Competitive EDGE Physical Therapy, Inc: Reviews
Fantastic experience: My experience with Kevin at Competitive Edge was fantastic! I had bounced around with other physical therapists for a couple years trying to rehab my knee. After my first session with Kevin I knew I had found the answer. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable but also takes the time to explain everything in a way I could understand. He also utilizes technology in a way I've never see at a PT. This allows him to measure your progress and clearly show and quantify how you've improved. After working with him for a couple months my knee is in better shape than it has been in years. I will, without a doubt, visit him in the future for any injury related issues and refer anyone who is in need.
Fantastic experience: I’ve never left a review before but I’m compelled to recommend Tim Dempsey to anyone struggling with pain with no progress in sight. He can help get you back to being yourself. — I was in excruciating pain all over my body, different muscles and nerves constantly flaring up, all stemming from a nasty ab strain that didn’t heal correctly. I had no idea how much it shifted my whole alignment. Many massage and physical therapy appoints later I was still in agony. After some research (and learning about PRI) I found competitive edge and I gave it a shot by signing up for their package offer. Session by session Tim got me get back to baseline. He is an expert at what he does and he accommodates a workout plan based on how you feel/how you perform. After sessions he is quick to communicate via email and appreciates updates on your progress. Trust the process, you’ll be fine in no time. He was also able to do remote appointments which was helpful when I couldn’t get out in their direction. I plan to keep checking in with Tim to work on sports performance and weight training now that I’m up and running. Rehab or training this is your best bet.
Fantastic experience: I've been seeing the professionals at Competitive Edge throughout the past several years, for injuries, strength training, and fitness advice, starting with the owner Kevin Vandi. In every case, the PTs at CE have been extremely knowledgeable, caring, and effective at helping me get back to my running and strength work. I recently worked with Kelly Milliken regarding a shoulder injury and Brad Sullivan regarding a pinched nerve. After trying two PTs in my local area, I drove 90 minutes to CE so that I could get the type of guidance and knowledge that they provide. They are also a joy to work with and go beyond the call to reach out and followup on progress. I'm very grateful to have them on my team!
Fantastic experience: I had an amazing experience working with Kelly and the Competitive Edge team. I really recommend doing the run gait analysis, which allowed her to pinpoint imbalances and weaknesses that were underlying the pain I was feeling. We worked on a combination of specific exercises to address my source of pain, as well as general strength training program. The cost was definitely on the pricy side, but they offer discounts for purchasing appointments in bundles, which I recommend since it will force you to commit to seeing the rehab program through. When I first came in, I was barely able to run without feeling sharp pain, and afterwards I progressed to running a half marathon, marathon, and 50k all pain-free. Thank you Kelly and the Competitive Edge team!
Fantastic experience: Working with the team has been awesome. The 1:1, hands on care they provide really differentiates them from other PTs I’ve been to. It made it way easier to have a dialogue and move outside of a formulaic plan to help solve my specific problems. I primarily worked with Kelly and she was fantastic. I also got the shockwave therapy which was a total game changer in helping me get over the hump on some nagging injuries. I’ve tried a lot of different alternative manual manipulations (cupping, electric pulse, ultrasound) and this one blew them out of the water. Research backed as well which many are not! Can’t recommend these people enough!
Fantastic experience: Superb team and service. Yes, it's not cheap - but it's worth every penny. If you take your running, your fitness and your health seriously, you have to do one running gait analysis in your life. What you do with the results is up to you and your goals, but I was amazed by how logical the reasons behind my back pain and other issues was, once the team had a chance to analyze it. Highly recommend this service and facility!
Fantastic experience: My 18 year old son had the opportunity to work with all of the coaches this summer in a 3 1/2 week period to address tendonitis in his knee. Kevin was able to diagnosis the problem immediately and then set my son up on a course of weekly exercises and shock treatment with the various coaches. My son made dramatic improvement in a short period of time. Most importantly, my son completed his treatment with knowledge of what he needed to do going forward to keep his body healthy while being a student athlete. I am also seeking physical therapy for arthritis in my neck and I am hopeful that I can learn how to prevent the arthritis from progressing and understand what I have been doing to aggravate it over the years. Courtney has worked with me in 2 sessions to help me understand my everyday movements and how they are affecting my neck. I am impressed so far and I am hopeful I will be able to get to the root cause of my pain. I have seen other physical therapists over the years and I will say that Competitive EDGE's approach is different and I have learned new things about my body mechanics that should help me in the years to come. I highly recommend Competitive EDGE for individuals who want to understand their body better and how they can perform at a higher level and or function day to day pain free.
