Experiencia negativa: Today around 10 am on Oct 21st 2024 I walked into this nice facility only not to be greeted by the receptionist and ignored..she seen me walked in and continued on her phone as if i wasnt there ..it wasn't until I sat down she asked me if I need assistance mind you I was standing up there the whole time and said good morning..I felt judged and picked out I came to fill out for a job..she gave real racist vibes..why I say that but she greeted ppl of other color first acknowledging them through the door and she was real short with me..then I was waiting on my ride she ask me if I needed anything else as though I had to leave the premises right away..I asked her politely is it bothering her I'm sitting here?..people just don't know what ppl are going through I was treated poorly and I'm thinking about calling calling corporate..not that it matters..but I think they should know..if you're going to work here just know what to expect..so you can better handle yourself

Experiencia negativa: September 29, 2024 Food is even worse than worse. Breakfast, toast only at 10:30 am. Wrong meals yesterday. No grilled cheese and that was supposed to be spaghetti. Supposed to have a chicken salad sandwich, but ended up with an egg salad. Lunch did not come til 3:30 pm today. July 22, 2024 Food has gotten worse. Last week, have had four meals with burned food. Last week the spaghetti looked normal but tasted and smelt burned. Today, breakfast was French Toast which was burnt and black surface. Can not believe it even made the plate and served. This evening, the Au Gratin potato smelled and tasted burnt but looked normal. They will run out of what is on the menu and we get nothing on the menu. No sweet tea sometimes like yesterday. I am supposed to have Some French fries, but get instant mashed potatoes, which I will not consume. Have to say vegetables and fruits are great.

Experiencia negativa: Please don't place anyone you care about in this facility. Especially if they can't communicate well. My brother almost died when I pulled him out of this place from a unreported infection that had gone systemic. From a wound they were supposed to be taking care of. He was also prescribed antibiotics that he never received.

Brian Center Southpoint

Hi Jacqueline. We’re very sorry to hear about your experience as it does not reflect our commitment to care. Please contact our compliance hotline at 888-527-1910 so we can address your concerns and investigate the matter.

Experiencia negativa: Overall 5 stars for the PT/OT staff, 2 stars for the nursing/admin staff. In short, this place is only tolerable at best. If you’re only staying short term and can confidently advocate for yourself or have attentive family, you might be okay. Otherwise avoid going here or sending your loved ones here. Some positives: -There were SOME actually good staff who were kind, gentle, and on top of things. According to my relative, she was relieved when Amadu or Vera were working, and a couple others that I can't remember their names. -**PT/OT staff was exceptional.** Careful, caring, knowledgeable, patient, and even acted as a patient advocate for things that had nothing to do with them like food/basic needs that nursing staff constantly failed to do. I could tell they often seemed frustrated with nursing staff not doing what they should be. I am aware of overworked, understaffed, and generally underpaid nurses, especially those that work in a place like this. With that in mind, I kept a lot of patience for the nurses/assistants and always treated them with kindness regardless of how I felt. BUT there was behavior from nursing staff that I noticed: -Many of them have SERIOUS alarm/compassion fatigue. Alarms are CONSTANTLY going off for literally hours. On average it took my relative about 1.5 hours from pressing the button for someone to come help. Sometimes as long as 3 hours or never. -Many of them clearly don’t see the patients here as people. These people don’t try to listen to patients, don’t introduce themselves, are rough when handling patients, etc. -Some would get very defensive if I asked any questions whatsoever. And I did so as kindly as possible. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for family to want to understand what is happening and why or to voice concerns about meds, symptoms, etc. -We felt it was unsafe to leave her here for any long amount of time so we had to have family/friends constantly rotating just to be sure she got decent care. It sucks to feel like you can’t leave them there even for a day without fearing she will go hours without someone to give her just water, meds, cut her food so she can eat, change a diaper, etc. -A lot of the food was inedibly bad, and worse the nutrition was very poor with 80% or more simple carbs in every meal. I know they are probably running on super low funds, but still. Every now and then there was a decent meal but it was rare. We had to bring her something good/healthy to eat almost every day. -Admin staff seemed to just try to convince us that everything was okay instead of actually listening to our concerns and providing solutions. They would straight up lie to us about what my relative said to them or what had been done. Don't bother leaving a voicemail, they don't call back. We just had to keep calling to reach anyone. -Lots of false promises. Some examples, “I’ll give you that medicine tonight” and it never happens, “I’ll be right back to help with your food” and they never return, “I’ll get that changed on your diet” and still get served the same incorrect thing, etc. I don’t know if management needs to offer higher pay, hire more assistants, run workshops on compassion fatigue, or what. But something needs to change here. They hired a new head of nursing shortly before we left so maybe change is coming?

Experiencia negativa: I spent a month at this facility receiving rehab for a broken hip/femur fracture during the last two weeks of April/first two weeks of May. I'm writing this in the early morning of my discharge day, where I just had the worst exchange with any of the staff to date. I rang the bell for my pain medication @ 11:30 PM (which is a very poor mode of patient interaction, since you have to first wait for a non-nurse staff to tell them of your request, and then wait for the nurse to bring your medication). At 12:30 AM today, (Tuesday May14th), I rang again to say that I had never seen the nurse, and re-iterated my request for my paint med and the Robitussin I have been taking for a severe cold that I contracted while staying here. When the night nurse came in, she was abrupt and rude from the very beginning. She gave me the pain meds and told me that I wouldn't be receiving anymore tonight. When I asked about the Robitussin and she said I would have to wait until morning to receive that, and that I should have told her that I needed some. (I'd never spoken to her, only to the aide who answered my first two calls, to whom I had certainly and specifically asked for the cough medicine.) Other than this bad interaction with the staff, the aides and nurses have been very polite and professional, even though they are overworked and the facility is understaffed, which greatly impacted my receiving my pain meds on a consistent schedule, which led to my pain levels getting ahead of the delivery of the medication. That, and the lack of consistency of timing as to when I would receive my PT and be able to schedule my medication ASAP after PT made for very uncomfortable minutes/hours in pain. As far as the OT and PT staff, they were outstanding, and get a separate 5 star review from me. Regarding the food, for my entire stay here I ate two meals, both of them breakfast, and had my meals delivered by my family/friends for the length of my stay. Still, for each meal I had a tray delivered which I refused, (except for the breakfast juice every morning). This was not only a waste of food, it further extended the work overload on the staff. During my month here, the patient population on my wing dwindled from almost full at the time of my arrival to less than a third full today. Despite this fact, the availability of staff has been consistently poor, which makes me wonder if some of the staff had been asked not to come in as the population dwindled. Sad to say, my overall impression of the facility is that it is that it is a business first and foremost, with a poorly designed and executed management plan for the stated purpose of offering healing to their patients coming in a distant second. I'm grateful to have Social Security benefits and supplemental insurance to cover my costs here, because at daily rates of almost a thousand dollars, the inadequate care available here isn't worth that amount of money.

