Root Cause Medical Clinic

Positive experience: In November 2022 I started experiencing gut pain. I went to my primary care physician and she had me do a series of tests including abdominal ultrasound, vaginal ultrasound, CT scan and referral to gastroenterologist. The CT scan revealed a small hiatal hernia and evidence of GERD. The gastroenterologist nurse practitioner also prescribed PPI and I ended up taking them for 4 months!! I then saw an integrative medicine physician who did some stool testing and had me taking some gut healing supplements which actually worked. However , the manufacturer quit making that particular supplement and then my gut issues came back. I also was tested for H Pylori with 3 different tests and all were negative. The integrative medicine doctor who actually specializes in PRP treatments ( not really gut health) did mention to me that even as small as a hiatal hernia could be he remembered studying them in his training and was surprised that a hiatal hernia could cause so many different problems. So I decided to explore on my own what issues hiatal hernia could cause and stumbled on to Dr. Vikki and Dr. Rick’s book, Hiatal Hernia Syndrom. I got it and read it. I was so amazed that all the symptoms I was experiencing such as shortness of breath, heart palpitations, anxiety and more were direct issues caused by hiatal hernia. I called Root Cause Medical Clinic and spoke to Dr. Vikki and Dr. Rick and decided to enroll in their Hiatal Hernia program. I worked with Dr. Jake and Dr. Jen as well as Dr. Rick. I had all the lab work done they suggested. My lab verified I did not have H Pylori which I did have in 2008. And the wheat test revealed I was highly sensitive to gluten. So Dr. Jen guided me on the elimination diet and Dr. Jake had me doing all the exercises to strengthen my diaphragm. They helped immensely with my symptoms. And once I was off gluten for 6 weeks I had some other chronic issues clear up. I finished my program with improved health and continue to heal my gut. I’m very thankful at all those at Root Cause Clinic for the improvements I’ve had. I would definitely recommend their services to any one experiencing any health issues. They will definitely get to the Root Cause! And the staff and others at the clinic are very helpful every step of the way. My treatments were through their telemedicine process since I live 2400 miles away from the clinic.

Fantastic experience: It is my profound wish to thank the staff of Root Cause Medical Clinic for their excellent care! I was diagnosed with chronic gastritis the end of April this year. The traditional doctors prescribed various PPI’s for acid reflux which offered little relief. Being very frustrated after weeks of getting nowhere, I began researching YouTube videos in an effort to find medical care that would get to the bottom of the symptoms I was experiencing and would offer treatment in a holistic manner. These worrisome symptoms included severe stomach pain after every meal, weight loss, as well as issues surrounding a hiatal hernia. My inclination led me to believe that an overuse of antibiotics had destroyed my gut microbiome even though the doctors who had prescribed the antibiotics rejected the suggestion out right. Fortunately, in my desperation I came across some of Dr. Vikki Petersen’s videos posted on YouTube. I watched everyone I could, shortly after calling the clinic seeking assistance. The very name Root Cause Medical Clinic caught my attention! Needless to say, suffering to the degree I was, I was highly motivated to follow the recommended treatment program of Dr. Vikki & Dr. Richard Petersen. After extensive blood work it was discovered that I had both an h-pylori & e. coli bacterial infection and a sensitivity to gluten. Traditional doctors told me I didn’t have an h-pylori infection, never tested for other infections and a celiac test confirmed I didn’t suffer from that disease, so my thinking was that I had no need to avoid gluten. Root Cause began a recommended regiment of supplements to address the stomach symptoms-NO antibiotics! Dietician, Jennifer Dufala started me on the elimination diet and sound dietary education. Physical therapist, Dr. Jacob Johnson, added to my treatment program assisting with a variety of stretches to address the hiatal hernia. Everything was done methodically and gradually. Slowly and almost imperceptibly I began to feel better. I mentioned to Dr. Richard Petersen how amazed I was that my health was improving while hardly being cognizant of it! How thankful I am to every team member of Root Cause Medical Clinic; all the staff was kind and helpful! From the bottom of my heart, I thank them for their professional and astute medical care! They truly worked diligently to get to the root cause of my condition and tailored a holistic treatment program for my condition! God bless you all!

