Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital: Reviews
Fantastic experience: After suffering a fall from a tree stand and fracturing a spinal bone and my pelvis in five places, I was fortunate to be admitted to Mary free bed. I’ll begin by saying that this hospital truly lives up to its reputation. The care I received around the clock was incredible. They cover every possible detail. The staff were professional, knowledgeable, and compassionate. I would list their names but fear I will forget someone. MFB, thank you.
Fantastic experience: I was is rehab back in August. The people that I was taken care of me, was just out standing. I wish I could have given them a hug before I left. I was in room 3216. Thanks to you all. Tom Harrier. I hope you can pass this on with them!
Fantastic experience: I was at Mary Free bed for rehabilitation the staff nurses and tech nurses were also good so is the physical therapy and the occupational therapy
Positive experience: Beautiful, clean facility with great therapists for the most part. Nursing staff was great. The doctors need to get on the same page with treatment and care. A lot of conflicting opinions and ideas that leave the patient wondering which one is the one you listen to and trust. Attempting to discharge prematurely because a patient is Medicare is wrong. We appealed and our insurance agreed that my husband needed more care. The dr didn’t react well to the decision. He said that he “needs to keep the lights on” ….obviously referring to money and profits. Totally inappropriate. If they are unhappy with Medicare or find it to be something they don’t want to participate with, just don’t accept Medicare. Discharging someone before it is safe to do so is absolutely wrong. It is also wrong to be more concerned with profits than patient’s safety and care. We were really expecting better.
Fantastic experience: All the people involved in my infant grandsons therapy are awesome! Everyone takes the time needed to make sure you understand everything! Definitely recommend them!
Negative experience: My experience with Pt has been horrible seems they did not want to help me learn how to do things very rude Pt staff

Fantastic experience: Good place
Positive experience: Great care for my mom but our family didn't find the medical staff friendly. Call button was often a 15-25 min wait. To stay the best of the best, please make sure your employees are not only medically qualified but also approachable.
Hi Jill, we are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your, or our, expectations. Please feel free to contact our Quality and Risk Department at 616-840-7137 to further discuss this. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: David in St Joseph is the greatest.
Fantastic experience: Empathy, expertise and experience are rarely seen altogether like they are here. So grateful for the warm welcome and positive perspective of everyone here. It is a hope-filled space!
Fantastic experience: My 4 year old son was diagnosed with transverse myelitis at Helen Devos, and after his steroid treatments we were sent to Mary Free Bed for physical and occupation therapy. We were immediately greeted by our nurse for the evening who answered all of the questions we had about the facility, and a nutrition worker who took our order for food. His doctor team was in room within a few hours to explain his prognosis. His entire care team was absolutely phenomenal. From his nurses and aids to his therapists and doctors. PT found fun and safe ways to peak his interest and he went from being unable to sit up unassisted to walking with little help in 2 1/2 weeks! He asks about Ms Rhianna and Ms Kylie daily! OT was incredibly helpful with re toilet training, showering, and re learning how to dress himself. His doctor team updated me as much as possible. Our social worker helped find a place for me to stay nearby that insurance covered and provided meal cards for the entirety of our stay. I can’t say enough good things about this facility. Thank you very much Mary Free Bed for taking such great care of my sweet boy!
Hi Sarah! Thank you so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care for your son and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you and your son the best!
Fantastic experience: I was a patient in 2021 I had nerve damage on my left arm. I spent 10 days there. I would recommend any one with an injury and they will get things working again. When I left there I had Limited use of my left arm and with more physical therapy I got the use of my left hand in two months and full use of my left arm in six months
Hi Richard, Thank you so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care for you and so glad you have had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough good things about my experience here thus far. If you are someone who struggles with hyper-mobility or hEDS, I think it’s worth asking your doctor about PT with someone who is familiar with hyper-mobility. Generalized PT can do more harm than good for those of us with connective tissue disorders, and Maggie and Adam at MFB are phenomenal. I can’t say enough good things about them. They are both so knowledgeable and helpful. They genuinely want to help, and that’s sometimes hard to find these days! I’m thankful for this place.
Negative experience: Need to speed up the process of registering patients on the 5th floor. Transportation people need to get in and get out so we can go get other patients . Wait time is way too long. Was back again today with another patient, why is it the 5th floor is the only one that you have to stop and register the patient, than wait for a nurse to come get them. All other floors you can take the patient right to their room and nurse meets you there. PLEASE do something to speed up the process on the 5th floor so transportation people can get in and out and not be LATE for their next pick up.
Hi Scott, we are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your, or our, expectations. Please feel free to contact our Quality and Risk Department at 616-840-7137 to further discuss this. Thank you.
Negative experience: Had an appointment with doctor Lamm at which he got some crucial information wrong. I sent a message to try to clarify things and instead received a call from someone else saying that they didn’t understand the message. The person who called asked me to explain what I was looking for with the message I sent but then kept cutting me off and hung up on me while I was trying to answer what she had asked.