Fantastic experience: I work with Tim Dempsey every week and his expertise and guidance has helped me build strength and balance, after I finished my PT with the amazing team at Competitive Edge. His attention to detail and unique focus have helped me rebalance my strength and build my stability. This is a very talented group and Tim brings a unique expertise to the table. I am so grateful to have found Competitive Edge. Thank you, Tim and thank you to everyone at Competitive Edge.
Fantastic experience: My daughter had been struggling with an injury and we knew in part due to her running gait. James was amazing in explaining how she could improve her gait and what exercises she needed to work on to prevent further injury. We found out details we never would have known because of the high tech equipment used. Absolutely invaluable experience! Highly recommend to any runner struggling with an injury.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been to many physical therapists for a chronic injury I’ve had, and no one was able to diagnose the root cause until I saw Courtney Sullivan! She is patient, encouraging, help me come up with a plan I can stick with, and most importantly has helped me make more progress in the last two months than anyone has helped me do in years. I cannot recommend her enough!
Fantastic experience: I worked with Kelly to resolve some heel pain and to prepare for a marathon training cycle. The running analysis was very helpful, and the adjustments Kelly helped me make to my form have allowed me to build my mileage without any reoccurring issues! Overall I had a great experience.
Fantastic experience: Competitive Edge PT is hands down the best physical therapy in the South Bay. The facility is clean and loaded with high tech equipment. The staff is very friendly and the physical therapists are very knowledgeable and they do a great job at personalizing workouts best for your recovery. Dr James Liaw helped me avoid invasive back surgery due to herniated discs. He built my strength and flexibility up and it allowed me to live my daily life without pain and I even returned to athletic activities that I thought I’d never be able to do again such as downhill skiing. I couldn’t recommend Competitive Edge more.
Fantastic experience: Kevin Vandi, the owner of Competitive Edge, is the best physical therapist that I have ever worked with. He has made a significant positive impact on my life. I developed a severe pinched nerve in my neck that was very painful and curtailed most of my normal daily activities. He treated me and provided specific exercises that have enabled me to regain my normal daily and sport activities. I highly recommend Kevin and Competitive Edge. He is very knowledgeable about mechanics of the body and can work with you on specific exercises to address specific issues. He will treat you for what you need and not give you just a standard approach to all.
Fantastic experience: I had a meniscus root repair and a bone graft done on my knee about 3 years ago. I struggled to get back to running, again, and thought I would never be able to complete another marathon. After I started Dr. Vandi’s Running Blueprint program last summer, I slowly got stronger, again, and with his running gait analysis, I was able to improve my biomechanics. Last weekend, I ran 26.2 miles with no knee pain. It was my first marathon post knee surgery and my 35th completed marathon. I am so happy! It’s been a long journey, but worth it and I couldn’t have done it without Dr. Vandi’s help. His knowledge of running biomechanics is invaluable.
Fantastic experience: Competitive EDGE PT is an excellent clinic, friendly staff and an awesome team of PTs. James Liaw compassionate, passion and knowledge in helping me restore mobility. He created an excellent plan for me to follow. I would come back here in a heartbeat.
Fantastic experience: Competitive Edge PT is an awesome clinic. I have been through a few rotations of physical therapy at a different facility before trying their approach at Competitive Edge. I finally have relief of back pain from strengthening core muscles in several different ways I had not tried before - and I thought I knew how to work my core LOL. Torey is thorough, gentle, and simply knows his stuff. All their therapists are great to work with and definitely worth the 90 minute drive. Look no further for your physical therapy needs!
Fantastic experience: I highly highly recommend this PT clinic if you're. Pricing might be a bit higher for some who never had to do rehab but you definitely get what you paid for. One of the coolest thing about this place is the amount of technology incorporated into their assessments/diagnosing. I've been dealing with an Achilles issue that likely developed from chronic misuse and sudden rapid increase in workload last year when gyms opened back up. It got the point where every step on a jog became altered and my ankle mobility went to the crapper. Subsequently, squat form was affected leading to mis use of the hips which now also affects my deadlift and partially benching due to inability to get even leg drive. I reached out to the team after an unsuccessful MD referral for PT. Kevin performed my intake assessment with pretty in depth description on what he sees, the physiology, and plan of action. I ended up working with Torey for basically all the follow up assessments. Torey is super knowledgeable and approachable. I essentially bombard him with questions on the why and what on the physiology and body response to the injuries/treatments. He not only explains starting off in laymen's terms but goes in depth of the science that for me makes sense (sports nutrition + exercise science background). We targeted some relearning of ankle and hip actions, running form adjustments, squatting form, shoulder re-education, and probably more. Anyways, successfully went on my first short run off a treadmill in 8 months. So thank you Torey for all you helped me with and put up with! And of course the entire team making scheduling sessions and payment schedule a breeze.