Experiencia negativa: ZERO stars if it were available. I had a client there as I manage her care. 1. She was given some food that she was allergic to and the staff had to give her Benadryl 2. NEVER try to call out there, no one answers the phone. 3. We were contacted by the Facility saying this patient had a doctor's appt the next day and someone needed to meet her at the appointment. We rearranged our work schedules to accommodate and the day of the appointment, the facility did not take her to. I called the facility and after 15 mins, finally got in touch with someone at front desk. My client was STILL in her bed and missed her appointment . 4. This place has dropped the ball on so many things it is hard to list. 5. Requested an appointment for my client to have an injection in her knee for her knee pain when she first went there. 2 months later... No appointment was ever made 6. Rehab director pushes her own agenda on the families and was quite hostile when we were making discharge plans. 7. THERE IS NO SOCIAL WORKER there. Seems they cannot keep one as they are quite overworked.

Experiencia fantástica: I like the fact that the therapy team is always so willing to help me with anything I need. The therapist I work with are Eddie, Michael and Vanessa and they have helped me so much. The whole team is A++++. The Director is awesome and she always checks on me and is happy. I am paralyzed on my left side and because of them I can move so much better. They are so caring and kind and they make me laugh. This therapy team is the BEST you will ever find. I’m so lucky I chose Southpoint for my Rehab. They are so creative with their treatment. Sometimes I don’t even know I’m doing speech therapy. She has me singing and playing games. I hope one day I can come back and volunteer.

Brian Center Southpoint

Hi Tina! Thank you for your wonderful review! We're delighted to hear that our therapy team, especially Eddie, Michael, and Vanessa, has made such a positive impact on your rehabilitation journey. Your kind words mean a lot to us, and we're grateful for the opportunity to support you. If there's anything else we can do for you, please let us know.

Experiencia fantástica: The 5 Stars are strictly for the therapy team more specifically for Eddie, Mike, and Maddie they are astounding with my mother every time they work with her. My mom came in unable to move her left side due to a stroke now she is able to move her leg when even the doctors didn’t think it would be possible I truly appreciate everything they have done for my mother. And Maddie who isn’t even one of the therapist in charge of my mother she still takes time out to help her and tape her shoulder up when it’s needed

Brian Center Southpoint

Thank you for your wonderful review, Dayna! We're thrilled to hear about the outstanding care Eddie, Mike, and Maddie provided to your mother. Their dedication and expertise have made a remarkable difference in her recovery. We'll make sure to pass on your appreciation to them. We're honored to be part of her journey to wellness.

Experiencia positiva: The rehab staff/facility here are the real deal, but daily care is not great. There are some great staff as there are with any facility but many staff you feel like you’re bothering them to have your loved one taking care of or a call bell responded to. Food is hit or miss with no real choice for dining options.

Brian Center Southpoint

We appreciate your feedback and are glad to hear that you found our rehab staff and facility to be excellent. We take your comments about daily care and staff responsiveness seriously and will address these concerns internally to ensure a better experience for our residents and their families. Your input about dining options is also noted, and we'll work on providing more choices for our residents. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Experiencia negativa: If I could give less than a 1-star I would, mother was sent here TWICE, first time she was sent here she had just recovered from her stroke and was seeking occupational therapy and physical therapy. Due to the neglect of the nurses she ended up getting a bed sore, afterwards the hospital sent my mother back to the rehab a second time and I found my mother getting 2 more sores on her and seeing her right hand was swollen along with what looked like a burn mark! I immediately removed my mother from the facility and filed a complaint to the hospital to NEVER return her to this place again! All they did was have her lay there since they couldn't give her any physical therapy and she wasn't properly taken care of as they claimed.

Brian Center Southpoint

We sincerely apologize for falling short of your expectations and for any distress caused to your mother during her time with us. We take your feedback very seriously and would like to address your concerns directly to ensure that such issues are resolved and improvements are made. Please reach out to our Compliance Department at 888-527-1910 so we can learn more about the specific details of your experience and take appropriate action. Experiencia negativa: DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE. Send your enemies if you truly wish them ill. I would give this place zero stars if it were possible. Negligent and indifferent to patients’ needs. My 80 year old father was here for less than 4 weeks and fell and broke his wrist. My 80 year old mother had been caring for him at home, mostly alone, for years and he never had an injury. He fell in the morning and was given only Tylenol the entire day. When my mom visited later that day, his wrist was swollen and he said it was painful (for my father to admit something is painful means it’s time for the emergency room immediately!). They didn’t have anyone available to evaluate whether it might be broken and didn’t bother taking him to the ER until 8:00 that night. This was during the week, so regular staff should have been available. The next day, my mother couldn’t get in touch with anyone at the nursing home to find out whether he was brought back there or still at the hospital. We took him out that day to have his wrist re-bandaged, and when the nursing home found out we may not have him back by 12:00 midnight (because we had to go an ER), they told us he would lose his room and we’d have to resubmit all the paperwork again. Oops, too bad. As if we’d willingly bring him back here anyway!! The nurses could not seem less interested in helping anyone. The CNAs are the only people who care about patients and providing care. There are call bells going off non-stop and no urgency from any staff. Terrible place if you actually need care. If a resident is relatively mobile and has fewer care requirements, maybe they’d be OK. Do not go here unless you have no other options.

