Hampton VA Medical Center: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Lazy staffing department of dorms not not persistent entry dorm covid testing Staffing attend work sick stay home retested go covid and doctor note Keep germs spread through dorms and building some staff lazy on job
Negative experience: The absolute worst VA healthcare I have ever experienced. They can’t even coordinate the simplest tasks and somehow they always blame the patient for their incompetence. I have shown up for appointments and they literally cancel while I’m in the waiting room Doctors quitting, doctors fired, nothing but PA’s providing lousy healthcare. I could go on for a month about this hospital but it’s useless
Fantastic experience: I’ve had the privilege of visiting this practice several times, and the results have been nothing short of outstanding! Dr. Hutchins in Neurology is truly amazing—his expertise and care are unmatched. The team that ensured I didn’t have breast cancer and referred me to Suffolk Sentara was exceptional, as was the team they connected me with. Even when I tried to schedule an ENT appointment and none were available, their customer service was impeccable. They were patient, went above and beyond, and made every effort to accommodate me. The Mental Health team—a board of phenomenal women—were an absolute blessing. I had the pleasure of meeting with them virtually, and they truly heard my plea for assistance. They listened with compassion and delivered the help I desperately needed. I believe in treating people with kindness and respect, and this team exceeded every expectation. As a former Information Technician, I understand the value of great customer service, and this team exemplifies it in every way. My grandmother always said, “You catch more bees with honey,” and that principle never fails. Being patient, kind, and respectful has served me well, and it’s clear that those in the VA Medical center of Hampton I have met operate with those same values. Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish!
Fantastic experience: I have had a good experience here. I came to the VA originally 1995 since then it had come lessons and bounds. Once you are assigned a primary care physician it become a little easier to navigate. But don't let that fact keep you from coming and getting into the system for any healthcare needs. You have to be a pain in the a$$ as far as appointments, if need to be sooner, call to try to get cancelled appointments, follow up constantly, its your health. If they cannot see you/appointment within 30 days can possibly try for CBC community based care practitioner. Any of the minor issues i have had were quickly resolved. And nothing above and beyond what I wouldn't have at a civilian medical center. In fact, I have left some community care doctors to be treated by a VA DR FOR SURGICAL stuff. More experience, used to dealing with Vets and a lot of staff are vets themselves. Also i dealt with the veterans hospital in Lebanon PA, for a RET MC, and comparatively Hampton MC processes way, way better! If low reviews are bcuz you have not received service related benefits that is not necessarily the Medical Centers fault but more the Department of Vets Affairs. And all I can say is keep applying its a tedious process but keep submitting even when seen denied, could take 3 or more tries. Good luck and keep plugging.
Fantastic experience: I've been to several VA hospitals all over the country since 2008. I've literally had the best experience with one particular person here out of everyone Ive ever encountered. I just want to express my extreme gratitude to Jason Holland from Community Care. I have been at my wits end dealing with breast cancer and Sentara. He called me for a whole other reason, but he was more than happy and willing to help with any issues I have. I honestly cannot express in words how much better I feel after speaking with him. I feel like a weight has been lifted off me. I wasn't just another number on his list to call. He is exactly the type of person that should be working at the VA and taking care of veterans. A true gem. Thank you
Negative experience: The staff are completely incompetent. I went to go to the patient advocate and they declined to see me stating that they didn't patient complaints about Drs and that I need to call a 1800 number. Terrible waste of tax money and a an incredible disrespect to our veterans.
Negative experience: Useless coordination of care. Key departments asleep at the wheel and/or deliberately whitewash diagnoses and treatment to chronic problems. Constantly leave out important or accurate info in charts. Long waits on the phone. Impossible to receive coherent communication and info. Long waits for any appointment and resolving medical issues. Rinse/repeat the above process month to month and year to year. VA Hampton is a disturbing and very frustrating place to get care.
Negative experience: It should be no stars! This VETERAN HOSPITAL has selective membership. Only certain veterans get appointments. The rest of the veterans are treated like dirt. I had severe pain in my abdominal could not (not important enough) to be seen at Hampton VA. I went Hampton VA emergency room (twice) which I should have had a scheduled visit with in 72 hours. Nope! They just pumped me up with pain meds and sent me home. Went to the near by navy hospital. They found cyst and tumors in my abdominal area. Couldn’t help because I am not active duty - but sent file to Hampton VA they scheduled my appointment to be seen in a year. (women’s clinic). Not concerned with my health. Moved to Texas and had 2 surgeries at Houston VA. Look it up! It’s in my records.
Negative experience: Absolutely useless VA hospital. I'd rather go to the one in Richmond.
Negative experience: They honestly deserve no stars. The absolute worst VA I've experienced. You would think dealing with a community PCP would make things better, but it's the worst. If your PCP sends anything to the VA, they will pretend they either didn't get it or that your paperwork is wrong. They are so shady. God forbid you're going in for something life threatening. The Pharmacy is probably the only highlight of this place.