Fantastic experience: I was fortunate enough to experience Competitive Edge PT as a shadowing physical therapy student. I recognized that Competitive Edge PT was offering physical therapy in a way that was far more comprehensive and thorough than most other places, making it an especially desirable clinic for me to learn in. The way Competitive Edge PT runs their business enables its physical therapist's to develop a true understanding of what their patients are recovering from and working towards to better inform their treatment. I shadowed Dr. Torey Page, who demonstrated tremendous relationships and deep connections with each of his patients! This is something I have yet to observe elsewhere and made for a very unique learning experience. It is unlikely that you will witness this type of quality elsewhere, therefore I would definitely recommend Competitive Edge PT to anyone including friends, family, and fellow students.
Fantastic experience: When I had a frozen shoulder issue, a friend recommended Competitive Edge and I couldn't be more satisfied with the treatment. Kevin was honest with his assessment and prognosis, and designed a program for me that progressively alleviated the issue. These are great guys who will take very good care of you! Highly recommended!!
Fantastic experience: I was skeptical of all the 5 star reviews but decided to try it out. Kevin and team are just amazing for athletes. They helped my runner son during his high school cross country and track seasons. Unlike many PT Kevin doesn't force you to take more sessions. They also follow up if there any lingering issues. His running blue print program was also awesome and he sends inspiring messages and gives a lot of 1-1 attention. He is fantastic for runners! Only downside is that they are booked quite a bit in advance. But they recently added more trainers. Their tech is advanced
Fantastic experience: Over the past 2 years degenerative changes in my low back led to decreased mobility and daily pain. A spinal strengthening and stabilization program was recommended by the consulting physiatrist. I was referred to another PT group, but chose to obtain care at Competitive Edge. I had received great care from Kevin in past years in recovery from knee replacements and to improve mobility in both ankles. I started working with Torey in July of 2021. I did not realize how limited my mobility was, nor appreciate how much benefit could be gained from a structured and progressive program. I have benefited from the treatment, instruction and Torey’s constant encouragement. Improved motion and strength allows me to function well in my day-to-day life and to pursue the activities I enjoy without pain. My home video program is a great reference tool and keeps the progress going. Obtaining care from Competitive Edge is one of my better decisions .
Fantastic experience: I went to 3 other in-network therapy offices before trying Competitive Edge, they all had a pretty standard approach that predictably went nowhere. This place is different. My therapist was Torey who always knew what he was doing and was just fun to hang out with. He changed up my routine and kept trying various new exercises and stretches until we found stuff that worked. They have some fancy gizmos, for example strategically placed wireless electrodes, visualizing effort on a tablet to see what exactly is happening. It felt a bit like a videogame trying to perform a needed movement while not using a different muscle group that was causing problems. That instant feedback helps one know exactly whether you're doing something right. In the end my (shoulder) issue went away after several years of trying with others. Thank you, I will come back if needed!
Fantastic experience: This was my first PT experience, and I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Starting with my first phone call through the course of my treatment, every interaction with the Competitive Edge team was on point. The entire staff was professional, informative, and supportive. I was fortunate to work with Dana Lindberg, who took the time to understand my goals and condition. Dana created my recovery plan and personally led me through each step. Dana taught me tools and techniques that I can use post-treatment to reduce the risk of recurrence. I believe that Dana and the rest of the Competitive Edge team were invested in my recovery.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Dana Lindberg has helped me return to rock climbing, hiking, and cycling after surgical reconstruction of my left ankle. For the second time, Competitive EDGE has changed my life. During the past 20 years, various sports injuries have forced me to seek Physical Therapy throughout the Bay Area. Normally I spent 20 minutes with a physical therapist before getting passed off to an assistant. This therapy typically restores normal function, but often stops there. More rehab is needed to return to sports. Competitive EDGE is unique because every 1 hour appointment is spent with your individual therapist, who customizes your recovery program and works with you every step of the way. Using sophisticated technology to analyze your movement, they generate data about your specific body mechanics. This scientific approach enables them to make crucial adjustment to your form. After completing months of Physical Therapy with Dr. Lindberg, I transitioned to Strength Training sessions in order to keep him as a personal trainer during my return to sports. This is my second time using Competitive EDGE. A few years ago, they helped me rehabilitate a 5 year old injury to my left shoulder. The friendly staff is vaccinated and follow effective COVID protocols. I’ve been training there for my ankle since October 2020, and I’ve always felt safe.