Negative experience: OUR GRANDFATHER DIED TODAY BECAUSE OF LACK OF CARE. THIS PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY UNPROFESSIONAL. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. ABSOLUTELY HEART BROKEN BECAUSE NO ONE HAD THE MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO TREAT OUR GRANDFATHER. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED
Mary, We are so sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your, or our, expectations. Please feel free to contact our Quality and Risk Department at 616-840-7137 to further discuss this. Thank you.
Negative experience: Worst experience ever physical therapy states it’s not her job to do stretches a movement….. the prosthetics department does not associate and talk with physical therapy department. There’s no communication between the departments. Lack of organization. Got leg amputated an 4 months no stretch exercises or anything with leg amputation

Positive experience: Relative had a stroke/heart attack at their facility. Stay NEVER said one word about it. Asked why she was non verbal ,"umm not sure". NO fruit on there menu. Poor bedside manner of caseworker. She's very snide and snotty. This place has gone down hill so much. No recommendations to give.

Fantastic experience: Beautiful facility, great staff, valet parking, easy access right off the highway off Wealthy Street.
Hi T! Thanks so much for the kind words. We are thrilled to provide rehabilitative care and so glad you've had a positive experience.
Negative experience: After being sent here from Helen Devos on Jan 19th via Ambulance, told it could be 18 days likely at least 2 weeks we were pushed out the door today, they wanted to yesterday, Jan 27th. Mind you he didn't even get any therapy from Friday 19th thru weekend either. After seeing him 1 day Jan 22nd Tuesday morning 23rd they said he should be good to go home on 27th at 10am. When I pushed back they all the sudden changed things to Jan 31st 10am said they discussed with PT, OT nurses and Drs and had more goals to meet. Then come Friday 26th they changed it back to the 27th. Come to find out like most medical situations they changed his level of care based upon insurance versus having care be focus. Also, insurance even approved 8 days of coverage but due to mismanagement on their side he wasn't there for 2 days of coverage, Jan 17th or 18th, and then nothing was done for the weekend. So from 18 days to 5 days of therapy, insurance falsely billed for 8. We are left broken and have to pick up their pieces. Dr. Henry forced us out today based upon my son being able to walk at all, no label on condition or function, and being able to get up stairs with using arms and railing. We are devastated at the bait and switch of Mary Free Bed "and breakfast". Cheated out of full care should have received, insurance paid for as well. I would shop around options especially if it's pediatric unit. They don't staff weekends they admitted and Dr. Henry as well as several nurses confirmed and also frustrated by. Updated video 2/7/24 see video of my son in green shirt. Weeks after being pushed out early after just 1 and a half days at school... Yeah he was ready for full time school and no outpatient rehab recommendations seriously pisses me off the neglect especially for a pediatric facility. Purely $ motivation only here. We had to waste the time and money at Dr PCP today she said he definitely should have had more PT and recommended outpatient now. Mary Free Bed should be ashamed

