Sutter Rehabilitation Institute: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Very excellent care from very excellent people. Did not have any staff or nurses or anyone randomly yell at us, like at the Jackson Sutter Hospital ER. Obviously, the management of this Rehab facility is much much better than the management of the Jackson Sutter Hospital ER, where we encountered at least 2 ER nurses with anger issues. Big improvement in the non-ER of the jackson hospital and at this rehab facility. In general, it might be good to worry more about patients, paying the great nurses and staff and doctors MORE and LESS for exec bonuses. Execs and management basically do not care about er nurses with anger issues. We were promised they would contact us to take our complaint in detail and they did not do so. They do not care. Pay these good people more, cut exec and management salaries, they do very little or nothing to weed out people with anger issues.
Thank you for sharing! - Social Care Team
Positive experience: Great hospital, great staff, BUT super busy. It’s the only large scale Hospital in a broad area of the foothills and Sacto valley, so it’s crowded.
Thank you for sharing. - Social Care Team
Fantastic experience: My 96 year old mom broken her hip and after surgery she went to a rehab facility which was not a good fit for her. We were blessed to have her transferred to SRI in Roseville. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful and caring staff, nurses, the OT and PT staff were to our mom. The team was extremely responsive and we all agree to give a huge shout out to Executives Tammy and Stephanie, PT Robert, OT Christi, our wonderful Dr. Matthews and Dr. M, the amazing nurses - Josephine and Janine to name a few and the Security Team. Thank you to everyone and my mom will miss you all but so happy she’ll be heading home tomorrow. We love you all! GG and family
Hi Marilyn, this is so great to read. Thank you! - Social Care Team
Fantastic experience: We are very grateful for all the service provided to my wife after spinal surgery. From the housekeeping service to the doctor, nurses, therapists and dietitians, everyone deserves a big star of gratitude and professionalism. It is an exceptional center.
Mario, wow, thank you so much for your kind words! We'll gladly share this with the rest of the team. - Social Care Team
Negative experience: They are not interested in their patients, they are more interested in $$$$ and stats. They refused a patient and then tried to blame everyone else. When I called still same run around.
We'd like to know more about this so we can better support you - please use the following to provide further details of your experience: http://sutterhealth.org/feedback Hugo, Social Care Team
Fantastic experience: The staff here has been great. It has been an integral part of my recovery. T#
Hi Lisa, Thank you for sharing! - Social Care Team
Fantastic experience: After a major thoracic, lumbar and sacral operation, I was transferred to SRI for a 12 day stay. The staff, nurses and therapists were all wonderful and personable, going above and beyond to make sure I had what I needed. The facility was up to date and clean, and everyone was friendly and helpful. I would not hesitate to return if ever needed and highly recommend SRI to anyone. Thanks, SRI, for making part of my recovery journey so enjoyable!
Hi Lori, it's so great to read about your experience. Thanks for the shout out! - Social Care Team
Negative experience: I had the misfortune to be a patient at SRI for as a recovering spinal fusion patient for 8 days in June, 2021. I am 78 years old and a practicing Gynecological Plastic Surgeon. I was treated as a brainless child, restricted to my bed with no physical activity whatsoever other that OT and PT for 1 hour each daily, except for Saturday and Sundays when I was confined mostly to bed all day. I had to ring the bell to get out of and into bed, and if I got up out of a chair without assistance a loud buzzer would go off. Nursing care was algorithmic and perfunctory, and riddled with mistakes. Necessary medications were forgotten, and medications written for a one-time event were continued unnecessarily ad infinitum. Thank God I am a physician, and reviewed my daily meds before I took them; I can only guess about the medication errors repeated daily for less medically sophisticated patients. Medical care also was algorithmic and a joke. The putative Medical Director, a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician, offered no personalized care, would write orders on the EMR, then chronically neglect to stop them when no longer necessary. A jolly internal medicine physician made 30 second rounds daily, making a show of listening to my chest , saying I was fine, and quickly departing. When I threatened to sign out "AMA," after being told that the facility planned to keep me 5 full days after I should have been discharged, suddenly arrangements were made and I was instructed in home care. Interestingly, some of the instructions I received from The OT (Occupational Therapist) assigned to me was the opposite of what I had been instructed by my spine surgeon. Also disturbing was the fact that my spine surgeon (a "star" of the Sutter Neuroscience Department) 100% absented himself from my care, never making rounds or communicating with me after surgery (Abandonment, anyone..??) The facility wanted me to stay for another "therapy-less" Saturday and Sunday (plus 3 additional days), most likely because the census was down, and Sutter needed to increase its income through lean times (This is nick-named "thrashing," a way to gain more insurance payments; Sutter is well known for this, and has been "dinged" by the State Department of Health...,) I would give only one star, given because they managed not to kill me; I give 2 stars because of occasional humanity and good care from a particular Certified Nursing Aide, and one (only one!) nurse. This facility provided "cookbook" care. The only shining light was its Physical Therapy Department (5 stars) and, generally its Occupational Therapy personnel (4 stars.) But then, I could have gotten this through home care... --Michael P Goodman, MD Davis, CA ***I am adding to my review here at a later time, as I saw the bogus comment from the "Quality Control" guy. I DID contact them; I got a perfunctory response with a promise (unkept!) to call me back. I have little good to say about both the Sutter system, Sutter General, and especially Sutter Acute Care. As I mentioned, I am a practicing clinician. I have practiced in several hospitals including Sutter facilities, Dignity facilities, Kaiser, and smaller community hospitals. Between my surgeon (George Pacetti, MD) abandoning me to assistants not savvy as to my surgery and post-op situation, the below-standard-of-practice medical and nursing care received, and unskilled and uncaring physicians in Acute Rehab, I never plan to be a patient at Sutter again. Stay away from Pacetti, Sutter General, and especially Sutter Acute Rehab!
