Negative experience: The hospital mentioned two places when they said mom needed a brief rehab. The first didn't take her insurance so we were left with Heartland. Itvwas a mistake from the beginning. I was told i could only visit during certain hours. Then i was slapped with a bunch of papers that i asked to read and was told either sign them or shes going home. I was treated very rudely. I was finally allowed to see her for a very limited time and take her clothes and a bag of snacks i knew she liked. She was transferred from the hospital so she had no clothes at all with her. I purchased new gowns and underwear for her since i had been told she may stay 30 days. She came home after three days. Every piece of new underwear all the new sports bras were missing. She came home wearing the only underwear she had left. She had twenty snack cakes and 16 packs of Lance Crackers and came home with none. This place has some nice employees, one nurse and a case worker, but honestly they took anything that wasn't all lady-ish. Dont take your loved one there.

Negative experience: When my mother got COVID in November I never received a single phone call regarding her condition, no one in my entire family knows if she is alive or dead since that call. Walking into the building gets you turned away. WHAT ARE YOU HIDING HEARTLAND??

Fantastic experience: This is a fantastic facility with an outstanding team in place. From admission to discharge, the staff is helpful and knowledgeable.

Fantastic experience: Everybody here treated me exceptionally well. They looked after my needs, asked me about what I needed, and helped me with what I needed. They helped ice my knee, gave great therapy, and even worked with my specialized diet. They have helped greatly with my discharge process and getting me set up with everything I need to be successful at home.

Negative experience: My father died just as Heartland was being evacuated for Dorian. Of course there was some confusion, we understand that. However, they could not have been more disrespectful and careless in their handling of the situation both during and after. We received no official call of condolences or base information for how to proceed from the institution where he had been for nearly five years (it is now nearly three weeks later). Not one gesture towards us of information from the leaders of this institution regarding how to handle his items, last bill, or information on his care - all communication was initiated by my family to this day, and of course made a difficult time that much more difficult. Worst was they cleaned out his belongings immediately, without our permission and without even informing us before we got to his room to find it empty (I had sent a message immediately on the day of death to say we were coming to clean it out as soon as they reopened). It was a shock. When we were given his boxed items we found that they had taken our precious family photos off the wall and stuck them together with the scotch tape used to attach them to the wall, ruining them. They also wrote his date of death directly onto one of his items in indelible ink. (see pics) We were deprived of the rite of final handling of his items. Then they used the hurricane as an excuse, this was upon my calling days after the hurricane had passed to solve yet another problem they hadn't informed us about - all evacuees had returned days prior - they had had plenty of time. I want to point out that we were paying the full exorbitant price of this institution, not that any patient on medicaid should be treated otherwise, but I cringe to think how Heartland behaves towards the latter. I am disgusted by the lack of care and respect shown and I also find it baffling. We are putting our parents into their care and as one friend said, "it is just bad business" to reveal how much this HCR ManorCare institution actually does not care or think. Now that weeks have gone by and we've still had no unforced acknowledgment or apology, I have no choice but to tell the truth via other outlets like this one. Heartland of West Ashley, you made a terrible time even worse than I could have imagined. I suppose you will be asking me to contact your "care line" because you can't discuss a patient here. Well I've called enough times. You call me.

Fantastic experience: Excelent place if your willing to work & do what they ask of you in order to get better. Food is good, housekeeping excelent, Adminstration personel I can't say enough good things about. But most of all the Ot &Pt department guide you, give you goals that can be achieved, are understanding of your particular sickness & work with each person on an individual bases. I highly recomened Heartland of West Ashley if you want to get better.

Negative experience: This facility is incompetent. It took 4 days to get a remote to adjust my fathers bed so that he could ease the pain in his neck. After the eighth complaint and raised voice he had a remote within 30 minutes. Oh, and expect to find your loved one laying in urine. Never again sill he go to this place..not even for a day! I am told that Roper St Francis is the place to go.

