She has had a long journey to reach her current position, starting out as a registered medical assistant and then completing an accelerated LPN program and working as a travel nurse. After that, she earned an Associate Degree in Nursing and worked for Sentara in the Aheart program. Most recently, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from ECPI. James River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center: Reviews
Fantastic experience: I was in desperate need of a place to put my brother who has numerous health issues. I goggled and this place popped up first. I stopped in, the first of the month and a woman named ms flipping , assisted me with a quick tour, because I didnt have much time and answered numerous questions I had because this is a scary process for me. Thank you for a nice facility and a welcoming staff member. I will bring my brother back to visit.
Thank you for the 5-stars and the kind words, Lorraine. Our Team is here to help you navigate the process.
Negative experience: Going into this place it has a very down and depressing feel. Every elderly person that’s in their look so sad. My Grandad is in there and has been in there for a while, and I feel like the treatment needs to be way better. There is a lack of care between some of the staff and the elderly patients. I asked someone to help assist my Grandad back into the bed because he does not have any legs, but they did not want to help him back in the bed so I had to really get firm and ask around to try to get him assistance because he’s been up for a while. There’s instances where I see employees just speak in rude tone. The whole experience there has just been very poor. There needs to be some type of empathy/ sympathy training and get people who actually care about the elderly.

Fantastic experience: I cannot say enough about the Rehab staff, James River is blessed with that Dept. I had a family member in there for 100 days and the Rehab dept was very involved. I recommend anyone that needs Rehab to go to Jame’s River.
Thank you for the 5-stars and the kind words about the Rehab Team, Siegfried. We will be sure to pass along your praises to the Team!
Positive experience: My mother in law was there in 2022 and the therapy dept was the best part of her stay. The therapy dept really encouraged patients to work hard so they could return home. The nursing staff could use more educational courses on how to relate to the patients better. I would rate Therapy Dept a 4 star.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, Judy. We strive for 5 stars, and will be sure to share your feedback with the Rehab Team.
Fantastic experience: Every one in PT are great. Especially Amber being really kind and patient with me.
Thanks for the 5-star review, Debbie. We are happy to hear you are pleased with the PT Team at James River.
Fantastic experience: Www. I love a good -.
Thank you for the 5-stars, Amy!
Negative experience: When you enter this place is sad and depressing… if they will paint the walls white bring the people spirits up give them something lively to look at and it smells horrible in there. The floors are sticky and dirty. Everybody has one blanket on a bed, no entertainment no music going on to keep them joyful, busy motivated energize, hopeful for living.
Thank you, Kimmie. We are currently in the process of remodeling several areas in our James River building. We will share your feedback with Leadership.
Negative experience: My mother in law was admitted here a little over a year ago. I have watched her go down so fast. She was a very sociable person. But they keep her in her room in a diaper all day. Isolation is not the answer. We were told her bed sores hurt her to much to move her anymore. There is no physical therapy for her legs. This once was a proud woman who loved to get her nails and hair done. The family washes her clothes. The food they serve her looks like dog food. Horrible horrible place.

Negative experience: It's not clean they don't get them out of the bed they hit the patient that nurse not they nomore its hot like fire and they still stealing the patient going in other people room

Negative experience: I have been visiting loved ones at this nightmarish facility for over 14 years and it is heart breaking to see how residents are treated. I have seen staff deliberately ignore a resident who needs to be changed just so they can finish socializing around the nurses station. And if a resident repeatedly asks (or demands) to be changed, they risk being yelled at to wait their turn. The food served to residents is barely edible, poor quality and frequently so under heated that it’s actually cold. I’ve seen the ice machine and portable coolers so slimy they made employees almost vomit. If a resident is able to care for themselves, they may do fairly well, but those who are fully reliant on the staff suffer tremendously. a stroke victim without the use of an arm was left to feed themselves and frequently went without eating at all. Keeping residents hydrated is virtually a non-priority. Potential new residents are given tours that are completely misleading to the actual conditions of this horrid place.

Negative experience: I have a very dear friend at your place and let me tell you it’s a horrible place. She stays in her diaper all day long and when you ask for help, they act like I was disturbing them. They were setting at desk on their cell phones. The food is cold. The breadstick she got the other day was FROZEN. My god!!!! Higher authorities need to be contacted and I’m sure they will be. Our older generation doesn’t need to be treated this way. It’s a damn shame

Negative experience: Theft is RAMPANT at this facility. Have a relative living there and and he's experienced multiple instances of clothing, personal belongings being stolen. Next time it happens we're notifying the Newport News Police Department to investigate-- it's that OUT OF CONTROL.

