McFarland Clinic’s Sports Medicine providers take a team approach to caring for athletes and active people. Our athletic trainers and physical therapists are committed to providing extraordinary care for high schools, colleges, club teams, and local recreational groups, as well as individuals who are physically active.

We step in at the point of injury, providing athletes with direct access to a variety of medical professionals who can help manage injuries as quickly and safely as possible. These professionals include:

McFarland Clinic Physical Therapy industrial therapy program focuses on returning injured workers to their jobs quickly and safely, which means workers compensation and lost-time costs are reduced. Physical and occupational therapists work together to develop treatment plans specific to the demands of an individual’s job, and they encourage communication among employees, employers, and insurance companies.

The Occupational Therapists at McFarland Clinic focus on rehabilitation from the elbow to the fingertips. Many are Certified Hand Therapists. We help patients restore normal hand function for work, school, recreation, and daily living.

Women can present with unique health issues and concerns which may change throughout their lifespan. Our women’s health program offers a variety of services developed to address women’s specific health concerns. These services include:

McFarland Clinic’s Aquatic Therapy services can help improve strength and conditioning and relieve aches and pains. Our SwimEx pool allows a therapeutic low impact exercise program in a private and comfortable environment.

Astym® therapy targets the cause of pain--not just the symptoms. It is the regenerative medicine of therapy, designed to restore soft tissues at a cellular level. Astym therapy regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.) and removes unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions. Astym therapy helps patients restore their movement, getting rid of their pain and giving them back their lives.

McFarland Clinic provides pediatric Physical Therapy services at our West Ames and Nevada sites. Infants and young children often present unique challenges during treatment. Our pediatric specialists have the tools and proper advanced training needed to treat these children.

McFarland Clinic Physical Therapy’s Vestibular Rehab services treat patients suffering from dizziness and balance disorders. Our physical therapy professionals evaluate each patient individually. They then create a specific program based on the patient’s condition, lifestyle, and needs, allowing the patient to get back to normal daily activities and independent function.

Physical therapy is a healthcare profession that helps individuals whose movement and function are adversely affected by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors. Together with the help of physical therapists, these patients work toward the goals of relieving pain, as well as developing, maintaining and restoring maximum movement and functional ability. The cornerstones of physical therapy treatment are therapeutic exercise, manual therapy and functional training.

The Occupational Therapists at McFarland Clinic focus on rehabilitation from the elbow to the fingertips. Some occupational therapists are Certified Hand Therapists (CHT). We help patients restore normal hand function for work, school, recreation, and daily living. We treat hand, wrist, and elbow injuries, disorders, and post-operative conditions.

A prescription for physical therapy is not required in the State of Iowa except by some government insurances (e.g. Medicare, Medicaid). We will work with you and your primary care provider to obtain a prescription if it is needed.

Call 515-663-4886 to schedule an appointment at one of McFarland Physical Therapy's nine Central Iowa locations. All clinics have extended hours to meet the demands of your busy schedule. When you call, please have your physical therapy prescription (if needed) and insurance card available. Having the insurance card will allow us to verify your insurance benefits and provide you with an estimate of coverage.

McFarland Physical Therapy recognizes that open, honest communication among the members of your healthcare team (you, your therapist, your healthcare provider, etc.) is essential to making your rehabilitation experience a success. As a result, the physical therapist will send your healthcare provider a complete written report that includes the findings of the initial evaluation, the assessment of the problem and a detailed description of the treatment plan.

The physical therapist will continue to update your healthcare provider with written progress reports each time you are re-evaluated and before each follow-up appointment (it is important to let your therapist know if you have an upcoming appointment with your healthcare provider).

At McFarland Physical Therapy our professional staff emphasizes the importance of continuing your treatment with a home exercise program. Your therapist will design an at-home program for you and provide detailed instructions. This will allow you to continue the progress you made while in therapy and avoid further injury or setbacks. We are partners in your recovery, so even after discharge if you have questions, call us, and we will be more than happy to help you with any questions or needs you may have.

Fantastic experience: They were able to see me quickly within 10-20 minutes of my arrival and the front desk staff, nurse, doctor, and X-ray tech were all very friendly and accommodating!

Fantastic experience: Bruce Behrens was my Physical Therapist for two separate serious leg problems and his professional help was instrumental in my recovery. His calm demeanor and friendly nature made me feel comfortable during my sessions which was important to me during that painful and very difficult time in my life. I will never forget how he helped me maximize my recovery and I will always consider him a friend. I give Bruce my highest recommendations for anyone needing PT. Nathan Aitchison and Kristyne Letze provided my physical therapy on a number of occasions and they each helped me with some specific problems that were difficult to overcome. I enjoyed the time they worked with me to speed my recovery and I highly recommend them for PT.

Fantastic experience: I was a skeptic, too - how can physical therapy resolve a rotator cuff problem? I saw Kayla Roof just three times and although I've got a little way to go to get back to pre-injury normal, I'm able to continue the exercises on my own. My range of motion is back, I'm using five pound weights instead of one pound weights, and I'm back to a regular exercise routine. I had thought at age 66 my exercise days were over and they're not. Thank you!

Fantastic experience: I came in with a shoulder injury and skepticism, but I have been amazed at how effective the PT has been. A big shout-out to Bruce Behrens-professional , knowledgeable, and kind. Friendly staff and clean facilities, also. I will leave with a shoulder that is so much better along with exercises to continue building overall muscle and bone health. Thank you!!
