South Sound Physical & Hand Therapy - Tacoma

Fantastic experience: The entire team at South Sound Physical Therapy has been great to work with. I really like the positive energy atmosphere. The ladies at the front desk are friendly & efficient, and are willing to work with a client if there’s an issue, as long as it’s quickly resolved. As I come from afar, it’s appreciated when the staff is able to work with me if the traffic is horrible (beyond my control, although I give myself 1.5 hrs to commute from south of Olympia, normally 45 min. drive). The therapy technologists are always ready to help, know exactly which exercises to do & how to smoothly transition from one to the next, making it an easier process & creating a routine for patients to follow- kind of like learning a choreography. My therapist Lani has been invaluable: immediately immersing me in the scientific knowledge regarding my condition & giving me as much detailed information as my brain could absorb. This valuably deepened my time, investment, & working with her has been a life changing experience for the better as I’m able to understand my condition, limits, & how to overcome them in healthy & productive ways. She is VERY good at making hand braces & ensuring they fit right. I had a major plumbing issue a few days after receiving them, and after 3 days of shoveling, my hands were irritated, but not thoroughly trashed due to the braces’ protection & the exercises I had been doing to strengthen my fingers. The next day my hands recovered after my tens session, exercises, and adhesion scraping Lani did after carefully evaluating the damage. Overall, I 100% recommend SSPT & IRG to anyone who may need the services they offer.

Negative experience: I recently had a very unpleasant experience with this clinic. Leadership informed me I was no longer eligible for services as I wasn’t progressing, had no musculoskeletal issues, only cardiac, & because Medicare would no longer pay for services (not true). Several days later, without my consent or knowledge the director left an “urgent” message for my physician sharing, among other things, that they had terminated my care because of my egregious behavior and needed to discuss with him continuing care for my ongoing concerns. My physician had not requested their input at any point, nor myself. The director had said I was not eligible for treatment. Yet, he took it upon himself to contact my PCP without conferring with me. Pretty consistent with other things that occurred that I cannot get into here. Let’s just say that having been a clinical and executive healthcare administrator for state and federal organizations, the clinical director of this place is unprofessional and incompetent, which impacts communication and quality of care. I’ll be filing a few reports soon enough. It’s a shame because they have some good staff.

Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough good things about the care I’ve received here! After a bad fall that left me accidentally doing the splits, I came in feeling overwhelmed and in pain. From day one, everyone has been so kind, professional, and genuinely invested in my recovery. Ebony at the front desk is warm and welcoming—she always greets me with a smile and makes scheduling easy. Adrianne and Dayna are both outstanding physical therapists. They are incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging. Thanks to their expert care, I’ve made great progress and feel stronger every week!

My recovery from operations for bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome has been a lot of work, but I have been expertly guided buy my two therapists and I look forward to every session. The atmosphere is as healing as the therapy itself.

Fantastic experience: Lucas Briggs is kind, knowledgeable, patient, thorough, has a sense of humor that helps maintain some levity (with appropriate timing), and is one of the most fibromyalgia informed physicians I have ever met. He has helped me work through injuries in a fibromyalgia informed way. He has helped me better understand how to take care of myself and exercise in such a way so as to not cause flares when I'm trying to build strength and increase mobility. Game changing care! I'm super grateful to have been referred to him.

Fantastic experience: As an Army veteran combat medic paratrooper with 47 mostly combat load jumps (that's when you jump out of a plane with about 120lbs of gear strapped all over your body, causing you to walk like the kid in a Christmas Story Movie), a Muay Thai fighter/Boxer/Martial Artist with quite a few fights in the ring and cage, who's been to numerous physical therapists for almost countless injuries, this place is special. It is the ONLY physical therapy clinic I've been to where I feel like I'm actually making progress healing some of these old nagging injuries. What I like the most, is the multitude of different therapy options you are given. It isn't a one size fits all program. They take very diligent notes on you to keep moving forward from the last visit. I also like how during one visit, I can have different therapists who specialize in different types of physical therapy all work on me during one visit. As an example, I saw one therapist and mentioned what another one did had helped and was looking forward to seeing her at my next visit. Her response? Let me see if she's busy and we can just do it now for you. Coming from the VA, this is the stuff that makes me smile and know I'm in good hands. I trust every therapist here and have great respect for how much they seem to enjoy helping you. You can really tell the therapists here aren't just coming to a job. They seem to really enjoy being where they are, and seem to absolutely love what they do. From the bottom of my heart, I am immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to work with every single person here. From the front desk, to the therapists, I can't speak highly enough about them all. I will never forget the people here and the level of effort they put into getting me better each time I go in. I'd like to thank each and every person at this clinic for the amazing job they have done so far. I've gone from feeling like a 4/10 as far as my overall health is concerned, to a 6-7/10. Yes, I have a bit of a road to travel yet to get where I'd like to be. But and however, to have made the progress I have in the short time I've seen them has been nothing short of outstanding. I look forward to continuing working with this clinic and would recommend them to anyone who needs physical therapy for any reason. Thank you all for being you!

Fantastic experience: I've had some temporary success in loosening up my neck and upper back muscles with the exercises that Alex has recommended for me, along with the stretching and ROM movements that he's doing. Given my fused spine and loss of curvature in my neck, the pain, stiffness, tightness, and reduced ROM is part of my life now, but the temporary relief I'm afforded is welcomed. Alex has done an excellent job in treating me and is showing me lots of new exercises and variations of what I've been doing.

He was able to diagnose my shoulder issues, recommend a regimen of exercises that made a significant improvement and gave me the knowledge and tools to help me recover.

