Experiencia fantástica: In March of 2021 I had covid. I was put on a ventilator, ,tracheostomy, and feeding tube.. I spent 87 days from ICU admission, where I coded twice and thankfully, they brought me back. I was transferred to Summa Rehab and cannot thank them enough for giving me the strength, both mentally and physically to get through what I thought was impossible. When I got there, my whole left side was flacid, I was trached and had a feeding tube for nutrition. Speech therapy was first, they worked so hard with me, within four days, I was eating. Next was PT & OT, I was so weak and with my left side being flacid, I couldn't do anything for myselfI at all. PT started with the slide board getting me up out of bed and into a wheelchair. The hardest was getting to sit up without falling over and then from sitting in bed to pulling myself up to standing. The gruellling drills they put me through, ultimately allowed me to get strong enough to stand and eventually walk. The multi- therapy schedule was extremely intense, which is what was needed to recuperate from being in bed so long, which resulted in the severe loss of muscle tone. Occupational therapy worked on the skills of daily living, from getting dressed, personal hygiene to opening a refrigerator to put away groceries. I am where I am today because of Summa Rehab. I am so thankful for the amazing staff and all of their support through one of the hardest times of my life. John Speicher

Experiencia negativa: I read another review about them missing signs of pneumonia. Well we had a similar experience. My main issue was my dad got sick there and they ignored his cough and never treated him for anything. By the time he got home he had pneumonia. This was probably why he struggled so much with his therapy. He was sick. They also continued to give him pain meds that made him tired and out of it so he could barely do any therapy. The final thing was them ignoring his follow up appointment. He could have had xrays and had a different weight bearing status during his last few days there. Instead we had to move his follow up to after his discharge setting him back yet again by a week. This could have been avoided seeing as how one of his doctors was affiliated with western reserve and could've communicated with his orthopedic surgeon and scheduled xrays. Then again he should've had a chest xray with the cough he had and that never happened either. I understand time is limited there but they dont make the most of it. They wonder why patients dont progress more when they are the reason. This is a rehab hospital and yet he made little to no progress and by no fault of my father. It sucks because a lot of the staff are great the doctors just dont do anything.

Experiencia negativa: Back in 2019 my dad was here and the communication was very good and I was kept updated on his PT and OT as well as his medical condition. Fast forward five years and my mom is there. The communication has been non-existent, even when I ask for someone to call me. When I ask for an update, I don't get specifics. I am giving two stars because mom doesn't seem neglected on receiving her food and the young gentleman that gave her PT was so wonderful.

Experiencia negativa: While my grandmother was admitted during her first stay at Summa Rehab facility we expressed concern for the following; 1. She was released too early. She had just gotten out of ICU and was put on a regular floor for half a day before being sent to rehab. We were assured that it was important for her to immediately enter rehab, and that she was in the best of care. Upon that morning my mother and I entered the facility to find out that the day before she was; 1. Not fed lunch/dinner 2. Didn’t receive breakfast 3. Was still in bed with her street clothes (no one changed her in the nightwear) 4. She was laying in wet clothes where no one bothered to change her. We made a complaint and sat down with Beth Rohr, who assured us that this was not their standard and for a chance to do better. They did do better and even allowed us to spend nights with her and put a monitor in her room. She bonded with some of the nurses, and staff…. While there she did experience what appeared to be a bladder infection and was experiencing confusion—I along with the nurses expressed this concern to Dr. Lasso who blew her off because of her age (92) and walked out the room as we were talking. Before her illness, she was an extremely active 92 year old (not the average 92 year old) and for her to constantly be blown off for her age was discriminatory. She eventually was treated after we had to go over Dr. Lasso and complain. She did do well in rehab, and completed rehab… On discharge day, she was set to go home and when doing a final checkup, a wonderful (I believe nurse practitioner who was great with her care) named Karen, listened to her chest and sent her back to ER—it turns out she still had fluid from pneumonia (which was why she was treated initially) in her lungs which is what she struggled with the ENTIRE TIME while in rehab. She was treated and sent back to rehab…she was there for 3 days and her oxygen level dropped and she was sent back to ER for fluid in her lungs and chest. They did see that it cleared and while doing therapy in Summa hospital. She did extremely well since the fluid was gone and her oxygen levels stayed good. They were extremely impressed with how well she did and recommended her to go back, only for rehab to say “she can’t, because she couldn’t keep up.” She kept up in the first stint of rehab, while struggling….and by no fault of her own she was sent back. She along with our family believes and knows she can keep up to do a “three hour program” but because of negligence and constant dismissals they’ve tossed her to the side. I’ve place calls to the facility yesterday and haven’t heard back from anyone in their office. While I understand this is not their relative or loved one, this is mine. This is someone who means the entire world and more to me and my family, and someone we would do anything in this world for. My grandmother is my life, and she deserves the best care….to not only dismiss her, subtly neglect, and ruin her chances of even getting the care she needs is degrading and disgusting. Because of their “notes” she can’t enter ANY rehab facility that caters to the care she needs. Our first choice would have been Edwin Shaw had we seen the reviews online. Because Summa rejected her based on their poor, and unfair assessment…Edwin Shaw declined her based on this facilities assessment of her. We found out today that they were giving her Tylenol which was affecting her liver (she has fatty liver/liver cirrhosis) and Tylenol is not to be given to someone with that condition. Which we found out today. I’m heartbroken and disappointed and we don’t know what to do. If you deeply care for your loved one, don’t send them to this place. We are considering getting legal representation.