Fantastic experience: I'm a keen runner, training six days a week and regularly competing in local ultramarathons. A friend recommended Competitive Edge to me following a hamstring injury earlier this year. Over the following three months, Josh Tatsuno and the rest of the Competitive Edge team worked with me on rehabilitating that specific injury, as well as helping me improve my overall running form to reduce the chance of recurrence. One thing I was particularly impressed with was the instrumented treadmill. As I was running and Josh was instructing me on the changes I should aim for, I was able to see the force with which my feet were hitting the treadmill, in real time. This made it much easier to see whether I was treading more lightly, and measured my progress over the course of treatment. I was able to return to running after a few sessions with Josh, following a run/walk plan to gradually ramp back up. It was great getting back out on the trails at Quicksilver after several months away! After completing 10 sessions of rehab work covered out-of-network by insurance, I'm now planning to pay out of pocket for one session a month to keep working on my running mechanics. Not the cheapest place to get physical therapy, but you get what you pay for. I highly recommend Competitive Edge to athletes in general and runners in particular.
Fantastic experience: I have been a runner for more than 30 years, having competed in nearly 20 marathons, twice as many half marathons and nearly 100 10Ks. I've also done dozens of triathlons, including a few half ironmans. About 5 years ago my knees were so painful, the pain would frequently wake me at night. Going up and down the stairs was always a challenge. Playing with my grandchildren became less joyful. An orthopedic surgeon advised me to "reinvent myself" and give up running. I did for about 2 years. However, I couldn't not run, so I started up again - and so did the pain. Then I came to Competitive Edge Physical Therapy. Josh shared his knowledge and expertise in a patient and emphatic manner. He explained the whys to what he was having me do. The technical feedback provided the necessary data to determine my personal training plan. After working with him for about 6 months, I am now back to running pain free. And now, as I near my 60th birthday, instead of reinventing myself, I am back to embracing my passion. Thank you, Josh and thank you, Competitive Edge Physical Therapy.
Fantastic experience: I have done PT at several highly regarded clinics and Competitive Edge is by far the best. First, you only work with the therapist; no assistance or interns. From the in depth diagnostic work to the recovery plan design to the progress measurements and adjustments you work with the same therapist. I was very fortunate to work with Dana Lindberg whose background in sports and genuine commitment to helping people improve their performance and enjoyment of an active lifestyle is evident when you first meet him. Second, they rely heavily on data and tech-driven feedback. Along with the therapist's qualitative review they gather baseline data on everything from range of motion to specific muscle activation. From there they design recovery plans that correct the underlying problems and enable you to see the improvements from session to session. As is inherent in physical therapy, there are numerous adjustments and modifications to the plan throughout the recovery process. The incredible thing about Dana and Comp Edge is that they anticipate these adjustments and mods and maintain an improvement continuity that produces awesome results. Have to acknowledge how great Jenn and the rest of the Comp Edge team are as well. They're the best!
Fantastic experience: After injuring my knee and limping for six months I decided to visit Competitive Edge. In a few weeks of therapy my limp disappeared an I am walking normally. I haven't had a problem with my knee since the therapy. Josh Tatsuno is a DPT he treated my injured shoulders. My shoulders were so locked up I could not put on a shirt. Working with Josh for a few sessions corrected the problems with my shoulders and now I have a full range of motion with my arms, they are stronger too. I doubted anyone could relieve my chronic back pain caused by an old injury. Josh Tatuno did more for relieving my back pain than all the doctors, surgeons, and physical therapists combined. More importantly, Josh taught me how to maintain a pain free back and avoid injury. All of the Doctors of Physical Therapy at Competitive EDGE Physical Therapy are terrific. Their knowledge, experience, advanced techniques, and compassion set them apart from other physical therapists. Daniel D.
Fantastic experience: After two knee surgeries in less than a year, I finally decided to find an expert who could help me run without injury. Going to Competitive Edge was a great decision. The system is methodical, diagnosing all of my issues and working on them step by step. After three months, I have much more confidence in my running and in being able to run for years without injury. Josh was a great physical therapist and all of the people are friendly.
Fantastic experience: Competitive Edge has 100% 5-star reviews for a reason. If you want the best, you need to go here. I did a Running Analysis with Josh which taught me more about running form and injury prevention than I have learned in the previous 15 years of distance running experience. Between my sessions with Kevin and Josh, I went from being completely sidelined from running due to PTT/Achilles Tendinitis, to comfortably and confidently running the trails and roads again. The individual feedback and communication with the PT's are priceless. If you are struggling to come back from injury, make the investment and get a Running Analysis, then follow their program, you will not regret it. Edit - after not being able to run due to PTT/Achilles Tendinitis for months, I just finished a Half Ironman last weekend. I was set up with a solid weekly mileage plan based on my fitness level and injury management and was able to finish the run strong.
