Focused Care at Summer Place: Reviews
Negative experience: I am writing to share my experience regarding my grandmother’s recent stay at your rehabilitation facility. While we are grateful for the few dedicated staff members who demonstrated genuine care during her time there, there were several issues that we found deeply concerning and feel compelled to bring to your attention. Upon our arrival, we were not properly acknowledged or greeted. The front desk staff member appeared disengaged, occupied with her iPad, and did not inquire about our purpose for visiting or whom we had come to see. At the same time, a housekeeping staff member was mopping the entryway around 10 a.m. Although a caution sign was in place, wet floors during high-traffic morning hours could present a significant safety risk—especially for elderly patients or visitors who may have mobility or balance challenges. As we walked to my grandmother’s room, I noticed that full patient names were visibly displayed outside the rooms, which raises serious concerns regarding HIPAA compliance and patient privacy. Even more troubling was that several patient room doors were open, and patients were exposed in a way that compromised their dignity and privacy. When we arrived at my grandmother’s room, she informed us that no staff had checked in on her since her arrival. I want to clarify that my grandmother is fully mentally alert and aware. When we asked why she hadn’t used her call light, she said she had—multiple times—but after waiting for hours with no response, she simply turned it off in frustration. The linens provided for her bed were also stained, which is unacceptable by any standard of care. A nurse eventually came in to speak with us; while he was courteous, it became evident that my grandmother had not yet been fully admitted, and there was limited information available regarding her care plan. This left us questioning the level of care she had been receiving up to that point, and whether she was truly being attended to or simply occupying a bed for billing purposes. Later, I overheard my grandmother’s name being mentioned at the nurses’ station. When I asked if there was any concern or if something was needed, the response I received was unprofessional and dismissive—certainly not the standard of communication or respect one should expect in a healthcare setting. While one might ask why we didn’t remove her immediately, we were informed that insurance approval for a transfer would take time, and space at other facilities would be subject to availability. Now that her stay is coming to an end, we are thankful for the handful of staff members who did their best under the circumstances. However, I would strongly recommend that any families considering this facility for short- or long-term care take the time to personally visit and observe the environment before making a decision.

Negative experience: Absolutely awful place. If you look at the reviews, all of the good ones are about the work environment and all the bad are about the actual care of the residents. They have no care or compassion about their residents or the ones that care about them. They deem residents fit when they are obviously not safe to be left alone roaming around beaumont and keep no track of when residents leave and when they are expected to be back, putting them all in incredibly dangerous positions when they are meant to be looked after by the people at this home. I wouldn't trust this place with a pet rock, much less a loved one. If you care about the person you're placing in a home, PLEASE choose somewhere else for their safety and quality of life.

Negative experience: We found a lady stranded outside in the heat near Dillards. She belonged to this nursing home and we called the nursing home and they were absolutely horrible. These people deserve to get sued for all they’re worth. They said they didn’t keep record of when people came and left and that’s why they didn’t know she was stranded. We found her stuck on a curb in her wheelchair. Her legs were burnt and she had a visible diaper and catheter in. It was absolutely horrendous. EMS and Cops were called and the situation was taken care of regardless of how uncaring this facility is. I really hope they get what they deserve. The person on the phone was “Jana”. And she was uncaring about this resident and didn’t care that she was out in a sunny parking lot and dehydrated. Please don’t put any of your loved ones in this facility unless you want to find them in deplorable condition in a hot parking lot.

Positive experience: Good and bad. They don't have enough help here for all the people that are here.
Negative experience: My mom died in that facility 6 years ago. And the days leading up to her death, the staff there are slow. I feel like they're the reason my mom died. They let my mom sit in pain for 2hrs before they came to check her out. Some of the staff had attitude problems. I took care of my mom better than them while she was there. They couldn't tell my mom had a touch of dementia before she died, they just told me that was a reaction to the medicine they gave her for nausea. I had left and went to church and when I had gotten back, she told one of her nurses had an attitude with her and was rude to her. They let her go 30 minutes without oxygen. Within them 30 minutes she died, right in front of me. They better be glad that I was too distraught to sue them for my mother's death. I felt like they intentionally lost the key to the oxygen room, just for my mother to pass away. Til this day, I can't see my mom, I can't hug and kiss my mom, I can't even call my mom on the phone. I'm still traumatized by my mom's passing. My fiance has to calm me down after every breakdown. I miss my mom so much. I just finished crying and my fiance had to hold me. Every once and awhile I have a breakdown. She died before I can turn 30. I was just 27 at that time.

Fantastic experience: My mother has been at this facility since March 2020 (a week before lockdown), and I can't say enough wonderful things. The staff, nurses, CNA's, therapists, etc., have been a blessing to my mother and my family. I truly feel my mom is loved and cared for by everyone at FCSP!!
Negative experience: This place is horrible and very unprofessional. I’m a RN. I tried calling to check on a patient and they put me on hold for 10 mins at the nurses station. I hang up and call back and explain what happened. She puts me on hold without saying a word. I stay on for about 5 mins with no one answering the phone. I hang up and call back. They must’ve recognized my number because she picked up the phone and hung up immediately. They’re very unprofessional. I wouldn’t let them look after my dog. And I never did talk to anyone.
Negative experience: Negligent. No compassion. Do not use this facility. They will not take care of your loved ones and a strong possibility your loved ones will be worse off after spending any amount of time here.
Fantastic experience: My dad has been a resident for over 5 years. While the nursing home industry has been challenged due to the Pandemic, Focus Care has provided my dad exceptional care through it all. Their Administration, Nursing Staff, Therapy Dept, Housekeeping, Dietary & Laundry Staff are always ready & willing to address any concerns I have.
Negative experience: Lousy nursing care! Almost killed my Aunt by neglect. I do not recommend. Litigation pending.

Fantastic experience: The activities coordinator just organized light make overs for selected residence and it turned out great there was photos taken. Also I witnessed the new management purchasing cupcakes and having food catered on weekends super nice . They previous nursing home staffed medical transportation for my moms eye surgeries and for my mom to attend several funerals for her siblings. I had some run ins but way more good things to say then bad. They do there best.