Experiencia fantástica: My M.I.L. has been going to out patient therapy here for about a year, has had tremendous recovery that could not have happened without the wonderful therapists. The physical and occupational therapist have been amazing. They have wonderful state of the art equipment but their people are truly what make this place a great place when you really need it.

Experiencia fantástica: I was at Summa Rehab from 08/05/2024 to 08/17/2024. The nursing staff and medical staff were exceptional and very professional. They were always there to assist me and never made me feel like I was a bother to them. The therapist staff, both Physical & Occupational, were wonderful to work with. They would work you hard but always asked if it was too much or if you needed a break. From the start I felt like they all had become friends and family. I would highly recommend Summa Rehab to anyone in need of such services. A special thanks to Isabel, Amy, & David in the therapy department.

Experiencia negativa: The short overweight guy named steve who wears blacks scrubs in the detox unit is literally the worst medical professional I have encountered. He made my stay miserable. All he cares about is in clocking in and clocking out. The same can be said for the rest of them too. I had to ask for a sandwich 3 times over 4 hours before I got one. They ended up telling me I was done detoxing and sent me to PES who doesn't do detox. They kept me for 2 hours and sent me home. I had a seizure about 2 hours after I got home because summa wouldn't listen when I told the I was still detoxing. Go to Akron general, ADM, or aultman. I'm switching all of my doctor's to Akron general because of this experience... Especially with Steve in particular.

Experiencia negativa: My father was sent here for PT & OT following brain surgery. He went in at 9am Friday and never received a treatment. Instead they had him so drugged up he barely knew who we were and wasn’t himself. When I questioned them about what he was on I was lied to. (I know this because I was later told by another Dr) He was sent back to the hospital on Sunday and readmitted. When it came time to return to therapy they refused him saying he wasn’t cooperating while he was there before. How could he when they had him on all those meds he didn’t need that made him loopy and not himself?! When I asked about his belongings they told me several times when he was assigned a room they would send them. Only to find out when he did get his room I had to come get them. Upon arrival to get his belongings the girl at the front was shoveling food in her face with a fork AND her hand and continued to do so while I was talking to her. On top of all of this he has a colostomy bag and when he got discharged to an outpatient rehab his stoma was raw and bleeding because nobody was taking care of it like they were supposed to. VERY DISAPPOINTED SUMMA

Three hospital stays, a major surgery, a three hour stay in a terrible skilled nursing facility, and finally landing at summa rehab. We didn’t know if she was going to make it, but the progress that she has made in this facility is unbelievable! This has been the most posit Ive experience, and I truly believe that they have saved my mom‘s life.