Brian Center Southpoint

Laure, we're sorry to hear about your father's experience, and we appreciate you sharing your concerns. We take this seriously and are actively looking into the incidents you mentioned. We want to discuss this further with you. Please get in touch with our Compliance Department at 888-527-1910.

Experiencia negativa: Stayed here once with my grandmother and discharged her immediately the next day the NAs are over worked like slaves at night. the residents barely have snacks a 1000$ per night and you only get oatmeal pies, saltines, peanut crackers and water the nurses are lazy and don’t answer call bells. I woke up hearing call bells going off and took a video of a nurse sitting on her phone while 5 lights were going off.I watched a nurse walk right pass the patient to find the aide who was working with someone else just to tell her that the bells were going off and the patient only needed medicine. I asked the aide what was going on she told me that the Na did not come in that night and that they changed the schedule and told me the nurse had not did her rounds which meant my grandmother had not received her medication on time. I asked her what did she think of the place and she told me that she would not be returning bc the building lacked structure and leadership. then proceeded to point down the hall at the male charge nurse yelling and cursing at the nurses station she told me that nurses have had affairs in closets, the DON and scheduler almost fighting and nurses with fb accounts recording in the building. While I was here that night a random man kept falling asleep in the hall and a random woman walking room to room with a baby doll. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANYONE YOU LOVE HERE!!!! TO THE OWNER: BEING THAT I CANNOT RESPOND Oh please You’re not even there ; and I know this because I was looking for your to discuss my concerns. You clearly only care about money and nothing more .You know that not having food or care products is considered to be neglect. My Grandmother arrived in your facility right after hip surgery and when we hi-tailed it out of Alcatraz she still hadn’t got any pain meds only 1 Tylenol! While I was there a Lady named MS Price fell and almost knocked herself out! It took them a minute to get her up and they didn’t even send her to the hospital! I know that can’t be protocol!I work in healthcare.; so I am very familiar with protocols! With that being said : Thanks but no thanks for for bouquet of nice words. This is the Alcatraz for the elderly; This is a true depiction of neglect, financial ,physical and emotional neglect to the elderly. How much do you guys pay the State to stay in business? Durham is supposed to be the City of Medicine this place is a house of horrors. Shut It Don! Save some lives and heartbreak !

Brian Center Southpoint

Hi Brick, we want you to know that we are committed to providing the highest standard of care, and we regret that we fell short of your expectations. We would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about your specific concerns so that we can address them directly and work towards improvements. Experiencia negativa: This place is chaotic and unorganized. My Dad was sent there yesterday afternoon for a short term rehabilitation stay. They told us he would be in one room and when we got to said room there was already a patient there. When we asked they said "just put him in ***". "JUST" put him, like he is nothing of their concern. They never got my Dad the cup of water he asked for. My Dad has limited mobility on his left side, so he requires assistance getting around. It look someone 20 minutes to answer the call bell!! He is on several medications and he did not get the most important one because they did not have it in house!! These are the conditions they are operating under. Please please if you have the option, do NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE!! They only got a 1 because I had to rate it. This place needs to be shut down!!! SHUT. IT. DOWN. They do not care about our loved ones.

Experiencia negativa: I gave One Star because I was required to rate. I wouldn't give them 1/5 this star if they choice were available. This place sucks!! Never will I reccommend this place of business for care of a Loved One. My parent fell outside and when PT came in that morning, they took him in and began working with him - never letting the nurse know of the fall for at least 3 hours. My parent caled me which is ow I found out. When speaking with the Nirse, she informed me that the PA had just told her - again, 3 hours after the fall. No one called me, the POA, to let me know anything. I asked the Nurse would her report reflect that which she'd told me and I was never given an answer - I was told she had other patient's and did nothave time to sit there and argue with me. Never will I suggest this dirty facility. Not only was the NUrse rude,so was the Director of Nursing, never looking at me as I voiced my concerns about my parent who'd fallen. I asked for the report...never got it. But they did manage to discharge him the next day with no home health set up...they kicked him out after being there for less than a week and blamed it on the insurance company not paying for his rehabilitation post-surgery. Never will I suggest this the best place for a dog. The food - cold - no matter the meal. Ridiculous...and hos second stay was no better. I wish the State would investigate because they mean no good to any patient within its walls. Not opinion - it's a fact. My dad has suffered at the hands of their negligences - both stays. Don't get me started on his wound dressings...they are so incompetent and unsanitary. That's all I will say on that. This place sucks!!!!

Experiencia negativa: I'm very disappointed in this facility. My father has had several surgeries in the last few months and is a serious fall risk. So tell me why he fell 4 times with one time hitting his head? Why was my mother told that padding could be put on the floor by his bed, but then they told her its a tripping hazard for the nurses. We have pictures of bruising on his arms, back and butt and he also has several unexplained cuts on his arm and elbows. When asked what happened the staff say they don't know and laugh. I think the staff at this facility have lost their reason and passion for joining a healthcare field. How can you let people sit in their own filth and just sit on your phone in a dark hallway?

Experiencia negativa: Run as far as you can away from this place. My Mom was there and the care she received was terrible. The staff are rude and uncaring and then make it 100% worse because they lie about what is being done to cover their incompetence.

Experiencia negativa: Mother was there for rehab after hip fracture. I wouldn’t send my worst enemy there. The nurses and aides are worthless mean rude people. My mother had to beg for a shower. We had to go in to give her a shower ourselves. She got a bedsore which was never added to MyChart and was basically hidden from family. That is considered neglect, and that sums up that facility-neglectful…The food is actual pig slop. And don’t ask for something else or you get a raw English muffin thrown at you. Meetings that were supposedly going to happen with patient and family were “forgotten” and never happened. Rehab is almost non-existent. Please don’t send a loved one there. All these negative reviews are 100% true! They seem unbelievable but they aren’t.

Brian Center Southpoint

I apologize for your recent negative experience. We have looked into the matter and we are unable to locate any records with your name or of a family member. Additionally, our facility does not have the MyChart system or serve English muffins. Is it possible that this review was intended for another establishment? We would appreciate it if you could provide us with more information as to the nature of your experience so we can further investigate. Please call our compliance hotline at 888.527.1910 at your earliest convenience to enable us to follow up on your concerns.

