Dr. Koester was always punctual and professional when seeing me. He never made me wait long in the examining room, and was always polite and caring.
Dr. Dowdle was very friendly and didn't make me wait. He was straightforward, which was very refreshing. Honestly, he couldn't have done more, but he told me I should see another doctor, which I was happy to do.

Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine: Reviews
Positive experience: The actual surgery went well. 4 or 5 stars. Bedside manner? 3 stars tops. Scheduling is such a hassle. Zero stars. Their automated message says 'due to unusual volume of calls' there is a long wait time. If your automated system says that all day every day, then it isn't unusual. And while you wait automated messages are nonstop and one recorded message cuts into one that was already playing. This is all terrible. This is the 3rd time Slocum has canceled my appointment and feels like I bear the pain of having to reschedule. I cannot wait to be done with them.
Negative experience: Had surgery march 19 and it's been 7 month and I'm still in extreme pain. I was given 6 percocets for a double carpal tunnel surgery it's been 7 months and I am still in extreme pain just in my right wrist I can't even move my fingers at all I wish I would have never got to surgery please consider a lifelong injury if you get the surgery done here. Nobody told me what to expect as far as recovery . They told me NO PAIN MEDS SO ON MY WAY HOME I GOT A COUPLE BOTTLES OF liquor to deal with the pain three days later I got a text message from my Pharmacy that there was six Percocets for me to pick up this really blew my mind because I was told there was no pain meds so I thought it was just an inhaler to pick up a week later I went to the pharmacy and they said it was six Percocets? Is it normal to get (6) 5 mg perocets for a double surgery? Where did the rest the pills go and why did I get told there is no pain meds just seemed like I was pushed out the door after and told nothing I'm still in extreme pain and can't work 7 months later I was denied any money for a disability I lost mu job already and have no help
Negative experience: I have been a patient since 2014 but I will never be one again. Back then, Slocum seemed to care about their patients. My most recent experiences have proven to me they are only interested in making money and do not care about their patients’ experiences. I have many active friends who break bones and mess up joints often and I will do everything in my power to help them avoid Slocum. In fact, a friend broke his wrist mountain biking this weekend. He was referred to Slocum and he asked for a referral elsewhere bc he has watched what I have gone through with Slocum as well as what another mutual friend who injured his ankle has gone through. Except for the physical therapy department, I feel like ALL the staff working there need to work on their customer service skills and quit treating people like numbers. It seems Slocum has so much business, they don’t care about patients experiences with them. Especially when it comes to wait times. Nor do they care if patients get upset and leave as I witnessed two patients do this on recent visits. Worse yet, the staff’s attitudes and comments after the patients left were childish and unprofessional. I was told (not asked) to check in 15 minutes early for my appointment only to get there and be told to have a seat and they’d call me when I could check in. 35 minutes later, I was able to finally check in I had to ask if they were running behind and was told “just a few minutes.” Then I waited 56 minutes to be called back into a room and another 24 before the doctor came in. There was no staff acknowledgment for the long wait nor an apology or even a thank you for being patient with them for making me wait. There was absolutely no consideration for my time despite the fact that I had to cancel three appointments with my clients. There was no way I was going to cancel my appointment after waiting two months to be seen so I had no choice but to inconvenience three other families. My experience after surgery was even worse: Dr. Tuman had prescribed two meds after my total knee replacement that I’m allergic to and that were on my allergy list as well as the bracelet they make you wear for surgery (one med causes anaphylaxis and the other a dystonic reaction so NOT minor allergies). I went the entire night in the hospital without needed meds for swelling (which the swelling causes more pain) and Tuman’s response: “well to be fair, I did prescribe something, you were just allergic to it.” I was too shocked and in too much pain to call him out on his lack of accountability and apathetic response but what I should have said: It isn’t about being fair to you doctor, it is supposed to be about your patient’s pain being managed after a major surgery! It isn’t about making them wait 9 hours for you to do your rounds and finally prescribe something they are not allergic to you robotic ass! I also reminded EVERYONE including Dr. Tuman the day of surgery not to use glue when closing me up because on my first knee replacement the glue caused my skin to become inflamed, itch and burn. He did not listen to me and used glue anyway and my skin reacted terribly by swelling, blistering, and reopening the wound. What I went through post operatively was so unnecessary. Not only was it painful, it slowed my healing and progress in PT down significantly. The pain and swelling was so bad I couldn’t bend my knee without blisters popping. I took the time to write this in hopes of encouraging you to make some major changes in your practice. Please take the time to respect and LISTEN to your patients. It also wouldn’t hurt to remind yourselves that you can’t run a successful practice without patients. Treat them right!!
Negative experience: I had an horrible experience at Slocum. Originally saw Dr Koester. Then had an MRI and spoke with him on the phone. He said he was referring me to another doctor at Slocum, Dr. Dowdle, but that the surgery was ‘straight forward.’ Went to my appointment with Dr Dowdle , only to have him tell me he will not perform the surgery, and that I am being referred to OHSU. So why did I have to go to the 3rd visit? So they could collect another $100??? Seems something Dr Koester could have told me. But no, I got to waste part of my day for Dr Dowdle to show up 25 minutes past our appointment time (they had me show up 20 minutes prior to that, just to sit and wait for him another 25 minutes) Wow. Mary, Dr Dowdle’s nurse has a cold, uninformed bedside manner, I couldn’t wait to get out of there! So for $300+ (after insurance, who knows how much they got) Slocum told me ‘go somewhere else’. Wow. Save your money, go anywhere else!! OSHU anyone??