We take these claims seriously and encourage you to contact the Quality team. They can address your concerns and can be reached at (916) 781-1230. We value your feedback and hope you consider our support. Hugo, Social Care Team

Fantastic experience: Following 2 weeks at Sutter Rehab Roseville to recover from my cracked hip and pelvis, I am recovered and fully mobile again. Thanks to the professional team of Sutter physical and occupational therapists’ kind encouragement!
We're so happy to hear about your great experience, Kent. Thanks so much for sharing, the team is going to love reading this! - Social Care Team
Fantastic experience: my oldest son is receiving rehab here after being hit by a car and I can't say how much we appreciate everybody in this place
It's so great to read about your experience. Thanks for the shout out! - Social Care Team
Fantastic experience: Wonderful facility and phenomenal staff. Spacious, clean, organized, professional. Lovely courtyard, with fountain, vending machines a lots of room for privacy when visiting with family. The parking can be a bit tricky, especially for big trucks, but there a few spots that when open, are perfect.
Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave such a great review and rating. Have a great day! - Social Care Team
Negative experience: Rehab staff is great. Admin people not so much. Very little help, don't believe what they say about results, etc. In 2 days they determined when my mother would leave. We were told she would be walking, taking care of herself, etc at that point. Not even close. We're taking her to another facility since we were basically kicked out. 14 days and you're done regardless of where you're at. Pitiful. Rehab peeps get 5 stars. Case management people get 0.
Hi, Rob. We want everyone to have a positive experience from start to finish, and we're sorry to learn we missed the mark. If there's anything you'd like to talk about in more detail, please contact our Patient Resource Center at (916) 731-5406. Best wishes - Laura, Social Care Team
Fantastic experience: I agree that it's hard for patients to remain in the wheelchairs during most of their stay but they have good reasons. My husband stayed here for his last part of his inpatient rehabilitation and we loved it. The nurses always treated us nicely and with respect and friendliness. My husband suffers an Anoxic Brain Injury but doesn't have anger issues etc. like other brain injury survivors. He just wanted help to recover as much as he could. He was pleased with the experience too. The food was pretty darned good too. Although they only serve decaf coffee, the meal times were pleasant. I was especially pleased with the therapy staff there. We worked with some wonderful people who really worked him hard to improve. We go back once a month for a support group and always make time to stop in there therapy room to see some of our favorites. These are the people who most know what it's like to be in a caretakers shoes. Sometimes it's elation I feel at seeing them and sometimes it's like a dam has broken and I just need a hug. They are happy to do that too. If you are looking for a place for your loved one to recover from a Brain Injury, Stroke, Back Injury, etc. look no further than SRI.
Such a beautiful, yet bittersweet, story Vicki. Thank you for sharing, and we're wishing you all the best. - Social Care Team

Positive experience: One of my major issues with rehab (not this place in particular but since I was there I thought I would post here) is with the restriction to a wheelchair. While a wheelchair can be a wonderful assist, it became a contribution to my lack of progress. The staff was more concerned with a lawsuit from me falling than the detriment it was causing. I went from no walking privileges to being released and caring completely for myself from doing laundry, cooking and showering. Come on. Is that "transition"?. No. One therapist did come and said out of the blue, let's walk to the gym. The looks on the faces of all the nurses as I strolled by the station was priceless. So aghast at seeing me independently walk. Yet, although I did not only fine but excellent, back to the wheelchair and the ball and chain it became. Someone should do a study on when a wheelchair no longer becomes a life assist but a life detriment.
Negative experience: When they want your loved one in a SNF first before going there, red flag. From personal family experience, rehab doesn't come from an SNF. People atrophy there. Early rehabilitation after the majority of traumas improves not only physical outcome but also cognitive and functional outcome.