Fantastic experience: I was your Hospital back December 2019 for 3 Strokes , due having Moya Moya diseace,I had great Doctors and Nurses were so caring and my Physical Therepist Tim W also my Speech Therepist you all do so good too let come back home thank you so much for everything
Negative experience: They visited my husband's hospital bed called 3 times left folder , called my home numerous times , made arrangements at the hospital they are affiliated with and came to conclusion if my husband couldn't do three straight hours of physical therapy he was not a candidate for their establishment
We are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your, or our, expectations. Please feel free to contact our Compliance Director at 616-840-8225 to further discuss this. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: My husband Billy had the opportunity two times this year, to recover at Mary Free Bed in Grand Rapids. First time was for recovery due to a major back fusion surgery. The second time was due to a head-on collision just 3 months after graduation from MFB. Both times Bill worked with many different physical and occupational therapists, as well as a team of doctors, nurses, medical techs, meal aids and even housekeeping. Everyone was very helpful, pleasant and expressed great care in his recovery. We are very pleased that we were able to work with these professionals. Their care helped speed up his recovery, and made the very difficult situation more tolerable. Thank you to all of the team at Mary Free Bed. Keep up the good work. Bill and Jo Alex
Hi Jo, Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care for Bill and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you both the best!
Fantastic experience: Cannot thank this staff enough. Mindy our cena was incredible. She got to know my dad more than anyone on that floor. She was patient and stern when he needed to be pushed and always kind. Stacy and Tamika were great nurses administering pills even when my dad had a hard time understanding and was a bit stubborn. The ot and pt were fabulous, Daniel and Rachel were so incredibly helpful the whole time he was there. He loved all of these people so much. Shout out to our kind PA Katie who was very on top of checking in and making sure my dads pain was manageable. They were all such great listeners and care takers.
Hi Stephanie, Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care for your dad and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you both the best!
Negative experience: I had an appointment with the orthotics & prostate dept on October 10 and my brace will nor been done...it was told it would be ready

Fantastic experience: Amazing! If your doctor recommends PT/OT go here. Seriously, I've been around the block. Just go here. I promise!
Hi Alan! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough nice things about MFB. I was sent there because I couldn’t move my arms and legs due to GBS. I am now walking and back to a normal life-style. The thing that stands out is that my whole experience was not doom and gloom. It stood out to me that the nurses always came into my room with a smile. I had a number of bed sores from the previous hospital and, because of the MFB nurses these were gone fairly soon. I won’t write more but I definitely could continue to praise MFB in other areas.
Hi Tom! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Fantastic experience: I stayed here. Was paralyzed now I am walking with a cane. Can’t say they healed me but I can tell you they played a part and set me on a path to recovery that has me now walking, riding a bike daily, and chasing a dream. Everyone I worked with was a pro from Doctors to therapists and nurses. The hospital is state of the art. I’m riding my bike there this week to say thanks.
Hi Ron! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Negative experience: Mary freebed had great staff and overall great Rehabilitation Center but my case manager failed to submit my FMLA paperwork to my HR department at work. I called her twice and left a message for her to submit it because she had it for over a week and never submitted it. Then I was discharged and found out it was never submitted. I lost my FMLA leave and my medical insurance because of it. Plus I lost all the lost wages I was going to receive from my car insurance. When I finally got ahold of her she said she had given it to someone and then they took a week off and that was why it wasn't submitted.