Fantastic experience: Broke my wrist just before labor day and on my first appointment they put a cast on my wrist. This last appointment was three weeks later where my cast was removed. Dr. TREK was very good with his explanation of what was to be expected. This was my first broken bone and I'm 61. Overall experience exceed my expectations. I hope I don't have to return here but if needed this will be my go to for any future Orthopedic needs. I
Negative experience: I am leaving this review of my recent Slocum surgery so that others may not fall into the pitfalls that I did while expecting Slocum to be looking out for my interests. Just after the sleepy was added to my IV and I was relaxing (and my surgeon was standing right there) they asked If I wanted the dandy nerve block. Not knowing just what it was I and feeling compliant I said yes. Then instantly a guy appeared from behind and gave the injection. Later on I dearly regretted this. The operation was to remove a tumor of the hand. About a week later I noticed what felt like a bulb in my armpit. I soon squeezed it by moving my arm back and I felt it squirt out followed by searing pain across my chest that felt like I might die from it. Then the brace that they put on my hand was a sourse of more severe pain from pressing on my wrist bone. Had to go in to change it. Then when that brace was removed and I met with all the happy crew I was told about the optional brace which I suckered for which was useless and acually damaging. Later finding out it was not covered and cost $350 some dollars. I complained to deaf ears. So I waited until it was turned over to collections until I paid.
Negative experience: Something as simple as getting a copy of your own MRI and report takes days and days and multiple phone calls. There is poor follow up and an awful system. We were told “as soon as your doctor ‘signs off’ on your MRI report we can release it. The doctor was out of town and literally did not know how to sign off in the system properly so the report could not be released. I still don’t have it after 5 days waiting and needing a second opinion and an operation that should have been done yesterday. This is inexcusable and takes away from the actual quality care given by the doctors. Administrative overhaul greatly needed. What a mess!
Fantastic experience: I had three joint replacements and everything went well. I saw people here complaining about congestion and delay in the practice, which was not my experience, despite high number of patients
Negative experience: Waste of time for them to money grab. I had X-rays done at a clinic that then ordered an MRI through Slocum whom had to wait to schedule me until they got the images and notes. That was done, I went to my appointment where they then took the same X-rays and ordered an mri. So to get an appointment with slocum I had to get X-rays and an mri ordered and a referral but then have to do the exact same thing 2 weeks later when slocum could finally see me. Here I am 3 weeks from injury without being any closer to getting any answers or help. Staff didn’t seem to care either.
Negative experience: Bad consultation visit. I had to come in for a surgery to be done on my arm for getting the ulnar nerve relocated in my are because where it's at, I'm pinching it. All the staff could do was try to talk me into not getting surgery done, telling me that if they do surgery it may make my arm worse, I'm going to have more pain after the surgery and I understand that. It's like they were trying to pull a tactic to scare me on why i wouldn't want this surgery done. Also I've never had a health facility tell me I have to call my own insurance to get a prior authorization done. Isn't it the Dr's office is who sends a letter to your insurance to see if they can use my insurance. I had to call my insurance and tell them this so I could figure out what to do. My neurologist who put the referral in to slocum had to run the paper work for my insurance for slocum and fax it to them all because slocum orthopedics was lazy. I think it's a another tactic they pull to try not to take more patients. I think I might have to look at going to OHSU for surgery instead or slocum.
Negative experience: Great docs, especially Kiester. Billing department reps are another story. I called to let them know they are sending someone else’s bill to my house and the lady asked me to open it to see what it was, uh NO! Then proceed to interrupt me the entire conversation, I gave up and hung up on her. I guess you’ll figure out why this patient won’t pay their bill eventually. Ugh!
Positive experience: I felt like the provider I saw did not care about relevant medical history. I left the appointment feeling like I wasted everyone's time, especially my own. I brought a family member here, and that appointment was much better. That provider seemed to care, and their staff were friendly, which is why this review kept three stars. Overall your experience here will vary, depending on who you're here to see. Also when I came to my appointment I was confused on where to go. I'd never been here prior, and when you make an appointment they do not tell you what floor your appointment is on. This place is large and busy but they do have an information desk where you can ask questions.
Negative experience: I broke my wrist June 1. Slocum's first appointment for me was June 10 and again on July 12. I did not get to see a doctor either visit.. X-rays were done both times. Then on August 5 the doctor examined me. The appointment was very limited. She told me if my wrist still hurt in 3 months to make another appointment and to cancel my last 2 therapies. I did this. The doctors appointment left me feeling I was on my own and that the doctor had very little interest in my case. Her visit was extremely short and seemed uncaring. Wondering if it was my older age or the fact I have UnitedHealthcare Advantage and really not worth her time.
Negative experience: They made my brother wait over four months to get surgery on his broken collarbone. Not sure what kind of game these guys are playing.
Fantastic experience: Seen Dr Lyons had a great experience. He Listened to everything I needed. Explained everything that's going to happen in great detail. This injury is pretty bad.
Negative experience: Terry in the billing department was not helpful what so ever. I canceled an appointment ahead of time and respectfully requested for her to please wave a $25 fee that was due to my phone call not being prior to 24 hours. Terry lied to me on the phone telling me she didn’t have the authority to wave the fee. She is the supervisor and absolutely does have the authority. I found this beyond unprofessional to outright tell such a lie. Furthermore, had their physical therapy department been comfortable and professional I wouldn’t have canceled. However, it wasn’t. Not only was it MASSIVELY overcrowded , but the second appointment (the one I called and canceled) was scheduled with a DIFFERENT physical therapist!!! This also was not communicated to me that I would have different therapists treating my right knee after the surgery. Makes zero sense. I give Terry and her PT department one star. On the flip side. The surgeons and his people were great. Very professional and seemed to do a good job. Although, my knee is currently making a popping/clicking noise even after more than 2 full months of healing and PT at Cascade Health (who I rate at 5 stars!) My advice. Surgery is fine but the after care is horrible. Make sure you don’t follow up care with Slocum. Very unprofessional, especially Terry in the billing department. Not understanding whatsoever. She demanded I pay the $25 dollars without concern for my financial situation. Keep in mind Slocum is a multimillion dollar business. Terry should be ashamed of herself.
Fantastic experience: My teenage daughter had a shoulder labral repair and the staff is amazing here! The nurses took very good care of her and treated her very well. It seems Dr.Hoellrich did a fantastic job fixing my her shoulder up and getting her back to playing sports, he was very informative and caring. He answered all of our questions and checked on my daughter in recovery before she was discharged for home. Everyone there was very nice. The building is wonderful, bright, and clean. It was kind of confusing at first, figuring out where to go exactly, but there’s plenty of staff around that are very nice and will point you in the right direction. Hopefully none of my family or myself will need another surgery in the future, but I would strongly recommend going here if you need to!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Bear and the staff are very nice and polite with great bedside matter.