Negative experience: why can’t i just get on the phone and make an appointment…they use to tell you what number you were when u were on hold, now they just leave you on the phone. i literally looked at my phone and it said 43 minutes 18 seconds…
Fantastic experience: In & out scheduled appointment. Graceful, attentive respectful and very dedicated to their nursing and doctor skills and knowledge. Been coming to this VA Hospital/Medical Center for decades now, the service & personnel has only improved for the best!
Fantastic experience: Primary Care has always been excellent to me. Labs has a great efficient work flow, 1 day, they had 12 people in line. I was last. They got to me in about 20mins. That’s just under 2 mins per patient which is mighty impressive :)
Negative experience: An absolute crying shame this place. I have to physically come in to get an appointment, particularly Gastroenterology. I have sent message and no one answers the phone. ER is filled with riff raff- loud, obnoxious WORKERS!! - NOT the patients!!! Totally absurd.
Negative experience: The VA is absolutely terrible and I swear does medical negligence and malpractice! For chronic conditions that were developed while in military service- clearly documented - will NOT be supported by the VA even though they ‘say it’s covered’. It’s sad you have to fight for treatment! I’m not posting this not to go- I’m posting this to be prepared to FIGHT and DO NOT take NO as an answer. Keep escalating it. File complaints!!! If enough of us scream out that this is wrong- maybe we will get treatment!
Negative experience: In 2017 the US Congress passed a law enabling the VA to fire employees for poor performance. Apparently, Hampton VAMC has not heard of this law. Other than one good experience with the CPAP Clinic, I have no positive comments. Their phone system is atrocious, if you get a call answered, you are placed on hold for an average of 20 minutes and have about a 75% chance of being disconnected. If it wasn't so serious an issue, the Eye Clinic is a joke. You have to wait ONE YEAR to be seen by an optometrist. The Community Care department clearly doesn't care. Also it has been two weeks and I am still waiting for a return call from the Patient Advocate. A department which would not be needed if employees did their jobs! Calling the national VA "Customer Service" number is useless as they just refer you back to Hampton VAMC. For new claims you must be seen by a PCP in less than a year. There were no openings for Primary Care available at the Center, nor any available at the Cheaspeake or Elizabeth City clinics and it took eleven months to be seen by a Community Care approved PCP! Clearly, Hampton VAMC is aware of these and other issues and they do not care to correct them. They even blew off attending a recent Dare County, NC VA Town Hall Meeting which was well-attended by many Veterans who almost all had negative experiences with Hampton. Hampton VAMC should be ashamed of their "treatment" of our area's Veterans but, sadly, it appears they are not.
Negative experience: Today I went to the ER for my Torn Meniscus to be seen. I wasn't taken care of today even though I was recommended by one of the nurses from the hotline number. Upon arriving at the establishment I waited to be seen just to be turned away. I sat in that cold room without anyone speaking to about my injury for 35 minutes while listening to the staff talk about the NBA Playoffs and making jokes. I was turned away today because my recent MRI isn't in their system when I've already brought digital copies. The VA is incredibly disorganized & veterans shouldn't have to deal with this & I'm only 29 years old! TREAT US BETTER!
Negative experience: I got here at 10AM for difficulty breathing and pink eye. My Covid and strep test results were known to be negative around 11:30. At 12:30 the doc told me to sit tight for medication. I don’t understand this process. Why is this taking so long!
Positive experience: I have been going here for several years now. My care has been gotten better. I think the pharmacy is much better than it was and I hope that they continue to better their care here.
Fantastic experience: My nurses were excellent! I was treated w kindness, compassion, and dignity. I’m very thankful to the whole team that cared for me.
Fantastic experience: I’ll be honest here. I have no idea why their score is so low. The staff have been helpful and the nurses and doctors have been thorough in my care. They explain everything and run everything by me in a way I understand.
Negative experience: The VA do nothing! They don't know what to do, I wonder if there are any real doctors there, no labs work, not XRay, nothing!!! they just came to see my husband to prescribe Ibuprofen...
Positive experience: For the most part, I've had a good experience here. Some of the front desk clerks can come off a little rude. The doctors here, and I'm speaking about MY doctors are top grade.
Negative experience: I’m a 24 year retired Air Force veteran who has been receiving chiropractic care since 2019 for pain management of a chronic back issue. Recently I’ve been denied further treatment and to quote a nurse in the Paint Manager Department, “We’re not going to pay for it…” Well, my pain is more of a service issue than maternity, which our taxes pay for on a regular basis. I understand why so many veterans commit suicide if this is the type of treatment they receive. And I’m still in pain!