In sessions work is done towards my personal goals and moving the baseline of what I can do comfortably, regularly, to a greater range through both aqua and more traditional therapy. Sessions are affirming and confidence building and focus on capabilities rather than disabilities. Beyond the work and therapy the people are amazing, personally--the smiles--the jokes--the laughing--everyone is genuinely happy to be working on this team and assisting the clients that come in.

Positive experience: The desk person is very friendly and does her best to get you scheduled. The therapists all have great knowledge and skills to do their jobs. They are all very kind and helpful.

Fantastic experience: I love coming to South Sound for aqua therapy. Aqua therapy is the only thing that has helped me to be mobile without pain! The interplay between the therapists and the clients is fun and everyone seems to love what they are doing. It is a healing environment built around jokes and laughter.

Fantastic experience: Oh my God, I love this place. Over the past year I've been seeing Rebekah for pelvic floor (endometriosis/ visceral fascia) and Jesse and Kimber for my feet(overall proper function loss from multiple foot injury pain/ fascia taughtness/ strength/mobility/ ligament damage to ankles and L knee), and everything is getting so much better. These guys are definitely well versed in their respective fields and holistic approaches, such as Jesse correcting my spine today. (Dude... thank you! I feel like I can turn my head like an now.) If you want someone who's more aggressive for the purposes of quick results, go with Jesse. If you want someone who's less aggressive but still efficient, go with Kimber. Just remember that PT almost always causes some pain and discomfort as things are being manipulated back into place and what not. You have to be willing to go through some temporary discomfort in the beginning if you want to feel better in the long run. And results will never be permanent unless you do the home exercise, no matter where you receive care.

Fantastic experience: My doctor sent me to South Sound Physical and Hand Therapy after over 20 years of back and neck pain. From the first moment I walked in the door, the receptionist made me feel very welcomed. After several sessions, I think I’ve worked with every therapist they have, and they’re all amazing people. So kind, funny, and attentive. They all have different styles which aids in strengthening different areas. I notice a significant reduction in pain after aqua therapy sessions. I highly recommend this place. They are skilled professionals who will go the extra mile to help figure out how to reduce pain.

Negative experience: This was the worst medical related clinic I have ever visited and I'm 56 years old. The initial greeting I received upon entering the first (and last) time was, "What's up!". Really? Next, while filling out the usual mountain of paperwork, the therapist comes out in a rush and leads me to an exam room. He was extremely stressed out, rushing to fill out notes on his laptop and not following what I was trying to explain. Finally, he stated, "Well, I'm good, but I'm not THAT good.", and began doing Google searches for someone who might be THAT good. He called one place and when they said, "May I ask who I'm speaking with?", he rudely replied, "It doesn't matter who you're talking to, just answer my question!". On my exit, he never said a word to the staff that he was referring me elsewhere, so they continued as if I would be returning in a week's time. I won't, and you shouldn't either.

Fantastic experience: The therapists I've worked with are excellent! They listen well, and they really know their stuff, whether it is hands on work that you need or what exercises you should be doing and making sure you are doing them correctly. I am over 65 and very nervous about Covid-19. But it is incredibly important that I continue my physical therapy in person and I am reassured by the precautions they take. Of course, each person has their temperature taken, then must wash their hands, everyone is masked, and equipment is thoroughly cleaned after each use. It makes me feel very secure.

The staff are courteous, scheduling is simple, text reminders are so helpful AND Ali Unterreiner has helped me fix every issue I’ve had in my journey from carrying 3 babies to getting back in shape along the way (in my 40s)!

Fantastic experience: If you’ve never experienced water exercises for PT then you need to ask for it if you’re needing gentle exercises to rebuild muscle strength and endurance. These PT’s know how to get results!

Front desk is wonderful at working with your other obligations to schedule appointments and super at handling forms and paperwork dealing with work and insurance companies. Staff is continuously cleaning equipment and pool area to provide a safe environment for client's therapy session. Highly recommend!

Negative experience: I called make an appointment on Friday but their sweet front desk personnel told me all staffs schedules are full until September 2021 & they dont accept my insurence either. It is better you hired a loyal & caring & friendly person in your front desk not a jerk,that she gives us untruthful information & messed up with your business as well.

Fantastic experience: The entire staff was great.They were very efficient in working out a schedule for me and greeted me at each appointment by name. My Therapist Mitch Blakney gave me explicit instructions for the exercises i was to do even writing them down for me to take home.

Everyone establishes a strong personal connection with their clients, which in turn, helps us to overcome whatever the issues are. The option of water therapy is a huge plus. I can't say enough about the cheerleader attitude of the entire staff, cheering their clients on to success at achieving their goals. Whatever your problem, the therapists and staff will help you get better, feel better about yourself, and always be on your side with their expertise and experience. Fantastic experience: I love South Sound. They've provided excellent physical therapy for me and offer the invaluable extended pool program. This is not a PT mill but a place where you will be greeted personally and welcomed into a community of individuals supporting each other in the battle against pain and disability. The clinicians are compassionate, skilled, and dedicated and the administrative staff courteous, competent, and patient. I'm forever grateful that my MD referred me here and have been coming to the extended pool program now for 4 years.

The additional offering for a neurological treatment therapy in the pool is very progressive therapy. I was shocked they take care of veterans like me who have Tricare!

Fantastic experience: My doctor referred me to this clinic and I'm so glad she did. I have not had any success treating my chronic pain and fatigue condition until my PT here got me started on pool therapy. It has been great for me and now I'm pool certified and can come on my own to continue my treatment. I've seen two different doctors and they are both very in tune with treating a Fibromyalgia patient. I've also worked with a PTA in the pool and she did a great job of managing my treatment. Very detail oriented. The staff are friendly and know everyone who walks in the door. I feel so fortunate to have found this place!