Negative experience: Too bad I cannot give a "Minus" on this place. I was treated like a drug addict when I came with hip pain 6 months after a replacement (done in California). I was told "Everything looks fine" then after my continued complaints I heard, "I think you have a drug problem" and "it is possible the pain is in your mind" making me out to be a liar. However, after seeking help with Rebound Orthopedics in Vancouver, Washington it was found I had a loose socket and prosthetic post. I was not lying, I was not seeking medication for a non-existent pain, and it was not in my mind. Avoid Slocum Orthopedics the Pacific Northwest's segment of hell on Earth!
Fantastic experience: I had knee surgery on the 27th of March 2024. While I was nervous about it, I am very impressed and happy with the results!! I did my physical therapy at Slocum, again I was totally blown away with the quality of care I received!!! If you are in need of this procedure then Slocum is the best option for You!!!
Negative experience: Zero Stars. The WORST medical experience I've ever had from start to finish. It's awful that this is the only game in town when it comes to ortho care. This is what happens when you have a monopoly in an industry. I've been making monthly payments on my procedure and still get confusing invoices. They don't send you statements that show what you've paid so I have to call every time and then they can't tell you straight away - time consuming. Again. Awful all the way around.
Fantastic experience: Saw Dr Trek Lyons today. Absolutely incredible. He took tons of time, described my issues at length, and personalized my regimen. I’m blown away by how thoughtful he was and truly concerned. Just the best care I could have ever hoped to receive. I wish all doctors had this level of care and concern for their patients. Fantastic!
Positive experience: Mike at the shop is super helpful!! Dr. Tuman and PA Queer amazing!! Scheduling…different story. Called to ask about my son’s post opp appointment on 6/27. They said it was never scheduled though they called me to do so on 6/6 or 6/7. Today is 6/25. They said they could get me in tomorrow (6/26). I took it. I just got a text saying his appointment is for 6/27….I called to again, inquire…”not sure why they would schedule you for tomorrow (6/26), they are in surgery”…so now I’m back to the original date…
Fantastic experience: I had a total hip replacement surgery done in April 2024 by Dr Korcek at MeKenzie Willamette Medical Center. The surgery was flawless and the hospital was amazing in their care when I didn’t pass physical therapy and had an unexpected stay. My Chiropractor kept commenting on how my leg length was exactly right and that he was impressed with my surgeon’s ability. I can’t say enough for the hospital and Dr Korcek’s superb care.
Negative experience: My experience seeing Dr. D for a severe, complex knee injury was appallingly bad. He tried to send me to PT for two months and return. I'll never set foot in Slocum again. He didn't even have the MRI and x-ray reports in his hands and looked surprised when I asked him about the ACL tear. He wasted my valuable time w/a 2 hour round trip drive, time off work, and paying him for nothing.
Negative experience: If your paperwork and phone messages say "7-10 days" for processing and then call to check, get told "well it's actually 10-14 days"' AND you have to pay for the privelege of "competitive form completion", a fee per form, you're not doing anything but delaying already hurting people. Staff is rude to boot.
Negative experience: Shockingly bad service borderline neglectful. Wrong scripts, wrong insurance, scheduling pre op five days after post op, sending oxy to pharmacy when told specifically not to, said they were operating on a shoulder not a knee, constantly didn’t call or communicate after told they would follow up within “a few days” and not even sending a pre-op email to let us know what to eat or not to eat and when to stop drinking, etc. what a disaster. As with others, surgeons are fine, nurses and admin seriously don’t care or maybe prioritize only UO athletes? They aren’t BBB accredited either. Yikes.
Negative experience: When I first contacted Slocum they were scheduling 3 months out, but my knee was stable at the time so it wasn't a big deal. What I found is that that if you couldn't make an appointment they'd schedule you an additional 1-2 months out. Later on, about 5 months after I had initially tried to schedule an appointment I had an injury which caused loose bodies in my knee to break down cartilage, damage soft connective tissue, and cause high grade chondromalacia of the patella. When I finally got an MRI and was able to speak with the surgeon, Dr. Tuman, assured me that removing the loose bodies was the only corrective action necessary and I'd be able to return to all my hobbies and sports pain free within 2 months of the arthroscopic surgery. He did not review my MRI with me, and he did not tell me I had a high grade chondromalacia and severe cartilage degradation of the lateral femoral chondyle. I trusted his professional opinion, perhaps because it was what I wanted to hear as young active individual. I'm currently 6 months post op from an arthroscopy that took no more than 30 minutes and I'm suffering immensely. The CP makes stairs excruciating, nevermind hiking with any decent elevation change. The chondrosis in my lateral knee is preventing my quads from firing and building strength so the hundred plus hours I've put into physical therapy and rehabilitation has been largely non fruit bearing. The simple arthroscopy solved the loose body issue but it hasn't even come close to solving a litany of other problems I have and now it feels like I don't have a leg to stand on. I've been seeking additional help from Slocum since February and the best they can do is May I guess. Well if I can't make that appointment it's going to be July!?!? I am only slightly better off than I was before surgery and that is with 100+ hours of hard PT, never working through pain but certainly putting up with a lot of discomfort. As an aside I had a scope done a few years back on my other knee for loose body removal at Andrews institute in Gulf Breeze, FL. The surgeon was prepared to take additional measures to fix the chondrosis if needed but fortunately it wasn't necessary. I recovered from that surgery in less than a month, the scars from the arthroscopic portals were less than half the size than the ones Dr Tuman left me with, even though the loose body they removed was significantly larger. My final impression of SLOCUM is that they just don't care about my suffering. The surgeon wanted a quick and easy procedure, perhaps as a "warm up" because I was the first surgery of the day. I will not recommend this establishment to anybody and I advise that everybody steer clear of this place
Negative experience: I was Ava referral sent to Slocum. After 4 trips to Eugene, they couldn't get my phone numbers straight so they couldn't get ahold of me. So then, they got an attitude and they said there was nothing wrong with my hand when I know I've got a broken forefinger. I'm a musician and I need my hand to play my guitar. I can't play my guitar when I can't hold a pic. Cause my fingers broke but these people say there's nothing wrong with my hand so I went somewhere else. So I want just let you know. These people are lacks. They don't answer their phone. You sit on hold for at least a 1/2 hour or better. Every time they won't, they won't answer your questions if you raise your voice to him or if you're a man and you're talk in your man. Voice that hangs up on you. Real professional people. I highly do not recommend this place. I think they should be shut down for. Is a male practice
Negative experience: SOME of the providers are nice people. They are absolutely incapable of keeping appointments though. Twice now I've gotten calls, on the morning of my appointment, to reschedule. The check in system is asinine and some of the folks in reception sure seem like they don't want to be there. The surgeon made me feel like I was wasting her time. The physical therapists and medical assistants are the only bright spot here and the only reason I'm giving them anything more than a mediocre review at best. Shoutout to Paul! He's an amazing person and the only reason I'm still using this provider. Also please double check to make sure they actually take your insurance. The first provider I saw was in network but the therapists ARE NOT and now I've got a ridiculous bill! You guys are ABSOLUTE CROOKS
Fantastic experience: Dr Mildren is an excellent surgeon. I had an Arthroscopy this morning and have had previous surgeries at Slocum. The nurses are all very kind and gentle. My surgeries were completed without complication. I will eventually need a total knee replacement and have complete confidence in Dr Mildren’s surgery skills.