Fantastic experience: Love them helped me get my life back!
Thank you Mike.
Fantastic experience: Loved it was very impressed with the whole staff. My son was in an accident and had some brain injury, so had to learn how to walk eat to do everyday basics and MFB got him thru this, me and my son walked out of there and is doing great...Ty guys we will be back to say hi.....miss the staff and sitters
Thank you for the kind review.
Fantastic experience: Hands down the best place I've ever worked. It's inspiring to be a part of such a great place and to see the impact that is made on peoples lives.
Fantastic experience: My son was the victim to ain a drive by shooting. He took 2 bullets in his spine...Doctors told me he probably wouldn't live and if he did his chances of ever walking was slim to none after surgery... After almost two months at Mary Free Bed .. With the help of staff and help of therapists Kristy and Daina my was walking with the help of a walker short distances and using a wheel chair. Two months later wheelchair was gone... Two months after that walker is gone... With the help of braces and s cane my son is now walking... Had it not been for the help of Mary Free Bed and its excellent staff my son would be the person he is today...
Fantastic experience: We were referred to Mary Free Bed for a possible helmet for our 9 month son. I was very hesitant to get a helmet for my son but I am so happy that we did! We worked with Melissa Cordial-Stout and she was amazing!! She worked so well with my son and answered all of my questions (I had many!). She gave us plenty of time and space to discuss whether or not we wanted proceed with the helmet. I highly recommend Mary Free Bed!
Hi Grace! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care for your son and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Negative experience: As a hospital and state and federally funded, I feel they need to stick to their expertise, which is rehab. They seem to want to teach children about PRIDE month. I feel that’s for a parent or guardian. They go as far as post about PRIDE month on their FB page. I feel as a hospital, it’s not appropriate. Plus, they stated, PRIDE is for everyone. THAT IS UNTRUE. It’s not for everyone. People do not need to support what they feel is against their Biblical beliefs or personal beliefs. Separation of Church and State needs to be followed. Plus, my beliefs should not be forced on others. This is esp true when a hospital receives tax dollars from a governmental agency. Medical staff are forbid in wearing ANY political pins. How about this lifestyle choice? They are excluding many people who may need their services because of their bold stand on personal beliefs. It’s completely irresponsible on their part. I am sure not all employees are on- board with this bold stand on PRIDE. I guarantee you, not all employees are on board with their bold stance. Yet, need to walk past huge rainbow posters hung on their wall.
Fantastic experience: Pretty & clean with nice big private rooms!
Hi Lori! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Fantastic experience: Great people very concerned about your health
Fantastic experience: Developed an ulcer under my BKA prosthesis just before my wife was do home following same-day hip replacement. We are in our eighties and live otherwise alone. A wonderful Prosthetist at your Lansing office made adjustments and got me back on my feet "just in time"....Many Thanks! Wife (retired CRNA-Sparrow) doing very well too!
Fantastic experience: Staff is Amazing... Very caring and friendly
Negative experience: Very non- transparent surprise billing. I was not informed I would be charged for a “facility” fee on top of my specialist copay at the time of service. This was for a simple outpatient 45 minute visit I had to talk about the chronic pain program. I feel taken advantage of I did everything on my end to know how much I would owe for my visit with my insurance co pay and was not informed ahead of time or at all that there would be additional charges.

Fantastic experience: The care I have received from Mary Free Bed is outstanding. The staff seems like each person was hand-chosen with qualifications of outgoing and cheerful personality, strong medical knowledge, and above average skills within individual fields. Even support staff such as in housekeeping exhibit strongly positive attitudes and friendly communication with patients.
Hi Barb, Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Fantastic experience: I was able to get an appointment and be evaluated quickly, thoroughly and well informed of the results ✅
Hi Trish! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Fantastic experience: I will start by saying it was a nerve wrecking referral. We ended up coming and meeting with Doug Richardson. He is a certified Orthotist. We needed a helmet for our 6 month old. He was so kind and made us feel like we were working with a friend the whole time. Scheduling was so easy also! He was a o accommodating while we were there and always so good with our girl during her appointments! As happy as we are to be done with our helmet journey, we are sad to say goodbye to our friends at Mary Free Bed! 10/10 recommend.
Hi Madalynn! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care for your daughter and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you both the best!
Fantastic experience: Five shining stars for Doug Richardson in Helmet Therapy. He is one of the kindest men I have ever met. He is extremely knowledgeable and has excellent rapport with little ones and concerned family. Did a remarkable process with my sweet great granddaughter, River!
Hi Billie! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care for sweet River and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you both the best!
Negative experience: Some of the staff is really nice but there is one nurse named Mary and she was not nice to us and there are more people that aren't the nicest and the staff is very unsure about a lot of things but other than that we had a good stay

