If you have swelling that doesn't go away, it could be a sign of a more serious underlying condition. This is especially true if the swelling starts after treatment for breast cancer, gynecological cancer, or other types of cancer. If you have a family history of swelling or lymphedema, you may be more likely to develop this condition. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available to manage swelling. As a certified lymphedema therapist, I can help you find the best treatment option for your needs.

If you are experiencing pain in one area, the source of the pain may actually be located somewhere else. I can help you identify and treat the underlying causes of your pain, rather than just treating the symptoms. By making some changes to how your body works, you can reduce or eliminate your pain.

I have been helping people feel better, function better, and move better for more than 30 years using my hands, heart, and head. I believe that each person is unique and deserves holistic and personalized care.

I have taken and continue to take numerous courses related to Pelvic Dysfunction; through the APTA, and the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute (H&W PRI). I have also assisted several of the H&W PRI courses including PF1, Pregnancy and Postpartum, and the Visceral Mobilization and Myofascial Pelvis courses.

The cranial and muscle energy techniques are two different styles of education that are often taught together. Myofascial release is another style of education that is often taught alongside these two techniques. Strain-counterstrain is a mobilization technique that is often used in conjunction with these other styles. Joint mobilization and visceral manipulation are two other styles of education that are often taught alongside these other techniques.

I was certified in 1999 to train others in lymphedema and became LANA certified in 2001. I make sure to keep my certification up to date by participating in ongoing education.

I have always had trouble with my stomach. I went to see Janette for something else entirely, but I am really glad she was able to help me. After all these years of pain and difficulty, I am finally relieved. I hope this kind of therapy becomes more mainstream because it is both painless and effective.

I started seeing Janette Cariad a year or so after I had surgery for prostate cancer. I had some lingering stress incontinence and I expected the treatment process to be pretty straight-forward. Janette's treatment and methods were anything but perfunctory. She taught me about the complex relationship between muscles, positions, and alignments involved in the pelvic area and how strengthening and adjusting these elements promotes control, stability and strength. In addition, I find that after sticking with the exercises Janette has given me, my posture and lower body strength are both significantly improved. I've come away from working with Janette with a much more satisfying and far-reaching result than I'd anticipated or hoped for.

A thorough examination of your whole body will be conducted as part of your treatment, which may also include an internal examination of your pelvic floor and related structures.

The following text discusses different possible treatments that may be recommended after an initial consultation. These treatments include manual therapy, individualized exercise instruction, training in posture and body mechanics, training in self-care/treatment techniques, movement re-education, biofeedback, and modalities such as cold laser and compression therapy.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been seeing Dr. Janette throughout my preconception phase with suspected endometriosis, then pregnancy and now postpartum. She’s been wonderful throughout all phases and I cannot recommend her enough. She really knows her craft and has so many special skills beyond PT that keep on surprising me. She is respectful, gentle and warm. I especially appreciate that she thinks very holistically and truly listens to my personal concerns. Her approach is tailored to my needs and includes manual therapy that is the extremely helpful. After having my baby, I wasn’t able to come back as soon as I wanted to, but once I was back to working with Janette, I started healing my prolapse and abdominal separation noticeably in a very short amount of time. If you are looking for an amazing pelvic floor PT, look no further. I highly recommend adding Janette to your health team.

Fantastic experience: My praise and gratitude for Janette is endless. I came to her after trying more traditional forms of PT, desperate to feel better. Within just a couple sessions, my nerve pain had significantly reduced. I credit Janette with encouraging me to visit a specialist, who then made a very critical diagnosis, solving 20 years of mystery health issues. After having so many medical professionals tell me it was all in my head, it was so relieving to have someone truly listen and take my symptoms seriously. The 18+ months I visited Janette weekly (sometimes twice a week) were well worth the time and money, and she was instrumental in my healing after surgery. I’ve since moved out of state and if only I could have taken Janette with me! I plan to make an effort to see her whenever I am in the Bay Area. Janette is a true master of her craft and is constantly learning new techniques. She creates a safe and comfortable environment and is clearly passionate about helping people feel better physically and mentally. I can’t imagine where I would be if I hadn’t sought her out. Thank you, Janette!

