When it comes to medical care for weight-loss and metabolic issues, healthcare professionals recommend seeking out a nationally accredited bariatric center that meets the highest standards of safety and quality. Memorial Hospital Pembroke in South Florida recently received reaccreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint venture of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
In addition to Memorial Hospital Pembroke, two other bariatric centers in the Memorial Healthcare System have been granted accreditation. One is located at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood and the other is located at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines. These three centers are providing high quality care to their patients.
Stephen Demers, CEO of Memorial Hospital Pembroke, expressed his pride that their bariatric center has been reaccredited, indicating that it provides assurance to patients that they are receiving care that meets the highest standards for weight-loss and other metabolic issues.
The MBSAQIP Standards provide the ideal support for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients, ensuring that they receive comprehensive medical care that optimizes their outcomes and increases their chances of long-term success. MBSAQIP-Certified facilities provide pre- and post-operative care tailored to the specific needs of individuals with obesity.
Memorial Hospital Pembroke's recent accreditation is a sign of its commitment to providing quality care. This commitment is led by Brett Cohen, MD, the Chief of Adult General Surgery and Bariatric Surgery Program. The rest of the bariatric surgical team is comprised of Jeremy Gallego Eckstein, MD, Joseph Melendez-Davidson, MD, and Emil Matei, MD. All of these individuals are dedicated to providing safe, effective, and high-quality care to all metabolic and bariatric patients. The program is also constantly analyzing surgical data to further improve the structure and outcomes of the care they provide.
In order to receive MBSAQIP Accreditation, Memorial Hospital Pembroke had to fulfill the necessary requirements for personnel, training, facility structure, and patient care protocols to ensure its ability to provide care to those suffering from obesity. The facility also participates in a national registry that produces biannual reports on the quality of its surgical results and identifies areas for improvement. The MBSAQIP Standards, Optimal Resources for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, are developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
After applying for MBSAQIP Accreditation, a thorough on-site review is conducted by an experienced bariatric surgeon. This review examines the center's organization, processes, and patient outcome data. Centers that are awarded accreditation are given a specific designation level based on the number of patients they treat annually, their critical care abilities, the types of operations they provide, and if they have the capacity to care for patients under 18.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 93 million adults in the United States are currently suffering from obesity, and this number is still increasing. This disorder can result in a variety of health issues, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, as well as other risks. Metabolic and bariatric surgery has been shown to be an effective way to reduce the associated comorbid conditions of obesity. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) have worked together to develop accreditation standards for metabolic and bariatric surgery to help patients with obesity find centers that offer the highest quality of care.
In 2004, Buchwald, Avidor, Braunwald, and their colleagues published a systematic review and meta-analysis of bariatric surgery in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The article, which has the DOI 10.1001/jama.292.14.1724, outlines the findings of the review.
Matthew Muhart, Chief Strategy Officer of Memorial Healthcare System, commented that customers have made it clear that they desire to witness an improvement in service, quality, and efficiency from the health system in the United States. He highlighted that they must continue to strive for better results. Muhart also discussed their collaboration with HOPCo, which illustrates their continuous dedication and investment in their musculoskeletal service line, with the objective of delivering the most favorable results for the people in their region.
Glam-A-Thon, a non-profit organization based in South Florida that collects money for breast cancer-related causes, has just donated $40,000 to the Memorial Foundation to fund mammograms and biopsies at Memorial Cancer Institute. This money will be used to help uninsured and underprivileged women, and was raised from the "Lipstick Lounge Rock the Runway" event and from the generous donations of its members.
Tammy Gail, the President of Glam-A-Thon and a breast cancer survivor, was accompanied by board members when the check was presented. Kevin Janser, Babette Kosar, Tiffany Panciera, Dr. Brian Hunis, and Meredith Feinberg, who all represent Memorial's foundation and cancer institute, were also present.