Negative experience: mixed feelings about my stay here. i wont lie, the PT definitely helped. i went in with no strength whatsoever due to the harsh chemotherapy i was undergoing, to the point where i couldnt even sit myself up in bed without assistance, but my sessions here helped regain half of my strength within just a week. i was now able to at least get out of bed and move around with a walker. that being said, the stay here was mentally draining. being a cancer patient who was undergoing chemotherapy, i’d forget things easily, couldnt speak properly, and developed anxiety to the point of panic attacks. i called for a nurse my first night there with concerns because I felt like I was going to pass out (a panic attack was actually starting up) and 2 other nurses came in with her and just looked at me with nothing to say. instead, she told me to go to sleep because it was getting late rather than administer me some anxiety meds, which was in my med chart and authorized to be given when needed. i then called my fiancé to come back so he could comfort me, and when he arrived the same nurse thought it was appropriate to make a joke to him about me being “crazy” which made me and my fiancé uncomfortable. the staff here seem to be medically negligent when it comes to things not related to physical therapy, despite having nurses and doctors on site. within the first 10 minutes i was admitted to MFB, there was a man on my floor crying because he claims the nurses were trying to force him into getting a catheter when he didn’t need it, and how the nurses never answer his call light. despite there being some good aspects about my stay here, i cant ever get over the negative things i experienced.

Fantastic experience: I get my prosetic shoes here! They care and helpful! Love Mary free bed.
Hi Jennifer! Thanks so much for the kind words. We're thrilled to provide rehabilitative care and so glad you've had a positive experience. We wish you the best!
Negative experience: Absolute worst experience trying to schedule an appointment for my daughter. They are not organized. I had emergency surgery in December. I call the next day to cancel my appointment for the following week because I couldn't drive. They didn't cancel it and then called and told me I was a no call no show. And now they keep telling me that because they are booked so far out my referral will be expired and then I have get a new one before they can schedule me a new appointment. I don't have any idea how their therapists are because their scheduling department is so terrible.
We are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your, or our, expectations. Please feel free to contact our Quality and Risk Department at 616-840-7137 to further discuss this. Thank you.
Negative experience: They do not help People with chronic pain and high blood pressure all they care about is the Money. Dr Phillip Baty is the worst Dr very he does not care for his Patience.

