For those in the Dallas-Fort Worth area looking for treatment of back pain, the Texas Back Institute is the ideal destination. Their team of back and spine specialists are the most experienced in the region, and they provide services to many cities including Plano, Central Plano, Frisco, Lewisville, Irving, McKinney, Flower Mound, Denton, Rockwall, Arlington, Alliance, Mansfield, and Fort Worth TX.
It may be surprising to learn that only a small percentage of our patients require surgery. For those who do, a team of nine doctors reviews the proposed treatment plan. Additionally, each patient's medical history, imaging results, and diagnostic tests are thoroughly evaluated before any form of treatment is recommended.
Our unique approach leads to shorter recovery times and a lower chance of complications so you can get back to your normal routines. Those who don't require surgery can have their neck and back pain relieved through non-invasive, conservative treatment. Let our team help you get your life back on track immediately.
Texas Back Institute has been a leader in the field of spine technology, science, and education for over 45 years. It is one of the largest free-standing multidisciplinary academic spine centers in the world. The institute has published and presented more research on evidence-based spine treatments than any other spine center in the United States. It is committed to helping patients return to their lives and families by utilizing the latest technological advancements and medical breakthroughs, spearheading and taking part in FDA clinical trials, publishing and teaching new technologies, training surgeons through its fellowship program, and employing an expert medical team and compassionate staff.
The Institute has also been a leader in developing innovative treatments for spine disorders, such as scoliosis, herniated discs, and spinal stenosis. They have also developed new technologies and techniques to help those suffering from chronic pain.
If you are located in the Dallas, Texas area and are thinking about whether or not artificial disc surgery would be beneficial for you, the Texas Back Institute can provide assistance. We prefer to try to alleviate your pain through conservative treatments such as physical therapy and pain management before resorting to surgery. If these treatments are not successful and it is determined that you would benefit from surgery, we can help you decide if artificial disc replacement is the right choice for you.
Texas Back Institute: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Highly recommend Texas Back. I have seen Dr Ahn after some spinal issues. He came with a quick and clear diagnosis after listening to my issues. Which is something many other Drs wouldn’t do. The concern for my wellbeing and my care that Dr Ahn showed went above and beyond my expectations. I didn’t feel like just another patient to him. He was able to get me into surgery quickly and I feel like a new man because of it. So if you are having any back or neck issues please give them a call they can and will help you.
Thank you for the positive feedback. We appreciate the kind words.
Negative experience: I interacted with four different staff members… not a single one smiled or showed me kindness. I felt like I was in line at the grocery store and they were trying to get me in and out as fast as possible. When I spoke I was cut off and it seemed liked nobody wanted to hear from me ♀️ It is hard to find good healthcare. So sad. :(
We are sorry to hear of this experience and would like to look into this further. Please call Cheryl at 972.943.2719 so that we can get further information to address the situation. Thank you.
Negative experience: Why is it so difficult to get a prescription filled? My requests and the requests of my pharmacy are repeatedly ignored. I'm so tired of having to chase down my prescription. I'll be out of my medication as of my last dose tonight. Based on what I've read, gabapentin withdrawal can get serious pretty quick. Furthermore, many, many times I've called up there only to have someone pick up the phone and hang up. I've called right back and they do it again and again.
We truly value your feedback, and we are sorry to hear about this experience. Please contact Cheryl, at 972.943.2719 so that we may work to make the situation better. Thank you.
Positive experience: Dr. Tollhurst was great! He paid attention to detail and is always about surgery being the last resort. His appointment times are alittle long but worth it!
Fantastic experience: I was a patient before going to VA to take over. I prefer TBI they are excellent, take their time to insure correct diagnosis and plan of attack. Would recommend them to anyone. I plan on returning to their care over VA Medical.
Negative experience: I started calling Texas Back Institute Tues.15th after my doctor sent a referral to them to help me with my back. And 4 times I never got past receptionist telling me my doctor doesn't work there. If my doc worked there why would he send a referral.? Does anyone there understand how referrals work? My severe pain might be gone by now if only I could see a doc based on the referral sent to you office on Tues.the 15th
I am sorry for your experience with our office. Please call our CDO, Cheryl Zapata and she can help you through the process. Thank you.
Negative experience: Whoever is scheduling for appointments keeps messing up and I have to keep calling them so they can send the referrals I need. It's been a month, and I barely got scheduled for a referral appointment, and am still waiting to be scheduled for an MRI because the referral has not been sent to the right place. I cannot keep waiting this long to get the help I need, my life has been drastically affected by my illness and I am tired of being forgotten.