Experiencia fantástica: I'm not even sure I can explain in words how amazing this facility is. My husband spent 3 weeks there after a severe motorcycle accident that resulted in one of the worst TBI injuries most doctors and surgeons had ever encountered. Summa Rehab's protocol for brain injuries made a huge difference in his recovery and every staff member is respectful and mindful of that! The nursing staff is attentive, compassionate, and patient. Lindsay and Mack were my husband's favorite nurses here. The therapy team is phenomenal. My husband really strived with his therapists and each one of them pushed him to his fullest capabilities. Morgan did not let him become defeated and pushed him harder than anyone, Paige and Diana were always patient and challenged him! Even the therapists who didn't work with him on a daily basis would always encourage him and check in on his progress would they would see him in he gym. At Summa Rehab, I felt like there was not one person who didn't like their job or the company they work for and if they did, they certainly never showed it. The front desk staff and officer were the friendliest and always welcoming and made sure to get to know the families coming in. My husband is now home and is amazing on his own. He came so far in 3 weeks at Summa Rehab and is probably even more independent than he was before! We are forever grateful for the staff at Summa Rehab. Thank you for so much an amazing experience to a horrible situation.

The case management department has no skills, especially seeing that patients and family are having questions answered! They actually should be ashamed of themselves! They take it upon themselves to cancel important appointments and pretty much are worthless! They are smug and snooty! They should be meant to do selfless acts, like work in soup kitchens and homeless shelters, where that way they would know what it means to be a kind ,caring human being !

State of the art facility, patient health care professionals, listen to your concerns and address them. Quicker healing, and you don't have to wait long at all to get help to the bathroom. They pay attention to what you are saying as well as observe what you are not saying, and get help for you fast. Anyone that wants to get back on their own quick... this is the place. Also allow you to keep your dignity.

The Rehab hospital of Summa was first class with wonderful therapists and equipment. Summa returned me to my former self, able to function, work and play as I had been accustomed to! A huge “Thank you”,to the entire team of my new friends.

I have had the distinct pleasure of working closely with many of the physical/occupational therapists at Summa Rehab Hospital’s outpatient neurological therapy program. I cannot possibly list all of the fantastic encounters I’ve personally experienced and witnessed. The entire staff approaches their job and patients with a positive and uplifting attitude. The success stories and outcomes I have witnessed there are truly unparalleled. Just being present in the therapy gym, it becomes very obvious how much they care for their patients and how invested they are in their recovery. I cannot recommend SRH strongly enough. Derek, Abby, Jessica, Ashley, Erin…I could continue to list the names of staff members that make genuine impacts upon the lives of their patients!

Experiencia negativa: We've had issues with my brother's nurses since we got here but my final straw was walking into his room and seeing URINE in his water cup. Why was he not helped to the bathroom? And why was he not checked on long enough for him to pee in his cup and for it to be sitting??? Y'all are supposed to be HELPING HIM!!! I even asked my parents about it and they said it’s happened a few times?! Unacceptable. Do not send your family here. The therapists are AMAZING but that's about it.

Experiencia positiva: So far I'm not impressed with this rehab center. My mom's LPN Sarah is rude. She needs to put her cell phone down and act like she cares shen asked a question at the desk. She also had one of therapists change my mom's urine collector. The poor girl spilled some. My mom asked her if this is even her job and she said no. The threapists so far are very nice. I had a message in the early morning to call back so I called back and got the run around. Several workers said "I think she's still here" Noone semed to know anything! I had to repeat her name several times and asked to spell it. They even transferred me to my mom's room. Come to find out, she wasn't even there. She had to be transferred to the ER for an issue and she's on her way back. Just frustrating that noone seems to know anything.

Experiencia fantástica: I can't say enough about the staff here at Summa Rehab Hospital They go out of there way to help you with your rehabilitation goals. I spent 7 days here after a 21 day stay in the hospital with severe Covid-19 that included 13 days in the ICU. The staff here treats each patient with respect. The Physical and Occupational therapist go out of there way to teach the correct ways to regain your mobility. I would recommend this location to anyone who needs rehabilitation services.

Experiencia fantástica: My fiancé has been here for 2 weeks and will be home on the 30th. He has received 2 to 3 hrs of therapy a day. The staff here are absolutely amazing. They have been able to answer any and every question I have had. They have been the most supportive in his rehabilitation. They have been so caring and understanding. I would definitely recommend this facility.