Positive experience: Doctor MIchael Koester was great, Whoever answered the phone in the MRI department at 9 ish am this morning obviously hates her job and should not be working with patients with the attitude she has. Almost decided to see a different Orthopedic doctor in Medford just for the MRI because of how rude, defensive, and aggressive she is. I remember the 1st time I ever got a MRI from here my mom complained to someone about how rude the lady is in the MRI department, since she basically screamed at my mom. The person she complained to said that they always are rude to patients. I’m not sure if it’s the same person but the attitude definitely matched.
Negative experience: I just walked out of an appointment I waited 2 months for with Brick Lantz. He was rude and condescending. I don’t allow other people to speak to me that way. You shouldn’t either. I strongly encourage you to seek care elsewhere.
Negative experience: Never accept any type of brace from there. They charged us $787 for a brace we did not know we can get online for $60. I hate that they manipulate your trust, just for their capitalistic greed. As if we aren't all struggling enough with medical bills. No price tag, no awareness, no returns. It's garbage in a few weeks, when you no longer need it. Disgraceful. Shame on you Slocum! Medical surgery shouldn't have to deteriorate your mental health. Errg!!!
Fantastic experience: I continue to be treated extremely well by the staff at Slocum, most importantly, Dr Shah. He has replaced my right knee, continues his care of my left knee with diagnosis and treatment (cortisone) Additionally, I have had successfully completed rehabilitation/PT after cervical fusion. Highly recommended, professionally managed establishment. My wife has also had two successful bunion surgeries with Dr Jackson.
Fantastic experience: I would recommend this place to ANYONE! They are absolutely amazing!! My wife needed surgery on her arm, so we came from out of town. Dr. Sheerin and his Assistant Stephanie were absolutely incredible. There are no other words to describe how wonderful they are. We are so thankful for you both and the rest of the medical team there.
Positive experience: My fiancee was in a motorcycle accident & the Slocum Center is the 1 doing his surgeries and follow-ups. Although the scheduling department made a huge mistake with his last appointment, it was supposed to be on Monday the 14th @ 4:30 but apparently the Doctors are always in surgery on Mondays. They said that no he is scheduled for Thursday the 17th. But they didn't want to take responsibility for the mix up. Even though they clearly said the 14th. But... It's not the Doctors fault scheduling mess up. It's a great place. The Doctors a good & seem like they care. Just a major inconvenience as we live OVER AN HOUR AWAY.
Negative experience: I got sent to this company for a referral. I feel like the doctor I seen for my foot treated me like I was wasting her time. She made me feel like I was an inconvenience to her. She mostly disagreed with what I was told. She was really aggressive with my foot. She did agree my tendon is spilt, but treated and talked to me very poorly. I wouldn't recommend her to my worst nightmare.
Fantastic experience: He totally explained my condition, treatment option and made me feel less anxiety. I then did agree to surgery. I am so grateful that I trusted him. The low level pain post surgery was LESS than the pain Pre surgery!
Negative experience: Not so sure going here was a good idea I should have gone to the orthopedics in Medford instead. So far I think my surgeon was good I hope but everything else was a joke. After my surgery was over I was sent home and shortly after I got there I started having severe breathing problems where I can only take a half of a breath. I was starting to feel like I was suffocating. I called the number for urgent concerns and was told that maybe I should go to the ER. After being in the ER all night I was told I had a collapsed lung. Luckily after a couple days and breathing exercises it corrected it's self. I called Slocum to let them know what happened and they didn't seem to want to be bothered with it. Apparently a collapsed lung is not that big of a deal and was told it was unlikely it was from anything involving my surgery. I thought that to be strange being that I'm a pretty healthy guy. Fast forward a couple of weeks and my splint is completely falling apart and is totally useless. So again I called that number to get some info on what I should do about this and the on call doctor was unable to give me any advice on what I should do. She seemed completely lost (incompetent). I am so hoping that my surgeon did a good job because so far nobody else there had. Honestly I'm pretty worried and I'm in way more pain than I was with the initial injury. Based on my expenses so far I absolutely would not recommend this place to anybody.
Negative experience: After a catastrophic accident and four hip replacement / revision surgeries in seven months between 12/21-7/22, it seems I’m considered a difficult patient. Evidently my situation is too much for the surgeons here to handle, so I need to go elsewhere. Since October 2023, it has been impossible to communicate with my surgeon Mark Mildren, his assistant Lacy, and the referral supervisor Brittany. It took months to get an appointment, when I finally had a face to face with my surgeon, he made big promises to help me and didn’t follow through. I made six follow up phone calls, was told three times my referrals would be done by end of business, left three voice messages for Brittany and someone (a triage nurse covering phones) sent an email to Brittany on my behalf to ask for her help, but she never called me back. Lacy made one call to let me know referral would be done that day and wasn’t done till a week later. It’s unbelievable. When I was disabled and lost my job, I lost my good insurance. Now on OHP, it seems I’ve been dismissed. If you’re a “check all the boxes” patient, these surgeons are great. They’ll fix you up and send you on your way. As a complex patient when nobody knows what to do next, you’ll be on your own. I’m giving two stars for Lisa, the one person on the phone tree whose compassion and indignation about my situation carried over every time she answered my call. Thank you Lisa.