Fantastic experience: I really do wish I could give 10 Stars. I can honestly say that I've gotten so much needed help from this place. One of the things I appreciate the most is that they actually listen to you. They listen to you and they do their best to address every issue that you have. Fantastic experience: I am a current patient of the clinic and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. I'm on my 5th week and the changes in my health have exceeded my expectations. Before finding them I had been suffering for a period of almost 5 years, going in and out of the ER on multiple occasions, very painful intestinal pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, reflux, not to mention fatigue and being overweight. During this period I changed gastroenterologists on 3 occasions, colonoscopies, endoscopies only to be sent home with a variety of medications to control the symptoms without investigating the reason for my discomfort. Fantastic experience: On the night of April 26th, 2024, my wife and I finished packing our luggage. We had been planning this dream vacation for years, from before the Covid lockdowns. We were scheduled to fly out on Saturday, April 27th. We were going to spend three weeks in England, Ireland and Paris; this would be my wife’s first ever trip to Europe. But the night we finished packing I came down with the worst stomach pain I’ve ever experienced. It was so bad that at 11pm on April 26th I had to cancel our dream trip. Not only was I feeling sick physically but also emotionally because I was forced to cancel my wife’s dream vacation; I felt like the worst husband in the world! What I had caused me to be out of work for four weeks. At one point I ended up in the ER with a 103 degree fever. My body was completely shot. I couldn’t eat anything. I wasn’t even able to walk around my block without feeling sick; I walk for a living, usually six miles per day. I lost weight because I couldn’t eat. I lost muscle mass because I couldn’t work out. My body was a mess. In my family there’s history of stomach and colon cancer so I thought that maybe I was next. I had visited an IG before but all they did was put me on PPI’s but I wasn’t satisfied with being on drugs for the rest of my life. I searched and searched online trying to find what was wrong with me until on YouTube I found a video featuring Dr. Vicky Peterson. In the video she said to contact Root Cause Medical Clinic in Florida and so I did even though I’m in California. I didn’t know if this was going to be a scam or real but I was desperate. It’s been six months since I first contacted Root Cause Medical Clinic and all I can say is this, they have been a blessing to my life! Because of their program and treatment I learned that I’m gluten sensitive. Gluten was causing me to be deficient in vitamin D, B12, Iron and others that the body requires to be healthy. Gluten caused growth of bad bacteria in my gut as well as allowing a virus to over take my gut. My gut was so unhealthy that it couldn’t fight anymore against the bacteria and the virus. All this because of gluten! I was also experiencing shortness of breath and heart palpitations often. I’m so thankful for Root Cause Medical Clinic; Dr. Vicky, Dr. Rick Peterson who is my main doctor, Dr. Jakobson who is my physical therapist, Dr. Dufala is my nutritionist, and Leslie at the front desk. They have been my support team these past six months and I don’t know where I’d be without them. Since I started the program I’ve lost 25lbs just from learning to eat different. I’m still in the process of healing completely but I’d say I’m 95% better. I’m doing so good that my wife and I were able to take our vacation. We began our journey on September 24th, 2024 and just recently returned. We were gone for twenty days and I was able to enjoy our vacation to its fullest; my stomach held up during the trip. Fantastic experience: The Root Cause Medical Clinic team has been outstanding! I had experienced pain, stiffness, severe GERD, heart palpitations and shortness of breath for several years. Multiple doctor appointments and many expensive tests later, I was told I was basically healthy and given prescriptions that would "help". Not a single physician suggested we dive into WHY these things were happening. Cue the team of Dr. Beth, Dr. Jacob, Dr. Vikki and RD Vanessa!! I feel like you should all be wearing super hero capes! Through targeted testing and appointments with my team, I now understand why these symptoms were happening to me and what needs to be done to fix them. What a breath of fresh air! I have a 90% reduction in pain and stiffness. My heart palpitations have disappeared along with my shortness of breath. I am back to enjoying walks with my husband and I can even bend down to paint my own toenails! I cannot say enough about this wonderful team of individuals who listen, respond and care about the health and well being of their patients.