Negative experience: Just was on the phone for 30 minutes ( after trying 2 times before)trying to reschedule a appointment, got transferred 6 times to hear that Hampton VA can't do anything because my appointment is at the Chesapeake clinic and when they transfer me it goes to a mail box and hangs up. What a joke no number for Chesapeake clinic just for Hampton
Negative experience: This is the worst VA I have ever dealt with. The call center transfers people between multiple different agent in the call center and when you inquire as to why, they place you on hold mid sentence. I have also been trying to make an appointment with the Orthopedic department to follow up on test results for 3 months, but the call center transfers me around and I get a phone line that just rings non-stop. I have also had false appointments made for me that the call center says are in the system, then when I showed up at the doctor, I never had an appointment. So I basically took off work to show up to a non-existent appointment. I have visited 4 different VA Hospitals and this is the worst of all of them. Unbelievably bad!!!
Negative experience: Every time I come here or call in I have an issue. I called in today to community care and was told by a representative and the supervisor who rudely got on the phone to drive around in circles until I can find somewhere to do lab work because the VA will not do it. I was told the VA will not do my blood work although they are my primary care because they don’t want to be liable for the results. I was literally told I am a liability and being treated like a number with disrespectful customer service. This is causing me to have severe anxiety and I hope that I don’t go into depression. Thanks for your customer service Hampton VA! Absolutely ridiculous!
Negative experience: Hampton have the worse service there. It is very hard to get anything done. I talk to five peoples in the OT department and every one lied to me. They sent me to people to people. No one seem to know what their job is. Why is they working there, free money I guess. They need to close that place down and fire everyone.
Positive experience: Expect 30+ minute wait times, it is always best to just walk into your local VA clinic/hospital and just make appointments at each office in-person. I tried to compile a list of extensions: Community Care-14900 CC Dental-1172 Dental-3530 Eurology-13011 Optometry-1521, 1900 (VB), 25600, HA7500 Physical Therapy-2974 Primary Care-15293, 1900 (VB) Virginia Beach Clinic-1900 Privacy Officer - 13279
Negative experience: I have been going to the Hampton VA. now for awhile, from NC and they would pay travel, and my last 4 time i have been seen i haven't received any travel pay and I have find out the travel form each time. from 7/18/2023, 7/28/2023, 12/132023, 12/21/2023, 1/26/2024, Not sure why I haven't been paid yet.
Negative experience: Details around this VA (services, phone extensions) on the VA website are often incorrect. When attempting to call extensions (or being forward to extensions) often leads to endless ringing, numbers not in service, and voicemails not set-up.
Negative experience: When you have a mental health emergency on a holiday, the VA *tells you to go to the VA ER* and the *VA ER Doctor* chews you out for going there, you know you served your country. It's amazing how these people can actively, aggressively, not care.
Negative experience: This place is absolutely horrible. Wen’t in at 11pm, it’s now 4:15am and we are just getting out. We waited 3+ hours on just labs+x-ray, just to be told theres nothing wrong despite having the exact same symptoms when arriving. The ONLY decent thing about our visit was the nice female indian nurse(I didn’t get her name). We came here simply because we couldn’t afford the ER in elizabeth city. Lets just say I’d rather take out a loan than come here again.
Negative experience: First and foremost, I am a veteran that appreciates having a hospital, taking care of strictly veterans and their families. I have Saved on healthcare, and at one point a time that they save my life will operation. So I wanna make sure I get credit credit credit is dude. However, they time on which their workers take care of the patients is extremely slow and negligent. Came in at 4 PM just to see what type of sickness I had, and when I got my diagnosis, I still had to wait an extra two hours just to get my meds and that is ridiculous. I was literally having all types of pains, and I just wanted to get to bed but I couldn’t because I still had to wait for A simple paper. letting me know about the medicines I’m taking. Now I get they may be understaffed and overworked, and if that is case , then I do apologize. However, there needs to be some changes to Procedures, when it comes to taking care of In appropriate wait time, because, although I was at a Hospital, anything could’ve happened Going through what I was going through.
Negative experience: I've been trying for a week to get an out treatment referral to treatment for an important issue and I'm getting no response.
Positive experience: This post is an update After my last rant it’s come to my attention that changes In the customer service department has been made and that’s good because these veterans have health issues from service and we deserve a fair experience we do not ask for much. I can not speak much on the personal health care providers mostly because I found a more effective service from there night time staff in the ER department. Yes this is true I’m not sure if it’s the people or the fact that it’s not to many patients at night but my last few visits I made sure to show up and get my treatment from the night shift they haven’t let me down yet so I feel good to trust them in the future. Can the va improve yes I believe so but that depends on the culture and that starts at the top for myself I would hope they have every intent on veterans better interest and not something nefarious due to it being free healthcare. Hopefully things will improve if they haven’t already but I can say with confidence the night shift ER is my go to for issues
Negative experience: I'm currently waiting on the phone line (for over 1 hour now) to request for a dental appointment. This is ridiculous...I may as well go out in town and spend my money on an professional dentist. So sad to treat your disabled veterans this way. I should have known better.