Experiencia negativa: This place need to shut down!! This opinion is based on true neglect and abuse of the elderly. Most of staff are rude and management are not responsive to return calls or handling concerns. My loved one is at the brink of death after 2 weeks in that facility. He arrived for rehab needs only but due to neglect of staff to provide assistance and care needed he is now fighting for his life!!!

Brian Center Southpoint

Linda, We are so sorry to hear about your loved one's health at our Southpoint Rehabilitation and Healthcare facility. Our highest priority is always to provide excellent care for our residents. We take any allegation of neglect seriously and will investigate deeply any information provided to us. We are very disturbed that your experience has been anything less than what we strive for during a stay here with us. We'd like the opportunity to discuss this with you, please reach out to us at 888.527.1910 at your earliest convenience.

Experiencia negativa: I think the staff are in the wrong position. They moved my sister from her room because they don't like a patient, her roommate. As silly as that sounds that is exactly what happened. I think it needs newer staffing. And somehow the staff finds out who is paying and they are treated better than the Medicaid patients. Not right. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Period.

Brian Center Southpoint

Thank you for bringing your sister's experience to our attention. We apologize if the move wasn't explained clearly and we understand how unsettling that can be. At Southpoint Rehabilitation and Healthcare, we strive to provide a safe, comfortable environment for all of our patients, no matter their financial situation. Our staff is committed to delivering high-quality care with respect and compassion. Your feedback will also help guide us in providing the quality of care our residents deserve moving forward.

Experiencia negativa: I wish I could give less than 1 star, a family member of mine was not treated right at all here! He had to be transported back to the hospital twice during his time here, under staffed and majority of them seem to care less, when I clean out my family members items from here it was obvious nobody had even cleaned the room or anything and the patient had been gone well over 24 hrs. Not clean or friendly place, if you or someone you know is thinking about going here my best advice would be to find somewhere else quickly!

Brian Center Southpoint

Dylan, We take all reviews very seriously, particularly when it comes to the healthcare of our patients. We will use your review to improve our standards and ensure that we are providing the best level of care at all times. Our team is committed to making sure every patient receives quality care, with respect, dignity and concern for their well-being at the heart of everything we do. We will have a compliance team member reach out to you to discuss this matter further.

Experiencia negativa: The nurses and other stuff are not properly trained. The staff are rude and just overall unpleasant, you may get a few nice staff but that is rare! There have been many wrongful incidents that has taken place within the first week there. The way they have been treating my family member and how they have been addressing me and my family concerns is very distasteful of the center overall! Currently looking move my family member! I would not recommend this place to anyone!

Brian Center Southpoint

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We take all feedback seriously and are terribly sorry to discover that it has been a negative one. Experiencia negativa: The only reason this place deserves one star is due to the kind, compassionate and competent occupational and physical therapists. Otherwise, Southpoint rehab (former Brian Center) is a house of horrors! Patients laying in their soiled undergarments for hours, no schedule for meals, aides who repeatedly ignore call buttons, and filthy conditions in patient rooms. Yes, the outside looks nice and shiny, and entry hallways are clean. But once you step beyond that, it’s a cacophony of unanswered call buttons, staff huddled in personal chats, and sad, resigned patients wandering the halls in wheelchairs. Management is beyond incompetent. The right hand does not talk to the left. There are no schedules, or if they exist, they are ignored. A doctor or PA/NP is supposed to make daily rounds. My mom saw a PA maybe 3 times in over a month. She was there for over 4 weeks and received a grand total of 3 showers when she was supposed to get 2 showers per week. I saw one of the permanent residents begging staff for a shower – how sad!! It makes me angry to think that all of these supposed services are probably still billed to Medicare and Medicaid, when in effect none of it happened. Oh, and don’t bother to ask for documentation. Thank God that we were there to advocate for our mother, as her medication was mismanaged and she would have suffered serious health consequences had we not stepped in. But what about those who are there without advocates? What a horrifying state of affairs. Maybe management will blame their issues on summer (staff) vacations? Or maybe on their recent transition to new ownership? Not so – it’s just incompetence. If you have a choice, stay away from this place!! You are better off staying ANYWHERE else.

Brian Center Southpoint

We regret to hear about your experience with Southpoint Rehabilitation and Healthcare and we apologize if it did not live up to your expectations. We strive to provide our patients with the care they deserve, and it is our policy to ensure meals are served on time and that all patients’ hygiene needs are met. We take this feedback seriously and will follow-up internally with our staff and management team to address these issues. If you have any additional questions or would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Experiencia negativa: My grandmother was here and as a family member of someone here and a CNA I wouldn’t suggest it. The CNA’s are really great but that’s about it. It’s impossible to get in touch with anyone about anything. The cleanliness is a ZERO. it smells awful throughout the facility, strong smell of urine. They put random peoples clothes on my grandmother all the time even though she had changes of clothes there. They would put random peoples clothes on her laundry and when we would say something about it, they would reply with “that happens all the time” like it was a joke. If you hit the call button, it would take up to 30 minutes for someone to come check on the patient. My grandmother ended up going into the hospital and while she was there, the staff packed up her room and put all her things in storage “because they needed the bed”. I do understand this, however the family should have cleaned out her room. Since the staff did, 98% of her things were missing and they have yet to locate them. We got her magazines and 2 shirts back. All of her clothes are missing. The staff do NOT care anything at all about the people getting treated here. I would see patients who are wearing oxygen outside smoking and no one would stop them and that is extremely dangerous. Find somewhere else to go.