Positive experience: I had an appt with Dr Vickie and that was very informative. I then set up an appt with Dr Beth. I changed my mind when i thought about starting a treatment without the benefit of chiropractic care as i live across the country. My credit card was charge $595 for an hour of an appt with Dr Beth even though i had cancelled appt days before the appt was scheduled to occur. The amount was never credited. I had to call and it will take 3 to 4 weeks to credit the card. I find that a bit disconcerting. I'm sure the treatments are very helpful but not too happy about their financial policies.

Fantastic experience: I learned about Root Cause on YouTube when I was in the midst of a health crisis last year. It was a case of food poisoning that set off the most bizarre and terrifying symptoms over the course of the next 6 months, from crippling depression to chronic stomach issues, as well as breathing issues and heart palpitations. My stomach was bloated and constantly distended. I couldn’t get a deep breath because the pressure in my abdomen was literally hindering my diaphragm from opening all the way. The depression was almost unbearable, even though I had really never been depressed before. In the mornings I would get lightning like sensations in my stomach upon waking. I could do nothing that demanded any physical effort because my breathing issues would flare up and become terrifying, causing me to go back to an ER that had no answers for me. I spent most of my days in bed, reading people’s symptoms on Reddit and continuing to try and find answers. I was 38 years old with 2 kids under age 4, and my job at the time was to be a stay at home dad. Everything in my life was unbearable. I went to the ER a dozen times. I had an upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy, neither of which revealed anything significant. I had X-Rays, blood tests, CT scans. Nothing came back abnormal. They spend time with you. They listen to you. They respond to your questions, and they give you solutions. They actually care about finding the root cause of your issue and getting you better! A truly NOVEL idea in western medicine!! I went through all the normal channels to find answers. I found none. I spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on doctors who called me crazy, wrote prescriptions for antidepressants, and gave me the same derivative solutions over and over again. I even had one doctor tell me that I should stop looking for answers because there was nothing wrong with me! My story is familiar to a lot of people. If you know something is wrong but can’t get answers, you need to go to a functional medicine doctor. You need to find a place that investigates the root cause of your problems, and treats the body like a connected system, because that’s what it is. I give Root Cause 5 stars. They have given me answers, and everybody that I have met seems like a genuinely good person, from the front desk to the providers. I can’t say enough good things about this place.

Fantastic experience: Really wasn't sure what to think at first since tele-med chiropractic care seemed counter intuitive to me. Dr Jake is a young guy but don't let that influence your thinking, he really knows his stuff and none of it is fluff, he gets right at the heart of your issue and gives you stretches and exercises that help your whole body every day. His stretches have been the most impactful to my day to day well being. Functional medicine should be the future of medicine and really hope people understand that it's about taking control of your own life not just going somewhere to have someone else fix you. Fantastic experience: Great Service and knowledge of the body and how it all ties in together from a health standpoint. I had two issues. The first was a small hiatal hernia, which caused several issues ranging from chest pain, regurgitation, and at times labored breathing. The second issue was unexplained weight gain. I had gained a significant amount of weight although I was eating healthy food and working out 3-5 days per week. Dr Rick and the team at the clinic played a major role in treating me. During my 5 month period of working win them my symptoms drastically reduced and I also dropped approx 21 pounds. It is an investment in yourself so be prepared to cover the costs of services but it is definitely worth it. I will continue working with them as long as they will have me!