Negative experience: VA outpatient community care is the WORST, most unprofessional, and abusive department at the VA. I’ve had a mental health referral given by the crisis center in Oct 23, and community care was supposed to put me with a provider. Except they haven’t and my attempt in coordinating with them has been massively triggering and abusive. They have a female named ms Stallin that claims she is a supervisor and abuses her position of power by being rude, refuses to help me (or even let me finish a sentence), makes unnecessary snide comments and remarks, gaslights me and even just hangs up. Her voice is happy and proud while insulting and mocking me - taking pleasure in humiliating me when I ask for help in getting assigned a provider. I also have 7 referrals that are a month old for debilitating conditions that still are not proceed - when I attempt to inquire if they have received them (I’m not even asking if they have been processed- just received…so at least I know they begin the unprecedented snail of a process which should be medical malpractice) - she gaslights me and hangs up. VA does not care for their vets- it’s terribly managed with toxic representatives and leaders.
Negative experience: They will create every barrier to healthcare possible to not serve their veterans. Veterans with cancer have died in the care of VA facilities for making their chemo appointment 4 months out. So neglectful! I’m now in the process of moving states to receive better healthcare because paying $4k+ for therapy when it’s supposed to be free is INSANE! MOST DISABLED VETS DO NOT WORK AND YOU ARE ROBBING THEM/US!
Negative experience: All clinics at this hospital are NOT open 27/7. Hampton VA , please post the correct operating times for your clinics. The information posted is misleading. I had to call the operator to get the actual opening time for the laboratory. Otherwise, I would have wasted valuable time driving to the hospital and having to wait.
Negative experience: I was told that my pain medication was not refillable by the e.r. doctors. I was further told that I would have to wait until morning to get my medication refilled by a different doctor. The nurse was very rude, and huffy. The only bright spot were the understanding police officers who escorted me off the premises, when I checked in and out the second and third time. I will be making my fourth trip over there when they open in the morning. I only broke into tears a few dozen times at home.
Negative experience: I just want to vent a little because the VA in Norfolk Virginia really let me down this year. I have endometriosis that gets worse each year. At the beginning of the year the women's clinic told me they were going to take it very seriously and that they would get me on the brand new surgeon's schedule as soon as she set it up. They then proceeded to FORGET ME COMPLETELY. They filled up her schedule until next year and didn't put me on it or even contact me. When I complained to the patient advocate the women's clinic just said oh well and put in a referral for community care instead of doing the right thing and moving people who are lower priority around. So I never did get seen by anyone. Now I've left the area and I'm hoping Florida can do a better job.... my quality of life has been going way downhill for a long time...
Fantastic experience: I see the reviews...but this was the best I've ever been treated, not only by the VA, but by any ER visit in general. ALL of the ER staff was attentative, knowledgable and it was refreshing to know that this level of care is still out there.
Negative experience: I am honestly disgusted by the way the personnel talks to people here. This is how you take care of and treat our veterans? What a shame an absolutely pathetic. Do better because this VA hospital is a disgrace.
Negative experience: The office of Community Care has to be the most incompetent group of individuals I've ever dealt with. It has taken two months just to get these people to fax a referral. When they finally did they sent it to a hospital 3 hours away again increasing the time for me to have imagining done. Due to this I have missed other important appointments which require the images prior to care. The entire office should lose their jobs.
Negative experience: This VA medical center is clearly bias against hispanics/latinos. They tend to favor servicing African Americans over any other race. The staff in the Prime 5 checkin office are rude and unprofessional. There's also a clear lack of diversity in that office and staff. The entire staff is African American only. The reviews here are self explanatory. If you're a reviewer here please write to your local state and federal congressman about this location. The blacks here are racists towards Hispanics..
Negative experience: If there was an ability to leave no stars, I would’ve. Incompetent doctors coupled with lazy staff who aren’t really interested in helping anyone.
Negative experience: Extremely rude. My father served 16 years honorably went to ask for benefits for my mother since my dads claim hadn’t been fully processed before he passed of a heart attack in September. 16 years and awarded the Bronze Star. Never complained about nothing. When the lady called me back she asked me some questions I told her and she kept stumbling on words (she wasn’t paying attention to what I was saying) and put me on hold. Came back and said that the va doesn’t do anything for veterans who weren’t collecting any benefits. Crazy rude and horrible experience. I’m also a veteran and I’m glad I don’t live in Virginia and deal with that horrible VA. This is despicable and I can finally see why veterans don’t like going to va facilities. What a horrible experience
Negative experience: I have been trying to call about a glucometer and all I get is the run around and hung up on. Not very helpful if you ask me. Get very frustrating when you are told you will take an inperson class to learn how to use the glucometer and get your device and supplies at that class, then they call and set up a video call for this class but the person setting up the video call can help you figure out how to get your stuff. So you call and get bounced around that it's not my department.