Fantastic experience: I saw Lucas Korcek for a total hip. I had been in excruciating pain for 2 years. Within two weeks post op my joint pain was gone. He is a brilliant surgeon whom I highly recommend. The nursing staff especially my nurse Tony was top tier. I feel extremely grateful. I would give them 10 stars if I could!
Negative experience: Waited an hour to be seen. They called everyone else in even people that came in after me. Last appointment was canceled cause they didn’t have a translator even tho I told them I could speak English. They personally made me feel like it was a discrimination problem.
Negative experience: I have been going to slocum about 2/3 of my life. Every year I go there things seem to get worse. I recently changed physicians due to my previous doctor at slocum having a significant complication during my grandma’s surgery that he never addressed and lied about the outcome. In switching physicians I describe my experience as the jiffy lube experience because they see you for about 2 minutes hardly talk to you. Make you feel dumb. And then they are gone. My surgery went well and the nursing staff in the surgery center was absolutely amazing. I don’t have words for just how great they are. But during my follow up appointment my doctor asked me to perform tasks in the visit that were weeks away in my protocol for recovery and seemed beyond irritated when I could not walk without a brace or crutch across the room 2 weeks after knee reconstruction. Now I received a bill for the brace used after surgery. The original cost…over $1000. After insurance….$600. They stated when I called about the bill that I signed something agreeing to the cost. Perhaps I did. I tried really hard to read everything I signed over the months leading up to surgery. I may have missed it. They told me they don’t make a profit off of these devices and that it’s just the cost of the item…there is just no way. When looking up the item online after getting the bill…it’s sold on Amazon for $99. When I called to speak to the billing office and speak to a supervisor I was disgusted at the treatment. I spoke to someone who said her name was Kaitlyn. Not sure how she spells it. The attitude from the start was appalling. I was calm and was careful to use professional language throughout the conversation as I’ve been in customer service management and in no way was I wanting to be disrespectful or mean. I know she has nothing to do with the prices and it’s the large company that has the monopoly in Eugene orthopedics. She was belittling and spoke over me several times. You are dealing with patients. People you are going through a medical procedure and you speak to them like they are stupid and a number in a long list of obligations. I don’t know what the solution is here. If you live in Eugene you have no choice but to go to slocum. I just hope one day they realize they are working with actual humans because the cold feeling you get when you interact with literally anyone but the surgery center nurses is enough to make a person suffer through the physical pain just to avoid the mental and emotional pain of dealing with this company.
Fantastic experience: I had a total knee replacement with Dr. Jewett on 8-9-23. I have been an RN for 43 years, and half of my career has been spent in the Surgery Department. That being said, if you need knee surgery, this is your surgeon! Riverbend Hospital was great! The staff there was great! My anesthesia provider, Dr. Michael Moore was INCREDIBLE!!!! I was up and walking 2 hours after surgery. I went home 5 hours after surgery. My post-surgical outcome is perfect! But I knew it would be because Dr. Jewett had already performed perfect surgery on my father and on a family friend years before I needed my surgery. I am looking forward to getting my 2nd knee done the exact same way that my new knee was done. My mobility is restored, and I'm back to work this week as a surgical RN!
Fantastic experience: First time ever meeting Doctor Jewett, really like him. Looking forward to working with him and SLOCUM!! He is the man!! Just had my hips replaced. First surgery May 4th, 2022, and second Dec 4th, 2022, excellent care and extremely happy. Dr. Jewett is A+ I know at least 20 other people that have used Dr. Jewett and they are all extremely happy. Thank you Dr. Jewett and Slocum!!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Koester is amazing and has seen me for all sorts of rugby injuries over time. Appointments are always efficient and fast paced with him knowing history of injuries and well prepared
Negative experience: I called to become a new patient about one month ago. I need basal thumb surgery confirmed by my doctor. Was told they would send for my medical records. I've heard nothing from them. I've called a couple of times to see where I'm at in the process, but only get voice mail and no return call.
Fantastic experience: Excellent. Knee replacement was uneventful. Dr. Jewett and team at Slocum/Riverbend have been doing this a long time and know exactly what they are doing. 7 weeks into it I’m back to mostly normal although Dr. Jewett cautions it will take another 9 months to fully heal/ integrate into my body. But your activities resume quickly. Oh and I had close to no pain!
Fantastic experience: Just got my knee injections about 10 minutes ago. Doctor Mohler is one of the best doctors that I have ever been to (I see many doctors, regularly). He's very patient, extremely knowledgeable and has a terrific bedside manner . I highly recommend him
Negative experience: 100 percent do not recommended. We received a phone call from Slocum a couple of weeks ago saying THEY sent the surgery release letter to the wrong doctor and we needed to call OMG to get it fixed or surgery wouldn't happen, um your mistake you fix it. But then today 6/13 my husband had his pre op appointment for his total hip replacement on 6/22 where the doctor tells him his hip is almost collapsed. We received a call saying a code was messed up and needed to be resent to insurance and they bumped his surgery to 6/29. Okay irritating but doable but then this women proceeded to say if we don't get the paperwork back from insurance by 6/27 we have to bump you until SEPTEMBER. For their mistake, this has been scheduled since FEBRUARY!! I am seething mad at this point and no one at Slocum will answer the phone to get me any information I need for the insurance company. If you are having surgery make sure you follow up and do their jobs or you and your family member will have to suffer and wait longer for a surgery that you have been waiting years for.
Negative experience: I was just a young adult when I first went to slocum for pain in my feet and I didn't know I could speak up at the time about my experience there. The doctor walked in, barely acknowledge me, touched my foot, told me it’s not plantar fasciitis and walked out. Then they “prescribed” expensive inserts that made the pain worse. Terrible experience, 1 star, taught me to advocate for my health, time, and money though so thanks for that.