Dear K, we're sorry to hear your family member is going through a difficult time. While our team can't speak to clinical decisions or treatment plans, we'd be happy to help connect you to the right team so you can discuss your concerns. If you're interested, private message us and we'd be happy to share next steps. Best, Jason Sutter Social Care Team
Positive experience: My review of the Therapy that was received by the actual PT and OT staff is a 7 out of 5 stars amazing team and “Boot Camp” to give you the confidence you need to make the recovery you deserve. They ran me thru the gauntlet to to regain my ability to walk again and confidence that my new disability was not going to be my life’s story. They were the reason I went to SRI and they were worth all the hype and accolades they were given before hand. But I was lucky and my injury didn’t effect my speech or cognitive thinking so in lieu of the hour of speech therapy I was pond off to what seemed like the intern staff that wasn’t given clear direction on what to do so it became a complete waste of mine and my families time. As my family stated it was my “babysitting time” to allow them to bill my insurance. My only warning is to BE CAUTIOUS of some of the physicians, the one I was assigned to should have been a patient not the doctor and was worse off than some of the stroke victims he was supposed to be caring for. All I want to say is if your loved one is being seen by this facility and there symptoms affect there cognitive mind you really need to be cautious and ask tons of questions. Due to complications from my surgery my cognitive state was being affected and I was not fully aware of it but if it wasn’t for my family and the amazing RN staff this physician would have had me back in the ICU instead of at home today. My suggestion is if there is any complication from your symptoms that got you to this facility make sure your primary doctor is coordinated with and that their orders are relayed to the RN staff. Cause when I wasn’t in my cognitive mind and my family had not intervened this SRI physician was going to change my orders back to what was causing my complications which turned out to be seizures. And all the way to the point of discharge he continued to ignore the orders from my primary neurosurgeon and continued to try and change my chart for no reason other than complete incompetence.
This is great to see, thanks so much for sharing your rating, Shawn!
Positive experience: I am grateful and thankful to have received the Best "Boot Camp" rehabilitation training with knowledge staff after having a Hemorrhagic Stroke on September 1, 2016. Before leaving SRI Physical Therapists (PT) and Occupation Therapist (OT) has helped me to add to the my Faith and confidence! I Highly Recommend Sutter Roseville Institute for your rehabilitation needs! You Won't Regret! Don't give up on yourself and begin a pity party. Make a decision to give 100% during your time with PT and OT. Your Better then Best Days Are Ahead Of You! I PROMISE!
This is so great to hear. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: I spent several weeks after a major back surgery. They took good care of me, taught me how to walk again and all of the activities of daily living. The food was decent, the staff was excellent and I enjoyed their library with the computers where I could access the internet from my wheelchair. That kept me from going crazy being cooped up and I was able to do a lot of research using their computers.
We strive to provide the best experience possible and we are so happy to hear this. Thank you for sharing your story, Cathleen!
Negative experience: Sutter's physical facility looks nice which fools everyone. UC Davis' acute rehab rooms are very basic, very very tiny but their knowledge is far greater and attitude towards patients nicer. Mercy's rehab is a bit gloomy. Their gym is very basic. At Sutter, I saw one of their physical therapists, Tony, knock a patient down twice. The patient miraculously caught himself twice! There should have been two people with that very tall man. Tony also almost knockec down another patient and twisted his arm. Again, twice. He acknowledged he should have learned after the first time but didn't. The head of physical therapy refused to change him but patient insisted. Next time I saw the patient, there were two other PTs assisting him. Another patient was sent to emergency having been knocked down by staff. Three of the occupational therapists have no idea what they were doing and wrote false reports. One had a patient throwing darts at a dartboard set up in front of people. The therapists take things personally from brain injury patients. They are very inexperienced. The head nurse tries to be a patient's best friend but in reality is trying to gather information to use against patients. She will protect her nurses against legitimate claims of patients and attack the patient's character because she is so afraid of being written up and losing her job. The patients are not there long enough but the nurses are so she needs their undying loyalty. She told one nurse to refuse critical meds to a patient she didn't like and blamed the patient. She has the staff spying on patients and listening into private conversations. The nurses get a pat on the back if they do this. There are several instances of Hipaa violations. Most of the staff have no idea that even telling another staff member who is not involved with a particular patient about that patient is a violation. The social worker, against regulations, recommended an agency for home healthcare that overcharges and is more interested in converting patients to Jesus than caring about the patient's health requirements on earth. The social worker was appalled at the behavior of the head of the facility who didn't like being an occupational therapist which is his background, wanted to make a lot of money, so convinced Sutter to do this facility and is under pressure to make a lot of money. Most of the nurses do not care about the patient, do not know how to administer drugs or draw blood properly, take things personally even from brain injury patients, and have aggressive, disrespectful attitudes. There are two who are very good,, sincerely care about their patients, and work hard but are under-appreciated. All the nurses work 12 hour shifts which is too long to be competent for 1/3rd of it at least. None of them like the administration. Three of the nurse assistants are very good. The neuropsychologist is cold and incompetent. A check into his background shows mediocrity. It took Sutter years to find a head doctor, no one of good quality wanted the job. The one they found is not a leader, very reactive, misses important issues on routine physical exams, thinks everyone in the Sacramento area is a racist and a check into her background shows mediocrity and patient dislike. This mediocrity shows.