Negative experience: Place is an oversized urgent care. An absolute joke and will take you 1-2 months to get any type of imaging except for x-ray. Unfortunately having to deal with them now, thought I was done being stuck with poor healthcare when my navy enlistment ended but no, now that I am cared for at the Hampton VA medical center my problems have only just begun. Very disappointed in how they treat military and veterans here, has to be one of the most flawed healthcare systems in the country. Very sad.
Fantastic experience: Everytime I go, I have a great experience. Always friendly and helpful staff. I know that the VA has a bad rap but this VA center has been nothing but good!
Fantastic experience: I have utilized the emergency room three times in the last three years, and I must admit it runs more efficiently than any active duty hospital I have ever been too. Considering the amount of traffic this hospital is accountable for I'd say that for free health care they deserve six stars! The parking is pretty limited, but as long as you account for it there is really no reason to hold it against the facility.
Fantastic experience: Been going since 1993. Never had problem with staff or doctors. Had a few appointments postponed but no big deal. Parking is bad.
Fantastic experience: Just got off the phone with Albee, a very cheerful, accommodating, and courteous receptionists, who established great rapport in assisting me with the necessary procedures to obtain an appointment through the Va Hospital. Heavenly Father continue to bless me.
Positive experience: I took a family friend who was visiting from West Virginia to the ER for an unexpected health problem. The staff was extraordinarily nice, helpful, willing to go the extra mile, patient, and efficient. He had to get a CT, which happened quickly. The radiologist took a bit of time to read the study so we were there longer than anticipated, however, this was of no fault to the ER itself. We are very thankful for their care.
Negative experience: Good staff, broken system. I could write a book on the mishandling of instances I've experienced in less then 2 years but it comes down to a broken system. Recently broke my wrist, went into an in network urgent care facility, x-rays, splints etc. I message my PCP and it takes them SIX days to message me back and tell me that I need to come in and get more x-rays before I can be seen. No thanks, I already bought a brace off of Amazon and I'll deal with it myself. You have to sift through and endless call system just to get someone who doesn't know the answer or won't pick up. Half the staff are great and do everything they can, the other half couldn't care less and try to get out of work. They're dealing with their budget being cut so if that bothers you, vote accordingly.
Fantastic experience: I had a beautiful experience at Hampton VA Medical Center today. I had my first colonoscopy at the Gastroenterology Department, and I say Bravo Zulu to the entire staff and team. It is worth sharing the work demonstrated and the entire professionalism from all the nurses, specifically the lady who called 2 days prior to the procedure to remind me of required procedures and what to expect. That was excellent communication. Notably Nurse Maila, Doctor Pre...... Nurse Jennifer and the anesteologists. The entire team was warm and friendly. I have great appreciation for the hard work you all do, and I want to humbly say many thanks for your service and dedication. Your combined efforts were really appreciated, and I say special thanks to the personnel who prepared the rooms and made them nice and clean for us all. I appreciate the top to bottom leadership and attention to detail to all the small but definitely not insignificant things. Once again, many thanks for keeping us holistically well. You all made my fears manageable and seamless. Once again, Bravo Zulu, for the heavy lifting you do on a daily basis, and you make it seem relatively simple. Expertly, you commanded your area of responsibility with ease and enthusiasm. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: I wanted to share with you my concierge medical experience at the Hampton VA Hospital yesterday. However, trying to acquire an appointment there was painful. Too many patients with anemic staffing to carry the workload. I decided to travel some 30 miles plus to show up in person to be appointed for my request. This was with great consternation with 2 employees from the rehab department. Finally they relented and provided me with a somewhat satisfactory phone video visit. All of this was over obtaining a new scooter, important for my increased mobility. I have neurological condition causing great difficulty to ambulate more than 100 steps and causing me to have poor balance. My current scooter has been in Charlie Status quite a few times with no contingency available. I’m here to express my overwhelming gratitude to Alyscia, staff Occupational Therapist working in the hospital rehab department. Knowing my situation, she double booked an appointment time to squeeze me in. I also am thankful she was able to provide the most attentive, professional, collegial and quality service during my visit. This type of medical care I define as concierge medicine. I was able to obtain a new scooter, by far an improved quality scooter over the my last one. She then fitted me with a custom lightweight folding wheelchair for a just in case breakdown contingency, God forbid. I will receive my wheelchair in about 2 months. This chair is effortless to push for my wife and easy for me to wheel with my hands. I’m extremely happy with the VA’s quality service provided by their employees and quality equipment. I also want to offer a glowing praise to the wheelchair repair shop employees for their contribution in providing great patient service. I feel iindebted to the VA for my exceptional care and service they have provided me. God Bless all the employees for the care they provide for all our Veterans!
Fantastic experience: The VA doesn’t have the resources it should, but in my experience the staff is amiable and does their best. Update after 4 years: things have improved over time. I've received quality care here despite some wait times (which are to be expected).
