they are all lovely people Kuddos to amazing caring staff!!! 5 stars