Fantastic experience: Easily one of the best (if not the best) sports physio I've been too, and super friendly staff as well. I've been a runner for many years (20 marathons) and recently had some issues in one of my knees. Came in for an evaluation and was impressed with their individual care. All of the treatment plans and exercises I was given were tailored to my individual condition and the advice was the opposite of cookie cutter (something I've seen at other PTs) They monitor your progress and update your exercises/treatments as things change. The tools/technology they use to evaluate your progress help you understand what you can do to improve your form, strength, etc. in order to reduce the risk of injury in the future - not just treat your current ailment. I think they've seen a lot of runners and the experience they have with this shows. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: I highly recommend Kevin and his team at Competitive Edge Physical Therapy. I had torn Achilles tendon on both legs and meniscus issues over 25 years. I had not been able to do much of the sports I love. My physical conditions got worse over the years. I always had swellings around the knees, hip and back pain, and limited mobility. After trying many different practices with the same fruitless results, I felt discouraged about the pains that I have to endure for daily activities. In 2018, I decided to get back to swimming, running, cycling and outdoor activities that I really have missed. I have managed to complete a few races, but it is no fun to go through pains constantly. Per recommendation of friends at the Silicon Valley Tri Club, I came to Josh and Kevin in May 2021. Starting with a survey of issues that trouble me and the goals I want to achieve, they had me do a Running GAIT Analysis. They placed body sensors on me to measure which muscles are being used, had me run on a treadmill with force sensors and videoed me in many angles. I was blown away by the level of detailed information in the report. Josh explained to me issues with my running form, the angels of my hips and knees, the amount of forces applied to my knees, and the reasons why I constantly felt pains and swellings in my knees. Josh and Kevin then developed a structured plan to fix the problems by working on strength training and improve my form progressively. After only 10 weeks, I had much strong glutes and core. I was able to run with more knee bend, land more softly for better shock absorption, and run longer distance at faster speed. Surprisingly, the swellings around my knees were 100% gone. I used to wake up with fluids built up in my knees, which is very uncomfortable. By correcting my running form and strengthening my glutes, I was able to avoid continuously exerting a force on the injury spots in my meniscus and eliminate the inflammations. It is truly unbelievable that I am able to do pain-free with increasing training load. Josh and Kevin are very professional, knowledgeable, and pleasant to work with. They really put a lot of efforts to help the clients and are always available for questions I have for them. I cannot recommend Josh and Kevin highly enough.
Fantastic experience: Competitive Edge has been an enormous help to me getting back into running. I saw other physical therapists around the area for about a year before coming to Competitive Edge. I was told that I had tendonitis, but nothing I ever did seemed to help it. After coming to Competitive Edge and doing their initial evaluation, Kevin and his staff were able to help me discover that I was diagnosed incorrectly, and the injury was with my nerve. With the help of the amazing doctors and the incredible technology that they have, they were able to help me fully recover and finish out my full cross country season. In addition to the knowledge and processes that they use to help people recover, I always felt the upmost support from everyone who works there. I enjoyed going to my appointments and getting to catch up with the staff. Competitive Edge is truly a family and will welcome anyone who comes to them for help, as they did for me.
Fantastic experience: I had multiple partial tears in my shoulder/rotator cuff for about two years. I tried a PT recommended by my doctor but that never seemed to help me. So I went to Competitive Edge and I'm glad I did. I was finally able to lift weights again without any shoulder pain. Torey showed me how to do multiple exercises to increase the stability and endurance of my shoulder. He didn't just give me some bands and sent me home like other PTs. He made sure I was doing everything correctly and we developed a plan that would help get me back in the gym. Torey and the rest of the Competitive Edge team are amazing and I'd 100% recommend them to anyone in need of a physical therapist.
Fantastic experience: Competitive EDGE was the first place I was able to truly get to the root of my decade long foot pain. I have seen several physical therapists since college, and this is the first clinic that correctly identified the source of my issue, and helped me develop a long term solution to be able to walk and run pain free. 45 minutes used to be my limit for tolerating walking pain. I am now able to walk for over 2 hours pain free, and have been making consistent progress with their running program with no setbacks. The financial commitment is definitely significant, and it did give me hesitation on doing a 12 week program. However, my first session was thorough, detailed, and data driven, far exceeding my expectations leading into it. I was confident this was the best thing I could do for my long-term health and athletic performance, and it has been the best investment I have made in every way. Their capability to provide real time visual and data feedback on your movements as well as their individualized care plans make them the standard setters for the highest quality physical therapy care I have received. Special thanks to Torey for all his time and effort to get me back on my feet and moving consistently again towards my future athletic goals.