Fantastic experience: The Hampton VA Hospital has saved me more than once. This is the best VA Hospital by fare.
Fantastic experience: I'm always able to find parking and the facility is very clean and wait times for me have been minimal and very reasonable.
Negative experience: Mismanagement of funds. Effects every veteran needing a procedure this time of the year. How many other veterans are being denied services. Because your out of money. Till congress passes the appropriation bill?
Negative experience: ER is the worse. Some staff kinda dry and don't have manners. Kinda dirty in here too. Not really the quality of care I expect for my father.
Fantastic experience: Hampton VA Emergency Department (5 Star Service) I was seen at this location this past Sunday morning and I had my reservations about being seen at any VA Hospital. Despite my hesitancy, Dr. Dews and his team eliminated every doubt. His bedside manner and diagnosis made all the difference in treating my pain. I felt 100% better from the time I walked in. Ms. Rachel and discharge nurse both were a pleasure and I can tell they love what they do. Thank you all again for your service and servicing our Veterans. Highly recommend this location and staff if in need of treatment.
Positive experience: I have been coming to this VA for about 6 years and I've only had one bad experience. Most of the workers are nice. The providers are overall very good and caring. I did have one bad experience with a rude provider. I was admitted for a few days and the nursing staff was top notch. The only bad thing I can say is the waiting times for appointments and community care can be long.
Positive experience: Staff does their best with the resources available to them. The lack of funding is not on them, the staff works very hard to service all Veterans in the area and provide good care.
Negative experience: I had to have test done on the 2nd floor, nuclear med, the girls at front desk were very rude, more interested in sitting there scratching their heads, bad attitudes, I understand they do this every day, but the patient does not, show respect for the patient. The professionals in the back who actually were working did an excellent job. Do a better job ladies, remember who you represent. We as veterans have earned this right. And as for the rest of the hospital, for the love of God, get the phone system working, I have had heart monitors canceled because you can’t get through to me from your phones, I asked you to call my wife’s phone, and was told “don’t know if that can be changed “. I have been waiting for the VA rep to contact me, no word from him either. Is it the phones ? Getting really frustrated !!!
Fantastic experience: Ms Yvonne Bailey is wonderful.
Fantastic experience: Excellent doctors and nursing staff. They go above and beyond to make sure you're taken care of and have everything you need.
Negative experience: I will give a O if I could . My husband has been waiting for 5 months for his first appointment to be evaluated for sleep apnea among other things and the coordinator assign to him told him he was assigned to Chesapeake and no one call then he try to call and finally got someone on the phone and they were like oh you don’t appear to assigned anywhere . So I email someone sort of important gave me a phone number of Mr Clark and no response we going into 6 month…. This is an embarrassing
Negative experience: Slipped or obliterated a disk in my back and want to get an x-ray. The front desk tells me at least a 4 hour wait. Considering I drove 1.5 hours here, I decided to wait. 3.5 hours pass, I ask the front desk a rough ETA and the guy tells me around 4 hours. You can't make this up. What's worse is the people waiting longer than me. For the love of God, it's 8pm, get more doctors working here. Christ
Fantastic experience: The best possible treatment and professionals. A crown jewel.
Negative experience: Blood work today at Hampton VA Medical center was Excellent. For the first time in my five years of going to this VA, I was treated like I mattered. Thank you to all who work in the lab. I couldn't give the VA 5 stars because only the Lab has improved. I hope to be impressed when I go to my appointment next week. I doubt it but so hopeful. Thank you Lab staff!
Negative experience: This VA hospital is the absolute worst VA hospital I have ever experienced. Before I give details of the horrible experience I would like to say that a nurse Rob is amazing. There was an amazing young nurse with her hair in a ponytail with bluish glasses. She was phenomenal. They truly cared about their patients and a man at the front desk, wears a golf hat is absolutely phenomenal. Those nurses and gentlemen at the front desk looked high and low for thr patients items. This hospital lost personal items even after I initialed them and took photos. They tried to blame us! When they were shown them the photos they started coming up with all different stories. After being there for almost 4 hours the clothes that were missing miraculously appeard. The medication list I made went missing then reappeard a week later in the bag! The patients charger was lost. They lost the patients teeth! They were removed due to him becoming combative after trying to bite an employee. Then they said they had never seen them. They said we could fill out a claim form. We have been trying to get ahold of the person who has the form for two weeks and they somehow are never there or busy. We even went down when she was supposed to be there. Traveling 45 minutes each way all the sudden she wasnt there. Ifound dirty cotton swabs with blood on them when the patient was moved to a different room. So they were not his! Please do not let your loved one be taken to this hospital. It wasnt just one issue that I would understand accidents happen. This was a nightmare.!
Negative experience: Just tried calling to schedule an appt. For my initial visit. Had to be transferred 3 times to talk to someone that could help, and person I talked to was rude. Sounded like she had better things to do than talk to me and every time I asked a question, she gave me attitude “…like I said…” Not friendly at all. Not looking forward to my visit, but figure I’ll give it a chance before going elsewhere for care.