Experiencia fantástica: My husband was at Summa Rehab Hospital for a week following surgery for a septic hip infection. We were so fortunate that insurance approved Summa Rehab rather than a step down nursing home rehab facility. He received two to three hours of PT and OT each day and the entire staff was so wonderful. Every nurse, aide, doctor, Molly the pharmacist, PT and OT therapist was fantastic. We can’t thank Summa Rehab enough.

Experiencia fantástica: I was moved to summa rehab on October 31 after a week stay at Akron City hospital. On October 27, I was struck by a pick up truck while crossing the street. Akron City hospital and summa rehab center were absolutely amazing! My only regret is I didn't get everyone's name. I received the most amazing care and this was from the top, doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, aides, PT, OT, student nurses down to the kitchen (especially my lil ray of sunshine Tiana) who brighten up my room when she brought my food. I know I'm going to leave people out but I'd like to acknowledge people by name: Shelly,Brittany, Jessica, Erin,Seeya,Darlene, LeAnne,Sancoyia, Colleen (she made me laugh) Caitlin, Meaghan, Morgan and my case worker Melissa who told me she wanted me to stay because she was going to miss me. And last but definitely not least, Autumn who wheeled me out to car on November 9th and helped me into car, buckled my seatbelt and hugged me. I would totally recommend this place! God bless that wonderful staff there!

Pictures do say a thousand words, but until you step foot into a modern facility with an expansive gym, you can't fully appreciate the building. Concerning the staff, Summa Rehab Hospital has a top notch clinical staff that is focused on getting you back to better. Exceptional therapists and nursing staff. This facility was ranked in the Top 8 of Newsweek's Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers in Ohio for 2020. If you're from the greater Akron area or in a location with sub-par Rehabilitation facilities, Summa Rehab Hospital is the place to go.

Experiencia negativa: My dad was here for over 40 days and I can’t say enough good things about all his therapists. Derek, Morgan, Marissa, and all his speech therapists were wonderful. However the nursing staff was not great and I would be concerned if family or friends didn’t check in everyday. They were very slow getting to him when he would press the call button and they didn’t always check to make sure he was eating or drinking. He had memory issues so he needed a lot of help and reminders. Also the case manager we worked with was very rude and not helpful. Overall therapy would be the only reason you would want your loved one there.

Experiencia negativa: A family member stayed in this facility and I was pretty disappointed in the end for this place being so new... the employees are all friendly and helpful but at some point they would literally get frustrated and impatient with my family member right in front of us visiting, she ended up having to be transferred back to the hospital after being here a couple of days due to a second stroke and on the way back somehow her dentures went missing here and it’s been over a week and still haven’t heard back about the dentures in which she obviously needs ASAP. They need to be more organized and patient.

Experiencia fantástica: My father needed rehab after a stroke and found the best therapist in James Lee. James was not only his physical therapist but also his biggest encourager. My father has been home for some time and still talks about the impact James made on his recovery (which prompted me to share this with anyone considering Summa Rehab Hospital). My dad says that James gave him choices when he needed them and no choice when he needed that instead. He also says that James pushed him to do things he didn't believe possible. James even taught him how to get up after a fall when he went home, knowing that my father would sometimes push himself past his limits. James Lee is now the Lead Therapist at Summa Rehab Hospital. I would advise anyone in need of great rehab to go there!

It has been by far the most rewarding career move I have ever made. The people at SRH are AMAZING. In my 30+ years of working in the customer service/administrative field, I have never worked with a more compassionate or dedicated group of individuals.... make that "TEAM!" Every single discipline from Administration, Nursing, Therapy, Reception, Environmental Services, Food and Nutrition, Physicians, Admissions, Pharmacy, Accounting, Case Management, Human Resources, Medical Records, Quality & Risk Management, Protective Services all the way to Volunteer Services - GENUINELY cares for our patients and 'PEOPLE' in general. Until I began working here, I had never worked with a team that acted/acts so quickly to make changes to better the patients' experience, ultimately benefiting the organization as a whole. Experiencia fantástica: My sister Tracy has MS and has been at the facility several times and has always had a great experience. The therapy team is EXCELLENT. My sister had to go to another facility because of her diagnosis and there is a difference! They are always listening to improve and that is great. Everyone is always nice and accommodating. I would recommend Summa Rehab any day.