Fantastic experience: I came to Competitive Edge about 3 months ago, due to consistent hip pain while running. The entire staff was extremely friendly and the facility as a whole was clean and took proper precautions amidst the COVID-19 pandemic (mask requirement, temperature check upon entry, etc). Upon evaluation my therapist, Torey Page, was able to identify the issue with my hip and set up a program that would allow me to better activate and strengthen the weaker muscles that were leading to my hip pain. In addition to at home exercises, during each appointment Competitive Edge utilized several different technologies (video analysis, EMG sensors, force plates, pressure treadmill, etc.) to collect data in order to better understand my issue, track progression, and most importantly for me to see and understand the issue and how to fix it. This meant we also did a lot of work on my running form throughout my therapy program in order to reinforce proper technique and reduce risk of future injury. The before and after videos speak for themselves. I can now run pain free and cannot think of anything else that could have made my physical therapy experience any better. Thank you Torey and the rest of the Competitive Edge staff!
Fantastic experience: I feel fortunate to have been referred to the Competitive Edge team. I have been running for over 40 years and it is part of my lifestyle. It is my way of relaxing and staying healthy and it is also something I like sharing with others as I coach at the high school level. I thought my ability to run had come to an end three years ago after I was hit by a car and after two years of trying PT, Chiropractor, Yoga, and the works, a friend introduced me to Kevin and the team. They focused on getting me back on the road safely and reducing the impact that running had on my spine (I had back surgery as a result of the accident). They gave me core exercises and a warmup routine to ignite the muscles I need to work while I run. The result feels amazing. It has been a year of rebuilding and I am now back on the road and able to run. It has been a game changer. In the process I have referred several of my friends and athletes to Competitive Edge. They all come away with new tools, a healthier body and thankful for the introduction. If you need PT or want to improve your running, please give them a try.
Fantastic experience: I highly recommend Competitive Edge Physical Therapy - Josh's data driven & personal approach was fantastic. Before going through PT, I was in chronic pain and unable to participate in the sport that I loved. After 4 months of PT with Josh and hours in the gym, I've changed my running gait, developed strength and stability, and learned a ton about my biomechanics. Competitive Edge gives you the foundation, knowledge and tools to keep you healthy and strong. My time with them was life changing and would recommend it to anyone struggling with chronic pain or an injury.
Fantastic experience: As a former collegiate athlete I have spent a considerable amount of time in physical therapy clinics over the years, rehabbing everything from strained muscles to a torn Achilles. So when I started having persistent hip pain in my late 30's that was preventing me from running and my normal activities, I knew I needed something different. Thanks to a recommendation from a client I came across Competitive Edge. Rather than focus on the tradition modalities of PT, their focus was on identification of the muscle weaknesses/imbalance that were causing the problem in the first place. Their use of data and technology is on the cutting edge of modern rehabilitation, and in a few short months they were able to get me back to full strength when I was otherwise worried only surgery would be the answer. Kevin has done a great job of building a practice that focuses on movement and strengthening, and I have a few friends and colleagues who have had similar success. My therapist Josh Tatsuno DPT was a perfect fit for me, particularly as a former collegiate athlete himself, he knew how to get the most out of my sessions. He is incredibly bright and understands the foundational principles of movement and corrective strengthening exercises, laying out a perfect road map with the consistent objective of getting me back to the activities I desire as a 37 year old father of two. I will continue to see Josh on a regular basis, leveraging the technology available at Competitive Edge to ensure I am continuing to recruit the appropriate muscle groups that will lead to long-term health and injury-free activity. There's no one doing what these guys are doing and if anyone is having recurring pain from running or other activities, these are the guys to get you back to full strength. Thank you to Kevin, Josh, Jenn and the entire staff! See you again soon... Mario
Fantastic experience: After two ACL surgeries in my 20s, I have spent a considerable amount of time in PT over the years. When I started having persistent knee pain in my 30's and into my 40's that then cascaded into other issues, I stopped running. In fact, I was told by several doctors that I shouldn't run, and years of PT that never solved the issues seemed to reinforce this. However, as a lifelong runner, I just couldn't accept a life without running. I knew I needed something different for PT, and I came across Competitive Edge while on Youtube, where they start with technology and then focus on individualized movement and strengthening through an effective progression, working on the whole body as a system rather than a single joint or area of the body. My therapist, Josh Tatsuno DPT, was a perfect fit for me. My issues were complicated and required a lot of time and creativity to work through, especially since we were trying to solve issues that have persisted for decades. He is incredibly thoughtful, knowledgeable, and flexible. Over the months, he's helped me get back to running. Though I still have a ways to go to be completely pain free. He has me headed in the right direction, and I've made more progress than I ever have in the past. I will continue to see Josh in the months to come to keep progressing. If you need PT that is individualized and effective, I highly recommend Competitive Edge PT to get you back to the activities you love. Thank you to Josh, Kevin, and Jenn and the entire staff! See you again soon! Samara