Brian Center Southpoint

Thank you for taking the time to review Southpoint Rehabilitation and Healthcare. We are sorry to hear that your grandmother had a negative experience while staying with us.We strive to provide a safe and clean environment, as well as prompt care for our residents. Experiencia fantástica: While I am new to this facility, I am not new to long term care. All facilities have challenges with finding and refining staff but I am pleased to be part of a team that truly cares. It is regretful that despite multiple levels of communication being offered and promoted, some people prefer to write negative reviews without working with us to try to resolve any issue. My management philosophy is to work together in partnership with our residents, families, care teams and vendors through a collaborative approach. When issues or concerns arise, as they often do, we need to be made aware of it as close to the event as possible so we can ensure that we can address the individual or process involved. Together we can make the corrective action and ensure that we reach resolution quickly. We fully appreciate that families deal with guilt of placement and the loss of independence for their loved one. We also work to educate residents and families that we are not a hospital and certain requested measures are not allowed due to potential for harm. We are here to try to help work through any concerns. We try to hire the best and most compassionate staff to achieve this goal. Thank you for working with us. If you have a good or great experience please tell everyone. But if you have a concern please talk to me or our team so we can work to resolve it as soon as possible. Our goal continues to be your satisfaction and good outcomes for those entrusted to our care.

Brian Center Southpoint

Thank you for your review and kind words. At our facility, we fully understand the emotional toll that long-term care can have on residents and their families. We strive to create a supportive environment that encourages collaboration and cooperation between everyone involved. Thank you for making a difference!

Experiencia negativa: My dad died here and the staff could not be less unemotional and robotic about it. They need serious sensitivity training. His death was not expected and they basically harassed us about “the body” the day of his death, as we scrambled to figure something out. He asked to go to the hospital about 90 minutes to 2 hours before his death, and they denied him. They just said a doctor would be there in the morning. Conveniently, it’s not in the nursing notes either. He had been transported from the hospital less than 18 hours before his death and they did not notify us his personal belongings were missing, so we had no idea he didn’t have his cell phone. He was in a room without a phone, and he could not stand on his own, so he could not call for help. We brought him clothes and books and those are also missing. I think it’s a great shame the VA partners with this facility. Please do everything you can to get your family members away from here. I do not live locally and am regretting not moving closer to keep a better eye on him. Just editing to tell everyone reading this that the generic response I received below when your family member dies in this facility’s care is exactly that. My dad DIED, he didn’t have a less than good experience. He DIED. They are not interested in changing. They are not interested anything other than getting their VA contract and leeching off of our system. Money and business first, patients an afterthought. Your family is NOT SAFE HERE. They edit Jon Salter’s review because I think the 5 stars are all burner accounts so that review comes before mine. They want to hide how horrible they are. RUN FROM HERE.

Brian Center Southpoint

Erinn, we are disappointed to hear that your dad did not have a more positive experience with us at Southpoint Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Experiencia fantástica: I work at the Brian Center, and I chose to work with our therapists when I had some back pain. Experiencia fantástica: I must say at first I was a little skeptical about putting my Mom here, as time went on I realized we mad the right decision for my Mom health and services she was receiving at South Point Rehab. Experiencia negativa: It's pretty and fancy but that's about it. I'll update if anything changes. Right now I'm hating it. Very understaffed. No one seems to be able to answer questions. Impossible to get someone on the phone. My dad has become unable to answer the phone himself and sometimes it takes over 24 hours to reach someone to see if he's OK. I just feel like my family is getting the run around by this place and I'm very worried for my dad. They don't listen to the people who know the patient best.

Experiencia negativa: Awful Physical Therapy Department! The PT Department needs an overhaul either in the way it is operated or its staff. My father went into rehab at the Brian Center in December 2021 to strengthen his walking and came out 6 weeks later in worse shape. I visited on a Saturday, continually checked on him in rehab and not once during the entire hour, was he walking. What?! His legs gave out 7 times during his first two weeks home so the aides called the Rescue Squad to lift him; soon we rented a lift machine to get him off the floor. Ironically by his fourth week at home, he was able to walk farther and stand longer because we had him do exercises every day. The Brian Center is a waste of time and money! The VA should pull their contract from here immediately.

Experiencia negativa: Horrible!!! My husband arrived at The Brian Center after major brain surgery for rehab. His medicine NEVER arrived in the 48 hours I had him there. He cried in pain and begged for his pain relief( was on pain management at Duke). I was told his meds weren’t available so they had to “borrow” some from other patients!!! Totally horrible experience. I called 911 and had him taken out of there immediately! Unethical practices, rude nurses, and staff. Do not put your loved ones in this facility!!!!

Experiencia negativa: Nurses were nice but very understaffed so unable to care for the residents as they needed. The rehab director Lisa had an attitude with the family from the first day. She constantly talked down to us and disregarded the things we brought up to her. She also didn't fight for insurance to extend the stay at the Brian Center (which is part of her job) and overall was an awful person to talk to even though she's been there for "over 15 years". Wish that someone who should be advocating for patients actually cared and didn't brush off family. Rehab staff was great except for Lisa.

Experiencia positiva: Where do,I start? Yes,they have the best rehab department. The physical therapy dept.is very dedicated to their residents, they are very well trained, knowledgeable and dedicated to giving you their best. As far as the rest of the facility...Let's say looks are deceiving. Yes,the building is nice and that's all the administrator cares about. The Director Of Nursing could careless about the care that is recieved there. All she care about is...Nothing! How can you give good care...Being over worked and under staffed. A ratio of 18 to 1for a nursing assistant. Management talks to the staff rudely and unprofessionally. They will promise you the world to get you in the door. This place needs new management with fresh new ideas and passion for their employees and residents.