Fantastic experience: My doctors are great at this location. The parking isn't that bad. If you get there earlier for your appt, you can get a parking spot. Just have to be patient. There are a lot of Veterans in the Hampton Roads area.
Fantastic experience: They got me in at 6:30 for a 7am appt. They finished by 7am. The staff was courteous and professional. The Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center has really come a long way. It's pretty good now. I am so glad to have them now. Quality of care is outstanding.
Fantastic experience: HVAMC does have some people that care and listen to you.
Negative experience: If you try to call a department no one will answer or they will just pick up and hang up. It took me three days and 27 phone calls to make an optometry appointment. I tried to complain through the patient advocate system two months ago and of course they haven’t called me back. I live 65 miles away and I volunteered to go there to save my country money. Now I’m going to refuse to go and I’m gonna go To the health professionals here locally. Only go there if you absolutely have to!
Negative experience: Worst medical facility hands down. Doctors will have scheduled phone appointments and not call. Log it as you didn't answer. Say they leave voicemails and magically no voicemail ever comes through. But when you explain this to them they say oh sorry the doctor is booked the rest of the (insert foreseeable future). The care they give to our veterans is appalling. This is a prime example why the VA system is failing! Do better VA! Do better for the people who have fought and risked their lives for this country.
Negative experience: I am so disapointed with the Hampton VA, They ask you to call and the only thing you get is a recording, talking about world class service, where is it at? I really don't think to much of this place.
Negative experience: This place is a circus without a Ring Leader! I had to use this location for my Healthcare for over 20 years. The medical staff are horrible with the exception of a few. I see people spend their days walking around and talking and not doing any actual work, and it's always the same people. I had surgery and 9 months later, still not scheduled for PT. After 5 years and 9 submitted requests, they finally transferred me out. When I spoke to someone on the phone it was found that only One of the 9 requests were actually filed. It's my opinion that 90% of the staff need to be fired and replaced with people who want to actually work and work without an attitude. The waits are long and the lobby is crowded. I have had to wait 3 hours just to get blood drawn.
Fantastic experience: I have been receiving extraordinary care for the last SIX months ! I have absolutely zero complaints and the only thing that I can say with regard to room for improvement is the parking situation. The staff always exhibits a caring and respectful attitude. I am very glad to have the opportunity to be cared for by the awesome people at the Hampton VA Medical Hospital staff.
Negative experience: Terrible or more terrible, this place really has a lot of people that hate veterans. A few weeks later again a bad experience, I don’t even know why I even report it, even the White House doesn’t care about complaints of this place.
Fantastic experience: My initial visit was Surprising and challenging. But after they pulled some of the weeds. The environment is much friendlier. Don't let a couple bad apples ruin the bunch of your experience. REACH OUT to the proper people, if someone is not acting right (HR). The doctors care and my RECENT experience with the rest of the staff has been pleasant. Iron Spine

Negative experience: This place is ridiculous. I emailed nykika burkes, my paperwork for her to sign off in order for me to attend school. I informed this worthless individual that I needed the paperwork no later than Oct 5th. This worthless individual scheduled me an appointment for Nov 4th. The paperwork is a basic education certification form. It doesn't require any medical condition to be noted. She is just pitiful and spiteful to any veteran in her care. This is just awful and ridiculous. I emailed this lousy human my paperwork more than a week ago. She was given ample time to sign my paperwork so it can be returned to the school, but instead she chooses to conduct a phone conversation with me scheduled for a month past the deadline to return the paperwork. She's a horrible individual that has absolutely no compassion nor consideration for the veterans in her care. This facility needs to be closed or placed under a new director. Wavy news 10 investigation team needs to conduct an interview with this terrible facility. This facility is not there for the veterans. It's there in order for the director to collect $$and place in his pockets and the rest of the individuals to get a paycheck. They're worthless to the veterans they serve and NNYKIKA BURKES is below worthless.
Positive experience: My visit to the Hampton VA Emergency was both good and bad today. They were pretty quick when it came to getting my vitals and putting me in a room. I was asked to do a urine sample and came back in the room awkwardly. The doctor was sitting there with no uniform, scrubs, or coat so I thought he was a random person. Then he said "okay, tell me a sad story". It was a very weird way of asking what brought me to the ER. After the tests were done, I had a fairly quick discharge. The nurse asked if I had any questions. I did and asked them. He answered but then blamed my generation for my diagnosis. I was already feeling bad for even being in the ER, he didn't have to say that. I was very confused by both the doctor's and nurse's bedside manners.
Positive experience: The care in the specialty care departments if very good once you receive an appointment. However, the wait times are so long. I waited 11 months to see a psychiatrist (Getting shuffled between providers etc. ) I tore my meniscus in June and was told they could fit me in for surgery in January! Primary care is overloaded with patients and they do the best they can. However, it is a challenge to get anything addressed between the every 6 month visits, I have had many, many poor experiences with the ER staff on day shift. The night shift treats us like human beings.