Negative experience: The surgeons themselves are too notch but… Slocum leaves a lot to be desired. They over schedule and there is no parking, they keep you waiting an hour or more then the doctor hasn’t even reviewed your chart and they often “lose” scheduled appointments and fail to return calls to surgery patients
Fantastic experience: Dr Spencer Dowdle has been my hip Dr since 2020. He's never been anything but kind pleasant and thorough thus far. My kitty of 15 yrs died just a couple weeks before my first appointment and I had been crying as he entered the room. He was very compassionate and concerned for my feelings. He even took the time to look at a picture of her. Honestly i look forward to our appointments. He wants you to understand what your up against and reassures you that he's in your corner. I have a hip deformity and since i am so young we've tried pushing this surgery out as far as possible. I will have bolth of my hips replaced by this time next year. I feel very confident and comfortable with Dr Dowdle and so far I'm very pleased with his service. I find it unfair to leave low ratings especially on a Dr without reason. Ratings can really impact someone's career...Dr or, not! So low ratings need to have some sort of explanation even if it's a short one. Just my 2 cents!
Fantastic experience: Very experienced hip replacement team (Dr. Jewitt). I went home shortly after surgery. Booklet had everything I needed to know. Pre/post surgery and everything in-between. Post surgery info very comprehensive, day by day, week by week checklist. X-ray tech Ava was quick n efficient. Shared x-rays with me. Physical Therapist (Lonnie Ward) is very knowledgeable about how bodies work and had a variety of ways to strengthen my new hip and both legs. Very positive and a good listener. Worked me at my pace and was encouraging. Easy to look at.
Fantastic experience: He is an amazing doctor. I was put in a wheelchair for almost a year before I was finally referred to him. I'm 31 my life had become miserable, I was in constant pain. He did replacements on both hips, while recovery and physical therepy took a little longer for me, since I had been immobile for so long, I did fully and completely heal. My 2nd surgery was May 9th I got married on a beach june 10th with no crutches in sight. Since then I have been walking on my own. I couldn't be happier, not only did he save my life, he was a good doctor. I'm grateful I was referred to someone who actually listens and cares for his patients, and does all he can to get them back to normal. Unfortunately, our last appt I was still in a wheelchair part time because any real distance was still very difficult, but I wanted to leave this so he would hopefully know that his hard work paid off, and has changed everything for me. I am almost back to normal and working hard to get there, we are going camping soon, first time in 2 years. Thank you for fixing me when other surgeons wouldn't. I have my life back and I am so grateful.
Fantastic experience: At 81 I had a total hip replacement done by Dr Mildren. I was able to take care of myself, dogs, and cats at home the afternoon of surgery. At the end of the first week I was able to walk with only aid of a cane and walk up and down the stairs dozens of times a day.
Fantastic experience: Went to Dr. Lucas Korcek for my hip pain that was killing me. Got into see him with less than stellar health insurance, but never was I treated with disrespect. McKenzie Willamette Hospital was outstanding as well. Checked in for surgery hurting really bad. Came out of surgery pain free. Never used a single pain pill. I could have easily walked the day of surgery without crutches, but did not. Just shocked at how great of a job he did. Will be getting injections in my hip for a while and Dr Routhier is outstanding! Painless and quick! I would go to Korcek for just about any orthopedic surgery I ever need. Younger, but extremely knowledgeable and pleasant to work with. He has impressed a lot of doctors in Coos Bay.
Fantastic experience: My Daughter had to go here for a fracture on her wrist. They were very detailed, checked throughly, and they were very kind. When she had to have her cast taken off they were vety patient and awesome. (Despite my daughter being very very scared) Great people.
Fantastic experience: I had an emergency surgery. Calling and dealing with the staff at Slocum is not always the easiest thing when your in pain and suffering. Lisa Maddox one of the clinical staff has been the most helpful out of everyone I've spoke to. I greatly appreciate the help, listening and understanding she has given me through my healing. Defiantly appreciate you Lisa Maddox. Thank you for being a kind and caring person.. it's not east breaking a bone.
Negative experience: I had a knee surgery performed at Slocum almost a decade ago. That experience went pretty great. The staff was helpful, the doctor did thorough follow up, the therapy staff were pretty great. All went well. Apparently, things are not well there anymore. I had a visit last week that has resulted in Slocum screwing up my prescription, and afterwards taking ZERO responsibility of the issue, and doing virtually nothing to help remedy it. I have called and called, stories contradict, people don't call back, and they seem content to make it my problem now. This is a very unpleasant experience, and I don't recommend visiting this place if you have options. *EDIT/UPDATE* Gave up on Slocum and went elsewhere. Slocum took an MRI and reported back nothing was torn and there was nothing they could do. I took that same MRI, the same set of images, to another provider for a second opinion. That Dr. set me down and went over the images with me. He showed me where the TWO tears were. I'm presently scheduled for Surgery. The other doc said, and this is a quote, "I don't understand what image they were looking at. It's very visible" Long story short, I'll never visit Slocum again. *Final Update* I am now 2 months post-op from having the problem fixed elsewhere. Doc says I am recovering nicely. I am doing PT and that is going well. The pain is GONE. Fixed! I want to keep this review updated because this stuff is important. This is our lives, our health. It should never be treated the way I was treated at Slocum.
Negative experience: Absolutely aweful. I'm never seeing him again. I was early for my appointment and never introduced himself. If I could leave no stars I would. when I said I injured my knee (torn ACL and meniscus) at pride he basically didn't acknowledge me or my husband. He never asked me if any of the range of motion tests he had me do hurt or what my pain scale was. He pinched my knee so hard during the "exam", that I could feel my knee clicking and a sharp pain up and down my leg. It throbbed for the rest of the day. I had to ask him to go over my MRI with me because I was doing a surgery consult. he rushed through it and then turned his back to me so I had to ask the office staff who was standing there to get his attention so I could ask him follow up questions.