Negative experience: On 12/29/2020 received a consultation at Texas Back Institute located in Denton. This was really disappointing, the Dr. that assisted me did not give me a solution for my lower back pain inclusive felt that I was not being given importance. Besides that, I did not get a bill at the end of my consultation. I called an requested it multiple times but they mentioned do not have anything in the system. It is now November, 2021. Almost a year after the consultation and a bill for $313.99 Acc #310014 appears? At this point I do not have the means to pay for the services. I have been trying to get a hold someone at the billing department, but it seems that because of COVID people are still working from home. I demand an explanation along with knowing my options regarding this matter.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Thomas Kosztowski has a great bedside manner. He truly cared about helping me. He made me feel like he really cared about my pain and that he really wanted to fix my problem. He is patient, took his time with me and was more than willing to answer any questions I had. I hope that I don’t need his services again, but would definitely come back if needed.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback!
Fantastic experience: Dr.Thomas Kosztowski and I met in November 2019 after I had a brain seizure in Argyle remodeling a house. It just so happened he was at the hospital when I came in under distress from a seizure, which they also found a goose-egg sized tumor in my brain. Dr. K did my surgery but not only did he stop there, because the man cares, he built a team of doctors around me. There is no doubt in my mind, that the Lord put me at that horrible hospital for this man to take over my cancer treatments. Keep in mind, he is just a surgeon, but he went the extra mile for me and saved my life. I owe everything I have to him.

Fantastic experience: Skilled, kind, knowledgeable and caring. My recent surgery was the 2nd time Dr. Hisey got me on my feet. I am in good hands with the staff at TBI. I regret not having the words to say how appreciative my family and I are.
Thank you for the positive feedback! We love seeing great ratings like this.
Positive experience: The only reason you get a 3 is for the doctor. I've been waiting for weeks for a injection, I get a call saying I'm out of network . Why can't you send someone to a doctor who is in network? You have my insurance information ! All I want is pain relief! I never got a call back about pain management, never got a call back about finding a doctor to do my injection that was in my network . If you treat your patients this way , I'd hate to see how well you do your surgeries! I'm very disappointed in this doctors office! Care about your patients and they will care back!

Negative experience: Nope. Would not recommend. Take off work for an morning appointment, just to be told I'd have to come back later Dr. wasn't here. I don't think so. Had bad vibes just from dealing with them on the phone. Many better places in Denton.

Negative experience: Wanted to find a treating physician closing to home. Called on Monday morning, provided information and had to leave a message with scheduler. Two days later still no return call. Obviously they have more business then they can handle.