Fantastic experience: Everyone at Competitive Edge is fantastic. Knowledgeable and caring with state of the art equipment, they really helped me run pain-free, stronger and happy again. I injured my leg in July and in December I was able to run a marathon PR. The gait analysis was really detailed and insightful. The exercise program is detailed, intense and effective
Fantastic experience: I am an senior age competitive triathlete and went to Competitive Edge to improve my running performance and minimize risk of future injuries. Matt Rickert's analysis of my running form through Competitive Edge's advanced diagnostics, highlighted a number of useful changes. Combined with the strength and muscle activation exercises he prescribed my running form has improved substantially with significantly faster times at the same heart rate. I highly recommend Competitive Edge.
Fantastic experience: I can only say good things about this place! I’d been dealing with a running injury (runners knee) for about three years prior to this. I’d seen 4 different PT’s before this, but none of them allowed me to actually make significant progress to begin training again. So I was hesitant to commit more time and money to PT but my first (free!) consultation with Competitive Edge gave me a ton of confidence. What stood out to me most was how athlete focused they were, a big contrast to most PT places which mostly just seemed to be focused on eliminating the pain rather than actually fixing the problem. I had Josh as my PT. First I did the running analysis (~$450) and then got the ten visit bundle (~$250 each at the time but I believe this is increasing). I really liked how there was a clear progression in my therapy. The running analysis helped them to diagnose me, and afterwards every session built on the previous in order to move me forward in my therapy. This is compared to other PT places where I felt like every time I’d come in we would just do the same thing, hoping that eventually it would actually work for me. The therapy itself was a lot of hard and tedious work but it was definitely worth it. I felt my strength, flexibility and running form all dramatically improve as I continued to work on the exercises. Within two or three sessions I was already able to run with very little lingering knee pain: something I never accomplished with years of therapy before this! I finished the program a couple months ago and could not be more pleased with the results. I don’t even think about my knee pain anymore when I run. I’ve already ran new PRs, and am now training for my first ever marathon. I had thought the big mileage required for marathon training and my long runs would be too much so soon after my injury history, but so far it hasn’t been a problem at all. So I’d highly recommend Competitive Edge to anyone! I think it’s decently pricey but totally worth it. Some various other things I really liked about them: - The visits are very focused and essentially the whole time is 1:1 with a lot of form corrections, teaching new exercises, etc. Much better than just coming in and doing the same exercises every time. - The visits are much less frequent than other places I’ve been. The general idea is visits are only for working on form and learning new things, the day to day exercises are expected to be done on your own time. I went once a week for the first few visits and then every 2-3 weeks. This let’s you save money while having the therapist able to track your progression for much longer (my total therapy lasted ~6 months).
Fantastic experience: I am a triathlete, and I was having knee and sciatic pain when running more than 6 miles. Some members of my triathlon club recommended I contact Competitive Edge for a gait analysis. After reading the details on the website and downloading some of the free ebooks, I decided to go for it. It was a great decision. After analyzing my run on the treadmill and analyzing the strength and weakness of my body, Competitive Edge created a custom program for me. I followed the set of exercises over three months by myself and with regular checkup at their premises. I was extremely motivated as I had a big race coming. After two months, my sciatic pain disappeared; my long runs were often pain-free. After just three months, not only I PRed my half marathon on an half ironman by 4 minutes (1:37 vs. 1:41), but I also did it without pain. I was also way less sore after the race. I feel I can make even more progress as I am not yet wholly balanced. I will continue doing my exercises regularly and do a checkup every month. I have another 1/2 ironman at the end of the year to measure the progress. BTW, I traveled for four consecutive weeks in Europe during this period, and they adjusted the program, so I could learn enough exercise before leaving. I sent a video including most of my practices, and they reviewed it and gave back advice, recommendations, and adjusted the program based nm y progress! I strongly recommend that you contact Competitive Edge if you don’t have fun, due to pain, while training.
