Physical therapy (PT) is a healthcare specialty used to evaluate, diagnose, and treat physical problems or disorders of the human body. The goal of PT is for people to be able to go about their normal daily activities as they did before an injury or surgery. Physical Therapists use exercise, manual skills, and functional training to help patients return to their prior level of activity.
Occupational therapy helps patients recover from injuries, trauma, and neurological or musculoskeletal disorders to regain the skills needed to resume the highest level of function for daily living and tasks.
The Department of Rheumatology provides a full range of services - including joint injections, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and infusion therapies – for arthritis and systemic rheumatic autoimmune diseases, including scleroderma, lupus, inflammatory arthritis, spondyloarthritis, osteoarthritis, and gout.
Each patient will experience a different treatment program designed especially for them. By working with the patient and their loved ones physical and/or occupational therapists can care for patients to provide the following therapies:
When a patient is referred to PT or OT, their first visit will be an evaluation. This means the therapist will ask about the patient’s physical history, examine the area of the body that needs therapy, and make a recommendation for treatment. Patients will be asked to come in once a week or more frequently, depending on their care plan.
Physical and occupational therapists work with patients while they are in the hospital to help them regain independence and function. They can also help in making sure the patient goes to a safe setting when they are ready to leave the hospital. This could be home, but could also be to a non-hospital setting that helps with physical therapy
PTs may evaluate range of motion, strength, coordination, balance and cognition as they relate to functional mobility, including bed mobility, transfers, ambulation, wheelchair mobility and stairs.
OTs may evaluate range of motion, strength, coordination, balance, and cognition as they relate to activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, dressing, toileting, and self-feeding.

BMC Physical and Occupational Therapy - Hyde Park: Reviews
Fantastic experience: As an ex athlete I had my share of injuries and surgeries over the years. As a result, I have been in physical therapy many times. This was my best experience, by far. I worked with Caroline and Melissa. And they were amazing. The speed and quality of my recovery from shoulder surgery exceeded my expectations and even those of my orthopedic surgeon. This is the place to go if you want a knowledgeable staff, compassionate care, and results.
Fantastic experience: The first time I went to BMC's PT location in Hyde Park was from January to March 2023 - for lumbar pain. I had been diagnosed with severe lumbar degenerative disease and could barely walk. It was my good fortune to have Joshua as my physiologist and coach. Later in therapy, Mellisa took over my care. They took me through eight (8) sessions of gently managed care in consideration of my painful condition. It was a return to exercise that I hadn't done in years. BMC's Pain Clinic completed treatment with intra-articular facet shots. This month (?) I'll be returning to therapy for a torn rotator cuff. I look forward to seeing the font desk staff again. Polite and knowledgeable, they kept me on track for visits. The facility is spotless. The parking is free. If you're scheduled for PT and live in Hyde Park or the surrounding areas, please consider BMC's Physical and Occupational Therapy located in The Shops at Riverwood Mall at the intersection of River Street and Wood Avenue.
Fantastic experience: I had a total knee replacement and I choose BMC Physical therapy in 890 River Street, Hyde Park MA because I knew they will give me the encouragement to work hard of myself for healthy success. I thank all the staffs for their kind and experience work especially my therapist Carolina Colair and Michael Marrow who worked hard with me to be able to walk without a cane and due to my recovery I recommend BMC Physical Therapy in 890 River St Hyde Park to anyone who needs therapy. They have all the exercise tools and equipments to make you strong to be on your feet.
Fantastic experience: During my therapy session at Boston Medical Center on River st, I had an extraodinary experience with my therapist Caroline Codair. Through her prossionalism, her knolegde, her humor and her kindness. She did and extraordinaire job with me. She is a very good employee. I congraduate you Caroline, thank you and above all don't change. With you all patients will feel ready to heal even before the end of the therapy. Betty!
Fantastic experience: The team is fantastic! Thanks
Fantastic experience: The Physical Therapy has been great for my grandmother (Luz). I would recommend this place. It has help her a lot with her muscle aches and has interpreter for clients that does not speak English.
Fantastic experience: Now as a Bostonian over the years, I’ve been to plenty of physical therapy facilities. I have experienced horrible service from other rehab centers around the city. “Reasons for me writing this review this morning.” I want to give a special shout out and recognition to the BMC physical therapist on 890 River St., Hyde Park, MA. They are professional warm, kind, knowledgeable, personable, caring and working all-around as a unit Providing a great atmosphere for healing and strength. And for my physical therapist, that I have the pleasure of working with the majority of the time Michael Morrow PT you are phenomenal! Thank you all Sincerely Aryanna Cavalli