Fantastic experience: I have been seeing Amanda Brilles for several years when she was in Bradenton for Bio Identical hormone replacement therapy . When she left and went to Root Cause In Clearwater I knew I had to contact her there because I would not go to anyone else. She is so kind and caring about her patients. She really listened and asks questions to get to the root of all your health issues. Even though I was seeing her for hormone therapy she also got to the root of my gut issues I had dealt with for years. Come to find out after poignant questions and some lab work it was determined I have a gluten intolerance. With some diet and lifestyle change it has subsided and I feel better than I have in years! If you are having issues with menopausal symptoms she is so knowledgeable and will provide great care. I would highly recommend seeing her. The office staff at Root cause is very pleasant and efficient as well.

Fantastic experience: I went to Root Cause after several years of breathing issues and having been to multiple doctors and specialists for treatment. The doctors treated symptoms with medicine and could never explain the source of the issues. After ongoing treatment and fighting the effects of the meds while still not resolving the underlying a friend recommended Root Cause. My “symptoms” have fully resolved and I am off all medicine including BP meds that I have been on for years. My BP and my resting HR have returned to normal healthy levels. Fantastic experience: Have had a great experience with Dr Jacob J. I was diagnosed with a Hiatal hernia condition and through Dr Jacob's program and exercises, I've been able to greatly improved the symptoms I had been experiencing (anxiety, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, etc.). Fantastic experience: I highly recommend Root Cause Medical Clinic! This is the first time I’ve taken the time to write a review for medical services. In 2008, I was diagnosed with Lupus. Later, in 2017, I was diagnosed with Crohns. I had always struggled with autoimmune conditions, occasional flare ups, joint pain, etc. Overall, I considered myself to be very health conscious; I went to the gym frequently, ate lots of fruits and vegetables, home pressed juices, homemade meals, etc. Little did I know what “healthy” meant for me and my particular needs. In 2023, I became sick and was vomiting everyday for about 3 months. I lost a total of 20 pounds and was already small-framed to begin with. I experienced panic attacks, which I’d never had before. I also started experiencing heart palpitations, resulting in numerous hospital visits. I couldn’t keep my food down and I had no idea what was going on. Given my history of Crohns, I was due for an endoscopy/colonoscopy around this time. Among other diagnoses, I was told I had various enzyme deficiencies and had a hiatal hernia. Fantastic experience: I have been working with the team at Root Cause for the last couple of months to treat the "root cause" of my hiatal hernia (with accompanying abdominal pressure and breathlessness, and acid reflux) I am very impressed with their multi-pronged approach to treatment which stems, I believe, from their philosophy of the body as a holistic entity capable of self-healing. The stool test ordered for me revealed an H. pylori. stomach infection, some additional pathogen overgrowth, and general dysbiosis. Dr. Jake designed a personal stretching/strengthening program to loosen up my tight diaphragm. After working with RC's registered dietician, and Drs. Jake and Rick, I am elated to report that I haven't had any instances of abdominal pressure and breathlessness in weeks. I can breathe much better during my swim workouts. Fantastic experience: I suffered for 8+ years with Gastrointestinal issues, because none of my doctors were ever able to identify the root cause. However, thanks to Root Cause Medical Clinic and Dr. Beth, I am well on my way to a full recovery. They were able figure out exactly my issues, treat them, and educate me on how to better take care of myself to prevent and eliminate future episodes. I am no longer experiencing any symptoms. Appointments are amazing! I say this because she spent quality time and attention. I was given so much depth of understanding about my body and what is happening with gut bacteria and hormones and organ functions, etc. I am happy to say that I am feeling so much better, symptoms have cleared, my energy has returned. Fantastic experience: I had a wonderful experience working with Dr. Beth! I decided to seek Root Cause Medical Clinic because I was not getting any answers through my conventional doctors and was just being pushed from one specialty to another. I had multiple rashes, terrible hot flashes, uvula swelling, and major insomnia. With the support of Dr. Beth and the dietician, I was instructed to do an elimination diet, which was easier than expected. My hint would be to eat at home for the first 3 weeks so you have total control over ingredients. After being on several different protocols and herbs/supplements, all of the above symptoms are gone! I was given a lymphatic drainage technique to use and had a wonderful side benefit of it almost completely healing a shoulder injury that I've dealt with for 20+ years. You do need to be ready to make some dietary changes, but when you start feeling benefits, it's so worth it. I can easily give up a few things, to be symptom free.