Negative experience: It is very hard to reach The Office of Community Care. I just spent almost two hours trying to get through and after being on hold for forty-five minutes both times it just hangs up on me. I'm not usually a mean person, but this is starting to get to me. I'm thinking that maybe the VA should add a callback feature so you don't have to wait over a hour to get through. IJS
Negative experience: Worst place ever. They need to fire staff and hire whose that care for our veterans. My husband who's got stage 4 cancer was not only spoken to extremely rude but they hung up on him. How dare they. If I had the womans name I'd have her job. This is absolutely unacceptable especially when you're dealing with people's lives
Negative experience: I know that there are people at this place that genuinely care about the veterans, but majority of them are really there just for the paycheck. The phone staff acts as if you've ruined their day for making them do their job, there's no real customer service etiquette (in person or on the phone) and good luck trying to set an appointment after being on hold for 28 minutes.
Negative experience: People are helpful, but hindered. The logistics are horrible. There is no service to transport elderly vets between departments. Not even readily available wheelchairs. Also, been trying to make an appointment with the audiology department for days, they never answer their phone. I let it ring for 10 minutes.
Fantastic experience: They saved my life, cured my cancer, looked inside my heart, did surgery, did countless imaging, treatments & testing, all with compassion. If anything was out of their scope, I was sent to specialists and they paid for it. I rarely had to wait but look what I have gotten, I would & will gladly wait. If something happens to the VA we have nothing. I am not a doctor, or licensed or certified anything. I'm just a veteran patient. I just did 2021 reports for a very well run practice. The average pay to the clinic from insurance was 97.73 per patient hr. That is supposed to pay 3 providers, 1 doctor, 4 staff, and guess who? staff to handle insurance claims. Insurance doesn't pay toward building or maintenance, equipment, grounds, not even medical equipment or supplies, and on and on. Now that 94% of the population is insured, that is the only money that comes into a clinic. And a mandatory EHR that cost $6000 a month to use to make life easier for the insurance industry. They make patients believe doctors are greedy and you need to be saved from them. Then they take your money, refuse to approve meds and procedures your doctor knows you need, then pays the doctor pennies. A doctors reward has been knowing they saved or improved a patients health and life. Now they have to cut corners with their patients care AND not get paid. There no longer is any reward. So they are closing up shop all across the nation. This doctor mentioned above was working 3 jobs trying to make enough payroll and not let the community she fell in love with, go without medical care until she just could not continue working 30 hr shifts w 6 hr breaks any longer. My well driller just charged me $1000 an hour to drill in sand 30 feet, the surveyor just charged me slightly over that. Since when should a well driller or surveyor make 10 times more than anyone with 3 masters? I want them to make $1000 an hour, but the honorable compassionate professional that saves my and my families life and follows my health my whole life should be making $4000 an hour for a clinic to help pay back the 2.5 ml she owes in education loans and decent life saving equipment. All, and I do mean all of the private family clinics and private specialists everywhere in the USA are being driven to close down by insurances. DID NO ONE NOTICE THIS! I had no idea how or why this could have been allowed to happen. MY POINT, LOVE YOUR VA. AT LEAST SAY THANKS
Fantastic experience: The Women's Center, particularly Dr. E. Gasink, has been amazing with my care. She takes my concerns and questions seriously and genuinely cares; always going above and beyond to be sure that all my issues have been addressed.
Fantastic experience: Always prompt, courteous and helpful. I believe people that are complaining have not been to a civilian hospital in a very long time. EXCELLENT service for the last 8 years!
Fantastic experience: Spoke to Prosthetic's at the Hampton, VA, Virginia Veterans affairs! Mr.Harris. I have been trying to get my husband a Rolator for months and I spoke to Mr. Harris this morning and we will be getting his Rolator TOMORROW!! Mr. Harris thank you so much for helping me today.. You embody how to take care of the Veterans!!! Thank you
Fantastic experience: I miss this VA. Recently moved to Albany NY area and realized how good the HVAMC actually is because the Albany VA couldn’t care less about veterans. My doctors in Hampton were professional and compassionate. I didn’t have to wait months for an appointment or call a provider multiple times to get an appointment. If I had questions about my care, I was listened to and provided with the information needed to make informed decisions about my care. I was a valued patient and not a number. The facility was clean and well maintained. Staff was friendly at every level and patient advocates were very responsive if there was an issue that needed resolving. I seriously would go back to this facility in a heartbeat.
Fantastic experience: As long as you are patient, I've had nothing but compassionate Drs and staff. It is understaffed but that is not their fault. I usually spend about the same wait time if i went to other facility's. Someone gave this place a 1 star because they didnt like their coffee......? Its not a starbucks.....its a hospital.