Memorial Outpatient Rehab Center: Reviews
Fantastic experience: There the best to me very professional the staff is very kind & on point with there patients this place is very clean & well organized
Fantastic experience: Suzette from the pediatric physical therapy dept was the best! My son loved physical therapy and benefited so much from his treatment. Couldn't recommend this facility and her more!
Fantastic experience: They are doing a great job for their patients
Fantastic experience: Just completed 3 months of cardiac rehab here. It was a fantastic experience - the staff was made up of top-notch professionals and very approachable, the facility is a very well-equipped fitness center. Grateful!!!
Positive experience: Very complete gym for MHS staff
Negative experience: No one answers or calls you back. Skyler called one time left message 3-4 times. Not efficient or professional. Knee replacement in. Humana ok once and three weeks later get a message from Skyler.
Negative experience: Best cardiologist and pulmonary rehab in the country, wonderful and very professional staff. However physical therapy is another world, with no respect for patient dignity or condition, expect arrogant rescheduling if you 2 min late or dismissal if you dare to express your symptoms or concerns to evaluating therapist, leadership sane, stating it is her home, and acting accordingly as she feels fit, in spite of reminding she is an employee held ir should have been held to standard of care, more as a supervisor, to higher standard of care... another world and mentality opposed to that of cardiac and pulmonary hard 2orking and care giving therapist... shame
Fantastic experience: Sharon G., Maxine P. and Emilio S. have been AMAZING!!! I have been going for a few months now and they are knowledgeable about physical therapy and clearly love what they do. They are all very patient, very kind, professional, they answer all of my questions and they genuinely care about my physical well-being. They all take the time to educate me on helpful exercises that I can do to relieve the pain. Due to the information that they provide me, I am aware of what is going on with me physically because they explained it in such a clear way to me. I have gone there in pain and by the end of my therapy session with either of the 3 Physical Therapists Sharon, Maxine and/or Emilio, I would leave feeling so much relief which is INCREDIBLE!
Fantastic experience: Phillip and Mohan excellent physical therapist
Fantastic experience: Great care
Negative experience: Don’t waste your time calling this place. They never answer the phone calls. I had to go in person and called in front of them several times and none of the girls on front desk or behind answered, they said were “busy” with other paciente but nobody else was there except me. They literally laugh and lie in patient faces so easy, no ethical principles or education at all. For real don’t waste your time coming this place. They are really busy in their gossip and laze business
Negative experience: Unable to schedule an appointment. They don't answer phone calls or receive fax . Fax fails
Negative experience: How can they possibly take care of people well if they can't even figure out how to answer the phone or return a call?
Fantastic experience: What an amazing center for rehab and fitness They offer a wide variety of services pt ot speech cardio pulm rehab as well as extensive child services for learning speech and mobility. Staff are amazing
Fantastic experience: Wow
Fantastic experience: It was a pleasure to have the help of wonderful fifth floor staff and the therapists to help my husband in his recovery after having a stroke. They support him and they gave encouraging words along with encouragement and enthusiasm to help him achieve his goal which is full recovery. There aren't enough words to express my gratitude so therefore I will say thank you all for the support.
Negative experience: Never picks up the phone or return my voice mail I been calling for two weeks trying to confirm my son appointment and still no return call
Negative experience: The staff is very friendly but after waiting for 3 weeks they never call me to let me know if my insurance company gave them the ok for treatment, after finding out that l didnt need approval from my insurance lm still waiting for them to call
Fantastic experience: I tried like crazy calling and calling and calling to get throw to make an appointment and it was nearly impossible. No answer at any time of the day for several days. I found it best to leave a message. If you need to leave several messages explaining..."this is my second, third, four, message and i still having gotten a response" this way i have found it more affective for them to answer back to my messages. Make sure you leave your name and number. After you get throw everything else goes smooth. Great service and friendly people.
Negative experience: OMG 3 days in the row, several times trying to reach somebody at the phone, leaving messages when the machine asks for promising somebody will call me back...how can you schedule an evaluation and therapies with this place if seems like they do not have recepcionista or a desk person who answer phone calls!