I was in the worst pain when I found them, not able to breathe properly and also having a lot of acidity issues. Negative experience: I called to set up an appointment. On the phone, I was told I would need to be willing to spend at least a couple thousand dollars to work with them. I had two consultations that totaled about $600. During those two consultations, I explained my symptoms, and at the second consultation, they explained to me how inflammation reacts in the body causing most of my symptoms. After spending the $600 and not having done any testing at that point, I was given a protocol that would cost about $4,500. I asked for a refund because I felt it was misleading to have two consultations before ever being treated at the price of $600. I was told that because Dr. Rick took the time to review my symptoms from the previous consultation and then spent an hour of his time with, I would not receive a refund. It doesn't quite feel right to not have any tests run and being handed a $4,500 protocol. I have read great reviews of Root Cause, and I imagine if you are someone who is not strapped financially, this is a great place to receive treatment.

Fantastic experience: Ive been doing the monthly plan at Root Cause for 3 months now and its helped me out so much! The program is such a great deal for everything I get. We get two adjustments with Dr Jake. He goes above and beyond other adjustments by giving me easy and quick exercises at home to help improve my posture which is finally after years of attempts actually improved and improved by a lot. Outside of that the vitamin injections and vitamin drips keeps me super healthy. I haven't been sick all year which is new for me. I also love all of the wellness sessions. Fantastic experience: I have to say Root Cause is a life saver. I’ve had the privilege of being treated by Dr. Rick and the experience has been exceptional to say the least. Fantastic experience: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I’ve had the monthly membership for 3 1/2 months now and have seen marked improvements in several areas. 1. I had scaring along my jaw that came about during the masks/pandemic. Focusing on Red Light for my wellness therapies, the scaring and dark marks are fully gone! I tried special serums, and expensive facials prior and nothing fully handled it. 2. My energy levels have greatly improved! Loving the IVs and vitamin injections for this. 3. Negative experience: I was very disappointed with the 2 consultations I had with Dr. Vicki and Dr. Rick. I contacted them because of my hiatal hernia, and I did read some of the nice reviews from other clients. I had already done a lot of research and part of that was watching Dr. V videos on you tube. I felt I had a really good understanding of my condition. The issue for me was what was included in the $4000.00 protocol to address the condition. I couldn't get an answer from the person over the phone nor did I get that in my first consultation with Dr. Vicki. I made the decision to move forward to have a consultation with Dr. Rick. Pre consultation paper work was filled out including an extensive health history. During my consultation with Dr. Rick, he went over what a hiatal hernia is and in great detail. Again, I already knew this information. He never went over my health history and in the end laid out what the protocols were going to be as well as the cost. After paying over $600 between the 2 consultations I finally found out what the $4000 would cover and learned about something I already knew, a hiatal hernia. At the end of the consult I was immediately contacted by their office, two calls and a text message, to get me to sign up and pay the fee in advance. It all seemed very rushed. In the end I made the choice to not move forward. I feel like Dr. Vicki could have told me this information during my consultation with her, for $75. Again, my health history was never discussed with Dr. Rick, so I don't feel that was a factor. Dr. Rick did tell me that they pretty much run the same tests and set up consults with their other practitioners, physical therapist and their dietitian, as a standard protocol for hiatal hernia treatment. I'm a very self educated person and do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions when I sit down with a doctor. Over the years I have been told that I'm not like most of the patients that walk through the door. This was the same experience I had with Root Cause. I discovered on my own that I had high mold toxicity as well as figuring out that I indeed had a hiatal hernia. I have continued to search and have found a new source to help me through this hernia issue.