Negative experience: Reviewed an MRI 3 weeks before appointment and made the decision surgery wasn't necessary without even touching or assessing in person. Awful!! Waited 2 months for an appointment and he canceled without even talking or touching. This is awful care and just bad practice.
Fantastic experience: It has now been a year since my bilateral hip replacement has been done. I can not thank Dr Brian Jewett and his staff for a very caring experience. I was so scared to have this major surgery for over 3 years, but my first visit with Dr. Brian Jewett I felt so comfortable and completely trusted him. He is very caring, very honest, very educated and very professional. I have been doing wonderful, with no pain! I have been able to do everything again. If I could have him as a primary Dr. I would pick him for that too. I give 10+ stars,
Negative experience: This may have quite possibly been one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had with a doctor. His demeanor was cold and he clearly was rushing. When I tried to ask him questions he would talk over me, cut me off or talk so continuously that I couldn’t get a word in. He also responded to some of my questions incredibly rudely and in a condescending manner. For example I asked him what my doctor records from 2009 said (hoping for maybe some potential insight into my chronic shoulder issue) when I had visited Slocum as a child and he said “what do you want me to do tell you what they said word for word.” I was very surprised as there was a scribe in the room and he still had the audacity to act that way. I was sorely let down as his reviews otherwise were very good and now I’m wondering if that is really the case or if they are being filtered somehow. Any doctor who actually cares about their patients would never treat someone the way he treated me.
Fantastic experience: My 2 shoulder replacements both lasted about 1 1/2 years each, and then they "broke." The pain is horrible. I have done 9 major surgeries in 4 1/2 years. Please find a better shoulder replacement Dr. if you think you must do shoulder replacement! I was much better off with worn-out shoulders !
Fantastic experience: I have had a long relationship with Slocum Center between myself and family members. I have never had a negative experience. I recently had a total knee replacement with Dr. Walton and so did my mother on the very same day. We both felt he did a fantastic job and the care we received was top notch. I can now take a flight of stairs without pain and discomfort!! A couple of months after my total knee replacement, my son fell from a skate board and landed on his elbow breaking his ulnar bone right at the elbow joint. He was seen by Dr. Tavakolian on a Thursday and a surgery was scheduled the following Tuesday to place pins. My son is still recovering from the surgery, but I feel he was well taken care of and that he will continue to heal and be almost like he'd had no injury at all. Thank you Dr. Walton for giving me back my mobility and Dr. Tavakolian for giving my son back use of his arm again!!!
Fantastic experience: The first appointment I had with Dr Bear was comforting and got every detail I needed for my wrist surgery. Dr Bear definitely knows how to do his job well! I was expecting at least 2 months to heal! I began to heal within 7 days! Thank you! All of the staff was amazing!
Fantastic experience: I was having shots in my knees..scared needles an pain...but they were every good and kept me calm..DR. Craig M. I highly suggest if you need help like this to call...
Fantastic experience: The best docotrs arround are there. And they are the best i have ever seen n talked to....
Fantastic experience: Had my left knee replaced by the ultimate surgeon, Dr. Jewett. Just had an appointment with his PA Lisa Hobart. She was exceptional! Excellent bedside manner, listened and answered my every concern!
Fantastic experience: Everyone who works here is absolutely amazing! Shelby went above and beyond to help me. Also everyone knows my name which makes me feel good
Fantastic experience: I have had two surgeries done there now so I thought I’d leave a review. The first surgery I had was for a posterior larbral tear in my shoulder, this year I broke my foot and the compassion with which I was treated was top notch. I was a grown adult in tears from pain and I was met with understanding and a clear want to see me feel better. Surgery from check in to check out went flawless. They are relaxed, organized and everyone knows what job they are doing.
Fantastic experience: I just had a knee surgery there and Dr.Dowdle has been amazing. I also am super appreciative of my PT staff. Shelbi really pushes me and is just super awesome. I feel taken care of with slocum and trust my team. Thank you slocum.
Fantastic experience: Great staff wonderful doctors Everyone that I've talked to has been very friendly Great text reminders and being able to check in and fill out paperwork before you get there on your phone is amazing
Fantastic experience: When it comes to care, there simply is no finer institution in the state of Oregon! The surgeons are top notch! Dr. Lantz has been my orthopedic surgeon for the past 12-years and in my opinion there is not a finer surgeon on the planet! I have had surgeries both at Slocum and at River Bend and the Slocum experience ranks at the top of my list for care provided! The physical therapy department is second to none! Amy is my primary Physical Therapist and she is FANTASTIC!! She takes the time to listen and develop a plan to improve range of motion and strength and with her guiding my recovery, I seem to improve and recover extremely fast! Slocum is a fine institution and anyone coming here can be confident in knowing they are getting world class care from world class and highly capable healthcare professionals from top to bottom!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Jewett is a great surgeon and doctor. Over the past 10 years, he has helped me understand what's causing my problems and how to fix them. He is very kind and understanding.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Tavakolian is an excellent surgeon and also has a kind, caring manner. He has done surgery on each of my hands and the results have been great. I highly recommend him.
Fantastic experience: All the Slocum staff and Dr. Koester were very efficient and very professional. It was a great visit and was able to accomplish multiple things in the same day since we live four hours away.
Fantastic experience: Slocum is fast and very customer service oriented! In and out fast with scheduling a follow-up appointment. Dr. Koester was kind, professional, and conservative in his treatment plan.
Fantastic experience: Excellent care, the clear competence inspires confidence. My only less positive comments are that as an elective procedure, it took over 4 months to get in for the outpatient procedure and it should be noted that the post procedure course involved more pain than the 600 mg ibuprofen could keep up with in order to maintain a pain score during the first night below a 4+.
Fantastic experience: A rare find, a doctor that listens to the patient. He explains everything in easy to understand terms. He explained alternative treatments and before working with him I thought surgery was my only option. I am very happy with the care he provided . Additionally his staff is professional and caring, overall an excellent experience.
Fantastic experience: Had knee surgery and all of the nursing staff was incredibly kind and professional and made a nervice person feel at ease. Thank you. Dr. Mildren was great, would not hesitate to recommend Slocum to anybody.