Negative experience: My mom had a UTI, complained about her symptoms for over two weeks. Her mental and physical status started to decline, then therapy said that she hit a "plateau", but it was a result of her state and refused to work with her. The doctors finally gave got her on antibiotics but therapy still refused to work with her, even though they knew how a UTI can affect an older patient who happens to be a stroke victim. I feel totally let down and discouraged after this experience.

Negative experience: If you care about your loved one, keep them away from this money hungry facility that cares nothing about patients. My mother is there currently, 3rd day of hell. She arrived around 2 PM on Friday for impatient rehabilitation after a hip replacement. They would not let her take her medication that she brought with her and instead, ordered all new medications from a pharmacy that was over two hours drive away. Her pain medication and other drugs arrived after 10:30PM and wasn't administered these drugs until 11:00 PM after I called to check on the status of her medication. She was without pain meds from roughly 12 noon until 11PM that night. They were supposed to have her evaluated by Heartlands Doctor and the physical therapist who were both supposed to see her that day. None of those things happened. She has a cold and raw throat, yet no doctor visit. She is in screaming pain, no doctor visit. They dropped her down on the toiled on Friday because they had no seat extender and it caused her hip to swell up, again, no doctor or physical therapist. I spoke to the nurse that was working that day and asked for her pain medication to be switched to ON ORDER instead of PER REQUEST. She didn't do it. I talked to Kerry, the nurse supervision the next day and ask for her pain meds to be switched to On Oder and Kerry didn't do it. I finally got Monah this afternoon to call the on call doctor and now, after all weekend of intense pain, mom is getting pain medications on order. She still has a fever, still in severe pain, still isn't monitored for other underlying conditions and yet NO DOCTOR will call me, or go give her an initial evaluation for any treatment. It's my opinion that this facility only cares about money and has no interest in patient care. Why do I say this....because they don't have an in house pharmacy, they make their patients wait up to a day or maybe longer to get them prescribed medications, at least two nurses failed to take care of my mother's pain needs by contacting a doctor to change the prescription, they dropped her down onto the toilet seat the first day and it's unknown how many times they've done this since then. The doctor has been asked to come in and evaluate her and he or she is too busy or can't be bothered to treat or evaluate her. I live in a different state or I'd be in her room 24-7 making sure she has medical care but I can't be there. This facility is pure hell for anyone sent there. Don't be fooled by the lovely pictures on their website, you'll end up in a room with not one single amenity and is straight out of the movie "shutter island." As a military member, I expect a medical treatment facility to provide at least the bare bones minimum that is required of them and this facility doesn't. I have a difficult job and is very demanding. I expected them to take care of my mother as they have promised to do, but aren't. This is causing me a great deal of heartache and is definitely effecting my work performance as United States Service Member. This facility is shameful and should be avoided at all costs.

Negative experience: I was extremely disappointed in the non-care that my mother received. She was there for 2 1/2 days and they didn't have her meds twice in that short time. Took over an hour to get water. We have her at home with us now with a broken hip because we were truly scared to leave her there, even with us in and out all during the day and early evening. She was there for rehab and had no schedule.

Negative experience: This place has detoriated drastically since I was there in Jan. There were always groups of 3 standing around and talking in the halls, It took 8 days before I could get a remote for the tv. Staff talked and argued in the hall about things. One morning I did not have a wash off until 11 am. Getting someone to help me to the bathroom in time was a problem. giving me a urinal and putting on a depend was not the answer. The commode lid was badly stained and requested to put a decent one in its place. Most of the staff did not know anything and they were desperately in need of some adminstrator. The room was for the pits with wall paper coming off the walls and furniture's comdition was deplorable. The food was great and so was therapies. The few individuals who knew what to do were wonderful but the rest was for the pits. I kept asking to be moved to another room, even though there were empty rooms they always had an excuse not to be able to move me. The cleaning staff were nice even though my first dump had a roach on the floor, cracker crumbs and roach leavings in the drawer and the closet had a terrible oder. I would not recommend this facility to anyone.