Fantastic experience: Amazing place amazing staff I don’t believe I could’ve asked to Be treated better anywhere they were so kind and understanding all day long and all night through and I did put them to the test the first two or three days God bless you folks and Mary free bed thank you thank you for being you
Fantastic experience: My father was here for 6 weeks for rehab after a stroke. The healthcare team here is very flexible and did everything possible to make him and my family feel comfortable. Dr. Daniel Fechtner handled my father’s case with the utmost compassion, knowledge, and sensitivity. He and the entire team is very hard working, quick to accommodate patient requests, and have the patient’s best interests in mind. Mary Free Bed provided all the support and education my family needed to care for a stroke patient at home. Without Mary Free Bed, my father may not have had much time after the stroke. They are very caring and generous people. I have immense respect for the whole team at Mary Free Bed and they provide the best environment for recovery. HK
Fantastic experience: Can't say enough good things about Mary Freebed. The nurses and physical therapists and Dr are so amazing. I got the treatment I needed to be able to walk. I can't thank them enough for all they have done for me. Matt and Jessica were the best. They always made sure I had everything I needed, and made me feel very comfortable. You guys are the best. Thank you so much. Brandon Beimers.
Fantastic experience: I loved it here I was in for a long stay and it was amazing here. the staff and py Therapist were amazing so kind and awesome. The other staff were also kind and helpful, the place was always kept clean and it was just an overall amazing place if I ever get injured again and need to go to a rehabilitation hospital I will definitely be coming back here!!!!!
Negative experience: I was attacked by three men. This is not a safe place. Watch the Netflix movie The Day Will Come. True story.
Negative experience: Cafeteria review: if you love cross contamination then this is the place for you! You have to repeatedly tell them to change their gloves to prepare your food But as they prepare your food, they will prepare other people's food at the same time, which defeats the purpose of changing the gloves at all. The cafeteria is understaffed and overworked and if you have an allergy you will have to pay for their incompetence. I will never eat here again.
Fantastic experience: In 1989 I spent 9 months the first time in there and 3 months the second time I was shot in the head when I was 13 I was told I would be a vegetable for the rest of my life not being able to move no more then I was and that was barely moving my right index finger and leg Dr's said said I would go there for a short time and then to a long term foster care facility but I kept getting more mobility as time went on so they kept me there and in time had me moving and setting up by myself I loved this place they cared about there patients
Fantastic experience: After my car accident, went to Mary Free Bed for outpatient rehad. Received excellent care & treatment. After a long hospitalization, a few years later, I knew Mary Free Bed was the best place to go! Couldn't walk, talk, use my hands and my mind just wouldn't cooperate after being in a coma state for so long. Mary Free Bed arranged for my transfer from Butterworth to their facility. After 3+ weeks at Mary Free Bed, in hospital rehab/PT, all issues were resolved. The staff was excellent, worked together and their patience with me was beyond comprehension (I was the impatient one). Continued outpatient rehab/PT at Mary Free Bed, again so happy with the care and treatment I received and the concerns they showed to my husband and family.
Fantastic experience: When I have a stroke 6 years agoMary Free Bed was awesome and get me back on my feetI love the people there
Fantastic experience: Top notch facility with an even better staff. From doctors to house keeping and everyone in-between, simple amazing. There is no better choice for your rehabilitation needs.
Fantastic experience: Top notch facility from top to bottom! Ots and Pts were awesome. Nurses and nurse techs were generally outstanding! Dr. Vandenberg is a stand up and honorable doctor. One of the best I've ever had. Food was terrific with many things made from scratch! I'd highly recommend this facility. They always seemed to be on top of things. I wish I could have stayed longer to optimize my recovery, but insurance limits that. The facility is beautiful and staff seemed to know and care about patients. Great place!
Fantastic experience: This place is exceptional, I will say at least in the Grand Rápids MI area. Everyone working here is perfect for their job.
Fantastic experience: My husband was at MFB for 1.5 weeks. They are the reason he is progressing wonderfully. Every staff member was positive, happy, encouraging and pleasant!
Fantastic experience: My mother in law 81, had a bad fall with severe head injury and fracture pelvic. We are still here, she gets discharged on Tuesday. But I have nothing but great things to say about this place, she has physical, occupation, and speech therapy throughout the week, physically shes much better still working on the memory, but in due time I have faith she will be just fine. The only downside is the couch in the room for family that stays with the patient, very hard to sit in for round the clock and sleeping is even worse.
Negative experience: I would never recommend this place for rehab …never even evaluated my husband in the hospital but told us he wouldn’t be able to handle 3 hours of therapy a day and needed skilled nursing instead ..even his nurse confirmed that nobody came to his room when they said were there …he is doing very well at Blodgett Rehab, a much better facility
Positive experience: My husband was there for 12 days after a major Whipple Surgery for Pancreatic Cancer and lost 12 lbs. He had worked very hard with his therapist in our town to be strong enough to have this surgery after Chemotherapy. He declined medically to the point where he had to be returned to Butterworth Hospital due to malnutrition and dehydration. This facility is well equipped for patient with physical mobility and strength issues but they do not have a doctor on staff to monitor the side effects and medical needs of patients after major surgeries.