Fantastic experience: I highly recommend this place if you are having any neck or back pain / issues. Very professional and polite. They try everything out to help before surgery is even consider an option. I had to have surgery and had to have total disc replacement in my neck. Dr Boah was very polite, conscience, professional and very knowledgeable of his profession. He took steps to help reduce pain until my surgery. He took the time to discuss all matters. He very caring and took the time to lead prayer over me and my surgery before taking me back. Without any hesitation I recommend him as physician.
Negative experience: If possible to give less than 1 I would have.
Negative experience: No privacy of your information on the tablet computers they provide to new patients. I saw too much of someone else's information and left without seeing a doctor. Filed a HHS complaint. I don't know about the doctors, but have ZERO trust in their information security.
Negative experience: If I could do a zero I would. Office staff are very rude and unprofessional
Negative experience: Office staff defensive and rude. Waited 6 weeks for spine injection, only to be cancelled the day before. They would try and squeeze me in sometime in next 2 months. All the while, I'm in severe pain. They simply don't care about you.
Negative experience: Unfortunately I had a similar experience to the previous reviewer. I went to see Dr Boah in February and have not received any relief. I was never fully examined all they did was take X-rays of my back and send me home with muscle relaxers(tons) since my Xrays were "fine." I explained to the doctor that my pain has been terrible for a long time now and he said he believes it's a muscle strain. I'm no doctor but how can I have a muscle strain for 2 years now?I am disappointed because I put my trust into doctors that are supposed to help me find treatment for pain but instead give me medication that has had terrible side effects and send me home doing after doing the minimum. I called last month to speak to someone about my experience expecting a reputable office to take responsibility or atleast try to help me find a solution but no, instead I was rudely scolded about what a doctor's visit should look like and that I can schedule a second opinion visit and pay MORE money to have someone else look at my back. Another thing she recommended was a steroid shot in my back which the doctor had mentioned nothing about so I'm not sure where she got that from but neither or anyone I know will be paying this place a visit.
Negative experience: I saw Dr Boah and he was no help at all. I spent over an hour waiting even though I had filled out the same paperwork on their online portal. I only spoke with Dr Boah for about 10 mins when I emphasized my low back pain was beyond my control and all I was told was to get a MRI and being it back. I asked if he could prescribe something for my pain and he replied "for what?" I swear, you take time off work and spend time and resources to get medical help only to get the run-around from these "Dr's". Pisses me off. Especially because it seems that this is the norm nowadays. Ridiculous, I don't recommend this place to anyone.
Negative experience: If you are looking for pain relief...keep looking . From having to wait days for a call back, weeks for an appointment to incompetent office staff you'll still have the same back ache with the added bonus of a headache of having to deal with them! When you're in pain you want relief quickly with the diagnosis being the goal. You will not find that here. Medication and more testing is all I got in the year I went. The office staff are incompetent, the nurses lack empathy, and they have so many patients that getting an appointment in a timely manner is impossible. I really could go on and on but believe me when I say that you will do better going somewhere else. At every appointment, I would have to remind the doctor that we had already done that, or talked about this...We were going in circles for so long that I am actually embarrassed that I put up with it for so long. If you have the time, here are just a few of the examples of my experience with TBI: Medication: Doctor was not well versed in the daily dosages of a common pain reliever and I had to tell him that what he gave me interacted with my current medications. He also said that if the medication that I was on was working then I shouldn't try to change it, so he wrote the prescription for a DIFFERENT version and dosage of said medication. Called back in severe pain so he prescribed an obscure muscle relaxer at a dosage that none of the pharmacies had on stock. They did, however, have the double dosage and stated that I could take a half but that I would need that written on the prescription. When I called the office they said that there was no provider there but that they would let him know on Monday (this was Friday). I asked if there was an on-call doctor and she said there was but I would need to call after 5. I called after 5 and the nurse that answered, laughed, and said, 'no, that's not what the doctor on call is for'. I told her that this was what I was instructed to do and she put me on hold. She came back to tell me that the nurse I talked to did not know what she was talking about and that the doctor on call 'wouldn't know if that is what my doctor would want' which made no sense since I was not asking to change what he prescribed but just the wording. She refused to send a message to the doctor on call. I did not get a call back until that next Wednesday. Testing: Among all the tests, the doctor ordered one, in particular, that he had stated (the appointment before) wouldn't even be reliable because I had just had surgery and it would take at least a year to get real results. It must be rare b/c when the nurse was checking me out she looked at another staff member and said something to the effect of "give me a break, Dr _____!' and followed it with an ugh! The other lady looked at her and said "get used to it". Then, while she was calling around to find a place that actually performed the test, she looked at me and said "you can go" in such a rude way that I didn't know how to responds. I said 'excuse me?'and she said that I could go and she would call me back. She never called me back and when I called them back they did not have a record of him requesting the test but then asked about it when I was at my next appointment. MRI: That one seemed to stump him. He gave me 2 totally different explanations of the same MRI except the second one required, you guessed it, another test. When I went back for the follow up, they had me waiting for an hour and half to see the doctor. He decided that I needed yet another $1000+ test! Eventually, I had to take over and do my own research. I went back up to the imaging facility to get another copy of the MRI with the verbiage so that I could read what the radiologist found. His report actually had some real answers! I had a clear diagnosis from the MRI report, NOT the doctor I had been paying for a year. I was able to research all of the findings and my diagnosis from this report and seek the correct treatments that DO NOT include pain medications or more testing!