Experiencia fantástica: The interdisciplinary team works to get patients home. Our ultimate goal is to get patients home and home safely. The nursing team and therapists work closely with the patients and families to achieve their goals. One family asked is a therapy horse could come visit their dad and we made it happen!

Experiencia negativa: Of the three hospitals my mother has been to since December for her long recovery, this is the only one that wouldn’t let her grandchildren visit.

Experiencia negativa: My mom was there for some rehab and she was told that she couldn’t have a shower because they were short staffed. She would press her call light and no one would come to check on her until the freaking CEO of the hospital was walking around and checked on her and took care of her. The nurses would ask my mom what dosage she was taking and what her medical care plan was. Do your people not talk to each other or know how to read charts? An inhaler they gave her hurt her throat so she requested to go back to the inhaler she used to take but the respiratory therapist argued with my mom and refused to give her the medicine she knows works. They also had no idea how to put together her CPAP machine. It didn’t work for the entire weeks stay. My mom had to go on a hunger strike and therapy strike for anyone to listen to her. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!

Experiencia negativa: My mother was admitted here after knee surgery and the building is beautiful but the people are not. There is a level of incompetence at this hospital so much so that the nurses and therapists can't communicate with one another. My mother had to relay her patient care to every single medical professional that came into her room. Plus, her meals were always late - I walked down the corridor and saw every persona in her wing had a tray of food except my mother. It was unacceptable. The respiratory therapists were rude and professional. They called my Mom a liar. Mom had go on a hunger strike and physical therapy strike to get anyone's attention and eventually was dischraged. Go to another rehab hospital - best advice I can give.

Experiencia negativa: I would visit my father daily to monitor his progress with recovering from a stroke. While there I would clean up his room and help him around. The staff seemed distant and always were at least an hour late on medicine schedules. The kicker is yesterday I was straightening up his room (#110) and noticed his personal belonging bag was missing that had his necklace in it valued over $1,300.00. We made a police report and suspect a nurse aid swiped it the night prior, since I would clean the room daily. The respect giving to my dad since then has been horrible. Please avoid or be asked to be transferred to the Rehab center in Barberton. Don't be fooled by the condition of the building, its a new and clean building but that's all it has going for it.

Experiencia negativa: I will never refer anyone to this facility! My mom was admitted a week ago and so far only one shower given (it's ok per the Doctor to get one). Everytime you ask the nurse was she giving a shower they always say, I thought the physical therapist gave her a shower. Don't you guys ever communicate with each other? Or better yet just ask her! Also, one of the nurses lied to my mom's face about applying cream to an infection. God forbid if she need to go to the restroom the call light is answered 10 minutes later while a tech just mosey on by. The building itself is nice, but the staff here are not caring to your family members need! The staff think since mom had surgery that she is stupid and wouldn't know any better, but she is far from it! I think we're going to look else where! Or better yet ruffle some feathers with the Director of Nursing!

Experiencia fantástica: Beautiful facility! They took excellent care of my step-mom after she suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Experiencia negativa: I did not want to give Summa Rehab even one star, but it won't let me post without at least one. As a visiting family of a patient, we had a HORRIBLE experience there. Staff lied to us and made unsubstantiated accusations against one of us. Zero proof. We were never able to resolve the problem because of all their lying.

Experiencia negativa: It was a subpar hospital stay for my father. I was up there the whole time with him. The techs are a very hard working team. They run the hospital. The only problem I had was the secretary on the first floor. She's very rude and when I asked where I could get a few wash rags for my dad's face she was very rude and said it's not her job it's a techs job go ask them. All I did was ask where they were it wasn't like I asked her to wash his face. Other than that little experience everything when smoothly for my dad.