Fantastic experience: DphAhhp 6
Negative experience: My Dad was there for about 10 days. We were promised therapy 3 times a day, for about 45 minutes each time. That never happened. He never got his meds on time, mostly around 10pm and as late as midnight. They always had to interrupt his sleep at night. EVERY single meal was ice cold and horrible tasting . We took my Dad home y he did much better. If at all possible, do not go to Mary Free Bed! So disappointing!

Negative experience: We have to drive 120miles to get here for a neuropsych appointment that's gonna take up to 3hrs and they tell us only one parent is allowed to go in. It's 17* outside. Very disappointed I can't go in and get all the information about my 10year old daughter first hand.

Negative experience: Snotty receptionist with a bad attitude...asked for an insurance card and after I complied, had an attitude when I told her it shouldn't matter what or where I work when I have an Insurance Card like everyone else!! Someone buy her a coffee!!

Negative experience: I decided to stick with the therapist I was seeing since there are only a couple of sessions left. He is aware that I am indeed recovering from an injury.

Fantastic experience: Great Starbucks!
Negative experience: Worst experience of my prosthetic life. Taking a year and a half to make a prosthetic leg that I cannot comfortably wear. Causing me to miss work then telling me they cannot write me excuses for work anymore, that I'll have to see a regular doctor for that, even though it's entirely caused by prosthetic!!! I took the foot off the new unwearable prosthetic myself and put it on my 6 year old prosthetic. Cost me around $4,000.00. Insurance company over $10,000.00. I'd really appreciate my portion of the cost returned back to me, I emptied my bank account to pay in full.

Fantastic experience: This is a wonderful place . They are top notch people working here
Fantastic experience: My husband was 3 weeks at MFB about 3 years ago. They were very kind and extemely professional and very patient with him. Bless you all
Fantastic experience: This is for their valet specifically. The kid at valet today around 3:30 (younger guy, mixed, tall hair) was so super nice and very helpful (lifting in an 86lb wheel chair, no problem). I had been having a bad day and his politeness and helpfulness made me smile. I don’t know his name and haven’t seen him before but he was awesome!! Thanks for making my experience better.
Fantastic experience: Mary Free Bed is full of Healers. Over a lifetime of sports injuries and Ehlers-Danlos related repetitive injuries I have seen MANY practitioners and Physical Therapists; Mary Free Bed is the Gold standard by which I hold all my Doctors to. Their programs are unique, innovative, and all inclusive. The staff are kind and inviting. The Physical Therapy programs use some of the most cutting edge interventions and protocols while simultaneously makeing them individually relevant to the Client and their abilities session by session. The level of Compassion and understanding that the clinical staff and the Human Resources (phone calls & schedueling) Departments have is unmatched. If ever I need to reschedule I know that as fellow members of the Divergently Abled community, there will always be some on staff who understand what barriers I may be up against. Mary Free Bed is a Shining Star of Hope and Renewal and I am greatful that they are a part of MY journey to health a wellness. I know that they will walk beside me along the way and if I can't walk, they will help carry me until I can.
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff! I stayed there after I had a stroke, and I can't say enough good things about them!
Fantastic experience: Such friendly and familiar staff. I look forward every time I visit.
Fantastic experience: The folks that work here are awsome and the dr's,. they take time with you and let you know what they need to do to get you better!
Positive experience: The staff are very helpful and friendly. They seem to enjoy their job in helping others. My rehab is going well as can be expected and I look forward to going every time because they are helping me to heal.
Negative experience: A couple months ago we took Alex in for an autism evaluation. Thankfully he shows absolutely no signs of autism. Our pediatrician referred us to Mary Free Bed in Grand Rapids for the evaluation. The psychologist spent no more than an hour with Alex. I sat in their the whole time. My whole point on this post is that the medical field has become absurd. Without transparent pricing they just charge anything they want. No repercussions on them. We are lucky enough to be able to afford this bill, but how many parents cannot? Something needs to change, and until we all stand up nothing will. Mary Free Bed should be embarrassed by the amount that I'm going public with. It's disgusting! The original amount was 1449 dollars, but after contractual allowance it is still 818.87!