Seriously, without them, I'd be stuck with a messed-up vagus nerve, on my way to hiatal hernia surgery, and popping omeprazole pills like they were candy. Fantastic experience: I came to Root Cause Clinic on Jan 2023. It was my New Years Resolution to finally find out what was wrong with me. I suffered from extreme heart burn, sudden weight gain and bloating. My regular doctors just said to loose weight and take Prilosec and over the counter acid reducer pills, which I did for years and years. I was tired of not having a "cure" just a solution. Dr. Rick, Dr. Dawn and Dr. Sterling and Lisa and Vanessa the Dietician, and the staff at Root Cause are amazing people and want to help and listen. They quickly did a few tests and determined I was gluten intollerant. With nutritional coaching and temporary supplements and elimination of gluten, I'm completely better. I no longer need Prilosec. Their approach is deeper than treating symptoms, to a point where we have checked over many different possible problems that could have led to the various symptoms I had going on with my body. Symptoms that would make life hard to live. Dr. Rick started by really helping me understand what a hiatal hernia is and then he went right in on a program to get it under control and then also guide me through tests and remedies to prevent it from returning, and to get to the Root Cause of all of my issues. I was put on a diet to eliminate anything the would add to the problem and that helped dramatically. I was kept on the diet by the dietician and I’ve been doing a series of chiropractic appts with Dr Sterling which address the physical issues that could have been part of it. Fantastic experience: After several frustrating years of suffering with a 2 cm hiatal hernia and after seeing about 6 gastrointestinal doctors who couldn't help me, I found Root Cause Medical Clinic and they have changed my life. They specialize in treating hiatal hernias and understand the symptoms that come with hernias completely. The program involves some testing for food allergies, etc., a expert dietician, a chiropractor who helps with comprehensive exercises to help the diaphragm and hernia. This is all overseen by a "team captain" doc who checks in frequently about my progress. I don't live near the clinic, so I have done this all via zoom videos and it has worked very smoothly. The treatment takes quite a few months and is comprehensive. I am so grateful I found them. I can sleep at night again, and most of my symptoms are gone (they included anxiety, depression, trouble breathing, stomach pain, inability to sleep). The hernia is here to stay, but reducing the symptoms and learning how to live with it day to day is the key. The clinic's approach is much safer and less complicated than surgery, which can be risky and not always effective.

My case was so extreme that I couldn't make my appointment due to an ambulance trip while I was driving there. On my first week there, Dr. Rick pushed down my stomach which gave me immediate relief. He also identified physical and dietary issues that others hadn't, and mapped out a plan to fix everything. I only stayed with the program for 6 months due to cost, but I was able to take their findings and continue my progress with local Functional MDs and a Fascia Release Dr. One year later and not only is my severe issue 90% resolved, but I'm down to my high school weight and on no meds! Ron (Physical Therapist) is excellent and really took the time to care even after I left the clinic. I still use his stretches to this day, so they literally have changed my life. I would knock off a star for the price, but I don't have the heart because they were there when NO ONE else was able to help.

Specifically, I was able to work closely with Dr Rupa via Zoom calls to effectively learn/follow/implement daily PT routines that kept my severe hiatal hernia symptoms under control. Fantastic experience: Dr. Sterling has helped me with my chronic neck, shoulder pain and lower back pain of 20 years by finding out that my coccyx, pubis and a few places of vertebrates were out of place. He listens to you as a person and listens to what you body is saying very carefully. Now I am pain-free and to my surprise, I can now sleep with my face up, not on my side throughout the night. I have gone to chiropractors before, but this facility is top notch. Dr. Sterling is patient and effective. His adjustment style makes you feel very comfortable. Fantastic experience: If I could give 10 stars I would. I arrived in bad shape... Covid had hit me hard and I wasn’t recovering physically even after two months. I felt weak, I had been overweight for over a decade, I couldn’t taste or smell, there was so much inflammation in my body and I felt extremely unhealthy. We did thorough tests, worked with factual data, and did a program to cover medical, functional medicine, physical therapy, chiropractic, nutrition and even IV therapy. A few months later not only am I healthier, stronger, more vibrant and alive... but I lost 40 pounds in the process.