Experiencia negativa: Totally What a disappointment to be the brian center of southpoint. What I experienced from a visit to see a loved one. The staff/patient ratio is not balanced. My loved one had to lay there for hours before a change of undergarments. Unfortunate for anyone who can't get theirself to a bedside toilet. No fresh water in a container only able to get it upon request. One night pressed the call button and no response for hours. Totally unacceptable. Strong urine odor in halls. Experiencia fantástica: After spending 5 weeks at Duke Hospital following a horrendous car-bicycle accident, I was eventually transferred to the Brian Center. After my arrival, a small staff meeting was held and one of the questions raised was whether or not Mr. Vail would ever be able to walk again. Little worry!. The therapeutic staff was simply wonderful in assisting my rehabilitation. Although I was anxious to get better, they knew when to push me and they kept at it. Eventually I not only re-learned to walk again, I was able to go to the bathroom unassisted. I feel that those at the Center gave me my life back again and I am eternally grateful for their wonderful care. Dr. James Vail

Experiencia fantástica: Brian Center did a fantastic job with rehabilitating my sister. She had a stroke and couldn’t speak or move the left side of her body. She was in the hospital for 5 days, then at Brian Center for 4 months. (A doctor told me he can’t recommend skilled nursing facilities, but said, “I sent my mother-in-law to Brian Center, and I like her!”) The physical, occupational, and speech therapists are truly outstanding (in particular, Courtney, Kaylee, Tom, Donna, Al, Matt). When she was in the hospital I was able to understand 1-3 words all day and now she speaks slowly but clearly. Her left leg is much stronger. She can safely stand and pivot and sit down and she can walk short distances with assistance. Her left arm and hand are becoming usable. UNC Hospital recommended a physiatrist, who injected Botox into her left leg and arm and that is miraculously making her muscles more flexible and making it easier for therapists to help her get stronger and more flexible. Some of the aides were abrupt but others were incredibly kind and caring (Jasmine, Lachonda, Mr. T, Sarah, Anita). The food isn’t very good, but she went to Brian Center for rehab – to re-learn how to speak and use her left leg, arm and hand. When she got there I truly didn’t know whether she would ever be able to do that again, and the therapists at Brian Center made that possible. I can’t recommend them more highly.

Brian Center Southpoint

Meredith, we really appreciate your positive review! Your recommendation means so much to us and we're so happy to have earned it. Thank you again for taking the time to let others know about your positive experience. Have a great day!

Experiencia negativa: I currently stay here at the Brian center and I must say this is the worse experience I have had being cared for if you have a spinal cord injury this is most definitely not the place for you. This place is a hit and miss more concerned about the flowers and lawn care than the needs of most patients. You have to fight just to go outside in the designated area and they make a big deal about that. Everything starts with leadership the cna feel under appreciated by the management which leads them to not work the best they can plus they are always short staffed ALWAYS and not to mention Ginger ale is considered medicine now because I have to get a Doctor order just to get a can

She had an involuntary bowel movement in the middle of the night and the assistant stated to my mother "oh this is too much! I am going home" and LEFT my Mother dirty and humiliated until another nurse came in to take of her! My mother is very alert and this was completely dehumanizing for her. Experiencia positiva: --Update: they responded and have agreed to allow hospice care starting tomorrow. I'm changing my review from 2 stars to 4 in the expectation that good care will continue. -- Brian Center is refusing to allow my mother access to Hospice care while her long-term Medicaid status is pending. The hospice care team is authorized by the oncologist but Brian Center refuses to let them enter. That makes no sense because hospice is billed to Medicare and has no relevance to Medicaid. It's cruel to deny a terminally ill patient access to hospice services. The short-term post-hospital rehab here was excellent. Unfortunately the business office seems to prioritize profit over compassion on the long-term care side.

Experiencia negativa: I wouldn't board my dog here if I didn't have to. All of my sister's doctors are desperately trying to help me get her moved...since the covid crisis, I can't even get in to help. And they've wanted her out as badly as I have; she'd only been in five days before they found out when Medicare stopped making full payments and they've asked her when she's leaving every day since. Experiencia positiva: I helped care for a friend who was there for the last 4 weeks of his life. The staff were kind and helpful. like most facilities they are very short staffed so their response time is often slow. All the residents have intensive needs and so it is hard for everyone. When hospice became involved the facility was cooperative. The business office was generous in helping a service connected veteran stay in a private room for the short time he was there. The most remarkable was the transition people who work to help people get admitted. 2 people Diane and Rebecca made it possible for my friend to be admitted there before the horrible facility where he was succeeded in killing him. I assure you I am not exaggerating about their wonderful efforts or the horrible conditions of the facility that they helped him leave. All of this was accomplished dealing with the VA. this is no easy task.

Jeannette, we are very happy we could provide you and your friend with a positive experience! Your recommendation means so much to us as we always strive to provide quality service to every resident and patient! Thank you again for your feedback, have a great day!

Experiencia negativa: Some excellent staff members, especially in physiotherapy! Thumbs up to Eddie and Michael!!!! Great nurses and other members of the staff, for the most part. However, some are angry employees and should be removed from the facility! Food ranges from delicious to barely satisfactory. Portion sizes too small for adult men; I lost weight eating their meals. I am finally gaining it back. Covid has made living at Brian Center difficult ; but that is true all over the U.S. Loud and unruly patients need to be separated from the rest of the residents.

Experiencia positiva: My mother spent about three weeks here. Very difficult times, so I understand the safety and security measures and that COVID has created an atmosphere where things might be understaffed and hectic. I appreciate those who took care of her while she was there, but there are definitely some things that should be addressed. When she was discharged after three weeks, I was shocked at what I saw. Two attendants literally had to stuff her almost lifeless body into my car. Her leg muscles had shrunken considerably as well as one of her arm muscles. Apparently, if someone comes by to ask if you want to go for a walk, a late response or no response indicates a "refusal" and they move on to the next person. For a person with brain cancer, presenting an option like that and expecting them to be excited about the prospect is unreasonable. She got moved to different rooms, one of which rendered it impossible to see her through the window because of the location of the room. It would have been nice to have been notified of this before I showed up, only to find that I couldn't see her. Upon being discharged and going through her belongings when we returned home, I noticed that her iPad was missing. Calls were made, phone number was left, and to this day still have not heard back from them and this has not been resolved. So, while I appreciate that they kept her alive and fed her and provided some care for the time she was there, was not happy with some of the other things.

Experiencia fantástica: My wife, Jennifer Blachly, has twice been a patient at The Brian Center. Both times she has had so many good things to say about the physical therapy department, as well as the nursing staff. One of her nurses, Ms. Norma Evans, stands out to both of us as particularly kind, caring, and compassionate. I stayed with my wife several days and nights and personally witnessed how hard Norma works. She always made sure my wife got all her medication on time, especially her pain meds, and ensured that she didn't suffer needlessly. If my wife wasn't in her room, Norma would hunt her down in the building to bring her meds to her. Norma is a standout nurse and we felt incredibly lucky that she was my wife's carer. Thank you Brian Center for hiring such capable people.