Negative experience: Horrible experience. Left feeling ignored and condescended by a physician who clearly took absolutely no time to read a report that was right in front of him. Rude, phobic, and misogynistic. I truly regret going.

Negative experience: Bad staff, unclean facilities, and terrible service. Find someplace else to go, where they treat you with respect.

Negative experience: Really poor customer service, forgetful staff, and terrible bedside manner. Staff all don’t seem to want to be there, or want to work with patients. Doctors don’t listen to patients, for example, when a specific procedure was requested, we were denied. Only later to have it ordered after 2 or 3 other procedures were done. This is either incompetence, or fishing for insurance money. Beyond this, they MAJORLY dropped the ball with their CoViD-19 policies, rather lack-thereof. The staff could use training on following policy and procedures, and cultural sensitivity training. Avoid if possible. Response to MFB: I have already followed the formal complaint procedure. Waste of time, as you are unwilling or unable to work on your glaring flaws and areas in need of intense growth.

Fantastic experience: Very clean. Very nice staff. They are helpful and attentive as well as the fact that they are always trying to seek your best interest
Fantastic experience: Was a great place toughy me to walk again after my lower back surgery
Fantastic experience: After a severe spine injury and 21 days of learning to walk again the staff at Mary felt more like family than my medical team. I owe my recovery to their balance of professionalism and kindness.
Fantastic experience: Their therapists are the reason I can walk and do daily tasks today after a motor vehicle accident when I was younger. And then recently my father had a stroke and they are working wonders and so patient with him. They also went above and beyond so my sister could get married there and have him with her. Cannot speak highly enough.
Fantastic experience: I spent 9 weeks at MFB for PT and OT following my diagnosis of GBS. I couldn’t have chose a better place for my rehabilitation. I cannot praise the doctors, nurses, tech’s and nutrition enough!
Negative experience: For Rehab they dont work with patients. Food dry, burnt, always cold.

Negative experience: Where do i begin my older brother was in a accident and the first day here at MFB He was assigned a therapist who was very RUDE to the point where he told my older brother u need to get up and start moving and if you don’t we are going to send you to a Nursing Home I was very shocked when he said that! Im very Upset with this place

Negative experience: My daughter was in a severe car accident and suffered a TBI. She's spent several weeks at Butterworth. We tried to transfer to MFB and they denied her saying she wasn't ready, so we went to the nations best neuro rehab facility in Chicago, Shirley Ryan Ability Lab (super highly recommended amazing place that isn't afraid to take on challenging cases). After two months there we needed to get closer to home and we tried to transfer to MFB, denied again, even though she was progressing well and could easily handle more therapy. You get a one star review because we heard great things about your program and you could have helped our daughter and yet you actively chose not to. She was denied not for insurance purposes or anything like that just because they didn't want to. Not a great look for you, isn't the purpose of your facility to help people in need? If you want to be great you have to prove your worth (Shirley Ryan did that and they helped her). Meanwhile she is recovering and continuing to get better. Could she have done better an MFB?? Who's to say, sadly we will never know.
Fantastic experience: I'm about to be discharged this Saturday December 1st 2018. This place is excellent I am so satisfied with the care I have had here. All the staff is excellent they really care about there patients. When you make improvements the get as excited as you do. I live in Arkansas if I ever need this kind of rehab if I could get here I would. Keith
Fantastic experience: My grandma spent 2 weeks here recovering and rehabbing from an injury. She has been out now for 2 weeks and at her new home, she's 97 years old. She really enjoyed her time here and all the activities she did in the short stay. She is so proud of her paintings done at one of the activity sessions and saved a little book of the menus and timelines so she won't forget. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful facility to care for our loved ones. The place is clean, well staffed and secure without feeling intrusive. They make it easy to be a visitor yet make the residents feel safe. great job