Fantastic experience: I was referred by UCSF Endometriosis Center to Janette for pelvic floor physical therapy following a laparoscopy. I had been in constant, chronic, and debilitating pain for over 2 years, which impacted my overall quality of life. Janette's individualized approach and expertise allowed me to feel relief the day following my first appointment. I noticed going from irritable and agitated due to the pain, to calm and present in my body. This was the first time I had felt like this in over 2 years and I became hopeful for my future. Janette validated my experience through her understanding of the latest endometriosis research. Janette provided manageable exercises where I was able to see progress between each session, which kept me motivated. I feel safe, seen, and held throughout this healing process by Janette's kind, calm, and present demeanor.

Fantastic experience: Janette is such a gift to work with. She truly listens to you and your body, bringing a personalized and thoughtful approach to every session. Janette has provided me with so many effective tools and simple exercises that I can do at home in between sessions. She's taught me so much about my body's responses and the methods that work best for me. Her gentle and tactful touch has done wonders for me and I'm incredibly grateful.

Fantastic experience: Janette is amazing - I found her through a colleague recommendation after seeing several top pelvic floor PTs in the area. I have made 4x the amount of progress with her than I did with anyone else. She has an excellent skill set, is calm, kind, intuitive, effective and just a really supportive human. After a rough birth with my daughter and then a serious car accident after that, I have a LOT of injuries and things to work on and I have been to about 8PTs in the last two years - maybe more! I feel so lucky to be working with her, she's really good at what she does. BONUS: the location of her office is EXCELLENT!

Fantastic experience: I've been working with Janette for about three years and she is wonderful. She has skills that most physical therapists don't have in terms of the ability to mobilize and manipulate organs and to work on the myofascial tissue. She is extremely knowledgeable and I appreciate her perspectives and advice as much as I do the actual work she does on my body. Janette has also always been encouraging and kind as I have navigated my health journey. I would recommend her to anyone!

Fantastic experience: Janette’s hands are almost as if they have eyes in the tips of them- guiding her to the perfect places and spaces in the body to re-align. I’m so grateful for the work she does in the world!

Fantastic experience: Janette is an amazing therapist! I injured my left bicep almost a year ago and I was unable to complete my workouts with the intensity that I did before. I was pretty bummed out... I heard of Janette through a good friend of mine that said she was an excellent physical therapist. She completed a thorough exam, showed me what was wrong and then treated my left arm with a gentle touch. She explained simply to wait 48 hours before going back to the gym. So, I waited two days as instructed and then went to my favorite gym. I was kinda skeptical to see what would happen. I picked up a 50 lb weight with my left arm and did a bicep curl. I was surprised to find out that I could actually lift that weight nearly pain free! Very Cool. This was something I was unable to do for 8 months, so you can probably imagine how stoked I was. After a couple of treatments, I returned to the gym and BAM!! - To my astonishment, I was working out pain free and with the same amount of weight prior to my injury. Thanks Janette, I never thought my arm would be pain free again.

Fantastic experience: I have been seeing Janette for my chronic tailbone/pelvic/sciatica issue that I have had for years, after an injury. After having tried several physical therapists, chiropractors, yoga, acupuncture etc., and not having found much sustained relief, I was referred to Janette. Her therapy helped me significantly, and after several sessions I found myself going back for help less frequently. She is very knowledgeable about the human body, and has an amazing holistic sense of finding the source of discomfort in the body. Often, I would go to her with sciatica but she would start out treating my neck or upper back, and the sciatica symptoms would disappear within a day. Now I feel like my pain and sciatica symptoms are almost a thing of the past. When it does mildly recur every now and then, I do go for a session with her and that takes care of it for a good while. Janette has a wonderful attitude and a great sense of humor, and when I’m in pain I look forward to my session with her. She keenly listens to my problems and pays attention to the minutest detail. I highly recommend Nurturing Health Physical Therapy for people with back/pelvic/coccyx issues that need attention.