Experiencia negativa: My husband has been there 2 weeks and will be discharged tomorrow. I find it ridiculous that you can never find a washcloth or pillow cases in the cabinets outside the rooms. I have to ask to get them and once a tech cut a towel in several pieces for wash cloths. I questioned the nurse why my husband had not been given a basin of water or even a cup with water and toothbrush. He was admitted Saturday and I gave him a bath that day. I was asking on Tuesday why he was in the same clothes. He has fractured hips and cannot walk to get anything. She made excuses but the aid suddenly appeared with a basin which he did not have in his room and came with toothbrush and toothpaste. He by most nurses gets his pain medicine late. He has rang for his medicine and did not get it for an hour later. Not a pleasant situation for a man with a fracture on each hip and has screws pins and plates. I work till 3:30 then go to the hospital till 8:30 at night. There are several good nurses and techs but I believe he could have been taken care of better.

Experiencia negativa: A one star rating, and that's only because the CNO and the techs are great! If it hadn't been for them (and if it were possible) I'd give a scathing review and NO stars. The care was not only substandard, but patients are expected to determine the full scope of the care they receive. Not a medical person? (I am) Too bad. You ask for your pain meds (ask early, it'll take at least 40 minutes to get them) and your antiemetics (because you've thrown up three times and the nurse makes no suggestion other than ginger ale and crackers which you just threw up). No clock in the room so that you know what time it is for meds, meals, or therapies. Then when a clock is put in your room, it stops working within 3hours and no one has any thoughts about what to do. (The tech got a different clock from an empty room. It was great!) those white boards in every room? You know--the ones where the nurses document who they are, when you have therapy, when you had pain meds and when they're due again? Hasn't been updated since Saturday morning, when I updated it myself. Staff in a rehab hospital that deny all knowledge about how to put cryocuffs on. Haven't moved your bowels and feel terrible? (Yes to the prunes every morning, yes to the stool softener every day)? How about we just wait until 9:45 pm going into day 9 before we offer to do something for you. Oh wait...the nurse did suggest that I bring mom an apple. Hourly rounding? Uh huh, sure. Not that anyone does anything (except the techs) when they do come in. Nurses who didn't bother to ask about pain NOT ONE TIME IN TWO DAYS despite being 72 hours out from a bilateral knee replacement. Didn't even ask. Attitude, snippy, rude, incompetent nursing care and that's being generous. Blamed the patient for the nurse's lack of general knowledge, professionalism, and compassion. The one exception was the CNO, who is a fabulous lady. Too bad she couldn't handpick her staff, because she's fighting a losing battle. Bottom line--this was my mom's stay, and I've been totally disgusted. I'm an 18 year Summa employee (RN), and I'm sorry to say that I'll go to major lengths to let people know that when you have a choice about where to do your physical therapy rehab stay, choose somewhere else. ANYWHERE else. This place is beyond awful. I'm glad this is a joint venture with Vibra, because as a Magnet Ambassador, I wouldn't want the nursing "care" happening there--or rather NOT happening there--to impact the designation that tells the world that our nursing care is the best of the best. I don't want to have to justify the substandard care being provided there. Get more for your insurance dollars, and do it elsewhere. UPDATE: 8/5/15 After posting the above review, I was contacted by the Director of Quality and offered a meeting with her and the the CEO. I admit, I was a little skeptical at first. However, I am very happy to let everyone know that both my mom and I left this meeting feeling 100% better. They listened attentively to all the details we provided, and took ample notes. Both assured us that this is NOT the quality of care they expect and demand. More importantly, though, neither spouted "the Party line." Both were incredibly disappointed and saddened at the information we provided. I was exceptionally pleased to know that steps have already been taken to address some of these very issues. That's a huge tip of the hat to the CNO for recognizing the seriousness of the issues and taking immediate action. While I can't change my moms experience (or the issues that her lack of care caused even after she was home) I CAN say that I have great faith in the ability of the management team to institute immediate and positive change. These three highly professional and compassionate women truly do care about their patients. I am looking forward to seeing all the great things they accomplish, for I truly feel that this facility has wonderful potential to help people heal and recover. Thank you, Cheryl, Kim, and Melissa--people like the three of you are the reason I continue to do what I do everyday.