Experiencia fantástica: I have either worked in, or with this facility for almost 17 years, and I can say, this is the best of the best. Don and Vickie take the facility care very seriously, and do everything within their power to make sure a residents stay is as close to perfect as it can be. Much can be said about the longevity of the leadership in this facility, the Administrator Don, Director of Nursing Vickie, Rehab Program Manager Lisa and many others have been in their roles for as long as I have been affiliated with this facility. Frequent winners of the company's prestigious CEO Round-table Award, Blue Ribbon winners, and frequent deficiency free State Survey results. All examples of their focus, dedication and determination to make Brian Center Southpoint a truly spectacular facility. I have said many times, if I ever have to place my parents, I wouldn't trust their care to any one else.

Experiencia fantástica: Outstanding support from all staff. Extremely friendly, courteous and kind. Patients are number one priority here. All staff listen and respond to any concerns given immediately. All patient needs are addressed and family is involved in care of patient. Always notified of any issues and recommendations always welcome. PT, OT work as a great team in the recouperation of the patient. Staff extremely friendly and caring. My husband arrived not being able to do any of his care or walk. He is leaving walking and able to do his own care. Dietary Department addressed all issues and needs while he was here with an excellent selection of food. My husband really enjoyed sitting on the front porch and enjoyed the flowers. Very uplifting environment for patients. Room was very well equipped, as well as, they allowed me to bring my husbands dog to visit him. My husbands Ambassador (Linda Cassara) was always there for us and went above and beyond to help us during our stay. I would strongly recommend this facility to anyone who needs this type of extensive rehab care.

Brian Center Southpoint

Vickie, thank you for your praise and kind comments about our team and your husband's ambassador. We truly appreciate you taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!

Experiencia fantástica: I was a patient at The Brian Center and became an outpatient after leaving because the therapy team was soooo great, especially Cape, both Rachels, and Stephanie . I would be where I am today without their help. Most days they would even brink by breakfast in to kick-start the day for therapy.

Brian Center Southpoint

Margaret, your wonderful feedback and rating mean a lot to us. Thank you so much for your kind comments about our team as well. Experiencia fantástica: I spent about a year in this facility nearly 4-5 days a week. Facility was always clean, smelled great, and the staff was always smiling and friendly. The administrator and DON were often seen on the floor and willingly participated in the Ambassador program! I would recommend this facility for long term care or short term rehab!

Experiencia fantástica: This review refers to the short term rehab side of the center. I can't comment on the long term side because I never saw it and therefore cannot give an opinion. That being said, I liked my time in rehab. I have been there twice & fell in love with the staff. From the nurses to the administrators, from the ambassadors to the therapists, almost everyone treated me like a member of a family. Especially the therapists - despite the physical pain I was in, I really did enjoy going to the gym because everyone there was kind, friendly, and genuinely wanted to see me get better. Deepti, Tom, Julia, Brandy, Stephanie, the two Rachels, the two Kims, Al, Michael, Eddie, Cape, Matt and Nate -if I've forgotten anyone forgive me. But these people are wonderful at their job and I'd be blessed to call any of them a friend. Nate gave me a compliment one day that meant the world to me and inspired me to be better in every way. I'll be grateful to him forever for that. I also got especially close to Deepti and Tom while I was there and was almost sad when I had to leave because I knew I'd miss seeing their smiling faces every day. But back to the review of the facility itself. Every room has its own air conditioner, which as a person who runs hot, I was very grateful for. Most rooms have their own bathroom and shower but not all. If you want to be sure you will get that I recommend asking before being admitted. Some rooms are nicer than others - I found that if you're on the side with carpeting, your room will be nicer. Their are no odd smells or elderly folks passed out in their wheelchairs. All rooms have their own televisions and are equipped with WiFi. The beds are comfortable. And they will bring in a rolloway bed so that loved ones may stay the night (or several nights) with you. Every room had a closet with a key and a small safe in the closet with its own key where you can store valuables. I also enjoyed that I was allowed to order groceries, shelf stable things like six packs of Sprite and snacks. They don't allow a mini refrigerator however. The nurses are mostly amazing as well. Norma, Mary, Mirica, and Gary are superstars. Despite having a huge number of patients, they still manage to get their meds out on time and accurately. I love them all for taking such good care of me. There are a few problems that need addressing and one of them is that it takes a very long time sometimes for the call bell to be answered and even when it is answered, the CNA most often takes a long time to fulfill your request. I once waited 45 minutes. This is not always true. There are some superstars there, including Tiffany, Tasha, Anita, Cat, Shaunita, Kahlia and a few whose names are completely escaping me. These CNAs are amazing and truly care about their patients. Another issue is the food. They really need to hire better cooks and keep better stock. Several times I was served a slice of white bread, referred to as a "dinner roll" on the menu. Often their food tastes like it came from a box and cooked in the microwave. At breakfast they have grits every. single. day. I wish they'd change it up and serve oatmeal or cream of wheat on occasion. There is also no menu for diabetics and the meals are often carb heavy. When I asked for a diabetic menu I was told everybody gets the same food. There is the option of an alternate tray of food but it is often just as bad. I lived on Raisin Bran and PB and J during my stay there, and while certainly not ideal, I knew that my time in the gym would help keep my blood sugar in check. I did run into a few personnel problems while there, but they were few and far between. Most of the staff will make you feel comfortable. James, the admissions administrator, went above and beyond for me several times. And despite my few gripes, I found The Brian Center to be a warm, inviting place. I think the people complaining about this place have never been to a rehab facility. The Brian Center is a palace compared to some of the other places in the area which can only be described as a hole. I can't recommend it more.