Fantastic experience: I have noticed new changes around the hall area’s.The care has so much improved since our new Director of Nursing has been part of the JR team.
Thank you, Tiara!
Fantastic experience: I move my mom here from Connecticut and December she has been through the rehab and now and the permanent nursing facility I have to give the upmost respect and gratitude to all of the nurses and rehab and on the Warwick unit when I come to the facility they are always very willing to help and to have my mom looking her best thank you to the nurses at the James River facility and especially Mike the TV guy who’s always making sure the ladies have what they need they might not be there at your beck and call because they are always shortstaffed but they are always there to attend to their needs so kudos to the nurses at James River nursing cover lesson
Thank you for the kind words and the 5 stars, Darlene. We are happy to hear your mom is enjoying James River. We will pass along your kudos to the Team!
Negative experience: My mother was admitted to this facility today and we had her removed tonight. The day staff is great but the evening temp staff is so unprofessional that it's a shame. The place has a bad odor, air conditioner does not work, food looks like dog food, and they have roaches. I would like to add that staff Ebony, Bri, Fatima and Evening Supervisor Ashleigh was very very helpful and our family would like to thank you two so very much!!!
Stacey, we have shared your comments with Senior Leadership.
Negative experience: While admitting my mother the day staff was very nice. Two hours later when I return a agency nurse was very demanding and unprofessional. The protocol had changed and we had to gown down and she had no infections. Then there was no meds and the doctor order from the hospital to your faculty got changed. Patients need love and care not unprofessional care. Great day staff but disgusting agency nurse whoever she was and she was a liar as well. Enough is enough, get new nurse and clean the place it stinks. Oh let me not forget to add the ROACHES!
Angela, we have shared your comments with Senior Leadership.
Negative experience: It should be shut down and burned. I don't think I can remember what it is like without roaches.my aunt said something about it.it wouldn't kill them on that front.and treating me like I am senile is just wrong.
Illy, your comments have been shared with our Leadership Team.
Fantastic experience: James River is doing a great job with my father. Communication with the staff has been excellent. Physical rehabilitation has gone as well as I could have hoped for.
Thanks for the 5 star review! We will be sure to share your positive feedback with the Team at James River.
Fantastic experience: I am very pleased as to the manner in which the facility handled the COVID pandemic. Initially it was frightening to know I could not visit my sister as I was accustomed to. However, the ability to utilize the communication options such as Zoom conferencing, window visits, VHS updates. As well as speaking with her social worker, nursing and activities staff, made a difference. Once things began to open back up via administered vaccines, and continuous monitoring, the ability to schedule indoor & outside visits have made it even better. Thank You!
Thank you Cassandra. While the pandemic presented challenges, we always did whatever we could to make sure our Residents and their loved ones were able to connect - even if it was virtually.
Fantastic experience: They take good care of my family. We enjoyed the activity.
Thank you for the compliments and 5-star review, Ms. Peyton!
Fantastic experience: James River Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center in my experience is a top notch facility with awesome quality of care that you won’t find anywhere else. The staff is so dedicated that they go far and beyond for our residents from our CNAs, nurses, dietary staff, housekeeping & laundry up to the management and in between. The staff not only encourage the residents to be their best but one another as well. I know this because I have seen it everyday since I started working there 3 years ago. You can’t find any better facility to care for your loved one then James River Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Shawn. We are happy to have you be a part of our team at James River Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center!
Fantastic experience: My Mom was a resident of James River Convalescent beginning 10/1/18 when she was transferred from another facility to be closer to my family on the Peninsula. From the day she arrived, her care was impeccable. The staff on G. S. Mitchell attended to her daily care and needs and treated her like she belonged to them. I was leery moving her in October concerned that her care would not be as good, but James River proved me wrong! When I went to anyone with a concern, it was addressed immediately, any changes in my Mom's care were reported to me timely. I had NO complaints. My Mom passed away on May 2, 2019 at James River with staff right by our side. I love these folks who were so good to my Mom....they will always be my family!! Sandy Bradshaw
We appreciate you taking time to provide feedback, your positive comments inspire and motivate the team here at James River Community. We are happy that you have becoming part of our family!
Fantastic experience: I volunteer at James River Convalescent and from what I have seen this is a wonderful facility! Staff is always willing to help and residents seen happy. I always enjoy coming in.
Thank you for your review and thank you most of all for being a volunteer!
Fantastic experience: I would recommend everyone who has a loved one that need compassion or just a friend to talk to please bring them here. My brother William Brown was there for three weeks and in that little time they did wonders for him. I want to thank the staff for putting up with him I know he was difficult at times. I thank you with all my heart. Love Roberta Brown
Negative experience: Cant speak for every hall. However, some of the staff there are very unprofessional. I understand "downtime" however you are at WORK. Act accordingly. The cleanliness of the facility has gotten better, but watch your step you may see Roacho and Rochella(Roaches) at their fellow friends funeral. Or Mickey and Minnie if you know what I mean...Overall, the building needs to be revamped its old outdated and needs to be remodeled.
Fantastic experience: It's fine, the staff is very nice and helpful.
Negative experience: I have been attempting to reach someone in charge regarding my aunt's care. Each person I spoke to (Janice & Rhea) claimed to not know the procedures regarding my request. I need answers right away. I am on my way there now. I wish to have my aunt removed from your facility before she ends up leaving in a body bag.