Fantastic experience: In 2015 I started researching the web to see who the best physical therapist was in the area. I studied sports science at University and out of all of the physical therapists in the area, Competitive Edge seemed to be using the most modern technology and most cutting edge methods. I was not disappointed and quickly found Kevin Vandi to be the most detailed, methodical physical therapist I have ever worked with. I am an MLS Academy coach for the San Jose Earthquakes and Competitive Edge have consistently helped me stay strong and cure any injuries that have occurred for me personally over the last 3 years. Kevin and his team then started working their magic on many of my players who needed more accurate and quicker assessments to get back to their best for important games and showcases. Not only did Kevin help players get back onto the field quicker, he also helped players come back stronger. If you have any doubts about an injury or potential weakness athletically then Kevin is without a doubt the expert in the Bay Area.
Fantastic experience: I am a 60 year-old life-long runner who developed a degenerative meniscus tear training for my 11th marathon a year ago. After surgery and a short break for basic recovery, Matt and the AWESOME team at Competitive EDGE did a thorough evaluation of my running gait, developed a treatment plan for me, and got me back on the road again, pain-free and confident that with continued practice on my strength program I will continue enjoying running for a long time to come. They gave me my running life back, and that is PRICELESS. The technology Competitive Edge uses is incomparable - it's simply the best at pinpointing problems and clarifying what corrective measures need to be taken to develop strength, improve form, and ensure injury-free performance. I received and email update after each PT session documenting my exercise routine, which was helpful for (forgetful) me. The front desk staff are professional, responsive, friendly, and engaging, and the PT staff are absolutely top-notch. Thank you again Matt, Kevin, and all of Competitive Edge!
Fantastic experience: I suffered a knee injury playing soccer back in August of 2017. After many weeks of playing through pain and seeing multiple doctors who didn’t have answers, I reached out to my brothers soccer coach. He highly recommended Competitive Edge, and suggested I give them a try. I went in to see Kevin looking for nothing more than something that would get me back on the field ASAP. This experience was so much more than that! Kevin sat down with my parents and I and helped us set a recovery plan. The regiment was hard in the beginning, but the results had me back better than ever before. I am stronger, more agile, and aware of things I can do to help prevent major injuries. The use of modern technology to pinpoint weakness and the root of the injury is so effective and not what you will have access to an many other clinics. Having been to many physical therapists for other sports injuries, this is by far the most impressive clinic I have ever been to. Thanks to Kevin and the fantastic Competitive Edge staff I have been playing soccer full time for the past 5 months with no complications!
Fantastic experience: Competitive Edge is a great rehab and sports performance practice. Quick backdrop- I am a physical therapist by profession as well. I came off of a long flight, and my low back was in a very stiff and painful state. I was treated by Paul, who was able to quickly evaluate and treat my low back. By the end of my first visit, my low back pain was significantly improved, and the pain has gone away after I did some specific stretches that Paul reviewed with me. What's great about this place is that you are fully 1:1 with your PT, and the technology they use is cutting edge, which gives you data and information about the way you move, that you would not be able to acquire at your typical hospital-owned system or "mill" type of PT practice. I highly recommend patients in the bay area seek care at CompEdge.
Fantastic experience: I began training for my first marathon in February, the race was scheduled for the end of July. In early May I began to feel symptoms of an injury in my lower leg which grew worse over time, eventually making it impossible to run. When I first went to Competitive EDGE I didn't think there was any way I would be able to compete in my planned marathon but Matt diagnosed the problem and quickly got me back on my feet through a series of strengthening exercises and running form adjustments. I finished my PT appointments just a few weeks before my race and I was able to run the marathon pain free. I owe Matt and Competitive EDGE a huge thanks for making the achievement of this goal possible. Thanks!
Fantastic experience: I've been a patient of Kevin Vandi's for 6 years now and at Competitive Edge for 3 of those 6 years. Kevin helped me through the recovery of a very difficult rotator cuff surgery in which I now have full range of motion and strength. It was painful but well worth being able to return to my active life style. What I appreciate most about Kevin is that he is knowledgeable and able to customize his sessions to fit my needs. Whether it's shoulder, neck, hip or back issues, he gets me back to my active life style. I'm in my mid-fifties and enjoy hiking, golfing, and biking and there always seems to be something he can help me improve on. In addition to his expertise in the clinic, he helps me improve my strength and flexibility by giving me guidance with home exercises I can do myself. All the staff at Competitive Edge are knowledgable and capable. They are friendly and professional. I really don't know what I would do without them!