Brian Center Southpoint

Experiencia fantástica: I want to thank the staff at The Brian Center Southpoint for taking such great care of my father, Buzz S the two times he was admitted for falling. I want to give a special thanks to the following who I had the most interaction with. First and foremost, Gary who went over and beyond the call of duty in providing incredible care, respect, compassion and laughed at all my Dad's jokes and made him smile! Ditto for Dorothy who covered for Gary and my Dad raved about. Sue who was so compassionate and provided guidance on how to navigate Dad's care post discharge. Tee Tee who helped with his hygiene, personal assistance and always greeted him with a smile and of course laughed at his jokes. PT/ OT- If I'm forgetting anyone's names apologies! My Dad spoke about Big AL, Tom, Courtney & Rachel who kept on my Dad to do his exercises and improve. Abigail, the dietitian who immediately came to see me regarding my father's diet which was a renal/ low sodium one after he was given the choice of a sausage or hotdog ( No Bueno Brian Ctr corporate!) and went over menu options with us. Treco who gave me her cell phone and was so quick to follow up and be so wonderfully helpful. The Care Team who my sister and I met with was clearly compassionate and offered the best advice and feedback. Finally Courtney who was our point of contact and helped so wonderfully with my father's discharge, arranging hospital equipment and her responsiveness. The minuses and this is for corporate. For a rehab facility geared towards the recovery of patients and well being of your staff, to have incessant , stressful loud siren to alert your staff to a patients needs is absolutely horrific! I can't imagine what that does to your staff's central nervous system. I would imagine the long term effects of hearing that 8+ hours a day does. I needed a drink after leaving the first time. The first time i heard it I thought your facility was on lock down due to an active shooter. Spend the money and replace it! Shame on you if you don't. Your staff and patients deserve to recover and work in a clean, quiet environment.

Experiencia fantástica: The team of physical and occupational therapists at the Brian Center at Southpoint is exceptional. My husband worked with three therapists in particular -- Rachel Sammons, Trey Washington, and Tom Cogdell -- although there were others he saw for a short time, and we both managed to observe the rest of the team at work. All of them impressed us with their expertise, their knowledge, and their loving care. With their understanding of the body and how it works, they were constantly judging how far to push the patient, given his physical needs as well as his current goals. This required of the therapists a familiarity with each patient as well as the ability to extrapolate from their vast learning the information necessary to design a specific program for each one. We observed time and again many of the patients, inspired by and responding to his therapist by doing the best job he could do. We saw -- and benefited from -- the real value of the teamwork between the patient and the therapist.

Experiencia negativa: This place is straight trash. They killed my grandmother! The nurses are lazy and they take their sweet time tending to the patients in there! The human resource department is a joke. You call and complain and they only treat your loved one worst. If you care about your loved one, do not send them here to this facility!

Experiencia negativa: My mother was admitted to Brian Center in Durham after a 3 month hospital stay for rehab to return to her prior functional status. I would love to give more than one star, but I cannot. Issues we experienced while there: -Room cleanliness: floors were carpeted with a major smell (present on admission so it was not my mom). The showers clearly had mold in the grout of the tile and were overall very dingy. The chairs were upholstered and had stains on them. I can only imagine they were the stains of incontinence. Of note, when I complained about this issue we were moved to a room with hard wood floors and cleaner bathroom. So if you find your self or loved one at Brian center, make sure to get the room with hardwood laminate and not carpet. They should dispose of the upholstered chairs as I cannot imagine how they could pass any sort of inspection for basic hygiene. -Baths: My mom was never assisted with bathing while she was at Brian Center. The only baths she received are the ones I gave her. The CNA said it was PT/OT's job, PT said it was OT's job, and OT said it was the CNA. When I complained about this, I was promised by the DON that my mother would be offered a bath the next day and she was not. -Clothing laundry: If you have your clothes washed by the center you must stay on them to get your clothes returned. Only after I made a complaint did some of the clothes return. I think we finally got all of her clothes back. We were assured if they were labeled it wouldn't be a problem, but it was. -Communication from outside physicians: Mom's team that cares for her disease spent 90 minutes trying to make one medication adjustment and tell staff that her IV medication was the same dose as prior. It was very difficult for her team to contact and interact with the brian center. -I did not have major expectations and was very aware the level of care would be much less intense than the hospital, however-- we did expect basic human needs to be met which were not. -Director of Nursing: When I received a call from the director of nursing regarding the complaints she came from a place of defensiveness and that just didn't settle well with me. That was ultimately the deciding factor in transferring my mother's care out. I did not believe that there would be any long sustainable change in the care for my mom. -The room ambassador and person in charge of sales were very helpful in navigating all of those issues and they are great assets. The nurses were very kind and helpful but clearly over extended and therefore not available for more than simple med passes. We never experienced help from the CNA's who I also imagine are completely over extended. The food was good.

Brian Center Southpoint

Sarah, we are disappointed that we did not provide you or your mother with a good experience. Thank you for taking the time to let us know. We would like the opportunity to address your concerns. Experiencia negativa: Would not recommend. My grandmother has very sensitive skin. They were rough moving her up and down which caused scratches and a lot of bleeding. One night my grandmother became very weak and disoriented. Took 15-30 minutes to actually get someone to come into the room to check her out. They told us the doctor couldn’t come until Monday (this was on a Saturday). I felt my grandmothers forehead and it was burning hot. I asked the nurse to check her temp and she said it was normal. The doctor called the facility to call my family and said “it would cause too much stress on her to move her to the hospital” 30 minutes later our family made the group decision to send my grandmother to the hospital to get checked out. The EMS came in and said her temp was 104.7. If we did not send her to the hospital and had listened to the doctor at the Brian center, then my grandmother would have died within hours.

Experiencia negativa: I removed my mother within 24hrs. I do NOT recommend this place. Our concerns for the events that had taken place that night with her have been belittled. After pressing the call light for toileting needs the male assistant entered her room noticing she had on an adult brief. He told her to use the bathroom on herself. Then proceeded to get face to face with her and told her she better not call back for at least another two hours and that she better not tell anyone about this. I have much more to elaborate on that transpired there within 24 hours. Not knowing the area we took the advise from UNC Chapel Hill to move our mother here for stroke rehabilitation. I am a nurse of 20 years and I would never ever place my trust again with The Brian Center Southpoint.

Brian Center Southpoint

Porcha, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please reach out to us at 866-885-5992 when you can so we can address this situation directly. Thank you.