Fantastic experience: I’ve had a great experience with everyone at Slocum Orthopedics. Dr. Jewett is very nice and answers all my questions. He alway comes in with a smile that can be seen under the face mask. He’s very up front with information but tells it in away to avoid adding additional stress to a (usually) stressful situation when visiting a surgeon.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Fitzpatrick is very caring and empathetic and, though I know he takes his profession very seriously, he's always smiling and friendly and has a relaxed and happy demeanor which always puts me, (the one with the "white coat syndrome") at ease. Did I mention that I think he's the best surgeon ever!
Fantastic experience: I can’t believe what an easy and pleasurable experience this was, even under difficult circumstances. The clinic was extremely busy, but we were still greeted with the most friendly and knowledgeable staff. Dr. Campion was thorough and explained every detail. She was an absolute delight.
Fantastic experience: Dr.Straub Is the best.I have had 2 knees and a hip replacement I am walking 5 to 6 miles 6 days a week. Dr Straub has really helped me a great deal. Super staff. I wish him the very best in retirement.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Routhiere listens, thinks, and offers her best. We really like her. She found a loose screw in Norma's heal. She wrote a prescription for a topical pain treatment from an apothecary. She referred us to Dr. Jackson if we need further evaluation. All new and helpful directions. Great experience.
Fantastic experience: My experience was nothing less than phenomenal. Dr.Tavakolian and his staff cared for me with compassion and professionalism beyond my expectations. He explained everything to me before, during and after my surgery. And it went just as he explained it to me.No surprises. The 1 to 5 star rating just isn't enuff stars! ....Once again Thank you Dr.Tavakolian and all your nurses and staff.
Fantastic experience: Thank you Dr. Korck for your expertise, kindness and whole person care provided to me during the arthroscopic scar reduction and manipulation of my knee. It meant a great deal to me that you called me at home after surgery to tell me about it. I also appreciate having the surgery photos and your description of the procedure at my 2 week post-op appointment. Because of your help I will be returning to my activities.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Routhier is an excellent physician. Very professional but friendly and has great technical competence, especially when it comes to giving knee injections. And she has that rare quality among doctors, she really listens and does not rush through the appointment. She gets my highest recommendation and is a real credit to Slocum.
Fantastic experience: I broke my right ankle very badly. I feel very lucky Dr Lyle Jackson was on call. He did an excellent job of putting it back together. It took many screws and a plate to put it back together. I had no pain with it after the surgery. After almost two months of wearing a big heavy boot and lot's of PT. I am well on my way to recovery. I highly recommend Dr Jackson at Sloclume in Eugene, Oregon. Gloria Rodgers
Positive experience: Dr. Jackson performed surgery on a number of my toes that were making it very difficult for me to walk because of the pain. He did do two surgeries on my feet. The first three days after surgery I did have some pain at night. I’m allergic to most pain pills that adds to problem. He seems to care about his patients. I would recommend him if you have a foot problem. I would recommend Slocum’s’ surgery center. The people their are friendly and helpful. Take it from someone that’s had two knees and a hip replaced by them.
Fantastic experience: I have never had such an efficient experience in a medical setting. I arrived early, as requested, to check-in. Completed that and was sent upstairs. Before I could even sit down they called my name. They took me back for x-rays and said someone would be there to take me back to the doctor. It was a couple of minutes and the doctor was in the room in no time. Dr. Koester was thorough, but quick. I didn't feel rushed, but got the answers I needed. Highly recommend SLOCUM in general, and Dr. Koester.
Fantastic experience: Dr Godfrey did everything she could to help me get carpal tunnel surgery while pregnant. She appealed my insurance denial for me, but it didn't work out. In an effort to minimize the pain of carpal tunnel, she has given me the cortisone shot, which worked wonders, for a while. I wish that my insurance was not trying to save money and cutting the surgery services for women who are pregnant, and other people who have been determined to be high risk or something like that... But this Dr is amazing and I recommend her services to everyone!! She really cares and she listens and she is creative, proactive, and genuinely a well educated provider!
Fantastic experience: The Slocum experience was one smooth operation. Guidance was efficient and attentive. Dr. Routhier could not have been more considerate. Her manner was kind and respectful. The best kind of doctor's visit is one in which the patient believes that their concerns are of primary importance to the provider. That was the case with Dr. Routhier. It was a time well spent.
Fantastic experience: Foot surgery at Slocum was new to me and left me with such gratitude. Gina took such good care of me pre op. She was like a mom, fussing, making sure I was ok over and over again. We talked about travel, our girls, life, husbands. She was such a bright light in the room. I loved her humor, gumption and tender heart. Dr. Ross couldnt have been kinder. He was an expert with my nerve injection. Sweet, kind, gentle. He pointed out the nerves from the ultra sound and explained exactly what he was doing. Dr. Jackson appeared with info on what was going to happen in surgery. He was very comforting. Then fun AJ appears and gently pushed my giant bed into the OR. The OR team got to work. They made me feel very safe. Miss Tina, originally from Guam, fussed over me post op. She worked effortlessly to make sure I was prepared to go home. The shorts she helped me into were HUGE but necessary to go over my boot. I appreciated her humor and gentle nature. Finally Corey checked in with me day after surgery. Wanted to make sure I was good, asked questions, expressed importance of meds, reminded me to read discharge papers. This team made a scary situation doable and made me feel right at home. I would love to thank each and everyone who helped me pre, during and post op and let then know that they matteted greatly. Ki. Ward
Fantastic experience: I had surgery 2 months ago for a trigger finger. The surgery went well and the nurse and Dr Campion were so thorough in explaining everything about the procedure. I felt very comfortable and actually watched the surgery. Dr Campion explained what she was doing and I really appreciated her perfectionism. I would recommend her to anyone!!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Jewett performed a double hip replacement in late December 2020. My experience could not have been better. Fabulous staff my rehabilitation has been better than expected and I can’t imagine making a better choice. My concerns have been addressed as I have moved through the post surgery rehabilitation at every point. I am very well pleased
Fantastic experience: Outstanding surgery Dr. Jackson has Great bedside manner before going into surgery. Very informative talk which made me feel at ease and comfortable about the procedure. Need to give a Shout Out to his support team that made it a successful day.
